I have both the standard version and now this pro version and the main difference I notice when shooting with both of them in a studio, is that the pro version makes much less sound when firing. The strobe itself is still very similar to the standard version when it comes to lighting quality. The other two things I noticed were the new battery design and the front fill flash. The new battery now has a USB-C input on the side for charging which means you don’t have to worry about losing the tiny charger. And the front fill flash is something I have yet to use, but I played around with it and I can see how it could be useful. The front flash is controllable so you can have it fill very subtly or very strong.
I really like the new upgrades from the standard version mostly because I like the quieter shooting as well as the USB-C battery. That’s going to make life so much easier.
What I like about this flash:
1) It can be triggered by Godox Xpro II. And They work together reliably.
2) The battery comes with its own USB-C charging port. No need for a proprietary charging device. Nice!
3) It comes with a small flash and you can control its power separately. However, The small fill flash doesn’t work if triggered by the Xpro II.
4) It can trigger 3 other flashes. So it can save you the money for a separate trigger like XPro II if V1 trigger is good enough for you
5) The flash is powerful. I use manual mode most of the time but it does support TTL mode.
6) The built quality is excelle
Godox has put out another great product with professional features.
We were testing it on our Sony A7RIV and A7III cameras and it performed like a champ and with the capability of 500 full flashes, we never exhausted the battery in one session.
TTL mode worked beautifully and having the manual switch on the side makes it so quick and easy to go back and forth between TTL and manual mode.
Color temperature was definitely stable and consistent at different power levels. The hot-shoe mount was right on spec.
We found the external fill flash to be very useful as well when we would use the main flash to bounce. The fill flash would gently fill the facial areas of the subject without too much power.
LOVE the lithium rechargeable battery pack…. Don’t have to carry around AA batteries with this unit!!
The LCD display on the back is very easy to read. We were very pleased with the performance of this speedlight.
Review:
I am very pleased with this flash! I tested it out over multiple weeks in different scenarios and it worked perfectly every single time.
I primarily used this on slave mode as I was in a two flash off-camera setup, and it was great!
Flash power is excellent and it doesn’t seem to eat through batteries.
User interface is easy to use, but it does take a few minutes to find all the options.
For the price, this is an INCREDIBLE flash and I would recommend it to a beginner or a professional!
Pros :
Easy to use
Great modes
Flash power
Cons:
None

Conclusion:
I would recommend this produc
I’ve used a few Godox items in the past, and have used Sony cameras for years, yet i was incredible surprised at the quality and functionality of this flash.
One thing I absolutely love about this item is the battery system, no longer do you have to take the battery out and charge it externally, but it has a USB C charging point which is a game changer as I am terrible at remembering to charge things! It has a secondary fill flash on the front which adds just enough light to fill in the shadows. It is also removable and can be stored in the case when not in use. This can deliver up to 500 flashes with a rapid 1.3s recycle time which is super impressive!
This newer version is obviously pricier than the previous version, however of the increased features and improved speed, for me personally it is worth it.
I’VE BEEN ON GODOX FOR 5 YEARS AND OWN LEDS, TOO.
IF YOU SHOOT COMERICALLY, THIS GODOX IS #1!!!!!!!!!!
I’M PUTTING A 5-10 VIDEO OVERVIEW TOGETHER, SO 90% OF THE HIGHLIGHTS WILL BE IN THE VIDEO THIS WEEKEND.
FYI, YOU CANNOT USE NIKON ON CANON OR VICE VERSA: FUJI, TOO.
THE SOFTWARE IS ONLY DESIGNED FOR THE FLASH IT’S SOLD FOR.
CANON IS “S”
NIKON IS “N”
BE SURE YOU DON’T CLICK THE WRONG BOX
ON ACCIDENT, I BOUGHT A SONY AND EXCHANGED IT FOR A CANON.
I USE THIS ON 2 CAMERAS:
CANON R3
CANON R5
GODOX FLASH UMBRELLA, TOO, WITH A TRIPOD ON WHEELS (I LOVE THIS WITH THE WHEELS)
I OWN 2 X3 UNITS FOR BOTH CAMERAS.
GREAT CASE, TOO, AND PICKUP AN EXTRA BATTERY!
Godox just keeps upping their game. I was very happy to get the opportunity to try this flash out. I already own the original version and like everything about it. Being in a position that I have both, I have the ability to compare them. There are not many differences but enough that you should compare both before making your purchase. The differences are not huge but depending on your needs could be significant.
The first thing you notice when you compare the original version to the new pro version is the addition of a secondary fill flash on the front of the pro. It is removable and has a spot to be stored in the flash case when not in use. This comes in very handy when using the flash on the camera and bouncing the main head. The little fill flash gives just enough light to fill in the shadows without too much light that gives the ‘deer in the headlights’ look that direct flash has a tendency to do. A useful item. The other big difference for me is the battery. Two changes from the original. First thing the did was up the capacity from 2600 to 3000mah which is not too significant but the advantage is that they didn’t have to change the size of the housing so that both batteries work in either flash with no issues. Battery compatability between products that are used together is a major need for me. I hate having to carry multiple specialty batteries that only work in one device. The other change to the battery is a game changer for me. It no longer needs an external charger as they have added a usb-c power input on the battery itself. Camera manufacturers should take note on this. All in all not a huge update but very significant changes for me none the less. What I will say is this, if I have need for a third flash from the V1 family it will be the pro version because of the features I have just discussed. If your budget requires you to get the regular one over the pro, don’t worry since they function identically in real world use. I highly recommend either one, you just need to decide which one suits you best.
Aside from the fact that the Godox V1 Pro S is a versatile, feature rich powerhouse in its own right, it is also a component within an evolved eco-system of Godox lighting technology; it can be expanded upon, used on-camera or off, be a transmitter or receiver, actuated optically or by use of it’s on board 2.4G wireless system, used as a main light or a fill, and is loaded with many more features for the professional photographer.
New with the V1 Pro is the small, removable sub flash fill light, a full metal hot shoe, a port for connecting an external power supply, a physical switch from TTL to Manual modes, and greater thermal protection allowing 100 contiguous flashes, rather than 30 in the prior V1 version. In addition, the V1 Pro battery has a larger capacity, and it will still accept all of the accessories that are compatible with the original V1.
The V1 Pro has three shooting modes, all fully adjustable for exposure; they are Manual, Multi and TTL. Manual is just that; based on the aperture setting of the camera and distance from the subject, the user adjusts light output of the V1, usually by the use of a flash meter. But the V1 makes it much more convenient than that. Once the user sets the desired camera aperture, the V1 sees it and provides a scale on the LCD that shows the correct flash to subject distance. By adjusting the light output of the V1, that can be done in increments as small as 1/10 of a stop, the user can adjust it to the correct distance, or vice-a-versa, using the aperture. However, the V1 Pro provides an even simpler means of determining correct exposure when using Manual mode, and that is, by first starting in TTL mode.
I’m not a big fan of TTL for a few reasons. First, I don’t like the pre-flash it sends out, that can often confuse subject matter or other optically actuated equipment. Secondly, unless the net tonality of the entirety of a scene encompassed within the boundaries of the sensor are somewhere near neutral grey, it can be fooled. And lastly, even when shooting a series of images on the same set, with the same background and camera settings, it may vary the exposure between shots to the extent that post production becomes nightmarishly tedious.
Determining correct manual exposure with the V1 Pro is made simple with its TCM feature; TCM is an acronym for “TTL Converted to Manual.” The method is simple. Set up your shot, set the camera to the desired aperture, then take an exposure with the V1 set to TTL mode. Check the histogram and make exposure adjustments from the V1 using the +/- button on the dial. Once the desired exposure is achieved, push the TCM Button and those settings are transferred to Manual mode, essentially using TTL mode as a flash meter. This is a powerful feature of convenience.
Multi Mode is stroboscopic, it allows the user to program a sequence of flashes to occur within a set period of time between the opening and closing of the shutter, for multiple stopped images within a single frame. Multi Mode is basically a special effect setting.
One of the new features of the V1 Pro is the removable SU-1 sub flash, that is used as a fill light, or a catch light in the eyes of a subject. The SU-1 is a manual flash only, but does not prevent the use of TTL for the main flash when used. While connected, the SU-1 can be turned on and off, and is fully, independently adjustable for exposure. I have not found any evidence that it can be used alone, that is, without the main flash firing. A couple of examples of the use of the sub flash might be as a fill light when the main flash is being bounced. Or, as a catch light, for example outdoors. In this case, the main light can be rotated away from the subject entirely so it has no effect. Then, with only the sub flash to light the subject, the power is turned down to the extent that it’s only a glint in the subject’s eyes. It’s actually a very useful addition, and one worth exploring and experimenting with.
Although not new, a powerful feature of the V1 Pro is its 24G wireless capabilities. This feature allows it to be used both as a transmitter, to control other Godox flash units, or as a receiver, allowing it to used off camera, controlled by another flash unit or one of Godox’s wireless flash triggers. All options and settings of the V1 Pro can be controlled wirelessly and independently of other connected units. The newest version in their line of wireless flash triggers is the Godox X3-S. I rarely use my portable flash on-camera, that’s just my preference, but rather I use a flash bracket that holds the flash and camera separately. I currently own Godox’s XPro II trigger, and I will have that in the camera hotshoe, while the flash is held next to it on the bracket. I also own a couple of other Godox flash units and this setup allows me to control all of the lights wirelessly from wherever I may be. This is another powerful feature and as I mentioned at the beginning of this review, an example of how the V1 Pro integrates seamlessly within an entire, expandable lighting and light control eco-system.
A couple of other useful features are HSS, High Speed Sync, that allows the use of shutter speeds faster than the native camera sync speed, and a built-in, independently controlled, variable brightness modelling light.
In any environment when flash is used, flash output exposure is controlled with the camera’s aperture, while ambient light is controlled with the shutter speed. HSS, allowing shutter speeds up to 1/8000, gives greater control over ambient light, and consequently, more flexibility over aperture/shutter speed combinations. In practice, HSS allows the user to shoot at wider apertures and/or, give ambient light less influence on the overall exposure. For example, we’ve all seen photographs with a flash lit subject outdoors with a darkened background; correct exposure of the subject was determined with the aperture setting, and the background was under-exposed, relative to the main subject, with a shutter speed faster than natively possible without the use of HSS.
The Godox V1 Pro is a very capable and versatile lighting solution compatible with a number of accessory options for light modification and control. Combining it with an accessory such as the Godox S2 Speedlight Bracket, that allows for the use of Bowens mount light modifiers, and one of their wireless light controllers, opens up an almost limitless world of options.

As an experienced photographer, I’m always on the lookout for gear that combines quality performance with affordability. The Godox V1Pro-S Flash for Sony ticks all the right boxes and then some.
First off, let’s talk value. Compared to OEM speedlights, the V1Pro-S offers an impressive bang for your buck without compromising on quality. Its smart design, housed in a sleek form-factor, ensures both functionality and aesthetics are top-notch.
One of the standout features for me is the retained control interface, which makes transitioning from the V1 and similar generation triggers a breeze. This continuity in design streamlines the user experience and minimizes any learning curve.
Moreover, the continued compatibility with X wireless technology is a huge plus, providing reliable connectivity for off-camera flash setups.
I’m also impressed by the innovative battery and sub-flash designs. With the ability to deliver up to 500 full-power flashes and a rapid 1.3s recycle time, this flash unit keeps up with the demands of any shoot, ensuring I never miss a crucial moment.
Overall, the Godox V1Pro-S Flash for Sony is a must-have for photographers looking for a versatile, high-performance lighting solution that doesn’t break the bank.
