I bought these in 2012 and these have been the best purchase I have ever made in terms of workout equipment. I won’t lie and say I’ve been consistent with my training over the years but these have definitely seen their share of blood, sweat and tears and they still function perfectly! Granted they’re little just shaped bits of metal and there isn’t much there to go wrong but these have definitely stood the test of time. For me anyway. Only thing is they cost 20 back then and now it’s triple that but that’s inflation for ya! Definitely worth it!
These are good quality dumbbells. They appear well made. The grip is not too rough on the hands. The box doesn’t appear useful after you have assembled them. Note that the collars tend to loosen unless the rubber part on the collars are facing INWARDS towards the weights.
2*10kg per each arm = 20 kg total dumbbell set comes with
Chrome metal spinlocks most durable out of all things here
Metal cast iron plates from 0.5kg, 1.25kg and 2.5 kg as with every cast iron are prone to corrosion with exposure to water from sweat and high humid environment thus try wiping both the cast iron plates and the dumbbell bar after each workout session
Chrome knurling for extra grip during sweaty session just don’t forget to clean the grip soon from the workout session as the grime from dead skin builds up faster in grippy dumbbell bar than others
Supplied plastic case for ease of storage for dumbbells set and beginner leaflet training partner for reference to start for a beginner try a personalized training programme with this se
Bought way back in 2010. Can’t complain, they’ve really helped increase my strength to the point I should have bough some heavier discs by now (I’ve stacked the heaviest discs on to one bar for 12.5kg). Compared to the picture currently in place as of the posting of this review, the metal spinlock on mine looks thicker and more robust with the rubberised part more internal than sticking out the side (I’ll try and add a picture in the future, but no promises!)
I should restate that you do need to buy gloves to lift these, as the weight & pattern on the metal will do no good to your hands otherwise. I might have made the mistake if I hadn’t read any reviews back when I bought them, so I think it’s important to repeat it.
My one minor niggle is that I’ve seen bars with 4 discs either side on them and the spinlock securely fastened. I can fit 4 discs either side of this but the spinlock doesn’t fasten securely. It slackens a bit during normal use anyway and if it slackened even a little bit with 4 discs either side, they would fall off. I can’t mark it down for this as it’s just me wanting everything (& wanting 15kg of weight without buying new bigger discs to take up space around the house).
Really happy with the product.
I received these dumbbells within 2 days of purchasing them, they where packaged very well and there was no marks or damage to the product.
The price for these dumbbells are amazing considering what you get and the build quality is top notch!
However some people said the bar grip is far too rough and it is! This is easily solved by sanding the bar with metal sandpaper, it does not make the bar smooth it just gets rid of the rough edge. After doing so the dumbbells are far more comfortable for use and still has bags of grip. Things I like about the product:
– The carry case, very convenient perfect to store under your bed or in small places etc
– The quality of the entire product, it feels sturdy and long lasting, only fault was the bar roughness but that can be solved!
– The weights do not slip off the bar, once the spinlock is tightened those weights are not going to move
– The chart that is provided is very useful when it comes to designing a workout routine, also details on how you should train and safety precautions are detailed on the chart.
– The weights are smaller in size when compared to the sandfilled weights that I previously used, I am now able to do leg exercises, without the dumbells banging against my leg on each rep.
These are my first set of proper adjustable Iron dumbbells, I’ve only had them for a few days but I get the feeling that these are going to serve me well and that I will have no problems with them. If your looking to start weight training as soon as you get the dumbbells may I suggest you do a variety of press ups and exercises prior to weight training, just so you can prepare your body for the exercising as it will not be used to it. If you don’t it will just mean your arms and entire body will ache like hell the next day.
Overall these dumbbells are perfect and have no problems that cannot be resolved, I would highly recommend them to anyone, 5 Star !
I’m very pleased with this purchase. The dumbells look, feel (and sound) solid, they go on and come off easily and quickly and I’ve had no problems with the collars coming loose. The much vaunted smell so many reviewers mention was barely noticeable once I’d started training; I mostly only notice it when putting the weights in the case or getting them out.
For exercises like bicep curls and dumbell shoulder presses, these should last a long, long time, especially for one arm isolation exercises, but for exercises like squats, stiff legged deadlifts and dumbell bench/floor presses, I would recommend buying some additional plates to go alongside; I’m going for 4×2.5kg myself, as I can already do twelve reps of floor presses at 20kg. 🙂
The grips on the dumbells are fairly rough – this didn’t bother me too much until I trained on a really cold day: having rough grips that are freezing cold literally hurts, so I’d definitely recommend some gloves. I picked up a pair of these:
LEATHER WEIGHT LIFTING GLOVES WRIST SUPPORT
I am not massively impressed by the case: I wouldn’t feel secure wheeling it around – it’s plastic and I wouldn’t want the weights to come flying out of the case while on the move.
And remember: forget ‘no pain, no gain’. Replace that with ‘if it hurts, it could be harmful’. Sure, some slight soreness after workouts is to be expected at first, but as you get used to it that should go away, at least until you increase the weight again! I’m following a programme at bodybuilding.com called AllPro: A Simple Beginner’s Routine part III (it’s in the stickies) and I highly recommend it. A quick tip: to build muscle, don’t neglect your legs! They’re the biggest muscle group in the body: doing squats will encourage all other groups to grow.
Finally, remember: if you want to build muscle, there has to be something to build with! That means you have to eat – a lot. Get lots of protein by eating lots of meat, but of course you do need other things in your diet. Bodybuilding.com is a great site to learn all about the nutrition side of things (don’t be phased by the name, it’s designed for anyone who wants to put on some muscle or lose weight).
The spinlock bar and nuts feel solid, though the chrome finish can be scratched off, revealing brass-coloured metal. While the collars tighten securely, adding and removing disks can be time-consuming.
The disks weigh as much as they should and are easy to handle. They do have an unpleasant bituminous smell to begin with, but this fades.
The bars have a rough texture, which some report finding uncomfortable — I just found it aided my grip.
The range of disk combinations makes this product very versatile and when you reach a point when you can no-longer progress, you can simply purchase more disks. I bought some 5kg disks and they are still usable for most exercises, even when placed closest to my hands. I think 7.5kg could be pushing it, but one could always put the smaller weights on the inside.
My only complaint is that the carry case seemed to crack easily, though it has remained in a usable condition.
As already written several times, these weights stink. The smell wears off eventually, but your hands will stink after use unless you wear gloves. Personally, it didn’t bother me too much, I stink while working out anyway and shower afterwards, so no biggie. The bars are not that rough, but I do have rough hands myself. Anyone starting out weight lifting might have to wear gloves, but if you don’t mind a bit of cold metal on your palms, you should be fine. As far as the locks are concerned, they are great. Very easy to turn but very sturdy when locked on. Doesn’t take long to change the weights and you feel safe when using them. Also comes with an ok case (the lock mechanism is a bit difficult to get open at first) that’s made of plastic but extremely durable. You also get a handy workout chart which is a nice extra. Overall, don’t delay. If you’re a beginner, these are ideal to bulk up a bit.
I’ve started my New Year fitness drive early so ordered these before Xmas and I’m very impressed. Unlike some other reviewers mine arrived in good condition – the plastic case seems durable and on arrival there was no damage – not even a dent. The packaging it was delivered in was minimal (just a cardboard wrapper) so I think it depends on how well the courier treats the package, but mine arrived in good condition.
You get 12 discs in 2.5/1.25/0.5kg weights, the dumbell bar, spinlock collars, plus a fitness/exercise chart and instructions. It’s pretty quick to change the weights as the screw thread on the bar is large (has a large pitch) – literally you can spin them off and on within a matter of seconds, so I wouldn’t worry too much about this aspect. The dumbell bar and spinlocks together weigh 1.7KG, so using the provided discs you can go from 2.7KG through to 10.2KG on each dumbell.
The discs do smell a little as others have said but not excessively. The bars also have a bare metal patterned grip which I guess could give you sore hands after a lot of use but I haven’t had any particular problems so far (and will use gloves if/when I do).
The set is made of cast iron and steel, so looks like it will be very durable. Recommended.
There’s a lot of uncertainty on other review of what you get, so here’s what I got. 2 metal spinlock bars. 2 metal spinlock collars. 4 x 0.5kg discs, 4 x 1.25kg discs, 4 x 2.5kg discs. A plastic case. Both the bars and the collars have rubber rings on them (to stop the collars becoming loose and stop the discs from turning around when in use). The bars do not have rubber grips. They are knurled bare metal (so you will need gloves. I just use my fingerless mountain bike golves). Also there IS a oil/deisel smell on the dumbells. It would probably make your room smell a little bit, but if you open your window, during/after your workout you should be fine. If I knew they had this smell before buying I would still purchase the dumbells. The smell isn’t that bad. Hope this helps.
p.s. For the money they’re great. People who are saying they’re poor quality are comparing them to dumbells at a gym. They cost 2000 – 4000 for they whole set. These are 34.99. They’re more than adiquate for home workouts.
These weights are good quality and great value. They come with a strange smell for free. On the positive side the spin lock collars include rubber O rings and you can really secure the weights onto the bars. It is also good to be able to mix and match the weights to suite. On the downside, the spin lock bars are rough to hold – you can be sure your hands will not slip, but you’ll end up with hardened hands and calluses, I’d suggest you wear gloves. The weights comes in a handy box – not very strong, but useful providing it does not get damaged during delivery. Brings me to the packaging – there isn’t any. Frustration Free packaging in this case, meant none as such, unless you count the address label and the tie around the York card sleeve, which is part of York packaging of the product, and reveals a good third of the case including the handle area. No additional packaging was added by Amazon, as a result the case was damaged – the two clips that retain the lid when closed broke off. Due to the fact that the weights were for me, and the weight and hassle of returning them, I decided not too. However due to this ‘Frustration Free’ packaging policy that Amazon are using, I have no confidence in ordering the York fitness bench that I wanted for fear of it arriving damaged due to inadequate packaging.
Very glad I bought this set of dumbells, they seem well made. The weight plates supplied allow a variety of loadings, and even with all the supplied weights on, there is room to add more plates if and when you need to. The dumbells and collars are well machined and the spinlock collars are reasonably quick to undo/redo to change plates. As has been mentioned, the rubber o-rings can come loose from the collars but can very easily be glued in if it becomes a problem.
The weight plates themselves are of reasonable quality though somewhat roughly finished (Update: Have had these for a while now and the paint finish on the plates is not proving to be very durable). The paint on them also has an unusual odour to it at first, but this goes after a few days. The case is solid enough, and should last if looked after – it’s a handy addition for storing the weights. The added bonus is the inclusion of a dumbbell workout poster which should be handy for novices, or anyone needing to vary their routines.
Nice, solid weights. They haven’t come loose for me whilst using them yet. Additional disks are available for when you need more weight. Remember you only get only 10kg per dumbbell in this set. I ended up buying some extra 2.5kg disks just after a few weeks and then swapping those for 5kg ones a little later.
I haven’t used the storage case at all but I would still buy this item over the option which just comes in a cardboard box as this one has the metal spinlock collars.
I think if they are looked after, they will outlast me. I would recommend this item over vinyl weights because it’s made from things that will last, also they look so much better, being smaller and more solid.
Note-
The 1st set of these I received had one of the spinlock collars a little loose so it was not be safe to use. I went through self returns with Amazon, printed of the address, re boxed it and took it down to the post office to send back. However the post office had a maximum package weight of 20kg and this item with packaging is over 22kg. So i had to carry it home again and organise a collection with Amazon. So if you need to return this item for whatever reason, don’t do what I did and lug it to the post office, contact Amazon and get them to organise the pick up.
I bought this kit as a home alternative to working out alongside the preening peacocks in the weight section of the gym and have found that it suits my needs perfectly. Well, almost.
The weights themselves are excellent – well made, durable and very sturdy – and the bars and spinlocks are of much better quality than other dumbbell sets in the price range. Perhaps wear and tear will eventually tell but the spinlocks are solid and reliable and once the weights go on and are locked in, they don’t budge. The kit also comes with a very handy wallchart that shows around 20 different exercises, allowing you to plan a workout for each of your different muscle groups. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, the supplied case lets the package down – it’s of dreadful build quality and simply can’t handle the weight of the dumbbells inside. My set arrived with a crack in the handle and the plastic fasteners already fallen off – I opted not to send it back, however, as it was fairly evident from the quality of construction and materials used that a different set wouldn’t be any better. Attempting to pick the whole thing up to move it elsewhere caused the inside of the case to crack and I was dissuaded from using the handle by shards of plastic falling off at an alarming rate. The case now sits on its rear face on the floor, acting only as a means of keeping everything organised – although even this can be a challenge, as the weights tend to shift around making it very difficult to close the lid.
I wouldn’t let the shortcomings of the case put you off buying an otherwise excellent set of weights but I certainly wouldn’t pay anything extra over the York 20kg Cast Iron Dumbell Set for it. Thankfully, I managed to get mine for around the same price, otherwise I’d certainly be sending this kit back for a refund and picking up the cheaper set.
The postman struggled with these from his van to the front door…be warned they are heavy when they are packaged (but then that’s as you’d expect). The product is also as you’d expect…a nice storage and carrying case and the weights themselves are fine. Sturdy and robust, they are very substantial in the way they’ve been manufactured. Very solid spin lock bars, with metal spin locks (better than the plastic ones some people seem to have got with these weights) to secure the weights in place. The rubber ‘seals’ however seem very flimsy to me; I’d be surprised if they lasted more than a month or so without perishing.
The only thing I would comment on is that you need a pair of gloves as the finish on the handles of the dumbbells is quite rough and will grate your skin. There’s also a fairly strong smell of cast iron, which is to be expected I suppose but was something which I was not prepared for.
Also, you’re going to progress fairly quickly with these weights and after a month or so I could see them becoming perhaps a little easy for your dumbbell flys and presses; so you may need to purchase further weights (not a problem, but buying them brand new can be expensive).
Overall, good solid weights that should last you for a very long time.
Delivery was impressively fast on first class! The case itself was a little damaged but most importantly the dumbbells themselves were as expected. My trainer told me and also read up a lot of information about dumbbells being far more affective and far better for you than the gym machines. Which is great for me! Because I really do not like gyms.
I think of gyms as playing on the xbox. I enjoy a lot playing on my xbox but if I had to travel, pay and share in a crowded environment to play it. Would I play on it as much. The answer to that is, definitely not. So I like muscle building cos it makes me feel better about myself but I don’t like gyms. So dumbbells are perfect for me.
If you do the workouts with them properly and go at your own pace. You really feel the benefits. One of the most important advice I can give you – eat high protein foods before and after workout and when you have done your workout with dumbbells give yourself 24/48 hours rest so your muscles will develop and grow stronger in that time. Its a human thing to think that the more you do the more your muscles will develop as you go. Not the case because your muscles develop after the exercise. The same applies for loosing weight, you start loosing weight after the exercise.
And don’t think the more weight the better. If you use a weight your not ready for, you tire your muscles too early, and will not be able to do as many reps. It all comes down to how many reps you do with a weight your are comfortable with.
This is far the best and one of the most important items I have ever bought!
I have been after a set of weights for a while, but i always felt that the price was a little high.
I saw these on Amazon and the price was right. Item arrived as described with free super saver delivery.
The weights are as expected and Im impressed with the quality.
The bars – Good a solid but the “grips” on them are very rough, Im ok with that others may find them too rough without gloves.
The weight discs – Great quality, cannot fault them.
Collars – Not bad, they screw onto the bar so are not quick change. But they only take a few seconds to spin off. One observation is that the casting on the thread could be a little better on the outer edge. But they work well and go on and off without any problems.
Box – I wanted somthing “tidy” so the box was a good selling point. The box is made on good quality plastic and does the job. The issue is that everything has to be exactly lined up for the lid to shut and clip, I have found myself moving bits around to get the lid to shut.
I would have given this product 5 stars but have knocked 1 off due to the box being a little frustrating to get shut.
The spin lock bars are brilliant, make changing weights fast and easy and secure better than the plastic clips I used to have.
The weights are a good mixture, (but I immediately invested in 4 x 5kg as well.)
They may be reconditioned, as they do have a strong paint smell (which goes) and in places where the paint has chipped as I have used them I have seen patches of rust underneath some of the weights. But I can not say this is particularly detrimental and the weights seem solid enough and do the job.
The box could do with some work, clips are a pain to get open, the spinlocks do not fit in their slots securely and you have to shake the 20kg box to get the weights to fall into place to allow the lid to close.
In summary, I paid 32.99 if I had paid 20 like some others I would be very very happy, but I am glad I did not spend 300+ on the new all in one dial weights.
I am a total beginner to this.
The weights arrived well packed with a sturdy case. I wanted one with a box incase this was just another fad, i could easily store them away. (this is not the type of case you can use everyday, you’ll spend more time trying to get the weights to fit in properly then actually using them!)
A set of intstructions, like a wall chart, came with these. This covered all the various excercises you can do and explains alot for beginners such as when to inhale/exhale, sets, reps etc.
The weights seem good enough quality. I’ve used weights (when i was a kid) that had plastic locks, these metal ones are alot more secure!
After seeing several reviews about sore hands, i also ordered a set of gloves. Waste of money. They are still in the box, i only took them out to tease the wife into thinking i was going out to meet her friends wearing them. If you follow the instructions that came with the weights, you will shouldn’t be doing that many reps anyway. Yes, the weights do smell a bit of metal, so what. Are we pushing weights or daisy’s ladies?
Two things i feel made me mark this down a star. 1) Several of the excerises shown require a bench. I haven’t a problem with this, but had i known before i may i ordered it together.
2) If you follow the exercise sheet for the recommended number of reps, even for a beginner like me, for SOME of the excersies, the weights are just not heavy enough. I would advise if possible to ALSO order some weights a bit heavier than 2.5kg which is the maximum in this set. I saw you can order 4 x 5kg’s on amazon, this maybe ideal.
Arrived quickly – in 2 days after placing an order. First thing, when I open the case, it was a specific smell coming out. It happens when the iron is blackened in an oil. It protects against corrosion. So, the weight plates you see, are blackened, not painted. I left em just for half an hour outside to get some fresh air and ventilated. After this, the dumbbells are ready to be inside and no smell coming 🙂 Well, maybe just a little if you get em closer to your nose 🙂
Everything looks like made cheap concerning they are made in China. But this kit worth that price you pay and I do not regret at all I bought this kit. I’ve got what I was looking for. Very handy kit. Wider but small diameter plates make dumbbell look more attractive and easier to use in some special exercises. It is advantage. Bars are rough, but you get a better grip and dumbbells won’t slip out of your hands. If you never hold a spade before in your hands and want do some exercises using this kit, buy a pair of gloves before you do that as it will protect your sateen skin hands 🙂
Would recommend to everyone who is looking for a cheap decent dumbbells.
I got these about a year ago when I had to end my gym membership for financial reasons. Due to intermittent exercise and lack of time, I’m still a novice, and these weights have served me very well up until very recently.
They have enough weights on them that most beginners should be able to get a good start (10×2 or up to about 15×1) and once they’re NOT enough, it’s easy enough to get more weights for them, since York is a consistent brand and this set uses their standard 1-inch bars. I’m considering getting a few more weights now, but I’m in no rush.
The only downsides are that sometimes, the metal on the edges can be quite sharp, and flakes sometimes come off the thinner bits. This seems to have more to do with them not being polished after moulding and cutting than with quality, as the bars are quite as sturdy as you would think solid metal bars should be. The other downside is that the rubber sleeves don’t sit quite still, so a bit of time is spend moving them back into place. Is that really so terrible, though?
I’m extremely happy with these dumbbells. They are extraordinarily good value for money when you factor in how much it would cost to deliver a 20kg package from other places who don’t include free shipping. Everything within the kit comes neatly wrapped in it’s own plastic packing, then placed in a purpose built black plastic carrying case.
A few of the reviews I read made comment too the roughness of the grip on the bars, I however completely disagree with that. The bars are knurled to give you extra grip but there weren’t any sharp edges on the knurling and it didn’t feel rough on my skin at all, perhaps my hands my be tough? Or perhaps other reviewes are using to much weight so they are slpping in their hands? Or it may be because I have a strong grip? Who knows why, but they haven’t caused me any irritation.
This was my first venture into buying weights and these have fulfilled and surpassed my expectations! I started initially using just the largest of the 3 discs, 2 per dumbbell and have progressed now to using the largest and the middle sized discs, 9kg per dumbbell.
Well worth the money, if you are thinking of getting some weights I would seriously consider these.
I agree with the last reviewer that these 2*10KG dumbells are good value for 25 pounds. Also, on the fact that the spinlock bars included have a very rough surface that irritate your hands, since i had no ambitions of deveoping huge calluses or blisters on my palms i covered the roungh surface with a few layers of cellophane (cling film), which seems to alleviate most of the irritation.
The excersize wall chart provides a good number of workouts for several body areas, however you do need a bench for some.
As for late deliveries i got mine within 2 days – ordered on a saturday, arrived monday 9 am, however i did start a one month free trail on amazon prime with this order, and it may be a good idea to do the same before buying this item to avoid a 6 pound delivery charge (read terms and know where to change settings before commiting!).
Good Points – Cheap, Does the Job Well.
Bad Points – Rough bars, Smells of paint a bit to start off with.
