In today’s world of digital photography and videos very important to have other backups other than your hard disk which can fail, I have several mini SD cards one for work with some documents and a second for home for personal documents and more importantly 20 years of photographs easy to carry around in your pocket and transfer speed not bad
Funny how the review screen offers me ‘Warmth’ and @ ‘sheerness’ as potential attributes for this product!
What Im reviewing here is a microusb card reader. I found the design a little offputting at first with the card pushed into the plug sid. However, it works well and is quite neat.
I found the reader operated at a reasonable speed consistent with USB3 standards. The only problem is that sometimes it can be difficult to remove the card from the reader, especially if you have poor nails.
It really does run hot, it almost burns your fingers. Much hotter than the 34′ indicated by another reviewer. Having said that, the memory card, being inside the USB plug rather than the electronics at the back is somewhat protected from the heat. If anyone is interested it is possible to boot up from a micro SD card using this device. I use it to boot Puppy Linux.
I actually love this little usb dongle, I only ever use it for updating the maps on my cars Satnav but it is a very nice elegant way of using a spare MicroSD card in a USB port. If you have a spare USB stick no real difference but it is a smaller solution in most cases for the same amount of memory capacity.
No instructions of any value and it does not go together how you think it might….bet there are quite a few returns BUT once you realise where the chip goes into to the USB holder IT IS BRILLIANT ! – updated review
I recently purchased a USB hub. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find that my current usb sticks would not fit in side by side because the ports were too close together. I reviewed and pointed out this annoyance, but since doing some investigating and found that this Rocketek micro SD card to USB is the idea companion as 4 of them will fit perfectly side by side in the USB hub. THis is because the width of the USB reader is narrow enough not to restrict its neighbour, unlike the scandisk varieties that I already had. OK the negatives, could be that if you want to carry this little device around, it does not have any cap, or lanyard hole, so it’s really not ideal for portability. The SD card actually slides in front and beneath the USB plug part, not at the side or at the back of the device. Removing the card is slightly tricky, as there is no eject mechanism. However given my needs as above, it’s perfect. SO, FULL MARKS. However, do be certain of what you want, as portability may not be its strong point!
I do photography as a hobby and shoot primarily in raw so I have more control in correcting lighting/color/etc… Because of this my photo files are usually very large and transferring via most cameras built in USB ports is painfully slow. Luckily rocketek has this little gem. Transfer speeds are very, very good for USB 3.0 – I consistently can get between 80-90 MB/sec when reading. When transferring 64 to 120GB of pictures, this speed makes a huge difference. It’s also very compact and does not have a cable which would eventually wear out. The build quality is excellent – small, solid, easy to throw in my camera bag so I have it with whenever I might need it.
The card reader has been working well up until now, and I haven’t had any problems using it. Its size it is really good to be carried everywhere. It is a little bigger than a quarter. Although, if you wonder about carrying it on a keychain the answer is no. There is no hole or a key ring to put it on your keychain. I didn’t really care about this as I thought of disassembling it to use in a project that I planned on getting to someday. So keep that in mind if you were looking for some kind of pen-drive keychain.
The material from which this product was made out of doesn’t feel sloppy as other SD readers I have seen out there. Further to my previous comment about disassembling it, I found that it is difficult to do so because all is really closed made of an only solid plastic case. It is not made of two parts that just pop up to be opened. So although I wasn’t expecting to be that way, this is a positive point just because it’s shown to be a good product after all.
I like the fact that instead of putting the micro SD card on the back, it goes into the usb tip. I also have to mention that there isn’t any cap to cover the tip, which it can be a disadvantage. The SD card fits kind of tight inside the slot, so it is very improbable that it will fall down due to the lack of a cap. Yet, you still have to be careful and keep an eye on it if you’re on your way down to somewhere and as the saying goes “better safe than sorry”.
Great little device, perfect as a portable digital suitcase for all my files, music and videos. Solid build quality, very easy to slot in & remove micro SD card.
Would have given it a 5 if it weren’t for 3 points – 1. No notch/loop to allow me to attach it to a keyring; 2. Didn’t allow me to use a 32gb micro SD card, formatted to FAT32 to use with my firestick bus an OTG USB cable (might be an issue with the firestick, but not entirely sure on that front); 3. No included micro USB adaptor, although that’s not a big issue, as they’re cheap.
Aside from that pretty damned good, especially for the price. My main gripe is lack of keyring attachment option, as I’d appreciate that convenience, rather than stuffing it in my wallet or bag (thus more likely to get lost, as it’s so small).
Has worked very well with USB 3 XHC micro SD cards with my computer.
I am very happy with this reader:)
It is detected as USB3.0 and with my new SanDisk 256 Class 10 A1 SDXC memory it performs exceptionaly
Maybe even a tad faster than my other purchased Kiwi card i reviewed earlier
Please see my images to show speeds and info but…
76MB sec for writes and 97MB for reads isnt to be sniffed at 🙂
Well don Rocketek ill be BAAAACK for more
What can I say except WOW.
I have been using memory card readers for quite some time and not used one as fast as this. It really is a world’s apart in speed with some.
It’s very discrete, and whilst the port for the memory card is in a surprising place, It’s compact and doesn’t damage the card.
Really useful piece of kit – we will buy more.
