I use dvds a lot when I’m working with archived data so this has been a great addition to my work from home setup. Easy to get started and no issues when using with my HP laptop. Only used to read dvds so far so I can’t comment on any other formats.

I recently got this External CD/DVD Drive for Laptop, and I’m impressed by its performance and portability. What caught my eye was the built-in cable design that eliminates the hassle of lost cables.

As someone who loves to watch movies on DVD and listen to music CDs, I appreciate how easy it is to use this drive. Simply plug it in, and it automatically recognizes your devices within seconds. The USB 3.0 interface provides a fast data transfer speed, making it perfect for watching movies or playing games.

One of the features that stood out to me was its slim and portable design. It’s lightweight and easy to carry around, making it perfect for travel or storing away without taking up much space.

In my testing, I burned a DVD at 8x and a CD at 24x without any issues. I also created discs for various game consoles, and they played back just fine. This drive is compatible with multiple devices, including Windows and Mac laptops, desktops, and even Linux systems.

This little drive is well-made, compact, and easy to use. The cables tuck away neatly under the device, making it convenient to store away. For the price, I think it’s a fantastic value. Highly recommended!

In the box is the drive with a split cable that allows it to be plugged into either a USBC or standard USB. It does not work out of the box on my Win11 laptop for playback of DVDs. I had to install additional software to get a film to play. On my desktop it played straight away. It does play at high quality with no stutters once I had some compatible software. That was easy enough on the Windows app store. Burning discs is fast and accurate. It’s handled everything from video to computer programmes. A neat little unit that is made to slip in a computer bag. The wires tuck in at the base of the unit for ease of carrying. The unit itself feels robust and good quality. It would have been better if it was universally plug-and-play. The difference between my two machines is that I used to have an external DVD player installed on my desktop. This is the first time I’ve used one on my laptop. However, it’s working well now and I’m very happy with it.

I have previously had a bad experience with a similar DVD drive that needed more power than a single USB port could provide, so testing the stability of this drive was my first priority.

To test the drive I sampled several DVD movies, and also read an old DVD-RW disc. I was not able to test DVD burning though, as I dont have any blanks. The tests I did carry out were all successful, and the drive performed well.

The design is compact and the cable, while not long, stores neatly in the body of the drive, which is fantastic for something that will honestly spend most of its life stored until needed in this mostly DVD-free age.

Its great to see that this is theoretically compatible down to Windows XP – something I have not tried, but will have to give a go at some point, to archive some older games.

I remember getting my first DVD writer it was hundreds of pounds and was very particular about which discs I could use. Oh how times have moved on.

I have an all singing, all dancin,g gaming PC but I have a Lian Li case which doesn’t allow for any kind of optical drive and so I ordered this.

I’m delighted with this portable DVD writer. It’s fast at 8x speed and it has read everything I’ve thrown at it and written on my old DVD’s. The integrated USB-C and USB-A cable is brilliant – can just stick this in my bag and pull it out when I need it.

I’m very, very pleased – it works without any drivers and straight out of the box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly delighted - great DVD-RW
