I already had one of the older “Kasa” switches and needed another. I was a little dubious as the cost is so low, yet setup was very straightforward and the power consumption feature is a bonus, although I don’t use that.
I just wanted a remote on/off switch, no integration to Alexa, etc.
It works just as well as the older Kasa switch. Superb value and highly recommended.
I bought one of these smart plugs as so much cheaper than the other smart devices I have on another platform.
Before you buy, remember that this only works on 2.4ghz. Most routers output on both 2.4 & 5.0, so should be no problem. The thing is my wi-fi network is a mesh system off a BT hub. The BT hub does output both frequencies so it is important to make sure your phone is on the 2.4ghz band before you attempt installation.
The problem was that the BT hub didn’t specify which frequency it was using and unlike some netwwork/routers did not show an option which one to connect to. Logging into the BT hub settings showed that the router was outputting both frquencies but despite this the option of logging into the 2.4 band did not exist.
Researching this, it was necessary to go into the BT settings and turn off the 5.0ghz band leaving only the 2.4. Put your phone on to that network as it will be then 2.4ghz. Re-start the plug installation. Frustratingly it STILL said no internet. I was about to send back when I gave one more try and manuaally emtered the SSID and password and it worked fine as does the plug itself with good range. Phew! Hope this helps someone as it drove me half mad.
Well made and easy to set up from my Android phone. It’s easy to set up time schedules and it allows times set based on Sunset and Sunrise with offsets as required. The power usage information is also useful.
One unexpected use is to make use of a difficult to access plug socket. I have my electric blanket set up to one, this is decadent luxury, and I can switch it on while having a late evening dram, or leave it on a fixed time setting.
I also have one that I have set up with a bit more automation. I have a temperature and humidity sensor in my study (which is separated from the rest of the house) and a small oil-filled radiator. I have set up an automated programme so that the heater switches on and off during my working hours based on the temperature of the sensor. It was very easy to set up and very effective in use!
It allowed me to see that by using a smart switch to turn off my home entertainment system – I could easily save 40 a year electric.
It also allowed me to see that there is a 400w difference per cycle of the washing machine, between super eco and normal mode (which I used to use). Add into that I now have a time of day tariff and it has again saved me rough 40 – so buying this has easily saved me a minimum of 120 (turning media unit off when not in use, and finding out actual usage for washing machine and dishwasher modes – saving nearly 350 kWh of electric a year).
Smart features work really well, via the App, as well as Alexa integration.
The only issue is, it doesn’t work through the Kasa TP link app – you have to have the Tapo app – which is a bit of a pain as I’ve built up an eco system of Kasa plugs.
Not a huge problem – but a small pain – unless you control it directly through Amazon Alexa app or with a voice assistant like Alexa.
Good product, which has already saved me over 100, but you don’t need it to know to turn your media unit off at the plug when not in use, and to also use the Eco modes on dishwashers and washing machines etc – I may have saved you that money by telling you my experiences!
