• What are seed balls and why are they a better option to scattering loose seed?

  Seed balls are marble sized balls made from UK wildflower seeds, peat-free compost and chilli powder. By being encased within the ball, the seeds are better protected from being eaten by seed predators such as birds and insects.

• How do I plant seed balls?

  No need to dig and easy to use! Simply scatter onto bare soil or compost on a garden bed or pot, leaving at least 10cm between each ball. A sunny spot is best. Avoid scattering on grass or burying them.

• How do they work? Part 1

  With rain, sun and warmth, the seeds inside the ball will start to germinate and little sprouts will begin to appear. This process can take 4-6 weeks from scattering as the clay needs to be soft before the seeds can start to grow.

• How do they work? Part 2

  Regular watering can help speed up the initial germination process. We also add chilli powder to our Seedball recipe to help deter slugs and snails from eating the young shoots. They are best scattered in Spring & Autumn.

• How do they work? Part 3

  Wildflowers are slow growers compared to many plants commonly found in gardens. You will see some initial growth and perhaps a few flowers, but a full display typically won’t appear until the following spring and summer.
