Great controller so five stars but I’ve got to send it back.
Completely my fault – I mistakenly believed it would work with a Nintendo Switch but had confirmation from 8BitDo support (who were quick and easy to deal with!) that this isn’t the case so I’m returning the controller and honestly a bit gutted I don’t have another reason to keep it.
The tl;dr of this is that this is a massive upgrade over the already excellent Ultimate C controller – already one of the best budget controllers I had ever tried. Well worth it. But more than that – this is a massive change from the previous generation.
I’ve been a fan of 8bitdo for a while now. I have a couple of types of the M30 and I’d been using the SN30 Pro+ since it came out. I picked up the Ultimate C back in June when I actually found out that it existed – only to see the Ultimate 2C announced a few weeks later!
The standout feature here though is the hall effect sticks and triggers. If you’ve not used hall effect sticks before then, well…they don’t feel any different! What they offer though is better precision and importantly – much better lasting precision than potentiometer-based sticks. What this translates to for us gamers is that there is much less chance of any sort of stick drift and the accuracy is a lot better. If you’ve ever used joy.cpl to measure stick movement or trigger presses – going half way on either of these will register a rock solid reading – no wavering. In terms of actual ‘feel’ this is still down to the springs and again these are perfectly balanced (as all things should be…). Triggers are quite light but very responsive.
Bumper buttons this time around are clicky switches (I *think* it was a membrane last time – at least they felt ‘mushier’). While I prefer the tactile feel of the mushier types – these feel quite low profile and very responsive.
This brings me on to my main surprise here. When the Xbox One came I out I picked one up along with 3 controllers (so the kids could play Minecraft). All 3 of the d-pads started going flaky within the first 18 months. Ever since then I have been quite negative towards dome switches used in d-pads.
This d-pad has dome switches – and they feel awesome! It’s made me realise I should have put my prejudices aside (after all I quite regularly fire up my Saturn and use it’s 28 year old joypad that still works perfectly!).
This is easily the best d-pad I have used on a non-fighting game geared controller. Low profile, accurate, easy to get diagonals, responsive. And a central pivot. In fact I’ve just sat here twirling the d-pad to make those ASMR-like clicks while I thought up the previous sentence. While a circular, Saturn-style d-pad would be my preference (you can’t have everything) – this has worked out perfectly and was ideal for a quick run through of Batsugun. And while an M30 would be better for pad-controlled fighting games – this was absolutely fine cranking out dragon punches.
Possibly the only slight negative I have here is the position of the newly added ‘L4/R4’ buttons. On most controllers these are added as ‘paddle’ controls on the back of the controller, generally operated by your middle fingers. Here, these are smaller bumpers that sit next to L1 and R1. They work absolutely fine and you can map any other button to them (I always do stick clicks i.e. L3 and R3) but it does mean taking your finger off the triggers. Maybe on the Ultimate 3C we can get paddles…
At 17.99 this is an absolute bargain of a controller.
The left bumper bugs out and double presses of one click I just use this for one game on PC RL. It does have better build quality than the new xbox controllers but I may just get an old xboxone controller for the durability ps5 new controller have stick drift issues cant say this one has had any of that but the buttons definitely last longer on ps controllers just prefer the xbox layou
I got this to play Hades II early access like a pro 1337 gam3r and it works instantly, plug and play as advertised and was super simply to map. Plus it looks nice, feels nice, very good.
After having some drift with official Xbox pads, I looked into the Ultimate 2C. First off the Mint color scheme drew me to it instantly because blue and orange are my favorite colors. I’d love a slightly bluer blue but the orange still pops hard. Anyways the amazing colors should speak for themselves. I love the d-pad; while it looks like a Nintendo 64 d-pad, it has a good feel for diagonals and isn’t loud. I was happy with it in any genre. The bumpers are VERY clicky however, and I actually like it quite a bit. The programmable L4 and R4 have even more of a click to them, were easy to program, and were easy enough to find with your finger, while also being able to forget they are there. I can update if I run into any issues with the sticks but from the first few weeks they are remarkable so far and have very good throw with no dead-zone issues. I’m not that sensitive to the pull on triggers so nothing to remark about, I think it’s very comparable to other offerings.
I just can’t believe I got all of this for $20. I game at the computer desk so I play wired, and this is doing everything I want while looking like something I customized (nope, these colors are just that wild and saturated.) If I could find something to be mad about I would share it with you, but I think 8bitdo has really figured this all out. Curious to see where they go from here, and the next color schemes.
I have been using 2 PS5 dual sense controller, in past I got Xbox 9th gen controller. For feeling, button quality, body quality, 8bit Do C2 controller simply is the best of the best. Recommended.
Purchased the new 2C wired version for my steam deck and it works flawlessly so far. While testing it I accidentally turned on turbo mode which would repeatedly trigger an assigned button when held and thought that it was some sort of defect, but I was relieved to find out that it was a feature. Holding the star button + assigned button/trigger will enable/disable this.
Had a few friends use the controller and they also thought that it was great. We played Castle Crashers and Unrailed with it.
So far it works flawlessly. Will update this in the next 6 months or so if any issue arises.
