A really great example of this type of battery. Nice charging options and the ability to use it as a battery bank for other electronics as well, great capacity for its size, very visible if dropped in the grass outside or something sim.
When the ‘SMALLRIG NP-F970 10500mAh Replacement Battery for Sony NP-F970 F750 F550, PD 36W’ arrived for me to test I actually felt a bit guilty. The fact is that I don’t have a camera that accepts these batteries. Much to my delight – my lighting ring does work with these so I can feel a little better that this is not just a very expensive and decent quality power bank.
The quality of the packaging and the contents is just excellent. It is evident from just removing this from its nest that this is quite a bit more than a basic power bank. The green and orange is discreet enough not to draw too much attention.
Charging from the initial 67% it arrived with was completed in under 2 hours via my high power USB-C charger. The LED display is extremely clear and once charged can be activated via the button just below the screen.
In use it is absolutely seamless, charging via either of the USB ports gives a very decent charge rate (as expected) in use on my ring light it was also flawless. The fit to the adapter plate is like butter, I would imagine that this is similar for a Sony camera.
At a price of 79.90 this is not cheap, however when you have paid several hundred or thousand pounds for your camera it’s probably worth the extra.
I have been very impressed by this, straight out of the box I could see and feel the build quality and design were both spot on, so I was able to give it a test run straight away. It exceeded all my expectations and performed admirably on my latest shoot. Easy to store and recharge Via USB-C All in all a good piece of equipment that I totally reccomend.
I’ve always had issues with third party NP-F batteries and this has been fixed with these ones from Smallrig. No intermittent connections, accepts a 36w charger so it full in next to no time and has connections to provide a charge to other devices over USB.
It’s also handy to have an on screen charge gauge too.
I’ve genuinely had issues with the hotshoes supplied by Dedolight for NP-F batteries. It’s not Dedo’s fault, just that they are exacting in the fit and third party manufacturers tend not to be so accurate or forgiving. This solved my problem and was worth the price seeing as it’s so hard to get official Sony batteries and that they lack any of the functionality of these ones.
What we have here is a multi-purpose V-mount battery, with a fancy little screen to show you how much capacity is remaining, a USB-C in/out, making the charging prospects much better if you neglect to bring your NP-F charge dock with you, and a USB-A out if you don’t have a double ended USB-C cable.
Frankly, this is a very good V-mount battery that you can also power/charge a significant array of accessories with.
Part of me wishes I’d gone with the orange, but the black looks great regardless.
This is a huge 10,500mAh capacity and supplies PD36W, so if I wasn’t using this battery to fuel my Sony camera, I could easily charge two or three of my drone batteries out in the field.
These are available in a number of different colours which is great if you want to differentiate your kit from other people but also to help you know and monitor battery usage. The capacity of this battery is fantastic and as well as being used on cameras can obviously be used on any small rig style accessories like viewing screens et cetera. The USB-C is a touch that allows it to be both charged and also to charge other items this means you can have coniis a touch that allows it to be both charged and also to charge other items this means you can have complete confidence in having enough MacBook power et cetera. The unit itself is made from a really robust and good feeling plastic and I would certainly say it was comparable to any leading brand.
Can I ever have enough batteries for my LED photography lights? NO! I got this one to add to the collection of batteries needed to power my lights. I’m very impressed with it. It works well and I had no issues with it fitting in the battery holder on various lights. The battery performs well.
The battery quality is good. It is made well and even comes with a terminal cover (I always like covers on my batteries!). It charges up similar to other batteries. I do like that it has a USB output if you want to charge something that way. I also like that it has a digital display to tell you how much power is remaining. The 10500 mAh capacity is impressive. I’ve had no issues with the battery. Five stars.
I don’t have a camera so got this to use as a power bank for phones, it’s 10 000mAhs so will last longer than the average power bank but it’s not that much. It’s pretty cool how it displays the percentage of battery left on a little screen, I have no complaints so far aside from it being bulky for only 10 000mAhs
PROS
-I love the LED indicating level of charge, so useful
-measured it taking a charge at 35.5W (from a PD100W charger, with 240W capable cables)
-measured it supplying 35W to my highest draw device (a video light that will take 100W of charging power)
-textured sides mean a better grip
-USB-C in/out, plus USB-A out
CONS
-steps down to a total 54W of discharge power when outputting via USB-C and USB-A simultaneously (not a major con, this is not a huge step down from the USB-C 36W + USB-A 27W that they can do individually).
NOTES
-I use these batteries in several different ways (they have become such a standard), I’m very happy to have this one (especially as the USB outputs will be so handy to have available)
MY STAR RATINGS:
1* substandard, mostly cons
2** barely acceptable, cons outweigh the pros
3*** meets the basic requirements, cons balance the pros
4**** good product, pros outweigh the cons
5***** exceptional, all (or almost all) pros
Powerful, versatile, a great addition to my lighting kit.
I’ve got this attached to one of my fill-lights, and the added capacity this Smallrig supplies is really welcome.
The light unit came with its’ own pack (a small 2200mAh type), and while that’s just about ‘OK’ for short stints, this Smallrig pack really allows for much longer work jobs.
It’s really well made, pretty hefty as you would expect for a capacity of this size, and the mirror-finish panel containing the power display and the touch-button gives it a simple but attractive look.
It fits the light unit perfectly as you would expect with the NP fitting, and given that there seems to be more and more equipment with this mounting spec appearing all the time, it’ll prove invaluable long-term.
The USB in/out facility also adds to its’ usefulness, and actually helps power another close-proximity fill light.
Excellent stuff, and on a quality/value-for-money basis… 5-Stars.
This heavy duty rechargeable battery pack is outstanding. Available in a range of colours (I chose the orange – which is a great colour when you are looking to find it). When mine arrived it was charged to 71% and a simple touch on the control area shows that (hence the photo). Take the clip on/off base away and it reveals the standard Sony battery connection, in addition this has a USB-C socket on one side and a USB-A socket on the opposite face. So this can be charged up with a simple USB cable and discharged through connecting it to the standard Sony camera socket.
This is a very well made product that will also act as a source of power to charge your phone or other portable device and does so superbly. I cannot say how impressed I am with this and how delighted I am with its capacity and flexibility. Although I am a Sony camera user, I think I will be using this in a much wider capacity due to its great flexibility. A truly excellent product!
Brilliant little piece of kit. The fact that it’s already a pretty high capacity NPF battery on it’s own is pretty good in itself, but add to that the versatility of having a USB-C in/out and USB-A out and it really starts feeling pretty awesome. The USB-C in is especially beneficial, as it means this can be charged of just about any standard charger that anyone is going to have just about anywhere. It’s well built, feels and looks nice, weighs about 370g and measures about 3 inches square by 1.5 inches deep, so basically very portable. I charged it from 60% to full in about an hour, so you can say something like 3 hours from 0% to 100% depending on how it intelligently charges. Either way, you can charge it pretty quick. There’s a nice, clear battery indicator on top that gives you the exact life in single percent increments, both when charging and in use. For the people that want versatility and portability, this is an absolute win. I hate having to stuff gear into my photography kit bag, so anything that reduces clutter and makes life easier is a big plus for me. It’s pretty good all round really, and I’m very happy with it.
As a battery, this takes and holds a charge similar to an OEM in my estimation. I haven’t performed specific tests, but it feels very similar in this regard.
The big difference for me is that you can charge directly with a cable (no need for a base station) and the display gives you charging info that helps you decide when to swap out the battery. Super important info.
