A great film plenty of action full of suspense creepy music watching the people’s faces show fear as death approaches them. Of course compared to today’s computer imagining it is pathetic film, but for it’s area a great film a good family film too.
However. I remember one evening back in about 1955-56 with my mum and sister watching a creepy play on an old 12 inch black & white up right TV. It was called the same name as this film, and about aliens who invaded the earth via radio waves I think. The one thing that sticks in my mind was as a door slowly creep ed open a hand like object slide into view. just at that moment a slight wind blew in to our house and made the passage door creek and either opened or shut but it made all of us jump out of our skin loll. The film was soon made just after that play. i was around 10 or 11 years old.
As I said a brilliant film for it’s area mid 50’s good acting to by Peter Cushing, Christoper Lee, Patrick Allen, mediocre performance by Jane Merrow but other than that i once again say a great film to watch.
As a great fan of the beautiful Jane Merrow since my early teenage years I couldn’t be without this excellent print of a classic sci-fi movie. Throw in Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for good measure together with stalwarts Patrick Allen and the lovely Sarah Lawson, well, you simply can’t go wrong in my opinion. I had to have this one and I was not disappointed.
After viewing “Island Of Terror’ a few evenings before I was totally in the mood for some more 60’s/70’s sci-fi movie stuff and especially with the great Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.
In all fairness this isn’t a bad movie, but (in my opinion) it was a poor copy of thei 1966 movie ‘The Island Of Terror’ which had steadier pace and tention, plus the aliens were a lot more animated and threatening than in this one despite looking almost the same. As horror goes this movie wasn’t quite so hot…
I like this low budget British sci-fi, it’s got original monsters , a very top notch cast and the yummy Jane Merrow.” Island of Terror” is a very similar film but I think this one just nudges that one into second place.
Despite the many negative views I have read about NOTBH, I have to say that I think it is a great 1960’s film. The film has the greats of British cinema – Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Patrick Allen, which is a major plus. The story is about an island off the British coast that suddenly experiences a heat wave in the dead of winter. The action is mainly within the local pub and one of the residents believes it is caused by an alien invasion. I actually rate this film as one of my favourites and I am well please with the quality of the Blu-ray. I bought the DVD some years ago but the quality was a bit too washed out and required the brightness to be turned down. They have thankfully restored it to a far better quality and I can enjoy it again and again. Great stuff.
Just a quick few words about this OEG (Odeon Films) release 2014. A good 16.9 transfer (fills my whole screen), good sound and colour. Extras here are a commentary and interview with Lee. I love this film whilst acknowledging it isn’t the greatest Sci Fi ever!! A crazy plot, hopeless “aliens”, and very dramatic acting (except by Cushing who is very relaxed), as well as a very sexy if hysterical at times, Jane Merrow, (she falls over a lot) and reliables Ken Cope and Thomas Heathcote, not forgettings Mrs Patrick Allen, all join in the fun, and present a most enjoayable 90 mins. Just don’t expect too much seriousness.
This blu ray release is fantastic. Superb print and I am sure will never be seen any better than this.
Looking forward to – Curse of the Crimson Alter – and Island of Terror if they are going to be as good transfers as this.
This is all pretty cheesy, and the print’s faded, but if you’re a fan of ’60s British horror and sci-fi, you won’t be disappointed. The cast is populated with stalwarts of the genre, even if the great Peter Cushing’s appearance is more of a cameo than a starring role.
I always found this one to have great atmosphere. The extras on this DVD release are top-quality, too.
