I’m a furniture maker and have tried this for a few weeks and find in definitely accurate, if you have timber over 20mm thick.so if your looking for an affordable device look at this.
I was looking to buy caravan but I certainly wouldnt use the “pin” moisture reader as minute as oin heads are the do make a hole . these are soo much better ,, seem to be accurate ,, as tested them on timber /walls studding ,, rafters around the house that are dry /no damp and use that as reference to measure everything else .would buy again ,, battery life is good ,used a good while and still on original batteries .As good practise ,when not using for while ,pop batteries out .
I only bought this because my awful landlady claims the damp in our house is “just condensation” and is our fault. So she came round for an inspection, I stuck this machine inside the damp walls and skirting boards and proven quickly that she actually had penetrative damp after all. I’m a professional woodworker and timber merchant and needed a speedy replacement after my previous and very expensive moisture meter died. I wasn’t expecting much from this for the money, but it works a charm! Just as accurate as my previous one at a fraction of the cost. Very easy to use, great display, no messing about. Can’t find a single thing wrong with it!
But, it doesn’t work well. Broadly similar results from clearly wetter wood and wood that has been barn dried. I can’t see the purpose of the spare spikes because of you’ve used it to the point of damaging a spike, you’ve probably damaged the whole device. The first one wouldn’t power up at all and was replaced by Amazon.
..very happy! Used for checking for damp on internal house wall and delivered what I hoped for. Using the device localised the problem to a defined area for treatment. Whether the scales are accurate/reflective of moisture content, I can’t tell (as nothing to compare with) BUT certainly highlighted boundaries between areas with relatively high/medium/low/dry moisture. Will remain a permanent resident of my tool box!
Whereas my other one just gave out a loud screeching noise this gives you an actual reading on the bright and easy to understand large screen.
There are several options it will give you readings on softwood / hardwood/building. Handy so you can see how wet your logs are for wood burner plus the building mode tells you how damp your walls are! It also has a built-in torch. Oh, it is completely silent too!
Fantastic value and a must have in my opinion.
