Product works great like it should from akai but the only problem I have is with the seller. The product looks used which isnt a huge deal but it wasn’t advertised as used so I’m a little bummed out but it work great so …
KOALA SAMPLER friendly. Worked just fine. Mapping in app was great. Just couldn’t map the tap tempo. Haven’t tried it on pc yet. So far so good. Does what i wanted it to do. Map all 64 pads and effects knobs and sliders.
This is a nice little drum pad for beginners or those who only need a cheap pad for some basic studio drum work.
As others have stated, its main drawback is the tendency for “double hits” and some slight sensitivity issues. This really isn’t much of an issue if you’re only using it for casual work.
If you’re really into drum work, it might be worth getting a slightly more accurate pad as the “double hit” issue might frustrate you.
I mainly got this pad for the light work I do with drums, so it really does the job well for my needs.
The build quality seems sturdy enough, it’s a good size and weight, and has enough features for the price.
Works like a charm. I use it for triggering my samples in Rekordbox and it works perfectly.
Great addition to my home studio nice and easy to use
Brilliant and budget friendly for people who want to get into beatmaking using a pad controller or machine once you get to grips with this you can then spend more money on a machine instead of controller AKAI are best for pads on the market 100%
If yo have a music application/program like Propellerhead Reasons or Garage Band, it should work instantly after you find and connect it to the Program. No software needed to use it on a interface
I really did like it but I hate that I had to send it back I wish I can get it again but I don’t have the money right now but I enjoyed it I liked it it’s enjoyable
The only issue is the box cake ripped as of someone tried to take something from inside. Besides that everything else is good
One of the pads does not work. I am returning it.
A good bit of kit for a fair price.
I have used it with logic pro and it connects straight away. This is my first sequencer so cannot compare to others but i trusted the brand and they have not let me down
At times there is a lag, however i restart the mac and it has gone so more than likely a computer issue.
I havent used it with any other DAWS but i imagine it would be the same case of plug it in and its good to go. ( did not need to install any software)
The keys are sensitive enough and the unit feels sturdy.
I did not read the instructions and got to grips with it within seconds, however i recommend reading as theres a fair bit this hardware can do if you take the time to actually learn i
It heard to download the software for it an its heard to figure out have to go to akaipro218 to download software will not work for hp must use MAK COMPUTER
Mine came open, and not in a box, no tape seal just packaging labels. but the product is great and worked out the box for my phone and tablet.
Drum pad plays sound but I still here my piano midi behind drum instrument very frustrating
Ok I’ve been using Native Instruments MK3 mikro for 2 years, and it’s a good pad. But Akai kept getting my attention with the MPC Beats, and they were so smart to not only make it free, but you can bring any controller you have, and it will work with it.
But, I wanted to let them know how much I really appreciate them so I bought the MPD226.
I had no idea that these thick fat pads would change my life and my love!!
24 hours later, I have a song already!!
Yeah, when you find the right gear, it will inspire your creative juices. Yes, I have my transport control figured out, and I’m just in awe!!
I’m glad it’s the weekend, because I need to spend more time with my new love.
Thank you Akai for your infinite wisdom!
You have my undivided attention.
I wanted to start learning to make music, and was immediately presented with a stumbling block: drum programming sux (unless you’re already familiar enough you xan work past it). This meant that I could not design a beat as I had already forgotten it before I could get anywhere near what I had imagined. So the logical progression is that with a finger drum pad, I could tap out what’s in my head instead of failing to design the pattern.
But, I use Linux and am extremely stubborn about this. And whilst evidence exists, information is hard to find about the MPD218 and Linux.
I hereby confirm that the MPD218 works in Linux with the Hydrogen drum synthesiser. That said not all functions of the pad seem to be supported, but all of the important ones are.
– Cycling between the three banks of pads works without configuration
– Mapping and cycling through the three banks of control knobs works in the MIDI learn function (I have all three banks of six knobs set to adjust the gain of each instrument in the mixer)
– Velocity sensitivity works automatically
– “FULL LEVEL” button turns off velocity sensitivity (no configuration needed)
– Note Repeat and “NR CONFIG” work without configuration
What doesn’t work:
– PROG SELECT does things, not useful things and I haven’t been able to configure Hydrogen otherwise
– SWING settings do nothing that I’ve been able to figure out
And lastly: Hydrogen doesn’t record MIDI events so output will either need to be recorded as a sample in another utility or an external MIDI recording sequencer can be used to record the events and subsequently trigger Hydrogen as a soft-synth on playback (I have tested this with seq24).
The unit itself is Plug ‘n’ Play and class compliant within Linux: it will appear as a properly labelled ALSA MIDI device, but JACKD will also assign a generic “capture_N” identifier in QJackCtl’s MIDI tab: watch the messages in QJackCtl to be sure which capture device represents the MPD218. Alternatively, a2jmidid utility can be used to reroute ALSA MIDI through JACK MIDI, but I have found this to not be 100% predictable.
Finally, a product review: the unit itself is sturdy and weighty. It feels very solid which was a surprise. The pads are comfortable, silicone material which light up when tapped. The pads are prone to double triggering, which many other people have found but a change in playing style resolves this (don’t let your fingers rest on the pad but rather recoil immediately; think pistol-shrimp). The control knobs, too feel very solid with a lot of resistance to prevent accidental adjustment. The 6 function buttons are the only parts of this device that don’t feel high quality, but they do feel sturdy enough to not warrant concern.
I am 101% happy with this product; the extra 1% because I wasn’t expecting it to work quite as well with Linux/Hydrogen as it does; I was prepared for a 90% at best. So very happy me. It’s also worth noting I’ve only had it a couple of days, so I might be tempting fate … we’ll see.
I purchased this to create beats myself for my music. Just got in this morning only took 3 days and works amazing the sound quality and touch sensitivity is on point really happy with this product.
perfect for beginners with a low budget to start with but for a very short period of time. as for the pads, I do not recommend them for professional recording for their pad insensitivity and double hitting. as for the price, i think its more than fair.
Good product. Had a few scuff marks around the frontside of the product that are barely noticeable. Product works fine.
Got this for my boyfriend and he never gets off the item work amazing for his work
For the amount of money its well worth buying it, if you love creating beats with your own fingers!
The pads are sensitive to how hard you press them.
Works well for FLstudio fpc.
So bad that it doesn’t come with some drum kits for rap.
ok not the best pads, not super-responsive. And if the case screws are too tight you get double hits. But it’s easy to work around and adjust your playing. However… the fact that i can power it up from an iphone, means that i can practice my chops on the go with only one wire.. It’s a good value pad. For the price only the atom is close.Recommended.
Good bundled software.
Pads aren’t the most sensitive, not great for long sessions. Can’t sync tempo with live for note repeat, but can change tempo manually on machine. Just means that the notes are usually out by a little bit and need a little tweaking.
Might not be for absolute beginners as to get it to work properly with live’s drum rack, you have to get really comfortable with the editor. Heads up, autopopulate’s a life saver.
Overall a decent bit of kit, faders and CC knobs feel good, lots of customisation options, and once you get comfortable with the software and how to use it, it actually really streamlined my workflow.
The mpd218 i received works fine, apparently some of these are unusable with bad pad responses and mixed sensitivities. This one feels as though you have to hit pad harder than you should need to when trying to hit softly but you have to get used to it as it is because it not adjustable, but it is quite usable when you strike it a certain way , and great overall package for the price. The sonnivox software will not install on my d drive on custom install after instructing it to, it starts installing into c drive which has no space, so i shall try it on my next laptop. sonnivox also forces you to install ilok software which sucks.I already have it installed but ilok sucks, unnecessary garbage, but overall the mpd218 with all the software is excellent value for low price
Great piece of kit. Good value for money and easily portable for gigs.
I am a dj/record producer i used the akai MPD218 for music production and remix, this machine is amazing no problem.
Fast delivery, perfect quality, does exactly what I need it to!
Its a good product but sometimes when trying to play some stuff it may hit 2 keys at once. Its very easy to use, simple plug and play, and also has easy config. only thing i really had to look up is getting it in time with Ableton live 10
Product was good. Pads have no feedback which is a down side. The software also wasn’t exactly feature-rich but it’s fairly easy to use. Great for beginners and I couldn’t recommend it enough for someone wanting to start messing around with music producing or just generally having fun. Can use it as a soundboard aswell which is cool.
Really easy to setup, Ableton recognises it immediately and it maps to the default notes for the standard Ableton drum kits. The pads feel good, robust, but very playable. I had no problem with the sensitivity or double hits, I think the sensitivity is just right for me. The aftertouch is great, esp when used with the note repeat function. It makes hihat and snare roll parts really easy and expressive.
Make sure you set Sync to external on the device and Sync on the pad MIDI settings in Abletons preferences to get the note repeat synced to Live.
The additional software that comes with it is good and worth
downloading. Paid 69 for it and feels like a bargain for that price.
Looks professional, but I found it difficult to use (not as young as I was) as there are too many variables to be able to find help in setting up what I wanted. I’m sure it’s very useful and one day I will get to grips with it but for now it sits looking technical on a shelf.
I use this for my DJ lighting software and tends to have false triggering on a couple pads. I’ve looked it up and there are a couple DIY fixes out there but it involves taking it apart. Other than that it works great.
Synced no problem and works brilliantly with Reason 10.
Nice, thick pads which I find very responsive.
Editor is well laid out and very easy to use.
Rock solid build quality.
A word of advice….make sure that you are using this on a flat surface otherwise the pads can be erratic.
Oh, and the pads are fingerprint magnets!!!
Great unit, solid build and very good price.
I’ve been using this product for the past couple months and I’ve been loving it. I use it almost every single day for producing music, and it is a workhorse. I’ve used it for music production, finger drumming, and even live performances at my church. The 360 dials work great and give me a more tactile experience when automating filter sweeps and other effects. There is one caveat. The pad sensitivity is an issue that several other people have had, and I’ve dealt with it as well. Often times, the pads will register one “hit” as two. So when using on full velocity mode, there may be flams as you play. This bodes several issues. In finger drumming, when triggering samples, a double stroke can mess up the flow of the performance and create issues. When recording MIDI input, a double stroke means I have to search through the session to find the extra hit before I can quantize. In addition to double strokes when playing, sometimes other pads will actuate when not pressed. I may hit pad 1, and pad 9 may trigger as well. It also causes problems with finger drumming, as triggering a sample in the middle of the drum pattern ruins the flow of the session. If this was remedied, it would be a flawless product. Despite whatever issues I’ve had, I must say that I am in total love with this product! It’s portable, fun, and an efficient tool to get drum ideas into my Logic session! So much fun! Just wish the pad issues weren’t there…
It was fairly easy to set up although not all the downloadable software worked or was still available, namely the ableton live 9.
Still learning but quality seems good, everything works. If using Ableton, use “program 4”.
I really like it…it made my hard work so easy to apply on all my projects
I have had many hardware products from Akai from the MPC 1000, 2000XL, and I have to say that this is built as well, and functions just as well as the previous machines. This is just a MIDI controller. It comes with software and I haven’t downloaded it all, but MPC Essentials is good and works as a standalone MPC on you computer. The MPD controls it and interacts with it perfectly.
Love it and it works pretty well with studio one 4 even though its more for Ableton. The pads feel so soft so I love the quality. Although the pad require quite some force to trigger but I’ve got used to it.
I like it so far, but sometimes a little unresponsive when hitting more than one, and especially with full level on.
Picked this up as my Maschine mk3 doesnt work very well in MIDI mode – love the pads on the Akai – I am quite tempted to buy the Akai Live on the basis that the pads are so good even in this entry level unit. Lots of options for customising and the Midi control centre app opens up lots more possibilities
Guys seriously, this is the absolute best controller you will find for under $100. Pads are high quality, heavy duty, and the controller plugs and plays perfectly. If you find yourself “double-triggering”, it means you’re hitting the pads too hard. All you need to do is unscrew the back panel and loosen the screws connected to the pads. Every instrument requires some measure of tuning to your playing style, don’t blame the manufacturer because it doesn’t fit yours perfectly out of the box.
Amazing piece of equipment for any music producers studio. Easy to use and very responsive allows you to create some clean drum patterns and samples.
I did a lot of research before buying this and what I was most apprehensive about was the sensitivity of the pads as people had talked about double hits being recorded or responsiveness not quick enough. I have noticed double hits but it really depends on how you ‘play’ it. If I hit the pads correctly, this isn’t a problem for me. The responsiveness I have had no problem with either. For the price, I am very pleased with it and would buy it again.
It’s a shame so many have had bad experiences with this, judging from the reviews.
Right out of the box, it synced up to my preferred DAW (Mixcraft 8) with no manual mapping required. I inserted an instrument track, picked a drum kit and I was recording a beat in seconds, (and that was before I’d even installed any of the Akai software). From there I can manually map clips to the pads, and different parameters to the dials etc.
The pads are reasonably responsive. Light touches don’t register so well, so they do need a fairly firm contact, but once you make the right contact, they are very responsive to fills and rolls. It just takes a bit of getting used to.
I have an Akai keyboard controller, and it feels very flimsy, like a toy. I was sort of expecting very light build quality from this too considering the price, but it’s solid. The dials feel very good, and all of the pads are very robust.
The software bundle that comes with this is crazy too. I already have Ableton but for those who don’t, the Ableton Live Lite is a great package. The MPC Essentials and Big Bang Drums are great pieces of kit, and Reason Lite is also a great DAW. So all in you get two high quality DAWs, and a whole host of sounds to use (both within Ableton Lite, Reason Lite and the Big Bang Drums system), plus the unit itself, all for 70. You won’t get better value than that.
If you’re looking for a starter kit to get working with pads, this is literally everything you need (besides a computer, obviously) at a great price. And if you get one, buy brand new, so you can register the device and be eligible for the software bundle. It’s a decent device on its own, but to get all that software included in the price, it’s a steal! If it’s 2nd hand, someone else will have registered the serial number and you won’t be able to get all the kit that comes with it.
Got it when it was on sale and I’m in love
5 stars for the price. 4 stars for the overall performance. It works well, is durable, but it’s missing some of the basic controls that I found necessary for my level of production. The largest complaint that I have with this device is the frustrating-to-use note repeat feature. I think that feature could have been executed much better without affecting the manufacturing price.
fun toy to play with. it comes with ableton live and is easy to set up
The final part for my budget home studio.Well made and intuitive.
Amazing as a first drum machine, excellent price – Only comes with ableton live 9 LITE (limited version) but still grea
I can’t recommend this product enough! Buy it now…
This is so much fun to play. Coming from a piano background, I found the pads on this particular unit to be so responsive and playable that the MPD218 transcends the distance from simple MIDI pad controller to an actual “musical instrument.” The installation and setup was a breeze and in no time, I was finger drumming my way to all my favorite tunes.
Comes with some great software, the large type of USB plug which is nice, some great thick pads and looks great on the desktop. Have a look at some YouTube videos if you’re still not convinced. I’m seriously thinking of buying a second one as a back up.
just got it to mess around with and love it easy to set up and use comes with some free software noting special I like using FL studio my self has no problem connecting
It arrived yesterday, and setting it up was extremely simple. Just plug it in, and it’s on. No hassle or ridiculous, messy cords to deal with.
I started playing around in Acoustica Mixcraft, just to get a feel for this pad. It got along with Acoustica quite nicely. I did some very basic beats in that program as well, which was a lot of fun.
Setting up MPC Essentials was a bit of a pain for some reason. Not exactly sure why, because I rarely struggle with installing software. Ableton Live was much easier to setup, and is a blast to use with this pad. It’s amazing how easily this pad gets along perfectly with two very different kinds of software.
One thing I will say is that there’s a learning curve with how hard you have to hit the pads. This is my first pad, so it could just be me, but I’ve got pretty strong hands from a life of painting and sculpting, so it surprised me how hard I had to hit the pads. It does annoy me a little that I can hear a loud thunk noise each time I hit a pad, in addition to the beats I’m making. Throws me off a little, and it can be distracting. Maybe I’ll get used to it over time. I wouldn’t say this makes this MPC bad, it’s just something I noticed.
just got this, and wish i’d done it sooner. it’s great for drum parts (and basslines, and triggering samples). have only used the knobs a little so far (and only 1-at-a time). but great to have them. a no-frills device, but it’s all i needed.
the pads feel great; they do like dust though, a minor nuisance. i wanted a sleeve for it, and found a site called mpcstuff with a case, and parts as well.
am having fun with the 218 (AND getting work done). so, a great investment (and better than banging out drums on the keyboard).
Livraison niquel
Great so far… Makes making beats that little bit more fun!
Nice bit of kit but wish they gave you a case for it (or sold one). I have had this a week and no problems. The software is top notch no need for any other daw . This is a great starting point for someone needing a midi pad and great software . Few improvements could be made ( like how to link and map quickly in ableton live lite) with a quick reference book/ sheet .brilliant and would love to use or test other kits just to see how they compare 10 out of 10 from me
So… this is a update on my purchase. Now I have had time to play around with this a bit more I can now fully say with out any doubts this is a brilliant piece of equipment. I have been using this to mix , run samples and use it as a drum kit too in addition to this I bought the akai 25 key midi keyboard too and found that the software can be used on the akai 26 and mpd218 . I would love to try out more of there line as I was amazed at the quality and software you get with each item you buy. Anyone wishing to get a jumpstart to there music then look no further than here.
Again I would love to test and own other midi devices that akai produce
would have been better if it had feedback so i could control the leds
I was concerned that I’d be getting BigBang 1.0, which is dated and might not work with the latest operating systems. After registering my MPD 218 I was excited to see that I was getting Cinematic 2.5 and Drum 2.3 for BigBang WITH three legacy packs. If you like any of the current MPC sound packs you might listen to the UK Dance and not hear any relevant sounds…but I still like the sound of MPC Dystopia.
The downloads are several GB, and you’ll need to scan for new VSTs/AUs before using. I plugged this to Retronym’s Wej and it worked immediately with my iPad Pro via Bluetooth. But again…I almost bought it for the software downloads alone. At the time SONiVOX BigBang are selling for 70 USD each; Legacy MPC packs 50 USD; a few others as well I didn’t price compare.
I’m not a Kontakt user so these orchestra sound packs are kind of rare for me.
Bref , j’adore cet “instrument”!
Super responsive pads with a nice bounce to them, worked plug & plug with both my Macbook and my desktop running Windows. Pad colours are fully changeable along with some other settings to a large number of presets, great for beat making, performances, or just messing around. I’d consider it a great drum pad for both those that are new and experienced.
Pad quality easily beats Ableton units, comparable to Maschine systems with a little less functionality.
Fantastic feel and response. Works well with the included Ableton Live Lite package.
Excellent. Haven’t experienced any of the problems mentioned in other review, a great piece of ki
love this…. looking forward to use it at my live shows
Connected straight away into Cubase 8 Artist, the pads I found have a really good response and velocity sensitivity. I found it very user friendly, fun and a pleasure to use. The software is easy to download and use, you have to open a free account with Akai to do so. ON the Akai website you can also download a free editor which allows you to change and assign the pads so very easily. It’s built well, and is way way better than any pads I have used or touched that are built into the end of a midi keyboard. This is dedicated and designed for one purpose and it does the job very well. As a Pro recording artists and studio I have little patience for any software or hardware that does not work or is unfriendly to operate. This is instant, fast, easy, reliable so that you can dive in and get on with things.
I spent some considerable time researching MPC and MPD alternatives for use with Studio One primarily.
Eventually I settled for the cheaper option having recognised that I don’t need transport functions or a display, essentially all I needed was a set of 16 pads.
Upon opening it I was massively surprised at how well made it feels, it has a bit of weight to it, the pads are really nice and the nobs, although I’ve not assigned them to anything yet, feel nice too.
The software that it comes with seems OK but for me it is such a distraction to a workflow that I already have, I may just dismiss it but it does look quite interesting, just feels a bit slow although that could be familiarity.
I’ve got it installed as a standalone and as a VST, I shall check it out maybe when I’m more curious and less keen to just get stuck into using the controller.
Overall, great quality especially at the price, it does exactly as I need it to I’m happy with it.
Now….how about that MPC studio…???….hmmmm.
My son is happy with it and learning how to use i
These pads are well suited for drum programming, which is my primary use for it at the moment. Most VSTi software has a MIDI learn feature which makes mapping the pads to desired notes very intuitive so I haven’t had to use the pad configuration software yet, though I did find the config software to be rather unintuitive.
By far the most useful feature is the pad banks, which allows up to 3 different 16 note configurations, but haven’t had the need for it yet, but it’s a good feature to have.
I really like this product and its the perfect starter MPD but the pads could be a bit softer to press also it doesn’t really like Logic pro x when you try and use samples on the pad. But overall good produc
is there a guide how to run the software for newbies? … I used it only a couple of times just uploading drum rack and now stuck how to go on and doing smth more . I am a looser with ableton software.
This is my first akai product and i bought it as a cheap mpc to use with fl studio. The set up to link as a midi controller is easy however to get it to replicate the style of an mpc was difficult and took alot of searching on youtube to find it.
To summarise i wanted two things when using the mpd for sampling. 1. For the sample to play all the way through when hitting the pad (as oposed to having to hold the pad until the clip finished. 2. For the samples to cut off when another pad is hit. Thankfully i managed to find a tutorial which explained it but just a heads up, i searched ‘using a midi controller in slicex’. This explained how to sustain the playback and set up the cuts. If you search set up mpd for fl studio will are basically wasting your time. All in all, pads are decent, knobs work. Good first purchase for new starters like myself
+ves:
– portable
– easy to set up
– easy to trigger sounds
– pads / knobs feel good
– works with an iPad (with camera connection kit) although the pads don’t light up
– you can disable pads and so I had it set up on the floor and was able to tap it with my foot and trigger a kick drum sound.
-ves
– not much really. I sold mind because it turns out I’m not particularly great at finger drumming.

Prestazioni eccellenti
The MPD218 hardware has worked flawlessly. The pads are very responsive. The free drum software from Big Bang is another story. It is quite simply flakey and not in a good way. While the drum sounds are ok, the configuration of the drum software and the assignment to individual pads is awkard at best and just when you think you have the pads assigned, you discover that a couple pads have dropped their assignment and/or have been assigned to the wrong sound. Long story short, hardware very good, Akai software somewhat confusing, Big Bang Drum and Percussion software unacceptable.
for the price this is amazing. some mis-triggering does happen if you hit it with quite some force but nothing that’s overly annoying
Excellent Pad controller and gigabytes of free downloaded software available.
If your using FL studio, its a right headache to set up. The downloads are immeasurably huge.
But that all aside, the pads are excellent value for money. I use them for finger drumming and they are perfectly weighted and responsive. You really do get a good set of pads here.
I would recommend these as entry level pads for occasional use
Perfect touch and great feel. Quality materials. Has to be one of the best pad controllers ever built. Rubberised underneath stops it moving around when in use. Small and tough enough to carry around. I only use mine in my home studio set up. I spent hours doing research ion the internet Plugged into my Ableton Live and Pro Tools set up in seconds. Has to be one of the first things you buy when setting up a home studio
Was looking for a sample pad for a while, this has a great feel. Nice look. Easy to use. Get it ma
very good controller plug in and go wrks with every vst i have no problems 🙂
Great device, super recommend it if you are a beginner like myself!
Great pads that feels just right, I use it every single day.
