These controller thumb grips by Thumb Soldiers are easy to install. Just add the studs kit first, which clips around the analogue sticks and then add the knuckles kit to the studs kit, which just pushes in and twists on to lock in place. Once you’ve done this for each of the analogue stick controllers, the thumb grips are solid.
The top part of the knuckle kit Is actually a plastic type material, basically it’s tough and not soft. On looking at the product pictures it looked to me as if the knuckle kit would have been some kind of rubber or silicone. However, they do have a patterned texture to them which is really grippy and firm and my thumbs do not slip off the sticks.
I’m not sure I would say that these thumbs grips make me a better gamer 🙂 However, they do make a positive difference to my gameplay. I play mostly FPS, CoD etc. and using these Thumb Soldiers thumb grips have given me a bit more control of my movements and my aiming. I will definitely keep an eye out for other Small Soldiers products.
I must admit, I was initially unsure how much difference these would make. But after a few hours of gaming, I noticed my thumbs weren’t tiring as quickly, and my grip felt more secure, especially during intense moments. They’re not going to magically transform you into a pro gamer, but they do offer a subtle improvement in comfort and control.
The set consists of two adapters that increase the height, grip, and precision of your controller’s thumb sticks, allowing for more accurate directional control and longer, more comfortable gaming sessions.
The adapters are made from two separate parts. You install the lower part around the thumb stick head, and once attached, the new thumb stick pad is connected to it. The connection of the lower part of the adapter is a little tricky, as it is designed to fit snuggly around the original thumb stick pad and requires a bit of force to close and latch together. The new thumb stick pad twists on top of this and is much easier to install.
I found that the adapters took a little getting used to, but they have definitely improved my directional accuracy, and I found them comfortable to use even after playing for a few hours.
I am very happy with these simple little gaming gadgets and look forward to confusing my online opponents when they notice the marked increase in my gaming performance.

There’s 2 boxes in the pack: one is the studs and the other, the a knuckles. These work by the knuckles clipping around the thumbsticks and then the studs fitting securely on the top of the knuckles. They ensure the thumb is held in position during gameplay and give the thumbstick the ability to be used as an accurate directional pad.
The knuckles hinge open in the middle to place around the base of the thumbstick and the snap closed, (but be careful because one of mine came apart at the hinge a couple of times when I opened it, but could be put back together).
The studs slot into the top of the knuckles and then twist into place to secure, but the instructions mention about using a circular loop-type object to align the knuckles which weren’t included? I think I’ve attached them properly anyway, but time will tell.
The sets are nicely presented in black boxes each with the velvet drawstring bags inside containing the studs and knuckles, but I am unsure if these will remain in place after what happened with the hinge and they’re also made from extremely hard plastic, so I’m wondering whether they might rub your fingers after a while. Again, only time will tell, but for the time being they remain in place and help when playing.
When I read about the accessories for these I was very excited. There are a range of attachments you can add. They twist and click in to the bases. Here you get the grips attachment.
They come nicely boxed and in little velvet bags. The instructions are crystal clear and they’re very easy to take on and off. They didn’t damage my controller and fit both my Elite controller and my regular one with no issues. They stay on and do envelope your thumb more than the regular thumb sticks. I also really like the fact that they are designed and manufactured in the UK. Well done team.
Downsides are the pads are made of fairly brittle plastic that is textured but I’d have preferred a rubbery finish. They’re also quite expensive.
I think as a modular system this is very exciting. I think as a package on its own, it’s a little expensive. But they have manufactured them in the UK so that deserves credit. These work, however, and if you’re having problems losing grip while battling online these will do the job. And you always have the option to add the extra modules another day. Nearly brilliant.
These thumbstick covers definitely assist with both grip and precision whilst protecting the sticks on my xbox controller.
They’re a tight fit so it took a bit of fiddling and strength to get them attached. There was a point where I wondered if they would actually fit, but perseverance paid off and they’re now firmly attached. The instructions provided are clear, and the pictures help for sure. The covers come in two parts which was initially a bit confusing but the instructions cleared that up. It feels a little wasteful though, to have two separate packaging, when I’m pretty sure both parts would fit in one box/velvet bag.
Overall I think these fulfill their purpose very well. On a subjective level I’m afraid they’re not for me as they make my thumbs hurt (26 years of using a standard controller, and sensory peculiarities) so I can only give them 4* That being said my nephew absolutely loves them so they’ll definitely get plenty of use when he’s using my spare controller.
