I have a number of SSD enclosures, from SATA ones, to 10Gbps ones and 3 other Thunderbolt 3/4/USB4 ones.
This drive is cheaper than the other TB enclosures and its significantly faster, connected to one of the TB ports on my M1 Mac Studio Max, I am comfortably seeing read/write speeds that blow my other TB3 enclosures out of the water. (All have the same NVME sticks in), KIngston Fury.
If you are wondering whether this is a good buy, yes it is.
How long does it take to assemble? No more than 2-3 minutes
I thought my other enclosures were as fast as an external drive could go, But I was wrong.
While setting up my new office, finding a solution for rapid file transfer was essential. This enclosure caters to that need effectively. It’s robust and does a solid job handling large files quickly, streamlining workflow significantly. The ease of tool-free installation was a boon, although a touch more robustness in the construction would be reassuring. It’s been an integral part of my daily setup, particularly for time-sensitive projects.
I did use 13-15 W/mK on the top and bottom despite no chips being on the bottom because it’s all about getting a thermal connection to the case above and below. I was stunned by the results. I’ve seen 2800 so often to suddenly get 3000 was impressive and unlikely any others I could feel the entire casing almost immediately getting warm but equally on all sides telling me the heat was being successfully pulled away from the chips and therefore they weren’t throttling at all. After a while the entire case gets hot. Probably 50C+ but that’s a good thing because it’s doing its job as a Heatsink!
I think I’ll leave it sitting on something conductive to help carry that heat away – or if I use it as a permanent drive as it’s faster than many internal drives depending on the type, I might add an active Heatsink with fan – but again, this is good. All others take a long time to get hot to the touch so they’re not as good as this is!
Don’t use the pads that come in the box – you’ll need 2mm above and below for a proper thermal connection (then never open it again!)
Uses the Asmedia ASM2464PD chip which is known to be a good TB4 chip & the speeds I’ve seen using it have been as expected for a TB4 connection.
Does get hot though!
Updating this review, as our of curiosity I ordered a 2nd one.
USB-C port is fine, so I guess the previous one was assembled out of tolerance.
This one seems to run much cooler at times, just warm rather than too hot to touch, other times, still very hot, almost too hot to touch… But really it’s not an issue..
Just as fast – I’m getting around 30000MB/s read & write on an M2 Macbook Air, which is pretty much as fast as the internal 2TB drive.
Happy to recommend now!
——- Previous review for faulty item ——–
This thing is blazingly fast – a full 500MB/s faster than the identical looking ACASIS enclosure that is 30 more… so I really wanted to keep it.
However, it runs sooooo hot, almost too hot to touch. Not the SSD, but the board in the enclosure itself. Using the same SSD and heatsink pad in the Acasis, it gets warm but not hot.
Furthermore, the USB-C port did not hold cables tight. I tried a few different ones, 1 plug ‘clicked’ in place, one end of the supplied cable. Again, no such problem with the Acasis.
Sad to return it, cz man, it is fast! I was getting 3000MB/s read & write, compared with 2500 with other enclosures.
Honestly, very happy with the Inateck FE2028 Thunderbolt 4 enclosure for NVME SSD drives
small simple box but the inside is well packaged, included with the enclose are x2 3mm thermal pads 2 rubber push-fit drive locks and a very nice plastic/rubber TB4 cable that’s 55cm long
overall installation is super simple
the drive will require both thermal pads ( one under the dive and one placed on top) as there is a slight bend to the Drove PCB when just using the thermal pad on the top of the drive
the rubber push pin is recommended to be slotted onto the drive notch first and then pushed securely into its respective slot into the drive
regarding the images and video I installed a Samsung 990 1TB, Gen4 NVME
with boxed speeds of 7000MB/s R&W
I was getting an average of 3000MB/s Reads & Writes for the 30mins of testing via all TB4 ports on my MBP M3
on Windows USB 3.1 Gen-2, I’m getting 435-450MB/s (max saturation)
also on Windows with a PCIe card into an 8x slot on my motherboard, I was getting 2498MB/s ( which is the Max of that PCIE bus lane )
a fantastic enclosure with the right drive
at the time of purchase, it was included with an Amazon offer of 10 off giving it a total of 69
I shall defiantly be getting another very soon to expand my storage even more maybe with a 4TB NVME drive
Veniamo all’uso.
Just got this drive after struggling to get more than 20Gbps on another brand of enclosure.
The delivery was same day! Packed well and is extremely good quality. I connected the TB4 cable (supplied) after inserting my WD Black 850x with heatsink. This is not the normal way to do things, I know, but I like to leave lid off and use WD heatsink to keep drive cool 🙂
The transfer speed was higher than advertised! Much higher. The advertised speeds are 2700MB/s, yet I got 3.7Gb Read and 3.2Gb write, I tested true world speed by transfering a 5.3Gb folder with a combination of pics and vids and it took 1.5secs for the transfer to complete. I am running Windows11 on an Acer Swift Go Laptop. This enclosure is compatible with Mac too and I would recomend use on either.
The build quality is A+ and the transfer cable has plenty of length, I would guess about 1 foot.
I had tried another brand of drive advertising USB4 @40Gbps, but sadly had to return it after working with their tech support for about a week – it was a shame as I liked the design of the previous enclosure.
I will now go straight to this brand for other products as the maunufacturer has good quality items I now trust.
L’apertura facilissima, a scatto senza viti o altro.
Consigliato
