When I first took this out of the box I have to say that I was disappointed as the blade looked so small I wasn’t sure that it would be much good at cutting anything more than small twigs. I’ve had a few products from this brand and so should have known better than to judge it so quickly as when I went to use this I was amazed at how sharp the blades were and how thick a branch it can cut. It’s a bit fiddly to use but once I got the hang of it I found it so much quicker and easier than trying to use a ladder to trim the tops of bushes or trees. My garden is looking tidier than it did and I’m happy.

Spear & Jackson 8201LR Razor-sharp Telescopic Easy Reach Bypass Pruner
Another quality product from Spear & Jackson
Tested on new green brambles, cut excellent no problems.
Used on the 3 length settings. Although the overall length is 2 metres,
From my hand the actual length is 1.9 meters, when you adjust the length
The spring-loaded pin holds the inner shaft firmly.
The middle handle used for 2 handed operation of the pruner is adjustable
    with a very easy adjustment.
The cutting handle swivels on the shaft allowing you to turn for the best
Position this is very good for a 2 handed use but when using 1 handed
I found the handle to the cutting blade could swivel approximately 270
degrees. I would like to be able to fix the handle. If you used the pruner
extended to 1.9metres & using one hand you would find it very difficult
because the cutting head could swivel to a spot out of position.
To sum up 2 handed operation excellent. 1 handed position not very good.

To be fair with Spear & Jackson their description does not mention one
    handed operatio

Strong, sharp, lightweight pruners from Spear & Jackson, I always try and get this make when buying garden tools as they are high quality and last a long time.

Next door’s ivy grows right over the high fence and into my garden.
Although it looks lovely, it climbs all over my fruit bushes and has already killed a couple of them.
I usually get a step ladder and climb up to get rid of it but I’m getting a bit past doing that so I’m afraid it’s got a bit out of hand again.

I tried this telescopic pruner on the ivy. It easily reached the top without extending although it would go much higher. It easily cut the thickest ivy stalks and even kept hold of the prunings so I could put them straight in the bin.

It has an adjustable fold down handle which can be held for stability, essential if you are going really high, it reaches between 1.3 metres and 2 metres.

Easy to clean but you may want to have a little brush handy to clean the part that grips onto the pruning as it tends to collect debris.

    10 year guarantee.

    Good value for money

    Highly recommended.

Great for pruning my fruit trees at the highest point.
Solid well made product with a 10 year guarantee
Easy to use especially with me having arthritis in my hands.
I’ve got a few tools from this company and they are still going strong to this day so I can definitely say durable.
Currently down to 47.41 I feel this is a more acceptable price than the original 59.99 price tag and at this price I would recommend.

Straight off, the little cover that covers the blade, broke. I was only trying to pull the popper apart and it ripped through the plastic. Onto the actual pruner. It cuts through branches surprisingly well, including thin and slightly thicker ones. I don’t have the strongest of hands though and often had to use two on the handle to get it cut, which made it harder to balance. Otherwise, I’m pleased with how sharp the blades are. Obviously, when fully extended, there’s less control and I accidentally dropped the end on a concrete slab. Luckily, there was absolutely no damage, which just goes to show how robust it is.

It does take a while to get the aim right for careful pruning. I didn’t use the handle as much as I thought I would, but it is useful to be able to adjust it. The blades fully close and do exactly what I would hope they would. I had a sloe bush and a cherry laurel to cut back. Both were done well thanks to this. Extending the pole is easy enough too, although it does need an occasional twist to get it to slot in. Finally, when fully lengthened, the extended poles don’t bend.

Spear and Jackson quality expected and received these are great .
As a small stature left hander that struggles with a heavy and right-handed designed garden tools , these are now one of my favourites.

Surprisingly lightweight but strong the pole can be extended to a choice of length and lifted and manipulated easily to prune hard to reach fronds.
The small blade is nice and sharp and cuts through up to 7.5mm cleanly. Small branches and shrubs are pruned with ease and can be gripped too so clippings aren’t dropping down on your head.

Rust resistant blade , a fold down shaft for easy storage and so easy to use ,these are fab

When this arrived I was struck by how small the cutting “jaws” were, but after using it I have found that it cuts much better than I expected.

This tool is surprisingly light, being made mostly of aluminium, and extends a good long way to reach tall or otherwise unreachable plants. The whole cutting head also rotates, allowing you to prune even harder to reach stems and to ensure each cut is at the angle you require.

The listing says it can prune up to 7.5mm green stems, and it certainly managed to cut new shoots on my plum tree of at least this diameter, despite the relatively small size of the cutting jaws.

The “grabber” feature is also great for cutting flowers from tall bushes, or for avoiding overhead heavy stems or thorn-covered ones from falling on your head when you cut them: you can squeeze the trigger to cut, and if you hold the trigger down (and have oriented the cutter the right way around!) then it holds on to the stem you’ve just cut off, and you can safely lower it to the ground or drop it somewhere safe. If you have the jaws half a turn the wrong way, though, then it ends up holding on to the bush itself while the pruned stem comes tumbling down!

There is one issue with the mechanism that I haven’t yet fully understood, and unfortunately these pruners come with no instructions at all. When I first tried using these I squeezed the trigger and the jaws had no force behind them — they moved only ever so slightly but didn’t cut. I squeezed the jaws together (I think, from memory) by hand, just to see what was wrong, and then they started working. So it could be the blades have some facility to disengage from the trigger (maybe for cleaning or repair?) and I had inadvertently disengaged them. I need to try them more to see if this recurs. The trigger itself also has a lock position, which doesn’t close the jaws completely, and what looks like a second lock position, but I can’t get the lever into that slot.

My only real negatives about this are the plastic parts. The trigger and handle are plastic, as is the fold-out side handle (the blue one) and the grabber by the blades. The rest is metal (aluminium, I assume, with steel blades), but I do wonder if the plastic parts will age and become brittle, or are more likely to break if the tool is dropped. With so little plastic on it, I just wish the whole thing had been made of metal by changing those last few parts. (Also, I’m trying to reduce my plastic usage, so this is another reason to ditch all the plastic and go back to longer-lasting and more sustainable materials.) It also took ages to arrive, but I suspect they were just out of stock at the time, because delivery times right now seem back to normal.

Overall, a useful lightweight tool to help you trim and prune hard-to-reach tall or awkward plants.

I recently ordered this pruner to tackle the overhanging branches from the wooded area behind my garden, and it has proven to be a time saving tool.

Living adjacent to a wooded space, I needed a solution to manage the branches that extended over my garden. The telescopic design of this pruner eliminated the need for a ladder, making it a lot quicker and hassle-free way to trim the high-reaching branches.

On initial use, there was a brief learning curve to understand the operation. However, once I grasped the mechanism, the pruner became easy to handle, and I was able to cut the branches with ease.

The most crucial aspect for any pruning tool is its cutting ability, and this pruner delivered. The sharp blade effortlessly sliced through even thick branches, making it an easy and quick ordeal.

Overall it’s quite expensive, but it saves a lot of time and effort, especially if you use it regularly.

I got this for pruning a tree, replacing a previous one that I found difficult to use. I wish I had invested the money in this product from the start. The cutting blade is sharp and easy to operate. The pole itself is lightweight, it’s not at all difficult to use, even for extended times and the handle to steady your grip is a nice addition too.

The angle adjustment is simple and intuitive, I honestly cannot fault this product in the slightest. It’s not the cheapest pruner around, but it’s miles better than the one I had previously, it really is like night and day. Well worth the extra cost.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOut of the box I struggled to get this telescopic pruner to work until I found out that the handle extender button needs to be locked into a hole on the shaft. After that the cutting mechanism worked correctly.

They are lightweight and are easy to use even when extended to full length. Approx 6feet.

I do not think that these loppers from Spear and Jackson will tackle branches/twigs/shoots as big as ordinary handheld secateurs. Depending on the material I would say the thickness for these pruners would be about the same or just a little bigger than a pencil. On the softer green stems, a fair bit more.

For the odd trim these loppers will work well and one place they will do well is apples trees and the like. Much easier than getting the ladders out.

The first thing I noticed about this pruner was how lightweight it was. Then I thought it was not going to be strong enough for some serious gardening. Wrong. Although it is very lightweight, it is also really sturdy. Once you extend the pole out to make it longer, it secures strongly in place – it’s not going to slide shut.

The pruner is perfect for my climbing rose which gets a little out of hand in summer and requires me to stand on ladders leaning over the neighbours fence to trim it back. With this pruner I can easily keep the rose in check before it gets messy.

A very lightweight, but sturdy, pruner all backed with the Spear & Jackson name.

The telescopic feature of this pruner is fantastic. It allows me to reach branches and stems that were previously out of my reach without the need for a ladder. This has made pruning tall shrubs and trees a breeze, saving me both time and effort.

True to its name, the Razorsharp blade of this pruner lives up to its reputation. It effortlessly cuts through branches with precision, leaving clean cuts.

The ergonomic design of the handle provides a comfortable grip, even during extended use. Despite its lightweight feel, this pruner feels sturdy and well-made. I appreciate the quality materials used in its construction, as it gives me confidence that it will withstand frequent use over time.

This telescopic pruner is adjustable between 1.3 and 2 meters, allowing you to reach up to bushes and vines to trim where needed.

It feels well made and sturdy, so I would expect it to last a good number of years even with a lot of use and there’s a 10 year guarantee included for peace of mind.

It can be a bit tricky to use, especially at the limit of its extension, as it can be hard to position to blade exactly where you want.

Having said that, it has done a good job so far, with the blade being sharp enough to cut through pretty much everything I’ve used it on.

All in all, it’s a handy pruner for hard to reach spots.

4.0 out of 5 stars A handy pruner.

This is a great pruning tool. It’s really lightweight, weighing in at 700 gms on my scales, which makes it great for getting into those awkward spots without having to take the strain on your arms. You can use it unextended at 1.3m in length or extend it to 2m. Being so light you could easily use it off a ladder. It has a locking catch on the handle and can cut up to about 8mm – 10mm thick branches. It works much better on new growth than old and cuts through quite easily with a squeeze of the handle. There is a middle hand grip that can be adjusted up and down the pole that locks easily into place and a small plastic protective cover for the blade. On top of all that it comes with a 10 year guarantee and being such a well known brand I am sure spare blades would be readily available.

When I first received this bypass pruner I initially thought I had been sent a defective product. It only just about managed to cut a blade of grass and the pruner’s blades would not close properly. Something was jammed somewhere, or perhaps it had received a bash in transit. However, after giving it a good squirt of WD40 and a lot of manipulation, I finally got the pruner up and running.

Once I was able to use it properly, its easily adjustable handle, length, and lightweight build proved to be a godsend for anybody like me with arthritis and limited mobility, enabling me to reach distant stems with ease. Lighter-weight implements become an absolute necessity at certain stages of life, and this is one such implement.

As the makers correctly claim, it cuts through live green stems up to 7.5mm in diameter with ease. But if you need to do any tree pruning or shortening of thicker stems, this is not the tool for you. For that, you need a dedicated tree pruner.

But for its intended purpose of light pruning, this pruner is perfect and well worth considering.
