as my tv does not have a socket for a DVD player to plug a normal DVD player so i have to use a portable DVD player to watch on my laptop.
This is a nice practical easy to use DVD/CD player. Note this unit will not play Blu-ray discs. The player has a lot of things going for it:
* It has the lead clipped into the bottom with both USB-C and USB-A connectors, so no need to carry around additional leads.
* Its powered through the one data lead, no need to plug in an additional power source, although obviously this will have more of a drain on a laptops battery, if not connected to the mains
* Its small and although plastic in construction feels strong, so is easy to carry, maybe in a laptop bag.
* In a time when we have seen external optical drives removed from laptops it provides the ideal method for getting back that functionality allowing you to play DVDs and CDs.
* The player has a colour changing LED strip running all the way round the unit, although not necessary it does add a level of class.
* You can also use it to burn data to a CD/DVD if required
The Unit works well, I connected it to my Windows 11 Laptop and it worked great, although be aware you need to have software on your device (Laptop/PC /etc.) to play and burn discs. There are free players readily available, I used “Any DVD” to play a DVD and now that software is on my Laptop I can play DVDs whenever I want.
Ordered this as I still have a ton of CDs and DVDs and wanted to sue them. This plugged into my Apple Mac and the discs came up working straight away without any issues. No power needed, it drew it from the computer, quality was good. Recommended.
I actually don’t remember the last time I needed to use a CD/DVD with my computer, however being of a particular age, I feel a great sense of comfort just knowing that I have one that I can use, should I need to.
I do have a few CDs, but I backed them all up to mp3s a long time ago, and I have a few DVDs – but I rarely even watch those now, since I have mostly blu-rays or stream movies.
However, the comfort of having a CD drive, and the knowledge that I can burn some MP3 discs for my car, gives me a little warm feeling inside.
The drive itself seems very good. It has a built in cable, which tucks nicely underneath (so there’ll be no hunting of the cable when I need to use it), it has LED lights, which I thought was a very random thing to have, but it looks cool. There’s a button on the back that lets you cycle through the colours or turn it off. There’s also a mini USB plug, with a cable in the box, which you can use if your device doesn’t provide enough power via USB – however, my Mac mini worked perfectly fine from both the USB A and USB C on the attached cable, so no need for the extra power.
The CDs and DVDs I played all worked fine, and I put a good selection of albums onto an MP3 disc for the car (I doubt I’ll use it much, but it’s there if I want to chill to my own tunes) – the disc wrote first time, with no errors and played great in the car. Surprised, as the discs are quite old and I wasn’t expecting them to still be okay.
All in all, a fantastic addition which I am very happy to have.
Very handy to have and works well

Just what I was after!
I’ve got 3 laptops, and none have a dvd drive, so I wanted something that wasn’t too expensive but that was there if I ever needed it.
This is perfect, as its just plug-in and play, no need to install drivers or other software.
Like many people of a slightly older generation, I have boxes of CDs and DVDs,and discs with photos on etc in the attic that were gathering dust and becoming obsolete, at least now I can actually use them if I wanted to.
The design is good, it’s lightweight and compact, with the cable neatly stored underneath.
Works seamlessly, with minimal noise, data transfer speeds are fast, and it reads and writes discs quickly with no issues.
My only query is on the RGB itself. The listing states it has several modes and colours, but I didn’t actually find these and am surprised its listed as having them!
But overall a solid 5 stars, I definitely think this is worth the money. Great build and great performance.
This external drive from Umaniy works very well in my opinion. I was able to perform tests by reading a CDR, and play a DVD movie without problem while I had the device plugged into my PC’s USB-C port.
The RGB LED confused me at first as I did not know how to control it, but it turns out there is a little button on the back of the unit that allows you to cycle through colour modes or turn it off.
Also on the back is another confusing addition – possibly a genius one – a Micro USB port. I cannot remember the last time I saw a Micro USB port – its lucky they provided a cable. This is apparently for power, a good idea if your PC cant provide enough power via its USB ports for stable operation. The manual recommends that you can run the drive off a power bank, which is a novel solution. I approve of the addition of this extra port as about 6 months ago, I tried to review a drive that suffered this exact problem, but it didn’t have a solution to provide extra power.
In summary, a nice easy to use plug and play drive, with a bit of bling and with thought put into power delivery issues.
External CD DVD Drive (B0D84388KP)
Works very well, plug and play, instantly recognised and installed.
On my Windows 11 machine, this DVD drive was instantly recognised and ready for use within seconds. The plug and play means there was no delay during installation.
The moment it is plugged in and powered, it advertises its presence with a series of colours around the outside which look very good, not too bright or garish.
Connectivity is via either the USB-A or USB-C twin ended cable which is retained within a groove under the drive. The USB-micro slot at the back is simply for additional power if required but most recent devices usually have sufficient power.
The sleek low level design suits my computer system and looks great in place at the side.
I had no problems at all using this drive and it only took a few minutes on the internet browsing for a suitable burner programme that works with CD and DVD and for creating audio cd’s, etc.
My primary use will be for creating CD and DVD discs. If you’re going to be using it for playback on external devices, make sure yours is supported in the list.
