All I could find in B&Q was a big sive and I didn’t want to get a bigger spreader so this was absolutely perfect.
So easy to apply by hand to small or large spaces
I use this spreader to add iron to my lawn to keep it looking green and lush. If I were to use my hands for this task, they would likely smell of metal for an entire day. This shaker, however, provides me with the ability to control the amount of iron I spread with ease. The only issue I have with it is that it’s quite bulky, making it a bit of a challenge to store in my shed.
This is a well made, sturdy spreader. Using this has made spreading grass seed and lawn feed much easier. Previously I had walked up and down the garden with handfuls of seed or feed and having to keep refilling my hands. No more!
The lid section turns to allow different openings to let different amounts of the content through. The contents slide through nice and easily and a simple left/right wrist action achieves a good spread.
The plastics are a nice tough plastic, not the brittle kind that breaks easily, this unit would take being dropped from a height quite easily and I don’t doubt would not be damaged.
A simple to use, well made spreader. Highly recommended
I got this for my husband to use as he was due to sow grass seed on a freshly dug area of the garden. We would normally scatter seed by hand and it does make it patchy.
I gave him this to try and he was delighted with it, it gives a much more even spread. You fill the bottom of the shaker up and then put the insert in. This insert has different holes in it and these are used for different sizes of seed. It can also be used for fertilisers.
This is so simple and yet it is making a difference. It is not too heavy even when filled and is a simple process to scatter and spread seed/ fertiliser.
Delighted with this and would happily recommend it.
The Fert Shaker is a fantastic tool that I love. It features three different spreading dispense holes, allowing for versatile use. The shaker is of good quality and has a convenient lip that helps me distribute the contents evenly. It’s particularly great for spreading grass seed, but it can be used for various other purposes as well. A fab shaker that makes the task much easier and more efficient.
Though this large and well made item is part of a range by Grass Gains, it could be used with all makes of grass seed or with granular fertilisers. Strong and robust, its construction is simple but effective. There are just 2 sections – a jug style base with a long lip and a top section that can be adjusted to reflect the size of the contents.
Not cheap – but in my view this is worth the money. Every year my partner seems to need to do some lawn repair and this past year we’ve had big problems with moles – which thankfully exited of their own accord after a concerted campaign using solar mole repellers, which worked. But we were left with a lot of mole hills and damage to grass.
This device has really helped with even distribution of grass seeds in the affected area. One thing I really liked that just looking at the shaker I’d not realised? – the contents come out down the long lip which is grooved. Well thought out, I’d recommend this. So useful – and as it’s so tough, you’re only likely to need to buy once.
This is quite a large and chunky bit of kit: It’s about 34cm tall and at its widest point it’s about 22cm wide.
It’s made of thick, strong and sturdy HDPE plastic, which as far as I’m aware, is one of the highest quality plastics out there, so I was happy to see that.
You can fill this up with compost, dry fertilizer powder / granules, seeds – anything you want to sprinkle. It’s like a giant spice shaker! Just like a spice shaker, it has a swivel-top with different hole sizes from big holes, little holes to a large opening to pour out the contents at different amounts.
If you need to sprinkle anything in a large scale – this’ll do nicely. The sticker on it says the recommended amount it can hold is 500g.
My one niggle is that it had a big advert sticker on it for the brand’s website which was difficult to remove and left behind an annoying sticky white residue.
Well made/moulded fertiliser and seed shaker. The top green distribution dial rotates and clicks into set positions firmly so there is no chance of movement during use. The complete lid section has clear open/closed markings to aid removal of the lid. Again it is very secure and no chance of it coming off during use.
Couple of slight negatives:
I did not find the handle particularly, the edges where the grip is rebated digs into my fingers.
There is no country of manufacture marked on the shaker or shown on the listing/product website. There is also no indication if the product is made from recycled plastic or not. 1 star deducted for this.
What you see in their product listing photos is what you get (except the lawn feed, you have to buy that separately). Wish I had this two weeks ago when I was sprinking lawn feed by hand and the dust gave me a sore throat for a few days, would’ve been so easy sprinkling with this natty shaker. Very robust, easy to open/close. Will last for years and get multiple uses. Price at time of this review was 18
I was delighted to be able to try this product out as I recently had the unenviable job of re-seeding my lawn after the moss had taken hold in the corner of our shady garden.
The shaker arrived in good condition and was immediately struck by how thick and sturdy the unit felt. It was also larger than I expected meaning fewer refill trips. Opening the lid was easy enough thanks to the large opening and solid fitment. The top comprises of three different grill sizes, changed by simply rotating the green perforated cover.
The small holes were ideal for spreading seeds making the task an absolute breeze. The large spout recess allowed me to spread the seeds evenly whilst maintaining a good speed as I moved around the lawn. After a few weeks of growth, I spread my moss prevention/fertiliser granules this time using the larger holes. Again, the Fert Shaker made the job extremely easy and was able to maintain a good even distribution throughout.
The whole process was far easier than my usual method of spreading by hand and was a great deal quicker too. I am fairly confident that I am going to have good even growth this year compared to my patchy efforts of the past. I would have happily paid the current price of 17.99 for this considering how much time I have saved with this little gem.
