I already own the NEEWER Z1 flash for my Sony a7iv, an upgrade from a very simple Godox flash for when I was dabbling in some wedding photography.
There’s functions on this flash I may never use, notably the additional portait pop out flash, but I can see the merit of that feature and I’m sure it’s worthwhile for portrait photographers.
I can spam this flash for a while with 6-10fps shots, handy for BIF at an aviary I like to visit.
I basically only use my flash in TTL mode so won’t explore much else of what it has to offer.
I can confirm this also works with the v1 & v2 wireless flash modules from NEEWER as I have both.
This product was sent to me for review, as part of Amazon Vine. The below is my own real-world experience of using it.
For clarity, I am very new to using this type of equipment, so my review will be coming from a novice angle. That being said, I have done my best to immerse myself in tutorials, to try and understand the device better.
The set is well-presented in the box, and it is quite comprehensive – you are getting the Speedlite, battery, charger, stand, and a particularly useful soft case for the device itself. The pouch has quite a snug fit, but adds a decent layer of protection for the flash (the manual states that it is not weatherproof and should not be used in wet weather, so the case is a much-needed accessory). It would fit into a small-ish camera bag, though that is of course dependent on the space you have available.
Moving on to build-quality, the Speedlite feels quite sturdy, and has a sleek finish. As with similar devices, the bulb head can be angled or rotated – I found the mechanism for this was smooth and quiet, making it easier to fine-tune the positioning of the flash, when needed. The control panel has a set of well-spaced buttons, and all of these provide nice, responsive feedback. Finally, all of the settings are viewed on an LCD screen that is bright and clear (with options to adjust this to your own comfort levels/if the environment requires it).
As this model is specific to Sony cameras, I have been using it with my A77ii, without experiencing any issues. Though the device is somewhat bulky, it does not add too much weight to my camera, whilst the hot-shoe lock is particularly useful – no need to worry about it detaching suddenly, or falling off.
There are all of the features that you would expect to find (such as TTL, Manual, and Multi flash modes), and the dial on the back allows a greater level of control over these. I have quite enjoyed learning and experimenting with all of the different levels of flash available, and have actually been impressed by the speed of the reload – the ‘recycle’ button has stayed lit throughout all of my testing (even with my rapidly pressing the button). The flash itself is extremely powerful and vibrant at the highest setting, though I would have also liked to see some kind of diffuser in the box (a previous version of this set has a ‘dome’ accessory included), because there’s no way to soften the light otherwise.
So far, I have found the battery life to be exceptional – it has barely depleted after at least 30 minutes of use. Re-charging it is also straightforward, using the included power supply (handy for that kind of battery).
In summary, I would recommend it as a great starting point if you’re interested in flash photography, or setting up a studio. A good value item.
I can’t recommend this NEEWER Z2-S 2.4G TTL Round Head Flash Speedlite for Sony enough! It is super durable with an Upgraded UI and 2 Adjustable Modeling Lamps. It has great battery life (7.4V/2600mAh Battery). It really is a high performance flash and I can’t recommend it enough. Would definitely repurchase. Super value for money.
PROS
-works well on my A7IV: good TTL performance
-good power, for a speedlight
-good lithium battery, lots of power, fast recycling
-some people might find the modelling lamps useful (I tend to never use them)
-decent build quality
-useful physical TCM switch (assuming it has made an accurate TTL measurement)
-excellent value, and vastly cheaper than the Sony equivalent
CONS
-terrible optical slave, it’s not sensitive at all
NOTES
-the term “stops” is being used incorrectly in this listing, in photo 5 (there are not 81 stops between full power and 1/256, this is a range of 8 stops)
-given the cost of the Sony speed light, this is a _great_ deal (and seems to performs as well, if not better, than the top Sony speedlight)
-there is a whole ecosystem of radio controlled Neewer lights. This is the only light of theirs that I have, so I’m afraid I couldn’t test that functionality (but it’s a great feature for a series of lights to have, so nice to control power from the camera).
-for anyone who thinks that a round head on a speedlight is going to give a softer light than that of a rectangular speedlight, this is not the case (unless the flashes are being used as macro lights, _really_ close to a small subject, like an egg, or an insect).
MY STAR RATINGS:
1* substandard, mostly cons
2** barely acceptable, cons outweigh the pros
3*** meets the basic requirements, cons balance the pros
4**** good product, pros outweigh the cons
5***** exceptional, all (or almost all) pros
The NEEWER Z2-S 2.4G TTL Round Head Flash Speedlite for Sony has become an indispensable tool in my photography kit. Its sophisticated design and robust build exude quality, making it a reliable companion for various shooting conditions. The upgraded UI is intuitive, allowing for seamless adjustments on the fly. The two adjustable modeling lamps are particularly useful, providing versatile lighting options that adapt to different environments. The TTL and manual quick switch, coupled with the TCM key, streamline the shooting process, enhancing efficiency and creativity.
In practice, the Z2-S’s performance has exceeded my expectations. With 76Ws of power and the ability to achieve 1/8000s high-speed sync, it handles fast-paced shoots effortlessly. The 7.4V/2600mAh battery is impressive, offering up to 480 full-power flashes on a single charge, ensuring I never miss a critical moment. Whether I’m shooting in a studio or on location, this speedlight delivers consistent and powerful illumination, making it a standout choice for any photographer seeking reliability and flexibility in their lighting equipment.
his speedlite’s a proper gem! it’s got a robust performance with a round head that gives a lovely soft light. the TTL/M quick switch and TCM key make shifting between modes a breeze, which is spot-on for varying lighting situations. its high-speed sync is ace for freezing fast-moving subjects, even in bright sunlight. plus, the adjustable modelling lamps are a brilliant touch, letting you preview your shots perfectly. the 7.4V/2600mAh battery is reliable, lasting ages without frequent recharges. though it’s a bit bulky, the build feels sturdy and durable. overall, it’s a top pick for any photographer needing a reliable, powerful, and user-friendly flash. highly recommend!
It’s got a good amount of power and the round head gives a nice soft light. The TTL/M quick switch TCM key is handy for quickly switching between TTL and manual modes, which is great for adapting to different lighting conditions on the fly. The flash itself is powerful and supports high-speed sync allows me to capture fast-moving subjects with crisp detail even in bright conditions. The 2 adjustable modeling lamps are a nice addition, providing additional light for previewing how the flash will affect the scene before taking the shot. The 7.4V/2600mAh battery is reliable and offers enough juice for extended shooting sessions without needing frequent recharges. It’s a good choice for photographers who need a dependable flash that can keep up with their needs. The build quality feels solid enough.
The first thing that stands out is the two adjustable modeling lamps, which have been a game-changer for my portrait photography. They provide excellent preview lighting and help me get the perfect setup before taking the shot.
The TTL/M quick switch is incredibly convenient, allowing me to switch between automatic and manual modes seamlessly. This feature, combined with the TCM key, gives me total control and flexibility, making it easier to adapt to different shooting conditions.
At 76Ws, this speedlite packs quite a punch, delivering consistent and powerful light. The 1/8000s high-speed sync (HSS) is a dream for outdoor shoots, letting me use a wide aperture even in bright sunlight without any issues. I’ve been able to capture stunning images with a shallow depth of field, something that wasn’t as easy with my previous flash.
With 480 full power flashes per charge, the battery life is impressive and reliable for long sessions. I haven’t had to worry about the flash dying on me in the middle of a shoot, which is a huge relief.
Overall, this speedlite has significantly improved my photography experience with my Sony Alpha camera. It’s powerful, versatile, and user-friendly, making it an essential addition to my toolkit. Highly recommend it to fellow photographers looking for a reliable and high-performing flash!
The ‘video’ above, apart from the title, is the NEEWER Z2-S being used on my A6700 in burst mode – around 10 FPS, in TTL mode, output from the flash was constant in intensity, which I thought good.
In the box, apart from the flash unit, in a padded cloth case, is the battery, charger unit, USB Lead and mains power adaptor (5v / 2A 10W), in my case UK plug, stand for remote use, and several user manuals / information leaflets.
My principle reason for getting this Speedlite was for Macro Photography, my current one, although fine for single shots, cannot keep up with burst shooting. For this purpose the NEEWER Z2-S has performed admirably (unlike me – I have to get used to the added weight) and, set at 1/32 or 1/64 was able to keep shooting until the buffer of my camera was full (50+ shots)
In TTL and with the subject around 3 metres from the lens, only 2 or 3 continuous flashes were taken before the flash needed to power cycle, leaving blank frames in the burst.
I do not have a remote trigger, so am unable to comment on radio operation.
Despite taking several hundred photos in burst mode (so not full power flashes) I have yet to need to recharge the battery. But it does claim 480 full power flashes, I’m tempted to believe this isn’t inaccurate!
CON: I normally use a Smallrig cage on my camera, the base of the flash that clamps the hot shoe into the camera is around 1mm too deep to permit the electrical contacts to make a reliable contact.
So, I bought a Neewer cage – easy logic to follow… No, it doesn’t work with that either, same issue. I have advised Neewer of this, as it seemed illogical that the designers hadn’t tested it with the Z1 S (predecessor, but same fittings, apparently) and made a recess in the front bar to accommodate their Speedlite!
OK, with the Neewer cage (but not the Smallrig) the issue is easily resolved – loosen the cage from the base of the camera, insert the flash in the shoe and clamp down, tighten the base screw. This works for me.
Fortunately both cages are quick to remove, but it is frustrating nonetheless. (I have a “L” bracket also, so can still add my LED light fittings for backlighting)
So, aside from the last point, I’m most impressed with the NEEWER Z2-S, even a cycle time of around 1.5 seconds after a full power flash isn’t too unreasonable. It is a keeper for me, I’ll mill an arc into one of the cages to make the flash fit, and hope that Neewer, in particular, modify their cage going forward.
No problem giving 5 stars, for my ‘needs’ it fits the bill perfectly. Although I was tempted to drop 1 star because of the cage design…
I have already reviewed the Nikon version of this here on Amazon so there is little I can add to that review, as such I will paste what I said before here.
**When this was offered to me via the Vine program I was initially hesitant as I’d just picked up a pair of Godox Speedlites for my Canon Sony and Fuji systems and rarely use my Nikon camera, but as this was sent to me for free after 10 minutes of humming and aaahing I thought why not
And boy am I happy I did.
As mentioned earlier I rarely use my Nikon these days and it spends most of it’s time on loan to my son, as such I have been soldiering on with an SB-900 which I was always happy with as it did what I needed.
This is on another level, I won’t go into all the technical specs as I am still learning myself, you can read the listing for that, but two things that stand out for me and, this won’t be big news to everyone, is the dedicated switch to quickly go from M mode to TTL and the very fast recycling.
I’m still meeting to grips with the LCD menu system though it seems fairly simple, though I haven’t had occasion to shoot professionally with it yet so it is on the back. burner as I’m still on the new Godox learning curve.
Would I buy this with my own money?
Hell Yeah**
One thing I dod omit to mention from my initial review was the size, this is by not means a tiny speedlite but is non the worse for that, in fact one of my pet peeves with speedlites is the head drooping whenever I attach anything to it, this hasn’t’ exhibited this behaviour at all which I am putting down to the solid construction.
There are a small group of names that are taking on the big boys and besting them, in my opinion Neewer is spearheading that group.
Good flash simple to use
But having sent back my second one both had a problem with
The hot shoe not making contact, the locking clamp dosnt make a good connection to the cameras hotshoe leaving the flash unit lose which leads to miss fires
My second unit the flash head was loose after turning it left past 45 degrees, so I was unable to use a diffuser dome on the
After being contacted by the supplier they issued me with a replacement and I’m happy to say that my replacement unit is flawless the hotshoe clamp is strong and the head is stiff when using a diffusing Done
all in all 10/10 and 12/10 for Customer services
