Only downside is the 2 other blu rays discs that aren’t the main 4k disc are region B, so I’ll need to be a region A player down the road as they seem loaded with extras.
Great film if you like re-animator , combs and the sexy crampton, but the version showing on Freevee seems to be a cut version with gore scenes shortened and not as extreme as details provided about the uncut version ? The paramedic gets her head bashed into the floor just once rather than multiple times as per uncut version mentioned online .. ??
Fantastic film from the 80’s Barbara crampton & Jeffrey Combs teams up again in this horror film from the team than made Re-Animator, A parallel universe inhabited by creatures ready to prey on humans
Great film even though dated, stood the test of time well, always liked brian yuzna films ,classic example. Barbara Crampton is gorgeous in it. Nice and gory with black humour. Absolute winner if you like silly but enjoyable horror.
Gooey and gory cult-classic sci-fi horror adaptation of the H.P Lovecraft short story by the creative team behind ‘Re-Animator’. ‘From Beyond’ contains everything that makes 1980’s horror films so much fun.
Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel), a kinky mad-scientist performing secret experiments in a creepy attic, until he gets his head bitten off; Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs), Pretorius’ assistant and the beleaguered hero, who unfortunately develops a taste for human brains; and Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton), the beautiful and demure skeptic, who loses her good-girl in glasses personality, along with her clothes and inhibitions, when she’s transformed into a leather-clad nymphomaniac. Copious amounts of KY-Jelly drip from grotesque shape-shifting monsters, luminous creatures with an insatiable appetite for human flesh appear in the air, and carrying a flashlight is certainly not going to protect you against what’s coming ‘From Beyond’.
The majority of people, myself included, will have originally seen this movie on a rather tired and worn VHS tape, which can be attributed in part to it being an excellent horror film, but also due to the fact that Barbara Crampton is beautiful and frequently flashes her flesh. The remastered and uncut Blu-Ray is a pixel-perfect presentation of this decadent, darkly humorous horror in all its debauched glory.
Great Stuart Gordon (Reanimator) flick from the 1980s. Very messy and insane with incredible physical effects that have aged well (think The Thing). Not as good as Reanimator but close. Some nice extras too. It should be noted that the running time stated on the sleeve is wrong: it’s not the cut 82 minute version but the full preferred directors cut of just over 85 minutes.
Back in the mid to late ’80s, this was kind of a big deal. Following on from their triumphant debut ‘Re- Animator’, creative team Stuart Gordon (director), Brian Yuzna (producer) and screenwriter Dennis Paoli unleashed this rather ‘gooey’ splatter filled monster epic that promised to outdo the craziness of their previous picture… which it almost does. But lets face it – nothing can truly overthrow the good Dr West and his unique brand of lunacy. Even though they do give it a helluva good try…
We first meet obsessive and slightly unhinged scientist Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) who between kinking it up with a bevvy of local ladies, has plunged his crazy brain into the discovery of a parallel universe where pleasure and pain rule. Alongside his meek assistant Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) they both attempt to trip the light fantastic, but when Pretorius is murdered by a creature ‘from beyond’, Crawford is subsequently accused of his dispatch… When the local authorities disbelieve his cracked up tale of interdimensional beasties, they turn to psychiatrist Katherine McMichaels (Barbara Crampton) and detective Bubba Brownlee (Ken Foree) for help. Returning to the scene of the crime, they soon discover the secrets of that parallel universe when it is opened up once again allowing all manner of monsters to cross over and torment our trio, with a returning Pretorius intent on taking control of both that dimension… and ours.
Although not as good as ‘Re-Animator’ there is much to enjoy in this lurid follow up. Director Stuart Gordon has a real keen eye for the macabre laced with dark humor and ‘From Beyond’ is riddled with it. Lead Combs plays everything extremely straight and at times is genuinely deadpan funny (his ‘It ate him… bit off his head… like a gingerbread man!’ is a major comedy highlight), thankfully he’s ably supported by both Crampton and Sorel who eat up the silly screenplay ensuring the absurdity is delivered with real relish. This H.P. Lovecraft adaptation may not be faithful, but it sure delivers the late ’80s gory goods; from a whole heap of ghoulish monsters to the old bout of head ripping – this one’s got it all.
This Blu-Ray release from Second Sight is a delight featuring both a brilliant transfer and vibrant audio, rounded off by a plethora of excellent special features: Stuart Gordon talks the movie, an interview with writer Dennis Paoli and Barbara Crampton, the FX of From Beyond, audio commentary with Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna and Jeffrey Combs and a storyboard to film comparison. All in all, its a slight step back from ‘Re-Animator’ in terms of Gordon’s filmography but taken as a separate entity, it delivers a wonderfully gonzo good time. Highly recommended purchase.
I got “re-animated” during last spring when I ordered the first episode of the “Re-Animator” -series from other source than Amazon.
I instantly became a fan of works by Stuart Gordon + Brian Yuzna.
I got addicted and needed more of this stuff.
I recommend this piece of cult art cinema to anyone who wants to take a trip without even touching any mind-altering substances.
The last time I bought this movie was on VHS & I thought it was amazing back then, but thought the transfer to HD would probably be a bit ropey. I was wrong, the cinematography is amazing & the colours are really vivid. The practical effects for the most part stand the test of time & look better than some of the modern CGI I’ve seen in horrors.
The extras included on the disc are worth the price of the disc if you have been a fan of this film for years. I couldn’t stop laughing when Carolyn Purdy-Gordon was talking about tripping on acid!
A very quirky, cult horror with plenty of gore and interesting ideas. I was a fan of the director’s previous film (Re-Animator) and this has some similarities but overall not as fun. The bonus features are great though, with plenty of interviews and featurettes regarding the censorship the film had been subjected to previously (this blu ray is uncut fortunately).
I have read most of Lovecraft’s stories, being a bit of a fan of his works. I used to have this film on video and I was pleased to find it again on dvd and add it to my collection. I like Stuart Gordon’s films and I enjoy anything Jeffrey Coombes is in. This looks a bit dated now, but I enjoyed watching it, discovering again things in it I had forgotten about.
Perfect movie and uncut version ! I had doubt about the fact that this blu ray had the uncut version but I’ve just received the answer from Second sight : “””” From: [email protected]
Dear Geoffrey,
Our release is the uncut version. The Blu-ray runs at 86 mins, the DVD runs at 82 mins due to the frame rate difference of Pal video. Hope this helps.
Best,
Chris””””””” So enjoy the movie and the many extra’s .
This film is based on a H.P. Lovecraft story but director Stuart Gordon gives it his unique 80s edge as he did with Reanimator. The Blu-ray picture and sound is great and there are a ton of behind the scenes features for those interested. Nice box and cover art too!
FROM BEYOND, finally uncut in the UK and a great horror from Gordon it is too.
Barbara Crampton is sexy as ever especially in that S & M gear!
There is plenty of gore in this 80’s horror and although not as good as the directors previous film RE-ANIMATOR it is still excellent.
Humans are such easy prey!!
While repeated viewings have highlighted a little the limited scope of the production (Re-Animator felt like they had the run of an entire hospital, From Beyond is more like a play with a small cast of characters), in every other way it represents an excelled filmmaking from the wonderful Re-Animator.
The H.P. Lovecraft story is more or less adapted as the prologue to the film, and the rest of the movie is an extrapolated sequel, though once again it’s modern day and laced with black comedy and sexuality. Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton return, along with Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, Leatherface, Kenan and Kel – essentially filling in for Bruce Abbot) and Ted Sorel (the sleazy old man villain, doing as good of a job as David Gale did in Re-Animator). Also returning are writer Dennis Paoli, producer Brian Yuzna and composer Richard Band, along with the same effects crew. It’s a fantastic companion piece.
The Scream Factory blu-ray and this Second Sight blu-ray were released almost concurrently. They share many of the same extras and have basically the same presentation, so I recommend you get this version as A) it has the better new artwork and B) it’s cheaper.
While you’re at it, grab Re-Animator [Blu-ray] [1985] [US Import ] (though disappointing, it’s the only HD version available in English until Second Sight’s special edition later in 2014) and Castle Freak [Blu-Ray] [1995 ] (an excellent disc from 88 Films, this movie based on Lovecraft’s THE OUTSIDER) and make an evening of Stuart Gordon/Jeffrey Combs/Barbara Crampton doing Lovecraft.
I first saw this film back in the 80’s and found it an amusing mix of gore, fetishism and dark humour. Barbara Crampton gives a convincing performance as a steely research scientist, right up to the point where she strips off and don’s her dominatrix-wear. She then launches herself at the hapless Jeffrey Combs, whose over-stimulated pineal gland fairly bursts from his forehead at the sight of her! Whatever would H.P. Lovecraft say? However, for all that, the film is very entertaining. It was good to see it again and it’s a welcome addition to my DVD collection.
This Blu-ray edition by Second Sight is a labor of love.
The film has been restored in all its pink, lavender and turquoise
glorious colors, and its gory, slimy and tentacled horror.
The product contains hours of extras, but none of the extras are
subtitled in English SDH.
I got most of what writer Denis Paoli and actress Barbara Crampton
were saying, but most of the other stuff was beyond my aural capabilities.
One star off from a very frustrated, handicapped reviewer!
Nice and well worth the upgrade over the DVD in terms of PQ and AQ. the disk details are as follows
Audio:
DTS-HD Master Audio 4.0 English, LPCM 2.0 English
Subtitles:

1080/24p AVC 1:85:1

Disk comes with nice help of features Fans will not be disappointed by this release.
This a truly a hidden B-Movie style gem! Another H.P. Lovecraft story starring Jeffrey Combes (who is also in Re-Animator, another Horror delight written by H.P. Lovecraft) which makes with the Horror and Gore pretty much from the get-go!
When an experiment goes horribly right (yes, right) after a new Invention called the Resonator is powered-up, shocking “its” from “the other side” are released and the Inventor, Dr Pretorious meets a rather grizzly end, leaving his somewhat horrified Assistant Dr Crawford (Combes) in a Mental Instution rambling about what attacked him on that fateful night when Dr Pretorious lost his head over the Invention (literally!)
It’s also attacking Crawfords brain like a Tumor, so his newly-assigned Psychiatrist and her Bodyguard/Cop Friend are sent to see this Invention in action at the House of the late Pretorious, despite repeat warnings from Crawford that he is going to destroy the Machine the first opportunity he gets. After seeing the Resonator live the Psychiatrist believes she has witnessed a positive breakthrough for Mental Health, and potentially a cure for schitzophrenia, but the Monsters from beyond and the Resonator have other ideas. Will anyone get out sane?
I really enjoy this Movie because it’s extremely original, I truly haven’t seen anything else like it at this point, so for me it makes it a pretty stand-alone Horror. It’s been really well directed and stays interesting and scary all the way through!
Prepare yourself, you never know what’s waiting to be found…!!
Having seen the gross teen porno Reanimator but being a Lovecraft fan as a reader I thought I would try this one,too-Hmmm…still gross with the addition of an unlikely semi-hero,given Lovecrafts ethnic philosophy as the swarthy victim eaten alive by ethereal bugs, this is still fun for those with a taste for such fun although it was spun from a short tale or smidgen as the director admits.
I doubt Lovecraft wrote any trendy S+M into his tale either but he is dead and directors are alive and have audiences to please who would rather party than read,I would guess,so it’s a bit eighties Drive-In,but fine if that’s your mood-as to the style of the film, garish, gaudy, weirdy and features some wacky futurist machinery and somewhat creaky eighties animatronic effects, what else? But CGI is still not everything and stop-frame,too,has its own weird charm, just as nostalgia and Lovecraft do.
The two main players are outstanding and almost make this rather ludicrous screenplay plausible…let’s say your unbelief is suspendable and the berserk ending is,well,a berserk eighties extravaganza of bloody, explosive mayhem with a somewhat surprising gloomy ending and as for extras, they are very, very good and a very worthy addition to the overall package …Lovecrafty rather than Lovecraft but then he was after all,a New England writer,so if anyone should tweak him,it would be Amerikas JanKees…Fun on several counts and levels and a relative bargain but not Lovecrafty enough for me.
Starring Jeffrey Combs (of Re-Animator fame). A tale of scientists trying to create a machine to see creatures that live in our atmosphere, that are usually invisible to the human eye. And then it all goes amazingly wrong for the two scientists. Blood and guts (or brains) aplenty here. All i can say is watch out for Combs staring into the camera and uttering the words “and it bit off his head like….like a ginger bread man”.
From Beyond is only available at the moment in America so you need a multi region dvd to play it. I first seen this film about 15 years ago on a three films for 2 rental and I loved it. It was made in the mid 80s which in my opinion the best cheap horrors were made. What I mean by cheap horror is excessive blood gore and violence with a token pretty girl. The greatest example of these films is Re-animator. This film is by the same director (yuzna) and has the same lead role the incomparable Jeffrey Combs.
From beyond is about a mad scientist who invents a sort of grand set of tuning forks that allow us to see all of the horrible creatures that suppossedly float around us. The problem is they can now see us. The scientist and his assistant (combs) are attacked by the creatures combs escapes but the scientist has his head bitten off. Combs is accused of the murder and is sectioned a radical young doctor decides that he is telling the truth and accompanies him back to the house were it all happened she is given a trusted body guard the legendary Ken Foree(Dawn of the Dead)who seems intent on spoofing Shaft. The problems start again straight away and we have another haunted house shocker on the cards. Not to give away the ending but it is fantastic no hope and no cure. Buy it if you love horror films.
Only downside is the 2 other blu rays discs that aren’t the main 4k disc are region B, so I’ll need to be a region A player down the road as they seem loaded with extras.
