It is a wonderful machine state of the art design for functionality. Costs less than en Einhell in B&Q
This is the old ELU model and still the best out there.
Great piece of kit. I’ve wanted one for ages, so glad I finally purchased one as it made the fitting of my kitchen much easier. The only slight downside for me was the circumference of the grip/starter lever too big. As a women, I found it difficult to press then button and hold the starter lever at the same time. Maybe it’s time manufacturers realise that in some households it’s the women that does all the DIY and make the grips slightly smaller!!
Man this saw rocks, I have used this to make up I mitre joints for a hexagon acoustic panels so far and it really shines. Never had another so can’t compare it but I’m very happy with it.
This saw is perfect for a keen DIY hobbyist or woodworker.
What I really like about this saw is that because it slides into itself like a trombone it takes up less space and even more so because it stores tilted to 45 degrees. It’s also really easy to calibrate to make sure that the cutting angle is correct and the system is robust enough to hold the angle once set. The way you get a shadow of the blade to indicate where the cut will be is a nice touch. On the negative side it does not cut very wide (ie the max width of a plank that you can put in it is not very big) and because the slide is not fixed and therefore not parallel to the deck you can’t adjust the depth of cut (on my old machine I could choose to not cut all the way through which was really handy for making parallel cuts that could then be chiseled out to form a groove for a joint. I do miss this feature.
I struggle to hold the handle, button and switch all at the same time.
This mitre saw is much lighter than my old Makita one. Easy to use, quick to set up & cuts lovely. Great tool.
This saw will not make you more attractive to women.
This saw will not help you loose weight (unless you cut the odd limb off – not recommended)
This saw will cut a piece of wood in a straight line – and that is more amazing than you might think!
It is super smooth in operation and the shadow line system is just pure genius – you can’t go wrong with it! (I did note someone on here complaining they couldn’t see the line in direct sunlight – well shock news just in – that’s how shadows work! Ever tried a laser in direct sun – yeah, thought so….)
Cheaper saws will have more bells and whistles but will be rough as sin to use and as for consistant square cuts – no chance.
You get what you pay for as the saying goes – DeWalt wins this battle with ease.
36 years as a carpenter and I can honestly say this bit of kit is worth every penny.
I used to have Dewalts largest mitre saw but found it way too heavy and storage was also a problem.
I purchased this for its size , but don’t let that fool you !
It’s just perfect in every way and extremely accurate straight out of the box .
I rate this 10/10
Have been using this now for a couple of weeks and find it excellent. Item was set up well out of the box. Footprint is quite small and noise level not overpowering. Dust collection is adequate once I managed to to fit an adaptor for my vac. Shadow line marker is excellent tho I have only used the saw indoors. The only negative of the whole experience for me was the manual, which uses graphics only to instruct you. Black knob at front locks the angle, black knob on top locks the slider, and pull the metal pin from the right to unlock the raising of it after you have opened the blade guard and pushed the blade down into the cutting slot. This machine will not do trench cuts, but I do that using table saw so no worries for me. I would recommend this machine.
Very good. Only negative comment is that I find the on handle, switch & button quite awkward to use all at the same time. It’s OK, but not intuitive and you should really be focussing on your work, not origami of the hand!
I’ve only given this product 4 stars for one minor gripe. The clamp! my god the clamp. In this day and age how a proper functioning clamp like device cannot be developed is beyond me. Particularly for a product in this price range. It’s just too infuriating to use it never sits correctly and is only useful on one side of the saw. Otherwise a great Mitre saw, had a small amount of adjusting out of the box and it was good to go. The shadow line feature is great and I cannot see myself doing without it in the future. One bit of advice though is to get a proper blade as the one supplied isn’t great, it works fine and all but don’t expect precision on the cut with regard to tear out.
Arrived very quick. All in good working order. Very happy with i
As always with Dewalt, an excellent product. Saved me a huge amount of time.
Couldn’t recommend highly enough.
Really good saw, it’s my first mitre saw. It’s well made.
Excellent saw at a very good price, trust De Walt. Highly recommended.
Easy to use for large pieces of timber. Inaccurate for smaller pieces
Great mid size saw not to heavy slide bars hidden keeps them clean & safe in the van.
I just love this saw, light and sturdy at the same time. I bought another blade to cut skirtings and the guide is so useful for this. Delivery was incredible as I live in a remote Scottish Island.
Excellent piece of kit, very happy with purchase. Very compact for a mitre saw, so easy to transport. The handles come in very useful for moving about. Really like the shadow line which is very accurate. Only gripe I might have if that the handle to activate the light, and hence the shadow line, I’d a bit fiddly. But overall a really good saw.
Excellent saw, cuts really well and accurately. The light which provides the cut line is really useful. Needs mounting to a bench or proper stand though otherwise it can tip when at full extension.
Only downside is the amount of mess it makes, for the money you pay the least Dewalt could do is provide the dust bag with it. Great all round saw, leaves a lovely true and clean cut.
I liked the compact size the cutting accuracy is good and Easy to use.
The shadow line is fantastic, the saw has great build quality. Time will tell on its life span but so far so good!
Nice and compact mitre saw but you do need to set it up with spirit and 90deg angle to make sure the cutting angles are correct. At the end of the saw extension, the saw isn’t as accurate or solid but in normal mode it’s good.
Downsizing in the w/shop this replaced my 305mm blade Dewalt as I don’t do the big stuff anymore! I was a bit wary but its an excellent machine, and if you’ve used a mitre saw you’ll know how important the dust extraction is and on this its EXCELLENT well worth the money
Really great saw and a massive jump up from the inaccurate chop saw it replaced. Really accurate, easy to change angles and a joy to use. It is relatively small but has enough cutting size for a smallish workshop like mine. Love it!
Nice compact mitre saw. Perfect for diy and light commercial use. Great for flooring and skirtings.
I needed this for a garden project that required a bit more precision than I could achieve with hand saws. I’m very pleased with it so far. For this price I wasn’t expecting pin-point accuracy, but using a bevel gauge I was able to get the angle cuts as accurate as I needed them to be. I had to make a couple of guide blocks/jigs etc but I think this would probably be necessary with a more expensive saw. I like the fact that it’s lightweight and doesn’t take up too much storage space.
Best power tool I own, only thing it can’t do is router cuts.
It’s the right product at the right price. Very accurate, clean cut. Safe and easy to use.
Couldent be more pleased! Does what it says on the box
We bought this lightweight compact saw at 257 prime. Arrived very quickly even though it was due to arrive in a month. We decided this one as the rails didn’t stick out the back and dewalt is a very good company. It is quite time consuming to set up but the main problem was unlocking the lock. After about 45 minutes we prised it open with a wrench. It came with uk plug so didn’t need a transformer. It chops amazingly. The clamp isn’t all that useful though as it never stays in place and doesn’t clamp well. I don’t regret buying it as the wood stays in place anyway and has a large cutting capacity. The dust extraction works well too. I have to note that the shadow line does not work well in the sun but that isn’t much of a problem. Really is very powerful and cuts are incredible. Great for a home DIYer. Would recommend.
Lovely little tool, really impressed at the quality for the price, makes cutting 45 degree cuts a dream
Probably in common with a lot of people during lockdown, I decided to have a go at being productive and making something. That led me to this DeWalt mitre saw – and it turns out to have been a great purchase! It feels like it’ll last for decades of home use.
I wanted to make some outdoor furniture, some planters and maybe a play deck for the kids. Did I need DeWalt? No. But the enjoyment of using a quality tool like this makes it worth the investment for me. Plus I know it’ll have resale value if the hobby is short-lived!
The saw feels absolutely bullet proof and has a good range of features. There’s nothing I feel it is missing, as a beginner, anyway. The fact it is a sliding saw really helps give a bit more width to the cuts. I think for a beginner the slightly smaller blade which can slide is a good balance – it stops it feeling overwhelming/scary! It cut through a series of 4×2 planks like butter and the dust extraction port is surprisingly effective, even if I’ve not got it connected to anything.
My only criticism is that the calibration was a bit off out of the box, with cuts not being right angles. I don’t know how hard this is to set up in the factory, or if it loses it during shipping, but not having the gear to calibrate it at home is a bit of a pain. Through a combination of a speed square and a bit of trial and error, I think I got there though. It’s certainly good enough for my purposes now.
My only other observation is that you really should use ear protection with this. I know it always says so in the manual, but I thought I’d be ok cutting outside. Well after a day of chopping for my first chair I had a night of ringing in my ears. It was short lived though – I bought some ear defenders the next day and no problems since!
All in, I highly recommend this as a beginners saw, even though cheaper makes are out there. I can’t comment for more advanced or professional use.
My husband loves this saw. Easy to use and has angle guide and settings. Well used item.
Upgraded to this from a cheap 60 saw and is well worth it. Accurate and easy to setup.
The main reason I purchased this saw was due to the design, specifically the lack of slide rails sticking out of the back. Great in small work areas.
I’m not a particularly practical person when it comes to doing stuff with wood but I needed to make a frame to box in a new cistern and bought this because I wanted a sliding mitre saw. I’ve done things like this before and always ended up with something a bit ‘rustic’. Now they say a bad workman blames his tools but I’d argue then when you have decent tools it makes it much, much easier for a bad workman (like me) to do a decent job. I’ve just built another structure to raise a water feature on the garden off the ground. What would have taken me 2 weekends of swearing, crying and trips to casualty has just been completed in about an hour. The result is millimetre perfect. The top of the frame had to sit inside a recess on the bottom of the water feature and it does that perfectly. I can only attribute this to the quality of this saw because I’ve never achieved this before.
When I built the box to hide the cistern, I also used this to cut the panels. Luckily they were 60cm wide so I used the slide to cut half way through, turned the panel round and did the same in the other direction so I was cutting from the middle to the edge. I took it very slowly, used electrical tape where I was cutting and there is almost no sign of any chips to the covering. And this is a blade that came with the saw with big old teeth on.
There’s a really neat light that is above the blade. This casts the the shadow of the blade onto what you’re cutting which makes it very easy to line things up.
All in all, this is definitely one of the best purchases I’ve made in terms of tools.
Love this saw very Accurate and very clean cut and the shadow line is a really good feature can’t fault i
I bought this to replace a evolution rage 3, while the rage 3 was good for general use, I found it was rubbish at cutting mitres in solid oak as the blade turns to slow. I bought this dewalt with shadow line, with prime it arrived next day, it was accurate and true out of the box. The shadow line is a rather simple idea but is bang on the money accurate. In my opinion it is far better than the laser guide lines as the shadow line casts a light on the blade which in turn casts a shadow of th blade onto the work piece. This means you can set your marked cut line either side of the blade with high accuracy. The cut of the supplied blade is very good to, it could probably be better with a blade with more teeth but is fine for what I need it for at the moment. The mitre scales are accurate and is a brilliant little saw for the money. The sliding part of the mitre saw feels a little stiff but I think that’s better as in the newer rage 3 machines they glide really easily and it’s too easy for the saw to run over the material and come towards the user. This dewalt however doesn’t do that as it’s a bit stiffer. Overall and excellent saw for the money which I would definitely buy again.
Saw needed to be set up in every respect.
Now does the job.
Solidly built from a reputable company. You’ll not be disappointed with its abilities and accuracy.
Great piece of kit, handles tough cuts really well and the shadow line is great for accuracy. Instructions are poor but the saw is easy to figure out. A great addition to my Dewalt collection and surprisingly lightweight for a bench saw. Would definitely recommend to others
Great saw and easy to use but let down by weak clamp which was broken on arrival. The clamp looks flimsy so expect it would just break again.
I used this product today, I found after a couple days of cuts I got used to the way it operates. Handle and switch once figured out are good. I have never operated any saw like this before so delighted with my choice and looking forward to using again.
Nice enough chop saw. Has a quality feel to it. Angle setting is fairly precise.
I changed the blade to one with more teeth as the supplied blade gives too rough a finish for precision work such as cornice and pelmet mitre angled cuts.
Very accurate straight out of the box. Yes I did check the saw carefully. The clever shadow guide to where the blade will cut works very well indoors, but not so well in strong sunlight. The supplied blade gives a smooth cut in both hard and softwood.
Overall very pleased with the saw it feels solid in use inspiring confidence in its accuracy.
I bought for DIY, and its possible the best power tool I have. My first chop saw – should have bought this ages ago.
A great wee saw. Ideal for the DIY in the garden. I bought it to do a large deck area. Did the job with no issues.
Needs a little calibration but once done. It’s a cracker!
DeWalt is a star of the power tool market obviously and this mitre saw is an excellent example of why. I can’t really recommend this enough. I had to give 3 stars in terms of it being lightweight because obviously it isn’t (no mitre saw is) but it isn’t especially heavy either. I wanted to clarify my rating there. If you’re wanting something very portable then a large, sliding mitre saw like this isn’t suitable. I’ve taken this saw out a few times already though without any issues.
The saw was perfect straight out of the box. Really accurate and although not perfect the dust extraction was much better than all other mitre saws ive used. The shadowlight though did stop working a few days after i got it.im not sure why and its really annoyed me. The saw still works perfect and that. Just the light will not activate now. And i am unsure how to fix that.
I am a Carpenter. I have a large Makita mitre saw for roofing. This is ideal for anything in it’s cutting range and the ‘Shadow Gap’ way of marking is not a gimik, knocks spots off a laser.
It’s a brilliant piece of kit, I’ve found it to be very accurate with the cuts, great finish. What’s good is that it is light weight and easily portable. I like the amount of movement you can get on it, the light that shines down over the blade is very accurate to where the cut will be. Would highly recommend this mitre saw, really pleased with it.
This is great not to big or small great for 2nd fix with a fine blade packs away nice and neat very happy with the saw
Nicely built and compact. Especially like the way the slide integrates into the motor housing to save space, and the clever light for aligning the blade. The carry handles are also a boon. Only downside is the slightly awkward handle for releasing the blade safety cover and switching on the light, which I find tends to stick a little. Nevertheless, it cuts cleanly and accurately and that’s what really matters.
Great delivery and in perfect condition. Great buy and was fantastic as I had so much cutting to be done. I also got the Dewalt stand to go with it and that made it even better.
I’m a DeWalt fan. Don’t go cheap. This feels solid, easy to operate and neat cut. The ‘light’ line ensures a cut where you want it. works well even in sunlight.
Bought this as an upgrade to a larger but lower quality mitre saw and I’m so glad I did. Very clean, accurate cuts. Cut some 100×60 oak like butter with perfect, unburnt ends.
Pros: Easy to set up, very accurate, no noticeable play. XPS shadow line is brilliant for precise cuts. Dust extraction works effectively if you can find the right adapter (I just taped my vacuum hose on!). Light, compact and easily portable.
Limitations (this is nitpickicking really): No depth/trench cut stop, dust extraction spout catches on deeper timber (although it’s rubber so bends out the way easily), XPS guide line can be hard to see in bright sun, blade guard makes blade change a bit awkward but no big deal.
Blade supplied was 30T – might want to think about getting a 48T or 60T blade for finer cuts.
Top bit of kit. I already have a big makita comb crosscut and wanted something for on site. Lightweight and powerful. The lighting system is accurate and very handy for 2nd fix. Good luck with the registration process. Its so hidden i had to ring dewalt and see where the unique registration number was.. other than that. Top machine
Great bit of kit. Easy to set up with accurate, clean cuts.
Does what it’s designed to do very well. Have used all of its features and they all work as described. The lighting/shadowing of the saw blade cut line works well when being used inside but is not so effective in bright sunshine.
I have used this saw extensively over a couple of months and have been extremely impressed. Before purchasing this, I made the mistake of buying a cheap saw from Screwfix. The saw very poorly built, difficult to cut accurately and the blade left a rough finish. The complete opposite of the Dewalt. The XPS light shadow is brilliant and it makes cutting a marked line accurately very easy. It’s miles better than the laser marker fitted to cheap saws. The Dewalt is accurate out of the box and did not require any adjustment or calibration. If you looking for a well made, reliable and accurate saw then this is for you.
I bought the previous model a DWS773 but thought I would leave a review on this model as I am so impressed with mine. Obviously the 773 lacks the XPS. I wanted to by a Makita LS0714 mitre saw but could not justify the extra cost.
This saw was accurate out of the box. No messing around, the cuts were great. I fitted a 80 t blade for fine work. I fitted the saw to a Titan saw stand and its nice to use. Lacking the dust collection bag I decided to make a cyclone dust extractor and that works well with the saw. Hardly anything to pick up after, just a small amount of saw dust on the saw base. Plus I can use it inside the house now.
The lack of trench cutting may be a draw back and it is something that I will miss having but I can get around this using other equipment. Everything about the saw feels nice, it feels tight and solid unlike the home use saws that you can buy from DIY stores.
This saw is light, portable and easy to move around. The foot print is small when stored. Great for in and out of a van.
No meaningful instructions managed to figure it out thanks to Youtube and some Russian Videos. That said for cutting and if you are a handyman like me brilliant!
Bought this because I was laying a laminate floor, this saw has made very light work of the job, can’t comment on the alignment light as I was working outside in the sun. Despite that every cut was accurate and clean. The manual is next to useless as there is no text of any use but the saw did come perfectly calibrated.
Just received mine today. First impressions are excellent, with the usual Dewalt solidity and quality. I chose this model as an entry into the XPS system, hearing how good it was. Again early indications would lead me to think I chose well. I did consider one of the cordeless versions, but had read that they can sometimes struggle a bit with larger sections of timber such as 6 x 2 etc. This isn’t my first bit of Dewalt kit, and I doubt it won’t be my last either. Good stuff Dewalt……..
After now using the DWS774 a few times, my initial impressions have only been reinforced. Excellent accuracy straight out of the box, with a really clean cut. I really like the shadowlight feature, and prefer it over a lazer which can be knocked out of line. Very impressed indeed for a saw towards the bottom end of Dewalt’s range.
Very impressed with this mitre saw. There is no play whatsoever – mitre indentations, fully extended saw on guide rails – it just feels rock solid. I measures all angles and out of the box, it’s very well aligned. I didn’t need to adjust anything. It’s also rather quiet for a mitre saw and seems to have some degree of soft start – the saw takes about 2 seconds to fully power up and roughly 10 seconds to come to a stop. The cable of the saw measures 1.8m, which is plenty for me.
The very best feature of the saw, though, is the XPS LED lighting which casts a shadow on the work piece. It gets activated by fully pressing down the long button on the front of the handle which first slides the saw blade guard upwards, then presses a button that is located just underneath the handle. This button activates the XPS light. You can therefore precisely align your work piece even before starting the saw and you see the actual kerf of the blade. In fact, it’s so precise, you see each individual saw tooth! Forget lasers, this can never go out of alignment and always matches your actual saw blade kerf.
I am very impressed with this saw, solid engineering. The only two downsides to the saw are the missing depth stop (caused by the internal rails – I gladly trade in the depth stop for the more compact device and use a router instead when it comes to cutting dados) and the “picture book manual”. I recommend downloading a manual for one of the other DeWalt mitre saws, e.g. the DWS 777, which have pictures and text. A lot of what’s described in there can be transferred to this saw.
But these two downsides were not enough to deduct any points, and the compact size, extremely high build quality, and the XPS feature together with the great prize warrant five stars. Highly recommended and another solid tool by DeWalt.
This review is after one day of operation and for the 774 model with XPS and not for the 773 without XPS. The specifications for both are near identical, apart from XPS. The XPS function is a light that casts a very narrow shadow of the blade to show exactly where it will cut and works very well. Slightly pressing the blade trigger, with the safety interlock in either the on or off position, switches on the light.
Supplied is a spanner for the blade and a 2 size hex key for some of the (very minor) assembly and adjustment. My saw wasn’t cutting square out-of-the-box. Adjustment for this was easy but required a SMALL set square and a T20 torx bit, preferably in a ratchet driver to give leverage as the adjustment screws were very tight.
The unit gives the appearance/feeling of being sturdy and well built. Once set up operation was smooth and the cut accurate. It comes with a 216mm 30 tooth blade which gives minimal breakout at the back edge of a cut in stud wall timber. I will fit a blade with more teeth. The unit is 11kg so needs a fairly study work table, or equivalent, to stand on for ease of use.
Negative point
Truly awful instruction book. At the back of the book is some safety related text but most of the manual is pictures. The first page indicates you should be wearing a wet-suit, be blindfolded and you should never plug the equipment into the mains nor operate it if carrying a teddy bear. In some places it doesn’t get much better and an understanding of the pictures may only come with a bit of playing around with the equipment – with it unplugged. (no points removed for manual as the saw works well)
Great compact saw, really accurate without any set up required. Its worth paying a little bit more for the xps shadow feature. The internal rail system is also a great feature that means you can use it in a smaller space than you could with saws that have rails coming out of the back. This was one of the main reasons I bought it because i have a very small workshop. The only thing i would like to have on it is a depth stop for making partial depth cuts.
Excellent product does what it says on the tin very happy
This is a seriously impressive piece of kit! I went for this model as it has the XPS system and am SO glad I did. The XPS system shines a light onto the workpiece and the shadow created by the blade shows you EXACTLY where it will cut. You can even see the shadow of the individual teeth allowing for perfect cut positioning and still perfect after changing blades. The dust collection adaptor is not included, is VERY expensive and hard to find so I use a compression waste fitting which works fine.
Well made mitre saw, I am quite impressed with the build quality for a lower priced saw.
3 Year warranty by registering the saw on Dewalts web site, this was very easy to do.
Only negative was the set up instructions, must be honest I didn’t quite understand them but the saw from the box was extremely accurate.
Prime delivery next day excellent!
Excellent piece of kit. Shadow line far better that laser line that can move.
Works well with or without the associated bench (extra). Worth paying for pro-grade stuff.
A really excellent piece of kit. Very solidly build but still compact – fits in a 60×60 storage box. No trenching facility but otherwise excellent as a go-to tool for home DIY use.
Package arrived quickly and good condition. Easy assembly with necessary tools included (handy storage for them as well in the handles). Saw was cutting accurately out of the box. The XPS shadow line is great, no excuse for cutting the wrong side of markings now! XPS light is really the biggest distinction in this saw, can buy cheaper saws with similar capacities but they don’t quite tick all the boxes this one does. Lasers are not as good as they can be knocked out of alignment, don’t give side/width of saw cut etc. Saw is a good size for domestic work, not too heavy to cart around, stores relatively small, all in all I think it is a winner for Dewalt.
