Among other things this film is a superb homage the the Rome/films of Dario Argento. Lighting, palette, plot devices, street ambiance, all pitch perfect. Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Highly recommended as a stand out from the current dross that masquerades as “horror”. Oh, and loved the trampolining nun. Genius.

In Rome in 1971, a young American nun entering the church uncovers a conspiracy involving the birth of the Anti Christ. Prequel to the classic 70’s horror movie The Omen feeling similar to recent horror movie Immaculate but still a slow burn and creepy horror movie with a good performance from Nell Tiger Free in the lead and good supporting performances from Ralph Ineson and cameos from Charles Dance and Bill Nighy leading up to the start of The Omen.

I wasn’t expecting to much but this is a superb film, great acting so round, atmospheric, genuinely disturbing moments and to cap it off an amazing beautiful soundtrack.

Top notch acting, cinematography and soundtrack. The First Omen is one of the best horror movies of the year and the only real fault are a couple of obviously studio mandated screenplay additions. There is absolutely zero reason to give this movie the lowest rating just because it changes a couple of minor details in a series that never cared about consistency or 1:1 continuity in the slightest. Watch it and rate it for yourselves.

I wasn’t particularly excited when I heard they were doing a prequel to The Omen, for starters prequels, by and large, tend to suck, and this series ran out of gas a long time ago. Color me seriously surprised at what a strong, confident horror movie this is in it’s own right, and easily the darkest movie of the franchise. It also contains some of the most upsetting, nightmarish imagery in a mainstream horror since Hereditary (There’s one shot that is so graphic I genuinely could not believe they got away with it). It does succumb to some eye rolling, utterly unnecessary prequel tropes sadly (Which feel like they were tacked on by the studio) but that aside this is really impressive and has no right to be as smart, disturbing, beautifully crafted and terrifically acted as it is. Well worth checking out if you are a big fan of old school, twisted 70’s/80’s religious horror.

Purchased this to stream on Prime. I always found the Omen series a bit hit and miss. The original was a classic but the others were a bit meh. This one however I thoroughly enjoyed. The score was excellent, the atmosphere was consistently creepy throughout and some stellar performances from the cast. Granted some of the continuity has been altered from the original which can’t make this a direct prequel but I didn’t mind that at all. I see it as an altered timeline from the original and it held its own extremely well in my opinion. It had some excellent nods to the previous movies while giving its own spin on things which was most welcome.
Looking forward to future instalments and rewatching this again. Entertaining movie.

The First Omen just dropped on Disney+ and for me it’s the best horror of the year.

Like Mike Flanagan taking on the Ouija prequel, Arkasha Stephenson takes on another dead franchise & makes something far better than anyone would ever expect.
On paper the story is pretty routine Devil stuff (and the twist obvious) but with a good director, cast, effects & music it burrows under your skin regardless. There are images from this that will never leave your mind.
