How to Plant Charlotte Seed Potatoes
- Choose the Planting Time
- Plant your Charlotte seed potatoes between January and May for optimal growth. They will be ready for harvest from April to August.
- Prepare the Soil
- Select a well-drained, moist soil with good fertility. Charlotte potatoes grow in most soil types (acidic, alkaline, sandy, clay, or fertile soils), but ensure it is free of frost pockets and has plenty of sunlight.
- Prepare the Seed Potatoes
- Allow the seed potatoes to “chit” (sprout) for about 2-4 weeks before planting. Place them in a cool, light area to encourage sprouting.
- Planting Depth and Spacing
- Dig planting holes or trenches about 10 cm deep. Space the potatoes 30 cm apart to allow adequate room for growth.
- Planting Process
- Place each seed potato with the sprouted (chitted) end facing upward. Cover with soil and gently firm the ground.
- Watering and Maintenance
- Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Ensure proper drainage and avoid over-watering.
- Hilling
- As the plants grow, mound soil around the stems to protect the developing tubers and promote better yields.
- Harvesting
- Harvest Charlotte potatoes between April and August, depending on the planting date and weather conditions.
