Very compact, though feels a tad flimsy. Plays CDs and BDs well – can’t comment on writing. The built in cable is convenient, especially with the two different plugs, but could do with being a little longer.
This drive works well and will be useful for anyone who needs to see the content of CDs, especially as computers and laptops these days are not made with CD drives.
This worked fine for all the features it states which was positive as the build quality feels a bit cheap for the price. Something a bit more solid would be more reassuring but it just feels like it will break easily. It does pack a lot in though for the size of it.
It’s easy to use and compatible with my laptop and desktop. The reading and writing speeds are impressive, and it handles various disc formats without any issues. I appreciate the dual-interface design, which makes it versatile for different devices. Highly recommended for those needing an external drive.
The external Blu Ray drive arrived well packaged in a sturdy cardboard box with the device enclosed in a bubble wrap bag inside. The drive looks to be solidly built to withstand normal wear and tear. The pack also included a user manual.
In use, I found my midrange, 18 month old, Dell computer reacted rather slowly to the drive’s operation. The sales webpage and user manual advises that users should download a free CyberLink utility first to check the drive’s compatibility with their computer, and I would strongly urge any potential purchaser to do so before buying this unit.
I particularly like that the drive has an integrated Type C & USB 3.0 connection cable. When the drive is not in use, this cable fits neatly into an inset on the back of the drive’s casing (see photo). However, the cable is rather short. When using the drive in tandem with a laptop this shouldn’t present a problem. However, I have a desktop computer which sits on the floor beside my office desk and the cable wasn’t long enough to plug the drive into the lowest connection port without placing the drive itself on a box to raise it – that is, the cable wasn’t long enough for the drive to be placed on the floor alongside my computer.
Another minor issue is that the user manual stated that an “After-sale Customer Service Card” should have been included in the pack (see photo), and I didn’t receive one. After this information is printed “*1” which suggests a footnote exists to qualify this statement — unfortunately I couldn’t find any appropriate footnote in the user manual that might apply to this item.
Firstly, getting blu-rays to play on Windows has never been an easy process. I first had an internal drive back in 2010, which is still going strong, but used to require expensive software (TMT3) to get discs playing in Windows 7 at the time. I’ve not tried reinstalling the software in years as it’s not Win 11 compatible and used to cause issues in Win 10.
Case in point, I went through multiple steps to add playback to VLC on my little Surface Go and while it eventually played, it stuttered badly and artefacts were on the screen. I’ve just tried hooking the drive up to my proper tower PC and although Windows suggests ‘Blu Ray Player+’ for free, that just doesn’t load anything.
You’re therefore far better off using this drive to rip any old discs that you have to a digital format, and sharing those out from your PC or a NAS.
The drive works fine in this regard, didn’t need plugging into anything beyond a single USB-C or USB-A (a two way cable is supplied and tucks into the rear of the drive).
No other case or anything supplied with the drive so you’ll need to keep it safe (I had a similar DVD-RW that came with a velvet slip case in comparison).
Also burns physical media (DVD and CD-R) but unfortunately have no longer got any discs to test this out with – can’t exactly nip down to Staples or Maplin any more either!
I think the drive may be a Pioneer one but unable to verify from the information presented in Device Manager.
For years I used a Bluray drive as a backup media with an internal drive, however my latest Pc doesnt have any optical drives, so this is a great little option to stick inn a drawer and use to access those backups when needed.
The one I got uses the Sony Optiarc BC-5540 Drive, which was manufactured in 2011, so I’m guessing these are either recycled out of old business laptops or were overstocks that have been sat in a warehouse. I’m guessing therefore that the drive you get may not always be the same model.
I’m all for these being recycled rather than just going it landfill, and its been really well refurbished, the casing is clearly new, as is the front panel, and then the drive identifies to windows as an XD External Blu Ray, which must be coming from the USB controller board.
Everything works exactly as you would expect, and the USB interface hasn’t given me any trouble reading any of the supported disc types. I initially thought this was a bit expensive, but after looking at other options this is right in the ballpark, prices have increased since I last bought an optical drive it seems (which makes sense as demand has plummeted)
As far as I’m concerned this is a great choice if you need an external optical drive with Bluray reading capabilities.
