I had struggled to get this movie on blu-ray in the UK & finally managed to get this Spanish release.

Sound quality is good, although picture deterioration is noticeable on some darker, night-time scenes.

Still a good horror movie though

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersPeter Cushing is a favorite actor of mine. This movie shows why.
Peter did not care for this movie but it does not show in his performance in my opinion.
He carries the day again by being above the material and giving us a wonderful performance.
The story is trite and rather ridiculous at times . It comes across as a film that was rushed and not well planned. But Peter and company do their best to entertain you and in this they do just fine.
Informative commentary is also worth having on while viewing.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHa ha, I can see why Peter Cushing thought it was one of the worst films he ever made but to be honest it is so bad it is good, almost a cult classic. If you want a bit of old style horror (which in the day scared the pants off of us), watch this. A good old fashioned horror flick that is well worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA better than average horror thriller of its time. Cast is good.
However the 5 stars is for the remastering. I don’t believe I’ve seen a cleaner job. For an obscure film of its period, the quality is outstanding. I guess someone took good care of the negative!

excellent DVD Peter Cushing fills the screen unlike a lot of actors today although the fishing rod used in this periodic film did look like a 1960;s fibreglass rod:-)

Cushing says this was his worse film although I have read elsewhere that this dubious distinction goes to CORRUPTION.
I think it’s a great little movie and the BR transfer from Odeon is absolutely gorgeous.
OK there is a pointless prologue and a weak ending, but in between is quality stuff (well OK,Cushing’s daughter was an embarassingly bad performance but so was Diane Claire in PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES – which nonetheless is still a real classic).Cushing is superb as usual and Roy Hudd’s comic cameo fantastic.
The real problem is that this movie was made about 10-15 years too late, after the face of Horror Cinema was changed forever by Hammer, AIP and continental imports.
My advice: turn the colour right down to monochrome and watch it on a double bill with CORRIDORS OF BLOOD – treat yourself to an evening with some of Horror’s greatest icons!

I really love this and I’m so please that its finally out on dvd.
I used to watch it in the 1990s for a really good afternoon’s fun.
Because its an old film, the special effects are from that era, but it still manages to scare and keep one’s attention.

This film has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, stupid story, rubbish special effects, but the saving grace is the always wonderful mr cushing, the blu ray transfer is decent enough so well worth a purchase if you’re a fan of the actor.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is the best version of this movie – although, sadly, Peter Cushing’s least favourite movie. I have had murky DVD versions of this, but the bluray is unquestionably the best version available with very good detail, colour etc given its age. The story is a ‘B’ movie tale and clearly made on a small budget, but Cushing, Ventham and Flemyng all give of their best (Basil Rathbone was pencilled in for the Flemying role, but died before shooting started – Cushing and Rathbone would be something to savour in the same move). Strongly recommended for lovers of older horrors.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis is a film made by Tigon Productions, who produced Witchfinder General and Blood On Satans Claw, amongst others, during the 60’s in an attempt to cash in on the success of Hammer films, which were so popular at the time. This does have the feel of a Hammer film and is similar to Hammers The Reptile, but not so well made. There is something dark and mysterious afoot in the English countryside, where several young men have been found dead and drained of blood. Enter Peter Cushing as the meticulous Inspector Quennell, who thankfully has plenty to do in this film, and there is no doubt his presence saves it from being a lot less watchable. This film has been much derided and the two lead stars, Cushing and Robert Flemyng hated it. Admitedley, it was all thrown together very quickly, but personally i really enjoyed it, but then i am a huge fan of 1960’s fantasy horror and this film is typical of that period and i think fans of this period and of hammer films will almost certainly enjoy it. Okay the script and the special effects are lousy and a couple of the actors, Vanessa Howard as Quennels daughter Meg and William Wilde as Britewell, give terrible performances, though to be fair to Vanessa Howard, her performance did suffer from some appalling post-sync dialogue. The plot is very patchy and nothing is ever really explained, but if you just take it as a harmless horror yarn, it works well. The plus points here are Peter Cushing, as superb as ever, the gorgeous Wanda Ventham, some very attractive Victorian settings and locations and thankfully this new remastered blu-ray version looks stunning, with a sharp 1.66:1 picture and vivid colours and this definitely adds to the pleasure. This is also an extended version. Very much a film for fans of this period and genre. Extras include:
    Picture Gallery
    Trailer
    Interview with Wanda Ventham
Audio Commentary with Johnathon Rigby and David Mille

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have many of peter cushing’s films and this one is far from his worst in my opinion. This is was made in 1968 and is well off the beaten track of horror films at the time, films like that are risky and can easily go horribly wrong but to their credit they made it work here(big plus in casting peter cushing).

Set in 19th century england peter cushing cast a police inspector is investigating a series of gruesome murders where all the victims have suffered substantial wounds in the neck area and been drained of all their blood.

This is also a nice collectors addition, the transfer is excellent and the special features consist of an interview with wanda ventham, the original theatrical trailer and a photo gallery. It also comes with an excellent 24 page booklet of viewing notes

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersIn 19th Century England, a number of unexplained deaths are occuring. The victims, all men, have been found drained of blood. Witnesses to these deaths are no help to the local constabulary, having completely lost their minds. Inspector Quennell(Peter Cushing) believes that some unidentified creature is responsible, due to the wounds on the bodies. The trail of clues leads to the house of renowned entomologist Doctor Carl Mallinger(Robert Flemyng), who lives there with his reclusive daughter Clare(Wanda Ventham). As Quennell continues to investigate, he doesn’t realise that his own flesh and blood is in terrible danger, as his daughter Meg(Vannessa Howard) is soon required to feed the insatiable appetite of the beast that craves blood!
In the late 1960’s, whilst Hammer films were becoming increasingly reliant on their Dracula and Frankenstein franchises, and Amicus Films concentrated on their Anthology films, it was left to other smaller companies to provide the British public with more diverse fayre. Probably the most famous of these other companies was Tigon, a company set up by exploitation maestro Tony Tenser. Tigon’s notable output include that marvellous horror about religious hypocrisy in the Middle Ages, ‘The Witchfinder General’, another terrific 60’s British horror about the spread of a malignant evil in the countryside called ‘Blood On Satan’s Claw’ and the interesting primitive slasher ‘The Haunted House Of Horror’. Then there was ‘The Blood Beast Terror’. To think of this film in the same league as the afore-mentioned triumphs would be silly as this is a very minor effort in comparison. It does get a very bad press though, which is rather unfair.
For a start, the film was beset with production difficulties. The role of Dr. Mallinger was originally written for Basil Rathbone, who unfortunately died before shooting started. In addition to this, Cushing’s wife was ill at the time the film was being made, maybe contributing to the actor’s later assertion that he hated making the film. Whatever Cushing’s feelings were towards this film ,he still delivers a terrific performance, one of the main reasons why ‘The Blood Beast Terror’ remains so enjoyable despite itself.
A lot is made of the supposedly ridiculous monster. Okay, a ‘Were-moth’ in a low budget horror will always look better on paper than in reality, but the concept was no more ridiculous than other bug eyed monsters of the time. In addition to Cushing’s excellent performance there are nice turns from Ventham, who has an icy countenance as Clare, Roy Hudd as a food obsessed Mortician and Glynn Edwards as Seargent Allen. Of the main performers, only Flemyng dissappoints, looking rather embarrassed in every scene that he is in.
Maybe part of the problem this film has is that it is a British horror. Perhaps the perception was that ‘The Blood Beast Terror’ was a rare blot on the glorious landscape of the golden age of British horror. I see it more as a rather entertaining b-movie if one disengages the brain before commencing watching it.
The only really silly aspect for me is the inclusion of the character of Granger(Kevin Stoney), Mallinger’s butler, who regularily tortures Mallinger’s pet eagle(?), only to soon perish at the claws of said bird of prey. If Granger and/or the Eagle were included as red herrings then I would rather they had not been included at all, so ridiculous are these scenes.
This DD release has the American transfer of the film, titled ‘The Vampire Beast Craves Blood’. This i supposed to be the best picture quality available for this film. The picture quality is a bit faded but clear and the audio is fine. The best extra is a nice interview with Wanda Ventham and a glossy booklet that explores the history behind the film and its cast and crew.
So there we have ‘The Blood Beast Terror’, a curious title as the film contains little blood or terror. Perhaps a better title would have been ‘Boys For The Were-Moth’. I found it reasonably diverting anyway, and it is well worth a watch for any fan of British horror or low budget creature features. 4 out of 5.
