Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI got this unboxed and was excited to start working on the Pi5. Assembling the Pi board into the case was mostly straightforward, but when I got to installing the active cooler fan cable, found that the port was blocked. Not mentioned in the assembly instructions is the fact that you have to remove a small cover from the fan connector port on the board, nor how to remove it. So, I did what any guy would do and went after it with a screwdriver, which worked. With the cover removed,I could install the fan. For some reason, they also include 6 screws, even though you only need 4. Maybe its just so that you don’t lose them, since they are so small? Anyway, popped in my 64GB MicroSD card (not included), hooked it up to a USB-C power supply with at least 5V/5A (cable not included, power supply not included) and went to connect up my monitor. That’s when I found that the Pi5 uses a Micro HMDI cable (not included), not a standard or Mini like my other devices or the older Pis. Checking through my stash, I have none of these cables or adapters, so it’s back to the web to order one, and now I’m waiting for this to come in so I can start playing. Will update with more after I get it running and check on performance.

If you are looking for a Pi 5 for a retro gaming emulator running Batocera or PieHole, get the 8GB version instead. This 4GB version is perfect for less-intensive needs like the Ubiquiti Unifi Controller software for my network. I was previously using a Pi 3 running 32-bit but Unifi no longer runs on 32-bit setups so I decided to get this Pi 5 since it is 64 bit and I’ve never had any issue running the software on the Pis before. I like that this package comes with an ABS case and a fan with thermal pads to help keep things cool. Setup was a breeze thanks to the included directions with color photos. This is a great Pi 5 startup package!
