I bought this mainly for the MYO (make your own) card feature. It’s good for adults too because you can make cards for any audio books. There is a public domain site called Librivox that has tons of free audiobooks you can download. You can also download audiobooks from audible if you purchase Open Audible to convert them to mp3 files.

The one thing I found discouraging was that the player only has a 32gb SD card. It’s suppose to download your cards and take off the ones you downloaded first as the card becomes full. But this feature didn’t always seem to work. There is a work around. I opened mine up and installed a 256gb SD card as a replacement. To do this you will need to format your SD card to FAT32. Windows doesn’t support this so you will need to get a program called Minitool (Google it). Once you format the card you can install it and when you refresh the player in the app, you will need to download your cards again.

I think this player is worth buying even if you have to install a larger SD card because it’s portable and you can listen to audiobooks and music anywhere without an internet connection.

My boys absolutely love the Yoto mini. The sound quality is great, it’s the perfect size to bring in the car, and it has a great battery life. It’s easy for them to use without needing help, and they love listening it for quiet time.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI rarely think anything deserves 5 stars, but the Yoto Player is brilliant.

If you loose a card, don’t worry! It’s saved to your phone (need to download Yoto app upon setup) and you can still play it on the Yoto!
There are parental controls to adjust daily and nightly volume. You can even set it to headphone mode for safe listening while using headphones.
The player has a daily podcast and a radio station that plays kid friendly music. Not just annoying kids music. You’ll hear Raffi, but also the B-52s, Temptations, Beatles, etc
The buttons/nobs are straightforward and user friendly. My 3 year old uses them with ease and without frustration.
Pro Tip: definitely get a protective jacket for the player. Little hands drop and throw.

Very happy with this purchase and the quiet time it affords me while my son uses it.

Super user friendly for my 3yr old

We bought this as a gift for our 7 year old, he loves it! It arrived very quickly, well packaged, easy to set up. We got a few of the cards to get him started – some books, some music and some fun fact ones – he enjoys listening to them at bed time. Feels like a good, safe, sturdy product – so far so good!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersA friend suggested these and I was skeptical. We don’t do a lot of screens or tech for the kids. I can’t rave about these enough. It took a few reads online to get them set up (my issue, we didn’t read instructions to start) and we’re off and running. The “make your own” cards work with a tap to your smartphone, and you can have your kids or family record custom readings.

Our 6-7 year olds are obsessed and learning and enjoying so much—filling their down time with listening to a podcast or new book. They can’t wait to share all they’re hearing!

I rarely write reviews—but a product and company so amazing (we’ve ordered many cards direct from Yoto already), it was one of those rare times it’s all really earned the accolades.

We received a Yoto as a present from a friend. Our son (7) absolutely loves his Yoto and listens to it every night in bed. He studied The Wicked Witch book and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book at school and being able to listen to these Yoto cards greatly helped him to follow the story in school. We love to travel and he always wants to take his Yoto with, so we bought the mini. The mini is so easy (and light) to grab and go. It’s an absolute winner! Less screen time in the car while at the same time not being bored. We can highly recommend the mini!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWe bought this wonderful little device for our 4 year old and she loves she it. She carries it around the house and takes it in the car and train to listen to with her headphones. Really intuitive to use/ setup and is surprisingly incredibly well manufactured with sturdy materials for a generally cool looking product. We found the Yoto mini is a great way to keep our daughter occupied whilst encouraging learning and imaginative play (and a perfect alternative to TV/iPad.) Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get their kids playing independently in a safe and mindful way.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Users– This is my second mini Yoto purchase. It’s the ONLY music player that staff have allowed in my son’s program (an intensive treatment site for mentally unwell young adults) because it’s super safe. The residents can’t have objects containing metal or glass or long wires or anything else that could cause injury … and this player has none of those. It’s just a plastic box and a plastic card.
    – The staff do have to charge it overnight (as the charging cord is long with metal ends, so not suitable for our son’s use) but happily, the Yoto holds a charge all day even when in constant use.
    – There are a couple of downsides. For one, there’s no “shuffle” function (as far as I know), so each card plays the tracks in the same order every time. Not great if you like variety. But great for people like our son who thrive on routine.
    – Another downside, which is probably unavoidable, is that we had to take the first Yoto away overnight, whenever we needed to revise the playlists. The tracks aren’t stored on the cards themselves, they’re stored in the machine. The cards are like passcodes that “unlock” a playlist when the card’s inserted. So we kept having to “borrow” the Yoto & cards overnight, download the new playlist(s), then drive back to return the machine & cards. That’s why I bought the second machine AND a pack of 5 cards. Now we can keep swapping the two machines & cards, so our son never loses access to his calming music, and we don’t have to do the stressful overnight/early morning runs.
    – I hope parents of other disabled people see this review & know there is an option that just might pass the safety restrictions in these sites/programs. Thanks Yoto team, for making audio available to some people who otherwise wouldn’t have it!
