Good machine but it needs a hook on the handle to hang the coiled lead on when stored
Great item. But taken one star off because it doesn’t go right up to the edge of my lawn like a lawnmower does. Tried racking it without the box on like some people suggested because it fills up so quick but I had grass going everywhere and took a lot of time cleaning up. Otherwise good item
Very easy to put together…and I’m not the most patient at these things. Great for small gardens….it has 3 settings for the height of cutting. I set it on the middle on and it had the advantage of raking without scraping. The only downside is the basket collects very quickly so if you have a larger garden you are forever emptying it….you may decide to use it without the collection basket and rake it off afterwards.
have used and find it very good product. also has good height adjustment.
Amazed at how much rubbish this rake throws out. Lawn looks a bit of mess after initial “going over” but within three weeks it has recovered.
I ordered the lawn racer in great britain and wan’t to use it in germany. But the plug is not the correct one. So I cut it off and take a german (europe) plug on it. There are only two wires on the lawn racer. No earth wire. I’m a little bit wondered.
after the adjustment it works fine. Good is the basket in the front of the device.
If you are looking at purchasing this item its a must. I usually don’t write reviews but this definitely deserves one.
After spending years raking my lawn and giving myself blisters. This year I decided to invest in a lawn raker. I am not disappointed. After reading other reviews I thought I would give it a go.It arrived very quickly and was very easy to assemble. Being a women I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to put it together or get on with it. But It was fine. Very very easy to use light weight and does a fanatic job of the lawn. It has 3 levels which is great and small enough to store away in garage. would I recommend you buy this product. A definite 10/10 in my eyes. The price is very good to.
Looking forward to some rain and seeing how my lawn looks in a few weeks.
Makes the same noise as a much cheaper one that stopped working. Either the other one was a cheap knock off of this B & D machine, or this one is an expensive (with a more powerful motor) knock off of the cheaper one. Easy to use. Grass box needs emptying every 5 seconds. Noisy
Black & Decker should speak to me as l use it on my artificial lawn, its very good but needs one or two adjustments and l can tell them what to do, done properly it would be worth a fortune, ask Black & Decker to come back to me as everyone with an artificial lawn should have one.
A Williamson.
I found this really easy to use it did an excellent job.
When I think of all the time I spent each year taking moss out of the lawn I do wish I had been aware of the Black and Decker Lawn Raker. Not only would it have been so much quicker but does a far better job.
Well worth the investment.
Shame it took me until my 70th year to discover it. Highly recommended.
Works exceptionally and great value for money. I disassemble the machine and repack for next use. Takes about 5 minutes to put back together. Very pleased all round
Having had an “older style” lawn rake of the same manufacturing company I prejudged this model, how wrong I was. I have a fairly large lawn, 60 x 50 ft, and this machine removed 17 large black bags of moss and detritus with ease. It was worked continuously and never faltered once, Impressed? most definitely. It’s an easy to use machine, easily adjusted height/depth control, lightweight and virtually pulls its self along. A great little work horse from a great stable.
Nothing to dislike, worked well. Will have to wait to see how the lawn looks after such a heavy duty haircu
Been borrowing my dad’s ancient one for years with a broken box so using this was a breeze. Got soooo much moss etc out on lowest setting.
Easy to empty.
Grass looks a bit patchy – but I was expecting that. It seems to be recovering (10 days later) and the grass looks better already.
Bought this after trying to hand rake the back garden to rid it of moss. Easily assembled, (and dismantled) and what a difference it made. I knew I had plenty moss in the garden but within no time at all, this had filled up two very large backs of the stuff (more than I thought was there). Have only used it once, due to time and weather, but will be back out to finish off when/IF the sun ever shines again.
One down side, as previous reviewers have mentioned, the collection box is way too small and fills up in no time at all. Not sure how they would get round this problem as it is probably in proportion with the size of the machine, but definitely could be doing with a box twice the size of the current one.
Would DEFINITELY recommend though if you have a largish garden.
Guidance was clear on assembly. No special tools required. Instructions on how to operate clear, including tips on when to use and the selection of heights for the raker. Like the “hook” on the handle bar, used to hold up the cable away from the “machine” so you can readily have the cable falling behind you as walk with the raker on the grass.
Bought this because I knew the name was a quality make I have not been disappointed it’s lightweight easy to use really gets thatch out of the lawn very powerful and I have only ever used the lowest setting the grass box probably lets it down a little being so small you have to empty it constantly that aside though I am very impressed since using it it does a really good job of removing dead grass and thatch from my lawn would definitely recommend this produc
I’ve bought this model twice now, having bought a bigger, more expensive machine in between and the bigger one from a different maker was such a let down. Was actually pleased when my old one stopped working so I could purchase this one again. I don’t use the collecting tray which in a bigger garden is way too much work constantly emptying. I find just raking it all into a pile afterwards much less work.
It does what it says!
Loved everything about this product, long cable, easy to use, very light and it fetches up lots of moss and dead grass, only used on highest setting
Moss box does not hold a lot therfor requires frequent emptying a problem with various machines i have used other than that very good machine easy to use and very light weigh
A scarifier (lawn rake) that cost me less than hring one for a day. It was very easy to put together and works very well. There are three settings. It probably doesn’t rake down into the soil quite as much as a petrol scarifier, but it was exactly what I needed after chafer grubs had decimated my lawn. It has got the dead grass out really easily and removed most of the moss. I recommend it.
Brilliant machine, don’t hesitate if considering one of these!!
I spent hours a few weekends ago manually scarifying our lawn, then found this on Amazon and dd the job again last night, wow, absolutely amazed at how much this thing collects, literally filled our green bin with dead moss and thatch. I did the worst of the garden on the lowest setting and the rest on the medium setting. The low setting is very aggressive!!
Although the lawn currently looks a bit of a state, with aeration, reseeding to fill in the bare patches, water and a bit of sun, the lawn will recover quite quickly..
Go for it!
I like that it is lightweight but the best part is the collection box. I previously borrowed a relative’s machine without a box and it was such a pain having to pick the moss up manually. Therefore I thoroughly recommend this product.
I bought this scarifier to replace a really old model and am pleased by how well it does the job despite being much lighter than my old one. Also like the choice of rake height. Self assembly was pretty simple, although a couple of the screws didn’t fit quite flush.
Having moved to a property with a very mossy lawn, I thought I would buy this to save my back. Lets face it – it would have taken ages to remove all the thatch and moss from about 3/4 of what I thought was a nice green grass lawn. Nope it was mostly moss. This little machine is awesome, took it all out and down to bare ground. my only problem was getting rid of the moss it took off – about 6 black bin liners on the first go and about 3 after that (took that all down to recycling). After a second reseeding with grass seed ( pigeons descended on mass and ate the lot on the first attempt to regrow the lawn) the grass is starting to grow and looking good.
Works well. The only minor issue is that on thick moss it is quite hard to push due to short wheel base.
Putting it together was a bit tricky but once together it was easy to use. It lifted an amazing amount of moss so be prepared to empty the trough lots of times
The only thing letting this down is the flimsiness of the grass box and the awkwardness of removing it when full. Still a good piece of kit.
For a cheap lightweight lawn scarifier this little monster does the business. It’s stores away neatly in shed or garage so certainly earns its keep.
This thing is amazing. It might look small but it can certainly do its job and i was very impressed.
Only thing to comment (as everyone else has mentioned) is that the bag is small and you will be forever emptying it . (and i mean forever)
Also and it seemed that i could have gone on forever and it would have picked up more and more and more and i wasnt sure when to stop, but thats a user thing and not a comment on the machine itself.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from an electric rake however I have been very surprised at how effective it is. The lawn rake is very easy to assemble (10 mins) and I was ready to go, I bought it primarily to remove moss and being brave or stupid I went straight for the lowest setting. The rake is amazing almost working too well. The only minor comment is that the basket for catching the moss fills very rapidly however it is a small price to pay for such a good job.
Like many who have reviewed I was dubious that the cheapest on the market woudl be up to the job. And like many I was pleasantly surprised. I have a large garden that is mostly lawn and this is the first time it has had any attention in the 25 years I’ve been living here. Unfortunately large areas of the garden sit in shade for a lot of the year thanks to a neighbours 8 huge lailandi that he refused to lop..So there was a lot of moss. This scarifier has done as excellent job and in a few hours I filled 2 X 250 litre wheelie bins.
The good:
Although the collector is small – it is open so clippings can quiclky be compressed by hand to gain more space and save having to empty every 30 s.
Motor perfectly powerful enough.
The not quite so good:
The handle is slightly too upright which can make it difficult to push on slightly bumpy bits of lawn. Not a show stopper though.
The annoying:
To get the motor going you have to push a button on the switch mechanism before pulling on the main switch. I know its supposed to be a safety feature – but really! You are much more likely to injure youself on the tangs when removing the clippngs tray as the motor spins down.
As with all cheaper devices such as this – it will last much longer if not worked beyond its limits, cleaned after use and stored properly.
Overall very pleased and would recommend.
Easy to use and very effective. Cut the grass fairly short first though and make sure there are no large sticks or stones on the lawn.
I have a large lawn which I try to look after. A few weeks ago I spent a good number of hours hand taking the lawn with not very good results. This little machine did a far better job in less than a quarter of the time. It’s very effective, well made. And seems very durable. I used it for two hours solid and filled two wheelie bins with moss and thatch. Fantastic value for money. Well impressed.
I’d let my lawn get out of control with moss over the last 2yrs .. at least 50% was fully moss so decided to try this and I only wish I’d got this sooner. Word of caution .. use the highest setting 1st and it gets all the moss out. If it has one draw back the collection box fills up really fast so you spend as much time empting it as you do getting the moss out, also if the ground is a little wet you will get a build up of mud clogging the wires up .. I guess this is why some people had the motor burn out on them.
All in all if you have loads of moss this will save you hrs. and save your back.
I got a quote from plant hire company which was more than this item cost to buy
so ordered it not expecting too much in the way of performance but what a surprise three different cut positions
did a fantastic job however i would recommend that it is not used while lawn area is damp otherwise when it is in it’s lowest cut position it will churn up soil as well and then clog up.
If used correctly this will do the job no problem
Does what it says on the tin. Bag is a little too small but that’s ok given that you are only meant to use it 2-3 times a year. All the pins are in tact and I have had it 3 years now. Lawn looks great a few weeks after using gets rid of all the moss and cross blades that prevent sunshine from getting to the soil – definitely a good buy
Great garden addition. Makes raking the lawn easy. No more back ache. Can’t think why I didn’t get one sooner. Lawn is looking better after only one go. Great value for the money compared with the more expensive ones.Arrived before the estimated time. Yes I would use seller again. Thank you
Removed an amazing amount of crud from the lawn. The collecting box is not large, and fills up quickly – but that helps to keep it light and manoeuvrable. It is true that because the box is at the front you can’t go right up to a wall with it on, but it’s usually possible to tackle them sideways – or remove the box, and brush up afterwards. The depth of aeration was perfect for lifting moss and removing old cuttings.
Easy to assemble, you just have to connect on the handlebars. Up and running within 30 minutes of delivery. I used this on my medium sized lawn which was dry and mid length at the time of use. I had not scarified the lawn for at least 4 years and it was amazing how much rubbish came out. I used the lowest setting but was pleased that the lawn did not look like a bomb site after use. Other reviewers have pointed out that a problem with scarrifying is that the collection bags are too small. This is the case with this machine but the beauty of this machine is that the collection bag is open. To empty you simply stop the machine and empty the bag by hand into a wheelbarrow or bags simply by picking up the contents. No need to disconnect the collection bag. Really quick to do, even though in my case the bag had to be emptied after each run down the lawn.
Only criticism is that the clips supplied to hold the cable onto the handle are useless, but not really a problem.
In summary, a great machine for the price.
Good little machine. You have to make sure you have the settings right or you won’t be left with much grass! Makes removing thatch and moss into an easy and effortless job. Be prepared to walk pretty briskly behind the machine once started. All in all a good little machine for small gardens.
I bought this not only for the scarifying but for the rake too, my neighbour has a very large beech tree and a very large oak tree that overhang our garden which he is refusing to cut back so all the acorns and beech nuts that fall (not to mention all the leaves due to come down soon) are a pain and hard work to hand rake up. I saw this advertised for just 56 (double the price of a decent hand rake) and thought I’d give it a go…. I’ll never use a hand rake again, this machine is amazing. I’ve only used it once since it was delivered just a couple of hours ago but already can see a huge difference in my lawn. I used it on the highest setting and have half filled my 240l garden waste bin and have only done half of my garden.
Really impressed. Level 1 doesn’t really break the surface, but it’d be good for collecting grass cutting and picking up leaves. Level 2 starts to get into the top layer of the grass, and I’d suggest that as a replacement for raking up dead weeks following a weed-n-feed product. Level 3 really gets into the ground and removes all of the thatch – see photo included! One month later, you can see my lawn has recovered very well indeed.
Well this black and decker lawnraker is pretty good for around 60, it does a great job on the shallowest setting in removing thatch debris and leaves, I did not yet need the deeper settings.
It also levelled out a few humps in the grass without me expecting it to.
I will comment that I should have cut the grass first as the longer rye grass wound itself around the end bearings, my fault not the machines fault, I never read instructions.
Well, its a “Yes” from me.
And a “Yes, but you should have cut the grass first” from She who knows everything!
I found that this lawnraker did an excellent job of raking out the debris from my lawn. It’s lightweight and very easy to push. the only down side is that the basket fills very quickly and you need to stop often to empty it. having said that I didn’t find it a big problem as the benefits far outweighed this need. It was one of the cheaper models available but really does a good job and I’m very pleased with the results.
What an amazing piece of kit. We have major problems with moss and this raker just ripped through it like a sweeping brush and left in its wake lovely clear grass. We raked and then cut the grass and went over again with the raker and I am very impressed with what’s left. We plan to grass seed the now free moss patches and then feed and fingers crossed that will be it!
Filled 6 x 50 L bin bags in 10 minutes, reseeded and now, 10 days later, my lawn is on the road to recovery. Or so I thought! Grass recovered only in patches and yesterday 10 May 2018 I decided to use the lawnraker again. Bad idea. No sooner had I pressed the switch when a deafening screeching came from the machine. So bad that I had to stop immediately to save damage to whatever was causing the screeching. Decision time.
Don’t leave reviews unless awesome or rubbish ..this falls into the awesome category !
Lawn looked ok but was amazed at rubbish Bd dead stuff it picked up yet grass was still there after !
Makes a right mess and takes 3 times longer to clean up than use but results are amazing
Only downside is collection bin .throw in bin as waste of time as fills within one metre of using
Having bought the cheapest lawn raker available, I didn’t hold out much hope of it doing a great job, just better than I could do with the hand rake. It proved me wrong. This Deck & Blacker Lawnraker has a badass attitude towards lawn moss and weeds. It whacked the whole lot into submission and showed no mercy, not even to the daisies. From my 25ft lawn, I filled 8 big bin bags plus my large wheelie bin and several neighbours.I only used the medium whacker level so might try the deeper one in Autumn. Just wish I could start a business selling dead moss! Highly recommended.
I read the few bad reviews about this item but fortunately I disregarded them. The basket does need to be frequently emptied but that is acceptable when you see how much stuff is raked up. Hopefully much less will come out in future, as I never raked the lawn so thoroughly before.
The machine works exactly as described and for the price it is the best deal on the market in my opinion. It is really easy to setup and light enough to move around and store. I recommend this item without reservation.
Great little scarifier. Comments same as everyone else really. Collection basket is waste of time. Fills in about 5 seconds so forget that and use the lawnmower to hoover up the moss.
Good value fixed my lawn ok the collector is small but with patience and we’ve got 170 foot lawn in a fewdays it was much better helped grass grow now have a lovely lawn with some grass seed which I just sprinkled over patches and a week of rain plus watering look good
Very good all round, except for the collection bin/tray.
This sticks out the front and fills up rather too quickly. If there is a lot of moss, this starts rolling back into the scarifying compartment. I quickly got rid of this and reverted to raking the deposits.
The collection issue would be solved if it were on the year and blew the moss into it, but this would make the whole contraption heavier, so for occasional use this is still a fine machine.
Really bad moss infestation. This went through it like a hot knife through butter. Lifted unbelievably loads of moss which was quite satisfying to watch – filled a 260 litre bin in two hours. Grass is basically bare now so ready to started reseeding
Easy to assemble. Pleased with the results but my lawn was so bad with thatch that it soon filled the box. Required several emptying which was tedious, but hopefully, over time this will be a lesser problem. My old B & D lawnrake lasted over ten years, and I have no doubt this model will do the same. Well priced, I can afford the initial tedium!
it does what it says it does, and I was amazed just how much debris comes off the lawn! However, what I wasn’t prepared for is how patchy my lawn now looks!! I am still in the process to re-seed the parts that haven’t been growing. Wish me luck!
Did the job well, and saved me a lot of time and energy. My garden would be classed as a medium sized garden, and i was conscious that the machine was working at its maximum. However, i am satisfied , and i think it is good value for the price.
Great scarifier at a very good price, my lawn looked amazing after a good hour of raking, only downside is the grass box, it doesn’t hold a lot and needs emptying often, otherwise well worth the money.
This did a fantastic job of my front lawn. Any more moss and we could have been harvesting peat in a few years time. It took a long time; I was emptying the collection box every half meter on the first pass over, but the machine held up and the result was excellent. The green is just beginning to come back now after a few weeks and a lot of rain. I had originally been planning to hire, but with this I was able to spread the work over a few days, and I can give it another go in the autumn.
Works well but small collector basket needs frequent emptying. Saw other comments about difficulty assembling handles and thought ‘how difficult can it be to fix a handle to a motor!’ As it happens it took me a few attempts to get the handles on the right way round having to unscrew the fixings every time I realised I had got them on wrong.
Only used once yet.but seems good,I hope the lawnraker continues to work well, will update…Good.
I couldn’t believe just how much moss was in my lawn. I set this up from the box which was extremely easy to assemble. Plugged it in and gave it a damn good outing along the front lawn, I was a little concerned about how quickly the grass box filled up, this actually highlighted to me just how much the moss had overtaken the garden. The removal of the moss and the different height settings makes it perfect to give the grass the breathing space it needs to re-establish itself. It is also perfect for picking up the grass cuttings as well as Autumn leaves.
I’ve been amazed at how good this is. I’ve steered clear of this brand in passed as quality never seemed good. However, this machine has proved very effective at removing moss, thatch and pine needles from a lawn. It generated a giant pile. I managed to do 1/3 acre in a day (quite narrow) which had taken 3 days of raking last year. Pine cones tend to jam in the rotating drum but apart from that, it seems brilliant.
Bought for a (very) large lawn in a a property we have just moved into. Even on the gentlest setting I was amazed how much moss this removed – I was emptying the basket on every strip. As well as doing a great job with the moss, it picked up the leaves and left the lawn nicely striped. I was expecting this to be heavy work, but the raker seems to pull itself along (or maybe the roller is powered), so scarifying is a very simple job. For a budget device I am very pleased indeed.
Used this 3 or 4 times in 2016 and it certainly removed cut grass and moss very well and a million times less effort than raking! I augmented with lawn fertiliser, combined I had a great green lawn all year.
I was surprised at how much debris this machine actually picked up from the lawn. But Its small collection basket means that you’ll be emptying often. And although it comes with a 10m cord, it feels like it could of done with more. All in all a very good product but i wished i’d opted for a petrol one as the cord does become a nuicance from time to time.
Could not believe how much moss this pulled from our lawn. The collecting box fils very quickly so we found the best option was to take it off and collect the moss with a rake afterwards. Yes the lawn looked terrible afterwards so don’t scarify your lawn if you have a special event imminent but 2 weeks later it started to improve and the lawn has been green and lush all this Summer . Passing dog walkers have commented how good it looks ! We will definately be using it again early next year. For the price it is very good value.
It did everything I wanted it to do very well. This is a sort of thing you might use once a year. My biggest criticism is the size of the collection box not being big enough; you will be amazed at the amount of ‘thatch’ it takes out from the lawn.
It’s an excellent lawn rake fir a small garden. Removes plenty of dead thatch and moss without too much damage to the grass sward. Easy to change the height with three settings. Two for lawn scarifying and one for leaf raking. Only criticism is that the box fills up very quick and needs emptied a lot. Maybe I had a lot of dead material to remove but it was a pain having to stop to empty it constantly.
Overall a great machine
This was delivered really quickly (thanks Amazon) and once I had assembled it, I put it to use on my (mossy) front lawn. The motor is really powerful and can feel like it is pulling you along. The collection bin fills up really quickly but thankfully it is easy to get the debris out of the bin and into a bigger container (I use a plastic dustbin) without taking the collection bin off the raker. There are three heights which are easily selectable and the machine is very light to use. I had no problems with the height control resetting but my lawn is fairly flat anyway. The power cord is particularly long so an extension cable will be needed if your lawn is medium to large or if you dont have a power outlet anywhere near.
This is a nice easy machine to use at a very good price.
Did the job – easy to put together – worked great. Not sure why some reviews are so poor – it is pretty much the cheapest product of its kind on the market – but saying that, it worked well, all the parts fit. I used the centre setting and it did the job. It will be used 2 or 3 times a year on my medium sized lawn – great – very happy!
Our garden was mainly laid to moss when we moved in. We tried some decent moss killer and then the raking began. Manual raking. Not for the faint hearted. After 2 days I gave up and bought this, I didn’t want to spend a great deal as after this year I’m hopefully not going to be using it more than a couple of times a year. Was pleased with the item, easy to put together (only the handles really!) and it made short work of pulling up the moss. Made my manual pile look embarrassing. Yes the collection bag thing is small but I was aware of that and for half the price of the next lawn raker I felt it was worth it!
Excellent product for the price. Performs as expected, clearing moss and detritus very well. Only problem is that the collection box is far too small for the amount of moss, etc, that the machine produces, requiring very frequent emptying which slows down the whole process. I’d still recommend the Lawnraker however.
Ordered on a Tuesday and delivered on Thursday. I was slightly suspicious that the Black & Decker box looked as though it might have been resealed. When I opened it, the bolts, washers and orange wing-nuts that clamp together the upper and lower parts of the handle were MISSING. I first tried B&D to see whether they could supply the missing parts, but they said it was not their problem as it was “Amazon’s job to check that all the contents are present”. Odd I thought. I’ve never previously had a problem with Amazon goods, but when I then contacted them they were great. The agent Evon and I worked together looking to see whether Amazon could order the parts for me from B&D but we couldn’t be 100% certain about part numbers, so Evon said that he didn’t want me messed about any more and therefore he’d send a complete replacement lawnraker, by top priority delivery. The next morning the incomplete lawnraker was collected, and at lunchtime the replacement was delivered. It was my first experience of Amazon’s legendary customer service and I was IMPRESSED! I assembled the machine without too much problem, and it works well (I’ve previously owned the 100 model and the 200, both of which, with occasional dismantling, gave many years of hard service). Lifting off/on the collection box has been much improved, and the ends of the tine rotor seems less inclined to pick up and get jammed with longer vegetation. A minor point is that the plastic cable-clips that keep the fixed cord tidy seem to unclip too easily. Very satisfied so far.
Great bit of kit and for 59 delivered can’t go wrong. Had a mcculloch one before and it kept jamming up with thatch and eventually burned out this seems to work much better and all debris collects in basket well. Make sure wheelie bin is empty before you start it gets a lot of moss and thatch out of lawn (not been done for couple of years).
Does exactly as expected/required. Has removed loads of dead grass and rubbish from our lawn.
It does create brown patches where it removes the dead waste, but this is to be expected. As long as you use it at the right times if the year, the new strong grass comes back within a few weeks.
i was not expecting too much from a basic unit with a relatively low power motor but it it worked a treat. We only have small lawns front and back (approx 30 sq m ea) but one pass completely filled a ‘wheelie bin’ and left the lawn looking a bit sparse – a couple of weeks later and it looks far healthier. So I have to say I am very pleased with this lawnrake
Very impressed didn’t expect it to be as good results as doing by hand. Did effortlessly surprised how much thatch it collected (approx every 4 metres ) then needed emptying. We have never raked previously for last 8 years though. We cut grass short first to assist it. Very lightweight only negative lead was short approx 6 metres. Then we cut grass again as it lifts rye grass after combing lawn that had been held down previously by all the thatch! Good thing as occasional use each year should last a while hopefully.
This is a very good machine. Had trouble with clover and moss on my lawn. Have used this once after mowing and it has removed near enough EVERY bit of moss, clover and even weeds. The only gripe that I’d have with this is the small collection container – this needs emptying quite a lot and quite quickly BUT that said it does clear a A LOT of dead waste material very fast (my garden is the size of a 5 a side football pitch and it takes some time!!). Love this so far and as long as it keeps running for a couple of years with limited use then I’ll be more than happy.
Was wondering whether i should buy this lawn raker after reading some of the other reviews. It is so cheap but after using it a couple of times it really does the job and I can’t complain. The only reason why I haven’t given it five stars is because others are right. Any slight knock and the front grass collector falls off. Real shame but go easy with it and it dosen’t happen too often. It was easy to build out of the box and I wasn’t silly enough to turn it on whilst still inside and ruining my carpet! If you want a lawn raker to use a few times during the year then at this price you can’t go wrong.
Flabbergasted by the amount of moss this lawnraker has and continues to remove! The basket fills up very quickly and you do have to make many trips to the green bin to empty, however I can’t see how it could hold much more without toppling forward!
So long as you ease this into your grass (i.e. highest (above ground) setting first, followed by lower settings on other days), the spokes should be able to cope.
Our lawn was full of moss but we were doubtful if this, the cheapest machine of many, would be up to the job. It was. It moved moss with little effort on our part except for emptying the stuff into the dustbins. Light and easy to use and one clear advantage. The collector can be emptied without taking it off the machine. Just grab the moss and llift it into the bin. If I had bought a machine which collected moss into an internal receiver I’d have been dismantling the collector every couple of metres of lawn. This one is much faster and easier. Thoroughly recommended even though it is the cheapes
The machine seems a bit flimsy to start with but I have been very impressed with how it has coped with my lawn which hasn’t been raked for many years. The collection box is easily knocked off which is a slight inconvenience, but overall I rate this a good buy and would recommend for small to medium size lawns.
My old black and decker lawn raker finally packed up (it was over 30 years old!)
I purchased this as replacement and am very pleased with it.
Much more plasticy than old one but works just as well ,however I doubt that it will last another 30 years ,but that wont bother me!!!!
Never use collector so cannot comment about i
I bought this product because I had grown tired of manually raking the moss from my 130 square metre lawn each year and this was the cheapest electric scarifier I could find. The machine was put to the test for the first time today and it cleared a large wheeled bin’s worth of moss and dead grass with incredible ease in only ninety minutes. Afterwards, I gave it a thorough cleaning and there was no evidence of any damage to the wire tines despite the garden being quite uneven and full of stones. I am happy to recommend it.
For once simple is best. There are more expensive models available but this does the job. Unless your lawn has a lot less thatch than mine forget the collecting basket as it fills all too soon. Better to rake the lawn with this and then use a plastic prong hand rake to clear the waste into your garden bin. If you have a mower that collects the cuttings run that after raking and there is less clearing up needed.
I have assembled this today and used it once on my 60 m2 lawn. Assembly is fairly easy, but if you assemble the handle on the longer choice you might find it easier to reverse the instructions and screw the bottom half into the body, then add the top half. The reason for this is there seems to be too much tension on the power cable if you assemble both halves then try to slip it into the body of the machine.
Using the machine is simple, but be aware that if you loosen your grip on the switch lever at all it will cut the power instantly. I guess that’s the cost of a safety feature. Also the switch lever seems a little flimsy, so I don’t know how long it will last. That concern is why I marked it down from 5 to 4 stars.
As usual amazon service was very good with accurate descriptions and prompt delivery.
The `Lawnraker` parts arrived in a box and it was easily put together to make it look something like the picture (I did have a couple of bits left over but that`s quite normal for me). I found the assembled machine to be surprisingly lightweight although there`s not much to it really so I shouldn`t have expected anything more.
As with any electrical gadget, you just have to try it out in the living room first regardless of where it`s actually going to be used and after plugging it in and turning it on, I pressed the usual `button and trigger` combo and it sprang into life. When I say `sprang`, it was more of a rattle and clatter as the rotating bar flung the vicious little metal tines round sending the poor cat into a haphazard frenzy of jumping and climbing over a variety of furniture items until sanctuary was found under the sun lounger in the garden.
As always, I didn`t read about it first as the excitement was too great and as I later found out the setting was at maximum rake (number 3 of 3), I quickly realised to my horror that the innocent looking tines had taken a number of tidy grooves out of my carpet and after panicking to turn the thing off and grab a large glass of wine (any excuse), I knew that the years of moss build-up in the lawn would be no match for this little devil and I wasn`t wrong.
I rearranged the furniture in an attempt to cover up the damage and actually quite liked the look of a rug slightly off-square in the doorway (although the other half wasn`t amused when the truth came out) but back to more important matters, the lawn. Now knowingly on it`s maximum rake depth, I turned it on again and the machine skipped across the top of the lawn in a half hearted escape effort but as it was so lightweight, I stood my ground and pulled it sort of backwards and downwards which then caused the tines to dig into the lawn/moss/thatch build-up and spew a huge load of debris into the awaiting grass box and it`d only done about a metre !
Luckily I had the foresight to have my wheelie-bin handy and after emptying the grass box into it, I refitted it back on the rake and resumed work …. Yep, you`ve guessed it – another metre and the grass box was full again and another metre – empty it – and another – and another .. you get the idea. Technically I`m not sure how the design could be improved but the grass box is so small that I was walking between rake and bin so many times, I genuinely lost count and that was the smallest of five grassy areas that need it doing so when I finally finished that one, I rewarded myself with (another) glass of wine and after that, I really couldn`t be bothered to carry on so I packed the rake away and consoled the cat who by that time, was watching me from the garage roof and giggling at me.
Quick conclusion: Even though it`s got a slightly flimsy feel to it, the rake does exactly what it supposed to do and does it well but the size of the collection box really lets it down although I`m not sure how they could improve it sensibly. Purely for the collection box size, I`m giving it 4 stars but if they allowed me to give 4.5, I`d do that as the machine itself really does do the job.
Just a final comment you should be aware of – If you use the rake on maximum depth rake, your lawn will be brown as it pretty much strips away the top inch or so but if your lawn is made up of mostly moss, as in my case, then you won`t be too worried as you`ll know you`re getting rid of the nasty stuff and allowing the grass to re-establish itself even though it will take a little while and if you strip too much away, then you can always reseed in areas of emptiness.
I previously owned an earlier model of this Lawnraker. It works adequately to remove moss and dead grass from my lawn,
although I am aware a larger more powerful machine would probable do the job better. However I think it is good value
for money. The grass/moss container is better at collecting the material than my old model
Others have criticised the size of the collection box and it is true it has to be emptied frequently, but that is the nature of scarifying – it produces an awful lot of material. If I have a complaint it is that even on the maximum setting it is not very destructive and hence does not remove all moss and thatch even on two passes at right angles, but that is what must be expected of a low cost and lightweight machine.
What a great little machine for the price! I cannot believe how much moss and weed it removed from my lawn. I had to go over the same spot a few times but that’s more a reflection on the state of my lawn. It’s not as powerful as some of the petrol machines but it’s also a quarter of the price. Well recommended.
Pros: Very effective raking, three height settings, very light, easy to assemble.
Cons: Fills the basket in seconds (because it’s very effective) which means lots of stopping and emptying.
I needed an electric lawn raker as I am no longer able to rake the lawn by hand, I looked at the models available and was horrified at the prices! I had used a friend’s Black and Decker model before, but the price of purchasing the replacement model varied so much I wasn’t sure enough to commit to the purchase. Reading the reviews posted by other users also made me less sure of the wisdom of buying this model. Then I saw that Amazon were offering used models at around 26, so I thought it was worth the risk at that price. If it was no good, it wasn’t a great deal to lose. When it arrived I unpacked it and I was amazed! It looked brand-new, there was no evidence it had even been unpacked, never mind used, apart from a few tiny scratches where the upper handle attached to the lower. To all intents and purposes it was a brand-new machine for a fraction of the cost of a new one, so I was extremely pleased to say the least!
The awful spring weather finally relented enough for me to try it today and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Although it feels extremely light, in action it worked very well. I used it on the middle of the three settings and it picked up a surprising amount of debris from a lawn that I didn’t think was too badly kept! It is much easier than the old model to switch between ‘cutting’ heights, simply press a button on the right rear roller and dial one of three heights, from just sweeping the grass, normal raking to heavy scarifying.
Debris collection could be better, it doesn’t take long at all to fill the collector to the point that the debris is spilling over the back edge, back onto the lawn, so you’re emptying the collector every couple of minutes. At least it shows that it’s doing something, because the debris does mount up pretty rapidly. You have to watch that you don’t get longer grass wrapped around the outer ends of the shaft holding the spring tines if you use it on a more overgrown patch. If you do, the raker starts to slow down and the bearings start to overheat, but it’s a simple matter to clear it with a knife and things are back to normal again.
Overall, it’s a good raker for light use, but I don’t know whether it would cope with heavy or professional use. I certainly wouldn’t want to pay anywhere near the recommended retail price! But the used models available from Amazon warehouse I’d certainly recommend for average household use. I’m very happy with mine and I’m looking forward to many years of work from it. Maybe I’ve been lucky and got a good one, but I think that some people might have been expecting a little too much?
I purchased this rake to replace the B&D GD200 which had given many years of reliable service, still worked, but was getting short of thongs and would cost more to replace than a new machine. Not surprisingly I made a direct comparison between the two models. With a little bit of practice I found the GD300 easier to empty than its predecessor and lighter to handle. Many have commented on the fact that the collection box fills up quickly but given just how much moss and associated rubbish is removed by the rake one would need a huge collection box to avoid this, so it wasn’t a problem. The cord was a little on the short side and if not careful it would be easy to extend too far, whereas on the old model the connection would automatically break under pressure because there were two cords that clipped together. So, overall, I would say that so far at least the latest version of this product is good value. Amazing just how much the price varies even on Amazon over the course of a few days. I paid 39 and it is now priced at 50.
Somewhat disappointed that only 3 years on (June 16) the motor has apparently burnt out especially as it has only been used to rake my (tennis court size) lawn once a year since purchase in May 13. Think this is because the compartment that the motor is housed in – under the red cover held in place with 4 screws – was packed tight with grass/moss. Don’t recall the cleaning/maintenance instructions advising that the cover should be removed periodically and cleaned out. Had it done so quite likely that the machine would still be running. Recommend you check yours occasionally if you don’t want to suffer the same fate.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the collection basket is extremely small and needs emptying ad nauseum. BUT… does the job (our problem was extensive moss) very well indeed. Only other problem was that it arrived with a couple of parts missing from the box. Disappointing but one phonecall to a very helpfull Black & Decker help-line and the bits arrived two days later.
PS. My neighbour has had one for years (which is why I ordered the same model) with trouble free use.
Received very promptly and didn’t take too long to set up (from a bloke whose wife leaves the house very quickly when flat pack needs assembling!). One quick trip around the outside of the lawn (40m approx) produced reasonable results but then I realised it was on it’s “lightest” setting. Set to it’s toughest setting and something like 90 mins later (and two dozen trips to the compost heap!!) my previously green lawn looked scalped. However the stuff coming out was straw coloured so it must have been doing something right. The collection bag is small but slots on the front easily so at least that isn’t a issue.
My only concern is that the machine seems light weight and may only be suitable for smaller lawns. Time may prove me wrong but for 42 I doubt this is going to be a long term investment.
I don’t know what all the fuss is about in other reviews regarding the basket jumping off. I have done both front and back and the basket never came off once. I have only used #2 setting for the moment, It shifted the moss and weeds a treat. Like another reviewer said, you need a big bag or your wheelie bin close at hand, It don’t take long to fill the basket. All in all it’s a little belter of a machine. Should have got one of these years ago. The lawns are looking 100% better, even without the lawn feed on them yet. I would recommend this product to anyone who has any sized lawn. Good on yer Black & Decker, excelle
An excellent product, a mound of moss almost as tall as me emerged after I had finished my 10m x 18x lawn! Never will I manually rake my lawn.
I would have given this 5 stars BUT the collector basket is FAR too small – however if you use this device regularly I guess it is of adequate size because it wouldn’t pickup as much moss.
A great bit of kit, very pleased!
I hired one of these for a day, and liked it so much I went out and bought one from Amazon.
It looks small and – if I’m honest – feels a bit flimsy, but my word does it do its job well! It throws up amazing volumes of thatch. It’s really staggering how thoroughly it scarifies your lawn. It throws the rubbish into the basket at the front very well (this fills up too fast, but I can’t find a scarifier that doesn’t have this problem).
In my opinion, the function you get for the price is amazing.
Does the job, but it feels a little lightweight which is great for maneuverability, but IMO could do with a little more pressure so the raking system really gets into the lawn. I am worried that the fixing design to the basket is also a little flimsy, but only time will tell. On the plus side the grass now has less moss. It didn’t clear all as it is quite an uneven lawn due to trees so I will have to give it another go with some downward pressure to get the areas not reached.
Delievry was very quick and the price was keen.
DELEVERY WAS VERY QUICK AS I WAS OUT AT THE TIME THE DELIVERY MAN PUT IT IN THE GARAGE, CLOSE AND LOCKED THE DOOR, FULL MARKS, THE LAWN RAKE WAS VERY EASEY AND QUICK TO ASSEMBLE,AFTER CUTTING THE LAWN FIRST, I THEN TRYED OUT THE LAWNRAKE AND IT WORKED BRILLIANTLY, MY ONLY CRITICISM IS THE BASKET WHICH CATCHES THE GRASS IS TO SMALL,WHEN ONLY HALF FULL IT NEEDS TO BE EMPTY, AND IT FILLS UP QUICLY,BUT IT DOSE A GOOD JOB
Usual great service from Amazon, package arrived on time from supplier well packaged, easy to put together. Bought this as a replacement for a similar Draper Lawnraker (which by the way lasted for 6 uses on 3 medium size lawns over 18 months before a smoking motor). Although Draper customer services tried to be helpful they could not offer any assistance other than to recommend I bought a replacement !!!! So I did a BLACK & DECKER which has a higher wattage motor, cost less and I am sure BLACK & DECKER can offer a better support network if required. So at the moment I am extremely happy with my purchase so far….
