This lens was laughed at when announced but it’s a game changer. Image quality matches my previous 24-70gmii in such a small lens. I can crop into 75mm in aps-c mode which is plenty.
Minimum focusing distance helps with unique shots and the lens starting at 50mm is perfect for my type of shooting. 10/10.
This lens is fantastic at what it’s designed for – compact 24-50mm, covering 3 key focal lengths, in an incredibly compact form. And, most importantly, it’s sharp – really sharp!
I’ve spent a few days thoroughly testing it, against my existing lenses that cover a similar focal length:
Sony G Master 24-70mm II
Sigma 28-70mm F2.8
Summary findings:
1. The size feels absolutely perfect on my A7C II, MUCH better than the G Master
2. In most cases it’s sharper than the G Master – mainly in the center, but also in most other areas
3. Focusing is just as quick as the G Master – unless tracking where the G Master may be just a touch stickier
4. The feel is nicer than my Sigma 28-70, which now feels long and thin
5. The price is high but worth it – particularly when you consider the G Master is over 700 more
When I check all my photos, 70mm is the least used of the main 4 (24, 35, 50, 70) so I really don’t think I will miss it.
Is it perfect?
Almost, but the G Master delivers just a little more contrast, which I guess you could adjust in the camera?
I have decided that I will keep this lens and sell my Sony G Master 24-70mm iI.
Another amazing lens from Sony.
