I have an extensive DVD collection, I love the Mad Max films & have all the rest – this is just another addition to that collection. I have not watched it yet as it’s a Christmas Present.
I was prepared for disappointment – i’d read some negative reviews – but what?
“bad effects” – no, they’re stylised – like 300.
“AJ-T’s too skinny” – que? this is david and goliath!
The genius is the WAIT for AJ-T to show up – and the lack of drama when she does. At the 55-minute mark, you just feel the perfect gear falling into place at just the right moment – and boy does the film take off.
I’ve always liked AJ-T, but never imagined her as an action queen; props to Miller for seeing it, and to her for delivering, and then some!
An OK movie, fits in the Mad Max saga. the biggest let-down is Chris Hemsworth, a terrible choice as the male lead, it needed someone with a lot more edge. he plays it like he is on a stag do, out to be as load as he can and it spoils the whole storyline
Furiosa is more than just an action movie. Visually compelling, its plot is far more nuanced than Fury Road, which gives it additional narrative and emotional depth, something aided by outstanding performances. Another exploration into the imagination of George Miller, this is one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time and, in my opinion, his greatest cinematic achievement to date.
George Miller returns to give us the story of how Furiosa became the person we met in Mad Max, Fury Road. This being a prequel to that means you can watch this if you haven’t seen any Mad Max movies.
Not easy to talk about this without potentially mild spoilers. So be aware..
This is a good example of why you shouldn’t go into things with expectations. Because action chase movie a la Fury Road this isn’t quite. It’s a different beast.
It gets all it’s exposition out the way quickly in the opening credits. Then you meet Furiosa. In the place where you would expect.
Action follows right away. This is good action. You always know who is who and what is going on.
It’s a little distracting though that not all of this seems to be location based. Some of it looks studio bound. It’s far more convincing than if it was entirely digital. But I still couldn’t help but notice it. However one character in this part makes a commanding impression. As does Chris Hemsworth as gang leader Dr. Dementus. He is amazing in this role. One of those performances when an actor goes close to the edge but never over it, thus every line and gesture commands your attention. I like the accent he used as well.
Prequels of course exist to tell back story, so this then has a lot to get in. With some possibly familiar and some not so familiar locations. So there is action. There is also a lot of talk. Pretty compelling stuff mostly though.
She grows up, with a few plans in mind.
This clicked for me sporadically in the first half. I was liking it’s ambition. But I wasn’t loving it. But then probably about halfway through, in the middle of an action scene, I suddenly thought ‘wow this is pretty awesome as a set piece, isn’t it?’. And it was. We do also get Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, who is utterly magnificent as well. Thanks to his character being superbly and very appealingly stoic.
Anya Taylor-Joy, and those playing younger Furiosa, don’t have much dialogue. Their performances need to use expression. But you can always tell what’s going on in their mind, so they are very good.
It does get a bit more into action in it’s second half. There is one bit that was a bit too obviously green screen, but this does seem to be more location based. There is very little dialogue in some of these, as it’s trying to let the action speak for itself. Which, once I’d realised that, does rather work.
The film does have an interesting narrative structure, which succeeds at what it tries to do. This does make the passing of time work.
The ending is really good. Some very well written dialogue in it.
And I think the very final scene is quite successful too.
Rather an 8/10 film for me. Like all prequels, not least a certain Star Wars trio, it does exist to tell it’s back story and nothing more. So it doesn’t quite have the drive of Fury Road and thus I wasn’t into it quite as much as I was with that. But it was a good experience in many ways, so I’m glad I saw it.
There are things going on during the end credits. But they are not essential.
The dvd goes into the main menu with no ads or trailers.

After the rather disappointing entry Fury Road back in 2015 I did not have high hopes for Furiosa but how wrong I was. Great acting especially from Chris Hemsworth, a good storyline and great action. This film is back to the weirdness/bizarreness of the original trilogy which is a great thing.
Highly recommended.
Ignore the “it’s not got Max in it” people. The world of “Mad Max” has enough spirit, definition, and interesting characters that this actually ends up being potentially the best film in the entire franchise so far. A mostly mute Max was definitely not needed here. Instead we get a “beautiful angel of fury and death” and a whole character driven plot line which is both beautiful and demented in equal measures, and builds on the Mad Max world in ways we have not yet seen (we do actually even get a scene with Max that will cross over into “wasteland” when it releases.)
Furiosa- A Mad Max saga is an epic and breathtaking film that ranks as the best Mad Max since the second film ‘Road Warrior’. Where Fury Road concentrated on high octane action, Furiosa burrows deep into the sands of characterisation, which makes for a thrilling, emotional, and action-packed film. Without doubt this is Chris Hemsworth’s best film and acting. Furiosa deserved to be a mega hit in the cinema but with audiences flocking instead to the likes of Barbie you have to seriously wonder at the current health of cinema, especially in the US. Without doubt future audiences will come to realise that Furiosa is a classic of post-apocalyptic dystopian film-making. Just a pity that the masses couldn’t come to that conclusion when it was released. George Miller, the director, had it in him to make this epic, and he delivered a modern Mad Max masterpiece. Lawrence of Arabia on high octane.
I just pre ordered the blu ray. Saw this at the cinema recently. I’d read a lot of negativity from the “where’s Max?” crowd and most of it is undeserved to be honest. This is better than I was expecting. Not as full on as Fury Road this has more of a story and gives you a chance to breathe between the action sequences (which are great). The Road Warrior will always be my favourite but this is a worthy addition to the series. Recommended.
A young Furiosa is snatched by warlord Dementus after some of his men discover ‘ The Green Place of Abundance’ where Furiosa and her people have been hiding. From here Furiosa begins a lifelong quest to return home but in the process becomes embroiled in a savage war between Dementus and Immortan Joe, ruler of the Citadel, both hoping to rule the Wastelands for themselves.
Furiosa continues with the themes of Mad Max Fury Road, exploring mankind’s propensity for conflict, vengeance, suffering and self destruction. It is an inventive and bonkers continuation of the story of survival in the Wastelands, superbly led by both Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth who I particularly felt made a pretty charismatic villain. It’s action sequences are just as spectacular as the first film and it looks stunning on the big screen. It did feel a little over long but overall it had good pacing and kept me hooked. It’s been a while since I have seen Fury Road and I perhaps need to watch it again but I remember not being quite as blown away by that one as most and actually found myself enjoying this one more. Also a mention should go out to whoever cast the young Furiosa, a superb bit of casting for the young actress who has Anya Taylor Joy spot on!
If Fury Road was a tasty cheeseburger, Furiosa is a huge steak dinner; lots to saviour but also leaves you feeling bloated. It could have benefitted from trimming 10mins. Also a lot more of the stunts are CGI this time, which just aren’t the same as the majority of practical stunts in previous movies.
I watched this in Imax last Sunday and really enjoyed it. There’s much more plot and straightforward character development than the last film ‘Fury Road’.
As a result the film isn’t an extended chase like the last film but still moves at a decent pace more in line with older Mad Max films like the original and Beyond Thunderdome. The film is overlong at 2 and half hours and doesn’t quite has the same level of polish as Fury Road but is definitely worth a watch if you liked that film.
