Overall, Sand Land is a great game that may have a not so grandiose story, but has plenty of memorable characters to make up for that.
It can be played at your own pace: Focus on the story missions, or spread out as much as you want for the side missions and hunts, clearing the map of undiscovered treasures, and reaching your max level (capped to your current story progress).
The game does have a hint of what some call the west-localising ‘kiss of death’, but it is very minute from what I’ve seen in my playthrough:
– One male character is referred to as genderless in the English version, but the rest of his race have their genders pronounced.
– There is a line late in the game that is somewhat rare to trigger that slaps at religion, but the Japanese version of the line doesn’t do that, despite what the subtitles suggest.
If that kind of localising bothers you, you can rest assured it has been given a tight leash here – and if you can speak Japanese, even better. This is a game I can see myself replaying from start to finish again at some point in the future.
