Love it, it has replaced a battered old Gulfman watch and it’s just as good as that just as comfy to wear and easy to read.

The only thing that caught me out was the position of the light button which on the Gulfman used to be top right, now its the big G button, which can get pressed often by work jacket or shirt cuffs.

This is a great watch. It’s tough, solar powered, radio control to set watch time. It has a graphic tide time with the moon phase set to the left . Easy to read, the light when pressed is evenly spread. Just a great watch

It does exactly what it says on the box. Value for money and looks good on the wrist . Classic G Shock .

Looked good, well packaged but didn’t open the box as it was a gift which ended up being returned.

    I began this journey with a 5610 and now I’m 4 G-Shock’s in.
This one appears larger than it actually wears! Don’t be afraid to purchase it if your wrists aren’t large, anything around 6.5 Inches and above and this watch will be fine, they seem to have discovered the secret to the Seiko magic of making a watch wear smaller than you’d think and the inner flaps on the arches ensure a very snug fit.
Wether you’re a hardcore outdoor adventurer or a Fashionista you can’t go wrong. It’s feature packed and built like a tank. Welcome to the Rabbit Hole.

Bought this in 2016, not a problem to this day, battery still reads high, screen is scratch free, original wristband. Fantastic watch, simple and accurate.

As a seasoned user of the Casio G-Shock, I purchased this beauty to replace my faithful (but sadly now unreliable) MTG-930DU which lasted over ten years. That model was metal, this one is resin so only time will tell how it will compare in terms of durability.

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS
As is customary for Casio, the packaging for this watch is amazing. Inside the shiny black carboard box is the now traditional metal tin inside of which your watch nestles, surrounded by dense foam packaging to protect it from damage in transit. Somewhat ironic considering the situations this watch is designed to endure but nice to see nonetheless.

Once you remove all of the protective packaging you have a relatively lightweight product which you can almost forget you’re wearing. It looks rugged and stands approximately 1.5cm deep from your wrist.

Be sure to adjust the strap so that you can insert your pinky finger between the bracelet buckle and your wrist. Too tight and perspiration will accumulate which can cause skin irritations and prematurely weaken the resin of the strap. The watch should be able to slide SLIGHTLY up and down your wrist, something that you’ll quickly become used to. If, like me, you have meaty wrists, it won’t move too much. About 2 inches of movement is normal. Any more than that and you’ll be constantly shaking or pushing the watch back up to your hand!

    FUNCTION OVERVIEW
As usual, this watch is feature-packed but not ridiculously so. It boasts (in addition to the standard timekeeping mode), World Time (useful for travel abroad where the display will show the time in both your “home” city and your current location), an alarm, a countdown timer, a stopwatch, an illuminated display (we’ll come back to this shortly) and a Moon Phase / Tide display. Oh, and it’s atomically controlled which means no setting of the time. Ever. Nice!

If you’re a mariner (note that I avoided using the word “seaman” because I’m well aware that anyone with the mentality of a teenager will giggle inanely at the very mention of it) or a fisherman, this moon and tide display will, I’m sure, be pretty useful. Saying that, Casio themselves recommend that you don’t use this watch as a navigation aid. Makes sense, really. But to the average user, the moon and tide display is perhaps a little “gimmicky”. As anyone who works with the public will attest, it’s always nice to know when it’s going to be a full moon because things tend to get “interesting” on such nights but I honestly can’t see me using the tide display at all. Unless I have a sudden and unexpected change of career. Hmm. No. I like dry land, thanks.

That said, this feature is accommodated in a fairly narrow band across the centre of the display and isn’t obtrusive. You’ll soon forget that it’s there. And the next time someone says, “Hmm, I wonder if it’s a full moon tonight?” you’ll be able to glance at your watch and say, “No. Tomorrow night.” Sure to impress. Not sure it’s a great aid to pulling the ladies but it’ll certainly have colleagues nodding their heads approvingly.

    SET-UP
As is traditional, your G-Shock comes with a user guide that is the thickness of a telephone directory (remember them?!) but the footprint of a box of matches. Don’t worry, only a relatively small section will be in your native tongue so it won’t take you hours to learn how to use it. And it’s pretty logically written, too. What you NEED to know first followed by what you might LIKE to know.

For me, setup was very, very easy. Being a “Waveceptor”, the watch was already accurate in terms of the local time. I just had to change my home-city to LON (for London) to ensure that it would receive the time signal from Bury every night. I also switched the default 12-hour display to 24-hour and ensured that the AEL (Automatic Illumination) feature was switched OFF. I’ve never truly understood the need for this function. If I want to tell the time in the dark, I can press the light button (which, by default, illuminates the screen for 1.5 seconds, although this is switchable to 3 seconds for reasons I can’t quite fathom… how long does it take to read the time from a digital display?!) Anyway, I have no wish to have the display illuminate every time I turn my wrist to the position where I might reasonably be suspected of reading my watch. This usually occurred whenever I was driving and turning left (unless I had the steering wheel in a flat position) and if you’re a smoker who holds a cigarette in your right hand, the AEL function will regularly activate as you enjoy a smoke. Not particularly useful.

Instructions for setting your home city, switching between 12 and 24 hour modes and ensuring that AEL is switched off are clearly detailed in the instruction manual but, essentially, holding down the top left button from timekeeping mode (the standard display) puts the watch into SET mode. You can cycle through the options using the bottom left button and adjust each setting with the right-hand buttons. Pressing / holding the top left button again will save your settings and return the watch to the timekeeping mode. If you want to switch AEL on or off, hold down the light button (the one on the face of the watch with the “G” logo on it) for three seconds. If it’s ON, a mark will appear above AEL on the display. OFF and the mark goes away. Easy, huh?!

    CARE
As with all G-Shocks bearing the WATER RESIST or WATER RESISTANT logos, this watch is pretty water-resistant. However, there are a few caveats of which you should be aware.

As a diver, I can tell you that this watch is NOT suitable for SCUBA or Tethered activities. If you need an air supply (tanked or tethered) to dive, you should NOT be wearing this watch. Yes, it’s water resistant to 20 bar but if you need a regulator and BCD to dive, this watch is not for you. Or at least not to be used when diving. It’s fine for water sports (including swimming) but don’t operate any of the buttons whilst the watch is submerged. Best practice would be to avoid operating the buttons when the watch is wet in general. Only a small amount of water ingress can cause issues.

If you HAVE ignored this advice and taken the watch on a dive, it’s best practice to leave it somewhere warm and dry (preferably in rice to absorb any released moisture) for twenty-four hours before using it again. Symptoms of water ingress include a corrupted display or the constant activation of the illuminator.

In terms of bathing and showering, the watch WOULD be fine were it not for the presence of detergents. Soap, shampoo, shower gel and conditioner all contain chemicals which are capable of compromising the water resistance of the watch. You should, therefore, remove the watch before bathing or showering. Hand washing is not a problem – unless you need to wash your entire forearm, too!

To be honest, though? I wore my MTG in the shower AND the bath for years with no ill-effects. At least until the last six months when the display corrupted and I only had to sneeze in the general vicinity of the watch for it to beep and illuminate.

I guess what I’m saying is, don’t make a REGULAR habit of showering or bathing with your watch on. Try to get into the habit of removing it beforehand but, equally, don’t expect it to die should you forget. It’s a hardy little chap and will tolerate most abuses.

Regular exposure to sunlight (or even extended periods exposed to artificial light) will keep the rechargeable cell topped up so if you have no need to wear the watch at any time, take it off and place it on a secure window-sill or surface near a window to do a spot of “sun bathing” and top up the battery. Of course, if you HAVE left this watch in direct sunlight, be careful putting it back on if it’s hot! Duh!

And try not to regularly cover the watch with your sleeve. Why WOULD you?! Wear your G-Shock with pride. The bottom line is, the solar panel needs regular exposure to light to charge the battery. Like a teenager or a scientist, extended periods in a darkened room with no exposure to sunlight is not conducive to health.

    SUMMARY
I’ve worn G-Shock watches for the majority of my working life. They’re watches that you’ll go back to time and time again. Some of my watches have endured some pretty grisly and testing situations and come out relatively unscathed. They’re designed to endure moderately rough handling but I always try to ensure that my watch is protected from situations which are obviously going to test their ruggedness beyond reasonable limits.

If you’re looking for a rugged, light-weight, functional and practical watch, you’ve found it. The GW-7900-1ER is a perfect companion.

Having literally JUST received it, set-it up and strapped it to my wrist, it’s a little early to speak of durability but first impressions would suggest that this little beauty will adorn my wrist for quite some years to come.

Oh and there are two variants of this particular model. This is the “black on white” display. I did look at the “inverse” display but felt that it would be difficult to read. To clarify, as the photographs on the Amazon page show, the characters of the display are black and stand-out nicely against the white background of the display. As it should be, in my opinion.

The illumination is a pleasant cyan blue and isn’t too bright which is great for situations where you’d really rather not give away your position by having your face lit up like a Christmas tree. But I WOULD ensure that the illumination period is set to 1.5 seconds as opposed to the alternative 3 seconds because NOBODY needs to be reading the time for that long and every time that screen lights up, you’re using a considerable amount of juice.

In short, folks… I can’t hesitate to recommend this watch. Sure, you can spend 600+ on the Rangeman or Mudman series but who needs an altimeter?! The more functions, the more that can go wrong. So, for a sub 100 watch, this is a perfect choice.

Sure, there are a few caveats to its ruggedness but don’t let those put you off. If you forget to remove your watch occasionally when showering (or even diving to a recreational depth) it’s unlikely to die on you. It really is a watch that you can strap on to your wrist and forget about. But taking reasonable care to protect it from environments it’s not comfortable in is common sense (and a necessary evil in the case of most other watches anyway).

I hope this review proves useful to those, like me, who deliberated for some time before making their purchase. My advice? Go for it. You certainly won’t regret it and I’m confident that you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Sturdy unit and well presented. Well proportioned buttons for use with gloves.

Has survived heavy outdoor use and cleans off easy after sea water exposure too.

Perhaps a red illuminating light would be an improvement to the green.

This watch is a little marvel of technology. Casio created a perfect watch. No compromises here: keeps the perfect time, works all the time, survives anything and requires no attention. No charging, no battery, no winding. It is a good feeling to know that I will not need to attend to my watch for the next 20 years!

Water is no problem, shocks are no problem and it needs very little sun to charge it up. The watch arrived charged to “med” (it was on all the time while packed), but few hours later battery was “high” and has always been since. No sun is no problem, once charged it still works in complete darkness for a long time.

It is well built, with impressively solid design. Quite comfortable on my small hand too. Only the “screws” are unnecessary. They are just decoration anyways, so it does not matter if they fall out or not. But at least one is doomed to go missing in the next 20 years, as they are a bit wobbly.

The display is clearly visible in most conditions. It is good enough. It could be improved by different choice of technology, but that would mean other problems. GW-7900 is definitely a better choice than GW-7900B (one with inverted screen colors), black letters on white background are much easier to read.

Monochrome LCD display was an obvious choice here, because of its low power requirements and durability. E-ink display could be a better option in the future, but simple LCD is more reliable in the long run. So in 2021 Casio GW-7900 seems like the best selection of what technology can offer. It is a nearly perfect device for measuring time.

Considering the expected life-time of the watch (decades!) the price is not so high. It’s not the type watch you have to replace every year or two. It’s not the watch that you need to babysit every few days. It’s the type of watch that you wear and forget, it works always, requires nothing and doesn’t need to be replaced ever.

I expect to replace its internal battery somewhere in 2040.
If I’m still alive by then, I’ll write an update.

The watch is really robust. Big, clear display. Reliable radio timer function. Big buttons, easy to press. The strap is attached with screws which is brilliant when it needs to be replaced (which it will eventually).
Only grip is the tide function which seems a bit pointless for most users I guess. I tried two other models before this one and they were not grea

This might be the ultimate G Shock.
    It looks like it.
    It’s got the features.
And the price is unbelievable for what you get.
It connects to the satellites for multi band 6 when my other G Shocks can’t.
I have skinny wrists and this is a big watch but it doesn’t look wrong (it looks like a G Shock)
    I’m really pleased.
G Shock are bringing lots of new watches out in the 150 price range, But not with solar. This proves they could. I’ll stick with the old stuff till they bring out the new stuff but solar.

Wer keine Smartwatch will kann hier zugreifen.

Had this watch for 10 years now so I’m pretty sure I’ve tested it well enough. Only fault I’ve had in those years are one front screw went missing. Rugged tough and its a g shock what did you expect. If you want a watch you can wear every day and not worry about battery life then this is it. Plus its atomic time keeping is spot on. There’s no gps or heart rate or any other pointless stuff, its a watch and it does it well

I find the instructions hard to follow. I know friends have not. I bought on their recommendation and after an hour reading the instructions over several sessions I am little the wiser and I still cannot make it show tide times. But I have it on very good authority that indeed it has the ability to do tide predictions. If you buy I am confident you will make it work eventually.

I’ve already got watch just like this (GW 7900b 1ER), which is essentially the same watch but has a dark face and is sometimes hard to read depending on the current lighting, and therefore you have to move it slightly for you to make out the time. I drive for a living and found this made me look away from the road a bit longer than I’d like.

This watch is a LOT quicker to read and being discounted to 79.99 always helps. Well worth the money.

Luv this watch my second one, after about 6 years with heavy daily use from cement to cutting trees to working inside with cabling I finally admitted the watch keeper strap was nearly broken. Some scratch Mark’s on face but never lost a sec. I decided to get a new version. My favourite tide watch and once setup a consistent guide to rides.

I have had this watch I believe about 6/7 years was given as a present to me. I can safely say it’s a great watch. It has been through its paces, I’m a bricklayer and the amount of knocks scuff and grit getting over it and scraped on sandpaper like surfaces its held up and it good shape I’ve worn it non stop for most this time too.

For a watch so large it is incredibly light.

I can’t really comment on all of the functions as I’ve not used them all yet.

    Big but comfortable and light.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersMy wife bought me this watch because my current G SHOCK (GW-500U TOUGH SOLAR/WAVECEPTOR) is in need of a replacement rechargeable battery. I’ve had that watch for nearly fourteen years and it’s NEVER failed me. I’ve worn it every day. It is seriously battle-scarred but has worked flawlessly. My new G SHOCK had to be solar powered and auto-calibrating and this one seemed ideal (function v. cost) for everyday use. I hope it proves to be as reliable. It doesn’t feel quite so solidly made because there is no stainless steel at all on the case but the resin and plastics used feel really nice and tough, and it feels really good on. It feels like a quality watch. Its slightly bigger but I got used to it almost instantly and its not a problem on my 8 inch wrist. The digits are slightly smaller but perfectly legible and the Auto-Illuminator, as good as ever. Moon and tide function are handy to know when our local beaches will be accessible and for impromptu night walks. Unbox, set Home City and request time signal. It was set up and on me in ten minutes! Mine came with all tags, warranty card and Casio presentation tin. For now I’m impressed. I just hope Casio have built in the durability that us old school ‘G’ users are accustomed to.

Is it as 'G' as my previous one?

Beautifully designed watch. The feel and touch of the buttons is very responsive. The screen layout is very good and easy for your eye to instantly see the time and date in a split second, especially in high pressure working environments. In the dark its easy to find the buttons and the AEL (AutoLight) function works well. The strap is comfortable, important not to put it on too tight. If you have a skinny wrist this watch will probably not be for you. The weight of the watch is surprisingly light and after a while you wont notice you’re wearing it. The Moon&Tide Functions are useful ONLY if you properly learn how to read and understand the info. If you dont use these functions it doesnt matter, it wont hinder the other functions or spoil your enjoyment of the rest of the watch. The radio controlled callibration works well as long as you find a ‘sweet spot’ to leave the watch overnight. With worldtime,5 Alarms, signal, stopwatch, timer, waterproof, shockproof functions you cant go wrong for the price ,especially like me if you are used to wearing and using CASIO.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI already reviewed the negative display version of this watch. I used that for a day before coming to the conclusion it’s seriously compromised. The display is unreadable 50% of the time and suffers from awful visibility in natural light due to reflections on the glass. I found myself continuously moving my arm around to get a decent viewing angle. It’s also unreadable in low light without the illumination whereas the positive display is legible in all but complete darkness.

The difference with the traditional display is like night and day. Unfortunately I missed out on a voucher offer and paid 13 more but it’s a small price to pay for usability.

As said in my other review this is a great watch with excellent features. It’s very comfortable and wears smaller than expected. Do yourself a favour and get this one.

Avoid the negative display version. Get this.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFor me, this is the only watch I need: sure, it’s not a ‘dress’ watch, but it functions perfectly as a device to accurate and clearly display the time. In my line of work I’m constantly writing down times or keeping track of how long I have left. It’s imperative to have an easily readable display with a precise time. It also needs to take a fair bit of punishment! Suffice to say this watch does all of the above. It replaces a 5-6 year old G-Shock that finally gave up the ghost as the light button jammed and the 3rd button split in half. Bear in mind I’ve never had a watch last more than 6 months. I bought a 20 Casio and it lasted 3 months before I caught the strap at work and it broke.

    Must have features for me:

    1) Rugged and able to take a lot of punishment.
    2) Accurate time keeping: the watch sets its time via atomic clock (radio signal) each night so accurate to 1 sec.
    3) Solar powered: Imwork outdoors so it charges daily and I never have to change the battery.
    4) A light that activates by raising your wrist: I often have a folder in my left hand so would have to put it down to press a button to activate a light. It’s a simple thing but for me often working very early or very late shifts in the dark an invaluable time saver.

I just hope the buttons are a bit more durable on this version. The phone does seem chunkier and the buttons are larger and more easily pressed.
