    Consigliato

For years I have been wandering the world looking for a hot shoe cover. Not just any hot shoe cover though – those are a dime a dozen, as they say. I know those hot shoe covers, I know them well. You slide them in and they sit there …and that’s all. They just sit there. Sure, they cover the camera hot shoe but so what. If you lose it you just replace it with another one just as mundane and move on. And I’ve seen these lost hot shoes myself, scattering, multiplying then scattering even more across the the ground. I see them but like everyone else I don’t bother to pick one up and keep it as a spare. Why bother doing that, what would be the point? It would just be another mundane hot shoe cover.
Then one day while looking for a small rig for my Fujifilm XH2, I came across a company called Smallrig who made small rigs for cameras (who woulda thunk it). While scrolling through their products I saw they had hot shoe covers as well. I scrolled on …then stopped.
I scrolled back and stopped on the hot shoe covers, in particular the ones for the Fujifilm brand cameras. There was something …different. It was as if the hot shoe cover was looking back at me just as I was looking at it, maybe even seeing through me, something beyond me that even I was yet to see in myself, within my very soul. In that moment I ignored everything in my cart and went straight to clicking the ‘order now’ option with express delivery. I had to have that hot shoe and had to have it yesterday; it was our joined destiny!
For an outsider looking in they would have seen the order arrived a day sooner than promised. Regardless , for me it was an eternity but as anxious as I was, I couldn’t help but notice the sun breaking through dark rain clouds the moment the DHL van turned into my street, driving up to me where I had been holding vigil, standing there the last three days without food or sleep or toilet, waiting…
…And worth the wait it was. I ran inside with my package and tore it open. Pulling it out of the package was akin to just earlier with the sun breaking through the clouds. The hot shoe cover and I looked at each other …we kissed. We embraced. We made love. We became one.
It was time. I slid that hot shoe cover into my camera hot shoe and it was as if I was witness to the Immaculate Conception itself. I blacked out.
I don’t know what happened but when I came to I was somewhere else, a stranger in a strange land, camera in hand, with the battery power burned down to the red. What had happened I don’t know. I heard a whisper. There was no one around me, no other noise, not traffic, nothing. It was so quiet the sound of butterfly wings flapping would have been like a passing bus. I was alone. But there was that whisper again, as gentle as before but this time I could make out the word – ”Look”. The whisper, it came from the hot shoe cover. “Look”.
I pressed the photo playback button and brought the view finder up to my eye, the hot shoe cover kissing my forehead as I did. I looked at the first photo on display and I saw perfection. I scrolled to the next and saw the sublime. In the next I saw heaven. I saw paradise, gods and goddesses.
It was this Smallrig hot shoe. It took me on a journey and as I looked back through the picture the memories of those moments came back to me. I even took a selfie with God and Allah (that’s me, on the left).
No, not all hot shoe covers are the same. Do yourself a favour and get this hot shoe cover from Smallrig. Your camera, your photos, your life will be …better.
