This is such a fun build and the fun doesn’t stop there. It’s so much fun to play with too!! Brilliant high Lego quality, good clear instructions and pretty good value too.
This sunken shipwreck set is an add on or expansion Lego set in the Super Mario range, really fun to build, colourful pieces, lots of interest, the usual numbered bags and clear pictorial instructions. Ideally it works best in combination with one of the starter course sets mentioned in the item description.
A lovely little extension set to go with the already extensive range or “Super Mario” Lego already on the market .
This set is a great price at the currently reduced sub 35 price point …. It is ideal as a gift for any LEGO fan .
Remember LEGO can be anything you want it to ….. You can NEVER make a mistake gifting any LEGO to any LEGO Fan no matter what the subject !!
The set went together nicely & there are some really nice little touches around the whole “Diorama / Scene”
Mine has gone into my LEGO City with all of my Underwater sets & looks great ….. See it doesn’t just have to be Mario !
Hope this helps …… An old A.F.O.L
This set is designed as an add-on for the Super Mario Starter Course set, sold separately. While it does have some playability as a standalone set, you really do need the Starter Course and the Mario, Luigi or Princess Peach figure to get the best out of it.
The set has the now familiar Lego presentation – box containing a series of bags with the various parts in, and a step-by-step instruction booklet. As with all Lego sets, the instructions are excellent. You can also get help with this set via a downloadable app.
This isn’t the most involved or complex build, but there’s some nice mechanical sections, and the four included characters (Dorrie, Cheep Cheep, Cheep Chomp, and Blooper) are cute. From opening the box to having a completed set took just over an hour.
The idea with these Mario sets is that you chain them all together to create game “levels” with interactive features for the electronic Mario figures. There are barcoded trigger points on certain blocks that are read by the electronic figures to trigger effects and sounds. It’s a really nice idea, but it does mean that these individual add-on sets are a bit limited on their own. It’s not completely useless without the Starter Course though. Imaginative kids will find plenty of playability as it’s a cool looking shipwreck and the character models are pretty good.
The build quality and presentation are up to Lego’s usual high standard. Due to the Nintendo licensing, the price is a little higher than other Lego sets of a similar size, but I guess that’s to be expected.
If you’re a Super Mario fan and are interested in these course sets, then this is a really nice one to add to your collection. Only marked down due to it’s limited appeal as a standalone set.
First and foremost you do need the Mario base pack to unlock many of the features of this set, it really isn’t standalone and doesn’t come with the Mario figure. This is clear from the description so it’s not a negative and I haven’t taken any stars off for this, but it’s important to be aware of.
I was really taken aback by the mechanisms and visual detail of what isn’t a particularly sophisticated Lego build (as someone who builds a lot of Lego!). The detail they’ve managed to bring in, and the way the mechanisms worked is really stellar, as we can expect from the Lego brand. I was also impressed that all of the blocks with detail on were printed (no stickers!), with the exception of the Mario ‘barcode’ blocks, but even these were pre-stuck robust vinyl stickers. The playability is..ok. These sets really aren’t aimed at adults unless you’re an avid Mario fan/collector, and the ‘game play’ is pretty limited (it isn’t really a game, and it’s not challenging). I’m personally not a massive fan of these sets but if you are, this is one of the better ones of the series, the quality is excellent and I really liked how clever some of the features were. This set also came with paper instructions unlike the earlier Mario sets.
The only reason is misses one star is the unreliability of the clamshell mechanism which sometimes got stuck, and the overall lack of sturdiness of the set. Each of the family bulky pieces is connected by only two studs and had a tendency to drop apart if moved around or picked up.
This is a solid add-on to the Mario Lego range, creating an all-important underwater level.
The build itself is quite quick but fine, and the finished set is reasonably playable as per the Mario series Lego sets. I must admit although I’m a lifelong Lego and Mario/Nintendo fan I don’t properly ‘get’ the connection between the two – there’s no substitute for playing the actual game, and besides the few moving/interactive sections with Mario Lego set there’s very little to do longterm. That said, my two daughters (fully indoctrinated into both worlds) love the series. I can see their Mario Lego becoming more of a display than actual regular played sets (unlike their Lego Friends stuff which gets a lot of imaginative play.)
Lastly, I would say that the Mario starter kit is fairly essential here, it’s not intended to work as a stand-alone set. However, as an addition to a wider Mario collection it’s absolutely fine.
Hi, a good easy to follow lego set, you get the quality of the brand that will outlast others, its a good set for fans of mario but it doesnt come with one but still a good se
One of my little boys favorite LEGO sets is his Mario’s one so when I located the Sunken Shipwreck Adventure Expansion Set i thought it was a great addition.
Building the set was good but did need an adult to support. The instructions walk you through assembling the shipwreck piece by piece, and it was fun watching the wreck take shape. You can even use the digital instructions too.
The interactive features make this set really come alive. Placing Mario on the Power-Up panels triggers fun reactions. I like how you can play it on its own or with the Mario from the starter set.
This was a great Lego set to build the instruction booklet is clear and easy to follow. They show which pieces are needed and pictures to show where to put them. I think those underage seven may need an adult to help build the parts as some are quite fiddly. I do like when the shipping mast turns making the oyster open to reveal hidden treasure. I did notice that there is no Super Mario included with this set but you can purchase this separately. Would highly recommend.
I built this for reviewing but the interactive features won’t work without a starter kit which I will now need to order. Just be warned. It does say this in the listing. It’s a good build though and my first Mario Lego build. It came with full colour instructions and separate numbered bags which made it easier to find the pieces. You can also access digital instructions. You need a character to access the interactive parts as it doesn’t come with any figures. It’s worth the money as it’s quite a big set and looks fun but be prepared to buy additional adds on if you want the full experience.
What a cracking kit. If you love Lego you will ,love this kit. If you love Super Mario you will love this kit. If you love both, you will be in seventh heaven. There are a lot of pieces but this makes it all the more challenging and enjoyable. Some of the pieces are quite intricate meaning the starting age of seven may be a bit young without adult supervision. The finished piece looks fabulous. Although this says it is an expansion kit, it also works as a standalone. Can recommend for all lego and super Mario lovers.
A literal physical dlc that needs a 54 mario starter course figure to use the interactive tiles.
I grew up with a large bed draw full of lego in the 1970’s and used to enjoy making large Eiffel towers to my ceiling among other builds and so i was interested in seeing how this set of 500+ lego pieces compared and as expected the blocks are the same high quality that you would expect from lego.
This expansion kit took a couple of hours to construct and was easy with the very detailed step by step construction guide and each section was individually bagged to make it easy.
There are a few moving parts with cogs and levers to open the clam shell and pop a chest from the bow section and the interactive tiles use a rfid sticker ? that trigger a mario figure that is not included.
I ended up with a few extra pieces and after double and triple checking the build guide, they were indeed extra bits.
This will be given to my young nephew as he loves lego but the excessive price of the mario starter course means this will be just a box of 500 pieces to add to his lego collection.
The pricing of lego now days is very high especially for licenced kits like this so i cannot give this 5 stars but if your child has the mario figure already its probably worth getting as an add on its just a pity its so much for what is basically a bunch of plastic.
Diving into this set added an interesting layer to my usual LEGO activities. Without the figures, it felt like something was missing at first, but the challenge of navigating the shipwreck and unlocking treasures with the interactive elements kept me engaged. The satisfaction of discovering how to defeat the underwater foes using strategy rather than brute force was a highlight. It’s clever how the set encourages exploring and problem-solving, making each play session unique. The need for a Starter Course for full functionality is worth noting, as it limits immediate playability without prior investment. Ideal for those already invested in the LEGO Super Mario universe, looking for ways to expand their play environment.
The attention to detail in this 500 piece build is absolutely amazing.
Who wouldn’t love to play with an interactive shipwreck and find the treasure !?
My grandkids were literally waiting at the doorstep for this arriving and as soon as it did, peace and quiet descended on our house!
The build is aimed at 7 years plus and I’d think that’s about right, but we had a couple younger and a couple older.
That’s the main reason I love LEGO builds, they bring everyone together, old and young, to create.
This expansion set works perfectly with our starter course set, and adds a fantastic interactive adventure to the course.
In my opinion, it is fairly priced and I would recommend it. I will as always endeavour to add a photo once it’s completed.
I hope you find my review helpful.
