A cancer patient and her cat become trapped in New York at the start of an alien invasion hunted by aliens that hunt by sound. Prequel to A Quiet Place showing how the alien invasion started and how the survivors learned to stay silent. Tense and creepy with good performances from Lupita N’YongO and Joseph Quinn this introduces new characters to the franchise.
is a 2024 American apocalyptic horror film written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, based on a story he conceived with John Krasinski. It is the third instalment in the A Quiet Place film series, serving as a spin-off and prequel. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o as a terminally ill woman during the early stages of an invasion in New York City by extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. The supporting cast includes Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou, who reprises his role from A Quiet Place Part II.
Development on A Quiet Place: Day One began in November 2020, with Jeff Nichols set to write and direct. Despite a completed script, Nichols dropped out of the film in October 2021. In January 2022, Sarnoski was announced to replace Nichols as writer and director; he was approached by Krasinski because of his feature directorial debut Pig (2021). Principal photography took place from February 2023 to April 2023 in London, England. The production reunited Sarnoski with several collaborators from Pig, including Wolff, cinematographer Pat Scola, and composer Alexis Grapsas.
A Quiet Place: Day One premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 26, 2024, and was released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on June 28, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed $178.2 million worldwide.
Not a horror, an alien invasion aspect of the Quiet Place franchise with the character’s story at the front and centre but I do feel this world is done unless they do the Military side of the story or show the final days.
Of the three movies so far this could be the most intelligent in that the characters have more to them, regards personality, history and back story. The action scenes happen through out the movie, not just at the beginning and end as in the other two. Also the action scenes are more intense with larger, with wide angle aerial shots of the Death Angels climbing and running over New York like gaint ants over running Lego bricks, as well as up close in your face encounters. The two lead characters do engage your empathy and you do feel invested in them and there is some ha! moments with the third lead, the cat Frodo.
What lets it down; some of the safe moments between all the action can feel a little slow and lacking, but I think that’s down to the fact the humans, even when safe, can’t make any sound or the Death Angels will get them and this is reinforced with there being little to no background music. Sometimes it’s effective in that it reinforces the tention but sometimes it’s almost boring. Also, this is both a strong point and a weekness, the action is happening, from we can see, to the whole of New York and from what news we get it’s all over the world, and we are spending the entire movie watching extensively two insignificant people, and a cat, trying to survive, what about the governments, the armed forces, where’s the hero’s who are going to save the world?
An action plan war movie to save the planet might have been the obvious way to go with direct confrontational war against the aliens, as per ‘Independence Day’ but somehow this seems more intimate and human.
