Decided on ordering this for my teenage son who owns a Meta Quest 2, and since being out of school for the summer he’s up a little later than normal. This has helped him be able to still play in the dark even after his sister goes to sleep. His light in his room is just so bright it shines through right into my daughter’s room. This has been very helpful. Seems to work as intended so far.
Even though the Meta Quest works excellent in a bright room but the tracking takes a big hit in a dark room. This infrared generator comes to the rescue for such situations. It is small and can be places on the side or front. It is powered by 18650 battery and can also be powered using external power via USB-C cable.
It does improve tracking in darker rooms but I noticed no improvement if the room was completely dark so it needs some dim light to functional properly. Overall it is a good improvement but make sure you keep it at least at a distance of 4 feet and do not directly look at the IR due to safety reasons.
Four Levels Adjustment:
The Kkcobvr i3 IR Illuminator offers four levels of brightness adjustment, catering to different room sizes and lighting needs:
Level 1: Covers an area of 20
Level 2: Covers an area of 30
Level 3: Covers an area of 40
Level 4: Covers an area of 50
This flexibility allows you to adjust the brightness according to your requirements, ensuring optimal sensor tracking for your VR headset in various environments.
Easy to Use:
The IR illuminator is designed for convenience. It can be plugged into a power outlet or a mobile power pack. For outdoor use or when on the go, you can also use batteries (not included) to power the device. This versatility ensures that you can use the IR light in different settings without hassle.
Increase Sensitivity:
Using the Kkcobvr i3 IR Illuminator at night helps enhance the sensitivity of your VR headset’s sensors, allowing for smooth and accurate tracking. This feature is particularly useful as it enables you to enjoy VR experiences without disturbing others, making it perfect for late-night gaming sessions.
Portable Design:
Weighing only 145 grams, the i3 IR Illuminator is highly portable and easy to carry. It can be stored in a VR storage bag along with other accessories, making it convenient to bring along whether you’re traveling or simply moving between rooms.
Package Includes:
The package comes with a Type-C to Type-C cable, allowing you to power the IR light using a charger or a power bank. Additionally, suction pads are included to help fix the position of the i3 IR light, ensuring stable placement during use.
Given the choice, I would prefer to use the oculus quest 2 outside in the late afternoon or evening when the sun is setting (please note that direct sunlight exposure to the oculus lenses can damage them with screen burn). But the problem is that the oculus needs some light OR infrared light (IR) in order to track your hands/controllers and this is where the IR illuminator comes into play. Whereas I had intermittent issues with the loss of hand tracking due to poor lighting conditions, the IR illuminator enables me to complete 30-45 minutes of outdoor cardio without interruption. For this reason, I recommend it.
I was hoping that this would help improve the Quest 3 hand tracking in already-bright conditions. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference in that regard. However, it does definitely give you tracking in the dark, which is all that it’s advertised to do anyway. Granted, I haven’t played in complete darkness yet (as my room has many LEDs around), but I did notice improved tracking with the main lights off and this one on. It’s nice that they include a mount as well.
The Quest 3 does not work in total darkness and when the Vision Pro first came out it also didn’t work in the dark – both would report that tracking is lost, with suggestions to turn on the lights. Its kind of a bummer since you’d need to be in a well lit room and can’t say binge on TV in bed when the lights are off. Someone suggested something like an Infrared Illuminator might work and I was thinking about DIYing one for a few months – until I saw this. I had no idea you can buy a finished product for exactly this purpose – hooray!
The illuminator is thankfully not too big and if you try to you can put it on the top strap of the Vision Pro dual loop band (see photo) if you don’t feel like you’re fully geeked out enough with the headset on lol. Unfortunately the magnetic plate for mounting is not super strong and the strap is too thick for it so I guess the best thing is to clip it on your t-shirt or just leave it on the table/chair if you’re not moving around. I found that I can power it through the Quest 3’s USB port or the Vision Pro’s Developer Strap (see photo), but not through the Vision Pro Battery pack.
I turned off all lights in my study, and as expected the Quest 3 loses tracking. Turn this illuminator on and tracking is restored – cool! Turn it off and tracking is lost again, like clockwork. Next I tried the Vision Pro and to my surprise it tracks in complete darkness even without the illuminator on. I guess it was updated to work in the dark, probably turning on some built-in IR illuminator, which is super cool.
In conclusion, this product works as advertised for the Quest 3, and perhaps for Vision Pro head sets with earlier builds of the OS. Vision Pro with the latest OS updates tracks in the dark and doesn’t need this.
I recently acquired this little magnetic light that promises to improve my hand tracking while I’m in virtual reality and I’ve got to say this super portable little light really shines! (See what I did there?)
I didn’t test it in complete darkness, but I did test it in low light conditions–and this made all the difference in the world. Before I got it, any kind of low light situation would show up in my VR experience as glitchiness, or just completely losing connection to that VR environment. Now, with this light properly illuminating my gaming area, I’ve seen a big jump in the quality of my VR experience. It makes a huge difference, as those 6 cameras on my Quest 3 need all of the visual information that they can get in order to translate into head tracking and that sort of thing inside of VR.
And this thing delivers!
This product exceeded my expectations and I recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their VR experience in low-light settings.
Overall Score: 8/10
Equipment tested with: Meta Quest 3
TLDR:
* Helps with hand tracking, but in my experience it works best with the room having some light.
* Makes a difference in dimly lit rooms/weak night lamp lit rooms; but, couldn’t get it to help track my hand consistently in pure darkness (Hence, why I removed 1 star).
* I would recommend it if you share play space/rooms, and you need to keep the lights at minimal power as to not disturb others.
Pros:
* Assists with hand tracking in dimly lit rooms
* Has 2 magnets on its base, to stick to metal surfaces. (No metal surfaces? No problem. It comes with a metal plate, that has an adhesive on the opposite side to be able to mount it virtually anywhere with the provided attachment)
* Comes with a USB – C cord to be able to power it on if you do not have a 18650 battery
Cons:
* Does not come with instructions, so was unable to tell if you needed to put it closer or further away
* Unable to get it to help the Meta Quest 3 track my hands in pure darkness
Neutral/No review:
* Can load the IR light with a 18650 battery (If you vape [and your vape has an atomizer/cotton you need to refill/replace] this unit will more than likely take the same battery as your vape)
* Helps with generalized hand tracking, but was unable to get a consistent test/performance when using it while playing a intricate hand/finger tracking dominant game (Something like “Hand Physics Lab”)
Tips:
* If using closer, do not “aim” the lights directly at your headset/face, for some reason it appeared as if the IR lights were interfering with the Meta Quest 3’s sensors. (By closer I mean less than 4 feet away from me)
* Aim it more towards your chest
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
* Please limit exposure to the IR lights with the naked eye. Prolonged exposure to IR lights may possibly cause eye damage. Doing a quick search on the internet, it mentions less than 10 seconds may be safe with temporary side effects, but I mean better safe than sorry right?
* Also, I only mentioned the above bullet point to bring awareness to people who may not know, please do your own research for more specific information/results in regards to IR lights and its possible effects.
I almost took off one star because I am not interested in buying some specialty battery for this (or any) device. I do like that it uses USB-C though. That makes the battery not necessary, though having the option to recharge it would be nice. However, the price is good, so I decided to leave all 5 stars.
I didn’t expect much from this device… I thought it was just going to be another gimmicky item, but I’m pretty impressed. It really does help with VR tracking in the dark. Great product that I didn’t know I actually needed!
