This caught my eye because it mentioned emergency escape rope. Our main bedroom is down a long hallway far away from the stairs and it has always been a concern what we would do in a fire. When we moved in we noticed some hooks in the floor by the main window that look perfectly placed for an escape ladder so perhaps the previous owners had the same concerns.
This rope popped up and looked perfect for the job. It comes nicely packaged in it’s own bag, with rucksack style double drawstring and is neatly wound for stowing.
The rope comes with some very strong looking locking carabiners – I am not a climbing expert so I have included the markings that give the ratings and CE marking in the photos but they definitely look more than strong enough to take body weight – I would not hesitate to use them. Same for the rope, it is a nice quality and very strong. The end loops are stitched (again photo included) and feel secure. As I am only planning on using this in an emergency and likely for a one off (hopefully never!) use, I would not hesitate to put my faith in the rope and attachments.
Overall I am very pleased with it and hope to never have to use it for the purpose I got it for!
I’m not a climber so I’ll only be using this as a utility rope. A rope to help lashing thinks up on the campsite, when felling larger trees in the garden and for additional support when working at heights outside the house. It is much better and more compact than the dodgy old pieces of rope I was using before. Getting this rope was a good safety move from that respect. My old ropes of unknown strength have gone in the bin in favor of this one. Having its own bag will keep the dust off it and also means it is a smaller size to store.
This is a 10mm diametre kernmantle rope that is 30 metres long. Swaged at each end are steel locking carabiners, which could be a very useful feature for some people.
As a climber this rope is heavy because of the steel carabiners, though: I use aluminum, and prefer not to have them permanently attached to the rope. I can see it being useful, however, as a rescue rope or perhaps a safety rope when sailing for mast ascending, when weight would not be an issue.
The rope comes in a light bag for storage, a nice touch.
This is a difficult one to assess. You get a strong (climbing) rope with
two very strong carabiners. The rope is 10mm and a strong outer and
softer centre. I’ve climbed and used ropes for many years and this one is different.
The carabiners are thru eyes at the ends and very well
done. As an emergency rope from a house or factory etc ideal,
Where I have reservations is as climbing equipment. The carabiniers are extremely strong,
Also very heavy compared to modern climbers equipment. The rope is very
heavy and not so supple for climbing. Comes in its own bag. As an all round rope
for emergency use it is excellent.
I ordered this kernmantle rope for utility use, and it’s fit for purpose. The hand is quite stiff but it takes a knot just fine. And at 25.99 at the time of writing, the price seems reasonable. More than that, there’s not a lot to say.
But as other reviewers are pointing out, the vendor’s claim that this is suitable for climbing is wildly irresponsible, and I’ve docked a star for that. They offer some kind of vague no-name Chinese certification but I most certainly wouldn’t trust it with my life.
Genuine climbing ropes are a highly technical product – both the core and the sheath have to meet a number of demanding standards. You should absolutely pay the extra to buy a properly certified rope from a reputable brand. The same goes for carabiners. Please don’t cut corners and try to get by with an uncertified rope like this…
This heavyweight braided rope arrived neatly wound and packed in a thin waterproof bag with drawstrings. The rope itself is sturdy and well-made with each end folded, stitched and tightly wrapped in heat-shrink plastic.
Large steel carabiners with screw thread tighteners are permanently attached to each end of the rope. These are stamped with the CE logo, which stands for Conformity Europeenne and is the European safety conformity standard for all goods sold in Europe. To meet CE requirements a product must comply with EN technical and/or safety standards. Due to the placement of the logo, it is not clear if this applies to just the carabiner part, or both the rope and carabiner. There is no mention of additional UIAA or EN certification on either the rope or the packaging.
This seems to be an excellent general-use rope representing good value for money. Personally, I’m not sure I would use it for climbing due to a lack of clarification regarding its certification.
Would you use it for rock climbing? Answer from my son who is a sport rock climber was a definite No. no accreditation or testing and a totally unknown brand.
So, is it still good as a utility product? Yes. The rope appears well made and well finished, with the caveat that I can’t see the rope internal construction. But I’ll base my views on the finished loops and the supplied carabiner. Both of which are moderately good quality and seem up to the claimed 1000kg rating. So yes, I’d use this to secure the boat or tie down the bikes, even a bit of light towing. My use will be as an escape rope from our 2 storey home, for which it is a perfect solution.
