It’s an axe. I like it. Sturdy and you feel secure with it. Nothing rattling.

When you get one of these you almost dont want to use it due to how nice they look. But of course it’s meant to be used… been using mine for camping. Works great for splitting up some small camp logs, use the back side for setting tent pegs. Fits into my utility bag. The sheath helps keep the edge sharp when in storage and transit. Not had a spot of rust yet, even after leaving the canvas bag it was stored in out during a massive storm while camping.

Great quality. Very good design. Chops great and the sharp edge from the factory made chipping kindling a breeze. Grandfather had one for years and now have my own. I am sure this will be around along time as well.

My husband loved the sharpness and handling of this axe to chop out some tree roots in our yard. It is very well made and not too heavy but not featherweight either.

Wonderful tool. Only complaint is weight. Wish it were heavier. Will be a great addition to my camp gear.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis hatchet meets my expectations for a rugged hand tool. I am using it along with other tools to improve the forest on my land, and find it very useful when clearing out the tangle of flammable biomass consisting of underbrush, roots in the ground, and larger vines. It’s relatively light weight allows a lot of work to get done before my hand needs a break.

For those who have trouble getting the label goop off, trouble no more: it comes of easily with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol.

Based on the number of times it got slammed in the dirt while I was hacking off roots, the blade holds an edge well. It also sharpens easily to razor sharp. Good it has a cover!

I split a few chunks of firewood into kindling; the hatchet worked well enough for that. Although it is too hot right now, when I camp in the winter it should handle park firewood, which always seems to lack kindling.

Over all, for anyone eyeing a camping hatchet it is a great value.

I got this as a gift for my boyfriend. It took him awhile to figure out how to use it well, but he loves looking all mountain man and wearing it around his belt loop when camping. We sharpened the blade right after purchase and sanded off the wonky varnish on the leather handle and applied leather treatment to it. So far its been holding up well the past two months. Just make sure to sharpen when needed.

If you want a decent performer without the giant price then this is a good choice. I have had it for a while. You will need to touch up the edge more often. It is a good worker not great. Can’t expect a miracle from a small axe after all. Handle feels great in the hand.

  15. JamaalC55qiwx says:

Works well. A little heavier than I expected, but you need that weight for chopping. Compact enough to fit in our camping boxes. It’s really a quality product and came with the cover for the blade.

Comes already sharpened, ready to roll. Didn’t get a chance to use it on my last camping trip other than the back to hammer in tent spikes. The handle is pretty hard, I imagine that’ll hurt after splitting logs for a while.

I’m sure this little axe is going to last me the rest of my life. This isn’t the first Estwing I’ve owned. The edge came scraped and dinged, I don’t know how this ever passed through Quality Control. Because I know this axe will last me forever, I just sucked it up and cleaned up the edge damage with a stone, but the large scrape is still there. The nylon sheath isn’t as terrible as people are saying…I do prefer leather, but this will do. Also, a little elbow grease and vineger will get those pesky stickers off in no time, just a minor annoyance.

The axe itself is fine. The protective cover is designed to drive you crazy trying to figure out how to get it off until you realize you have to slide the axe off inversely by pushing it entirely out of the cover in the reverse direction rather than just pulling the cover off which you can’t do at all. One extra snap on the cover would have made it so much easier to undo.

Golden Review Award: 218 From Our UsersGreat little hatchet, but come on manufacturer. Get rid of the stupid sticker on it that takes 15 minutes to remove and then on top of that I need to get goo gone or some other product just to make it so the handle isn’t all sticky with crap! needed? Sticker? Right on the hatchet. I may be the first to write about it, but I know I am not the first person to get the hatchet and start to use it, remove the sticker….which of course does not come off in one piece, but 50 and need to use your nail to scratch it off….only to further waste time scrubbing handle to get it to be usable, without sticky **** on the handle. Piss poor planning by you people. fix it. a small little piece of plastic like those used on clothes with a warning label…does the job, comes off with a snap, and no mess. :/ Think!

As for the hatchet. solid. works. does what it is supposed to….other than getting sticky crap on your hands. size is adequate. good balance. good design. cuts wood. sheath is nice and easy to store the hatchet safely while still being able to use the other side as a hammer for tent stakes or whatever. Recommend buying this (and a bottle of goo gone) so you can enjoy this, hassle, and sticky-crud-on your-hand, free.

The hatchet Amazon sent me seems fine although the blade edge is almost totally unsharpened. That okay, I can sharpen it myself. The fit and finish of the hatchet is excellent. No blemishes. My problem is the hatchet is very small. I can’t tell if they sent me the 12 in. or the 14 in. size hatchet. I ordered the 14 in. The hatchets are remarkably similar in size. Oh well, it’s too much trouble to return so I got a nice (and cheap) small hatchet. Nylon sheath.

I found it to be plenty sharp right out of the box, but could probably do with a finer edge. I can understand why it would be shipped as it is. The stickers were indeed a bugger to remove – I used a LOT of WD40 to loosen them up and it still took a lot of elbow grease. Not a fan of the sheath – wish it were leather. All in all, it’s exactly what I needed and it now resides in my horse trailer.

Full tang stainless steel construction. Great leather disc grip with enough flare to keep it in my hand. Small enough to tuck away in a backpack for camping or bugout. Comes quite well pre-sharpened, with a very nice 1000 denier cordura cover to keep the edge safe and keep the rest of your gear from getting cut. I expect to get many years of good service from this hatchet. Slightly heavier than the plastic handled camp hatchets, but that gives more momentum to the swing for cutting firewood, making improvised tent stakes etc. Wide solid hammerhead on the back is not covered by the cordura blade cover, so you can use it safely as a hammer to get stakes in cold or rocky ground when setting up your tent. Will be a constant companion to my scout gear for monthly campouts.

How can you go wrong with Estwing? I followed another reviewer’s recommedation and sanded the polyurethane coating off of the handle with 100 grit sandpaper then applied Fiebings neatsfoot oil compound to the exposed leather to ensure that it holds up to being exposed to moisture. Worked perfect and the handle is nice and smooth. Used honing oil and honing puck to put a wicked sharp edge on it. I’m sure it will last for years. Very happy with the product and the price.

Just purchased this estwing Hatchet after reading great reviews in a book. I have to say the balance feels nice and so does the weight but the poor workmanship is what really caught my attention, at the bottom of the blade there’s a little chip in this Hatchet and it has never been used, at the very bottom where the ID tag is has poor grinding marks also at the top of the grip whoever was grinding this hit the leather and lacquer and never covered it back up. Just wanted people to know maybe they’ve lost the touch of the high quality standards I heard they had.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is my first ax. Feels very handy in hand, the balance is good too. It’s very sharp when arrived, I chopped down a 2-inches diameter tree with one single swing. I didn’t say it’s like butter, but it’s very easy. Cut a 3~4 inch birch in 4 swings. Like it!

Good hatchet. I have used the crap out of mine and no issues with it. Fairly easy to sharpen and I like the sheath it came with. Only complaint would be the grip, it gets slick easily with any liquid such as sweat or rain, making it hard to hang on to when doing heavy chopping.

Worked removing bark around two large maple trees 48″ DIA. 12″ inches wide removed around trees for two man cross cut saw. This hatchet stayed sharp, surprisingly light but enough weight to go through wood and bark. This is a must have for hikers, back packers, camping, and back yard activity’s. Would highly recommend this product!

This is a classic hatchet and an excellent value at $35. It is a solid piece of steel with a leather wrapped handle. Don’t worry about breaking this thing because it is as tuff as nails. I have actually chopped down a tree that was eight inches in diameter and it did the job well. This is perfect for camping or hiking or just chopping kindling.

  63. Anonymous says:

This is a solid, attractive hatchet that feels good in the hand and does a good job cutting into small trees and logs. The blade didn’t come quite as sharp as I’d like, but a few passes on a sharpening stone fixed that quickly enough. The handle might be a bit slick but works fine as long as your hands aren’t wet. I might take the suggestion of another reviewer and sand off the lacquer to rough up the leather and then treat it with neatsfoot oil. My one complaint is the sheath. While it’s pretty sturdy nylon and works fine for what it is, I don’t really like that you have to pass the handle of the hatchet through the sheath. It’s a bit of a hassle, and I’d much prefer if the sheath could be removed from the top of the axe.

Overall, great design. Nice weight. Nice length. The grip was really well designed and feels good in the hand. It also has good balance overall (not too top heavy).

Would have given 5-stars, except that the blade edge had a small chip in it! And being that it was shipped in the sheath, this means that the chip somehow passed through quality inspection and still got sent to the customer. Disappointing…

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersJust know that the way it tapers makes it easy to get stuck into a really hard piece of wood your splitting, but a hammer fixes that quick. A bit awkward with the weight when using for fine shaving but I have no problems whatsoever. Only took me 5 minutes to get a nice sharpen on it, came fairly sharp anyways. I love it to be honest, I got tired of needing to put the head back on my other hatchet, this one is a solid single piece, it does the job and I feel confident in its performance and durability. I know i can rely on it and that’s what matters.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe steel is decent and sharpens easily. I’ve done oak with mine and never had any chipping or even rolling that couldn’t be brought back to shaving sharp within a couple minutes. The hammer face is also well tempered, haven’t had any mushrooming or chipping (despite my best efforts). There is some vibration that travels down the handle but what are you expecting from a metal-hafted handaxe? If you’re expecting perfection, go shell out >$125 for a Granfors Bruks. This is something for if you don’t want to spend a lot of money but still need it to perform.

Love this hatchet!! First, it’s MADE IN USA. FYI, I just returned the Schrade 10 – it’s a made in China piece of crap with a sheath that EASILY allows the blade to slip out. Very dangerous item.

But this ESTWING is a FANTASTIC little axe. Superb quality, CAN BE USED as hammer for tent stakes, etc., perfect leather handle with great balance.

The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the nylon sheath broke at the rivet after only one outing. The axe itself works well and has seemed to keep it’s sharpness. Pretty disappointed in the sheath breaking so easily but can’t complain about the axe itself which is the important thing here.

This is a great handaxe. I’ve used it several times now to split (already split) logs into smaller pieces for fires inside the home. Very well balanced and well made. I have put a hurting on this thing several times and it comes out shining.

I was amazed at the quick shipment of this tool. It was packaged well and arrived in perfect condition. It is certainly a quality product and will be used shortly.

I did spend a little time removing the pesky stickers on the shafts and handle. After doing so, I gave it a light coating of oil to help prevent rust. I would order again and may present one as a gift. Buy one!

It took a long time to get this, but it was worth the wait. This is a beautiful ax and I know he will love it just to look at even if he never gets a chance to use it.

Very well made and has a good balance. This should last a lifetime. I bought this to replace a 40 year old wood handled hatchet that had more wedges and nails driven into it to keep the head from flying off. Wise choice.

Very solid tool. Came sharp enough out of the box. Love that the it is a full tang. May eventually change the handle wrap but it’s fine for now. Was perfect for our camping trip. Great hatchet that I expect to last for a very long time.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this ahead of a camping trip to break down large pieces of firewood. It worked for that, and is equally good at various other tasks.

Some reviews say the steel is softer than it should be, and that’s fair. I didn’t have any issues with it, but it’s definitely not as hard as some other metals (I don’t think it’s drop-forged or uses any other method to strengthen it). My guess is that’s to keep weight down.

I did hack up a manzanita branch without issue, so it’s not as if the metal is TOO soft — you just have to know how to use it.

The handle is fantastic, and it’s well balanced. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase. I’d like a leather sheath rather than the nylon one it comes with, but that’s nit-picking.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI love this hatchet. The leather handle has held up well for me so far…what a nice, classic look it has, too. I’ve sharpened it several times and it holds an edge nicely. I have split quite a lot of kindling with it (mostly ash, also hemlock for outdoor use). I was kind of hoping for the old USA-made leather sheath, but the nylon one is very solid. As a former Boy Scout and adult Scouter, I am pleased as I can be with this item. Never handle a tool like this without training, and always handle it carefully and safely. (Sorry, I had to add that!)

What an awesome hatchet, can do small jobs flawlessly and big jobs with a little elbow grease. Gets extra sharp and stays that way for a while. The sheath it comes with is a little awkward to use though.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI’ve had this for half a year and I feel ready to give an honest review after having used it on a handful of backpacking and canoe trips. I wasn’t smitten with the look of this hatchet as I like the more classic look of wooden handled ones but the overwhelming number of positive reviews (and the price) lead me to finally decide on purchasing it. When I got it in the mail I still wasn’t that impressed. Firstly, the edge was obviously ground too far to one side. I’m certainly no expert and reshaping an axe edge but I spent about two hours with a file and at least ended up with something that looked symmetrical. Nextly, I went on to sanding off the varnish, as another reviewer had suggested, and oiling all the leather. I used coconut oil. Time will tell if the coconut oil was a good idea. I really do think getting off the varnish is a necessity because that leather is bone dry. As the reviewer had noted, once that varnish cracks it seems likely that leather will soak up water and slowly end up rotting. However, I don’t count either the reshaping or the sanding as a con. It is the lack of nice finishes that allow it to be sold so cheaply and it is enjoyable to invest a bit of time into your tools. Before really using it much I contemplated selling it. Many suggest that the Husqvarna hatchet is a good inexpensive beginner hatchet and I contemplated getting that one instead. However, I ended up falling in love with it on the third use. I split sectioned piece of stump that I don’t think I really should have been able to with a hatchet this small. The narrow cheeks, which some have noted as a bad design, meant that, when I struck the log the axe buried really deeply and wedged itself in there. Since it was wedged so tightly I flipped it over and pounded (really really pounded) another stump with the poll of the hatchet. It split perfectly. My understanding is that with conventional wood handled axes this is a bad idea because it will eventually spread the eye and loosen the handle. Not a problem with this one. Pound as much as you like. In another instance my dad batoned a tough piece of wood with this hatchet by pounding the poll with a claw hammer. Again, I believe this a big no no for a wood handled axe – at least one you cared enough to keep for any length of time. So in the end, yes, i love it. The pure unbreakable robustness won me over. Like many others have noted, this is a tool that will likely serve me well for life. Made in the U.S. The 50-ish dollars I paid for is a steal in my opinion. I would caution any beginners to do some axe safety research before going out and taking it for a spin though. There are certainly safer ways to use a short handled axe like this one.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI got this to accompany me on a camping trip. It’s one of the nicest hatchets I’ve ever used. With wooden and plastic handles I often had the problem of the head flying off or worse yet the plastic shattering/splintering in my hands. The solid metal constructions means that I don’t have to worry about that at all. It also means the handle is narrower than most wooden ones so I find it very easy to hold. I found cutting through branches and splitting firewood to be quite easy.

It’s balanced well, with the center of gravity being about midway between the top of the leather handle and the bottom of the head. In terms of size I measured it to be 13in tall with the head is 5in from edge to back and 3in at it’s “tallest” at the edge. The 14in measurement I think comes from measuring it diagonally from the longest part of the handle to the top tip of the blade (bottom left to top right in the picture).

The leather sheath seems solidly constructed (albeit in Taiwan) with a belt loop and button clasp at the top. The sheath isn’t what I’d call “ambidextrous” in that if you want to attach it to your belt to have the hatchet positioned with the edge facing AWAY from you (pointing forward) when you pull it out it has to be on your left side. When it’s on your ride side the edge points behind you. And no you can’t simply flip the sheath upside down, the axe won’t fit in that way without also being upside down. It still works well but as a right handed person I’d prefer it to be the other way, not a deal breaker however and I like the extra protection it lends to both the blade and my fingers.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI probably will never again touch it once my husband receives it as his birthday gift, but I CAN say that it is a thing of beauty and comes with a very nice leather axe head case. It was produced by an old company which takes pride in its workmanship. I did my research, as you will probably do too, and found their products to be highly regarded. I am very pleased to be gifting this to my husband.

Just wanted to add a note saying my husband absolutely loved his birthday gift. I’m so glad I discovered and purchased it for him. He has shown it to family and friends while extolling its virtues to the nth degree. He’s a very happy camper. What does he plan to use it for? I’m not sure, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s sturdy, and hefty for such a small ax. It’s handle is beautiful and well made. The leather case is lovely. A man couldn’t ask for anything more.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersMy dad and grandpa both had one of these hatchets when I was growing up. I just thought a hatchet was a hatchet because that’s all I knew. I grew up, they died, and I didn’t get either hatchet because I didn’t think there was anything special about them. So over the years I’ve purchased various hatchets and they all, each and everyone one of them, sucked. I had no idea of the brand of those hatchets. My wife was going through a women’s magazine, of all things, and said something about a hatchet the author was raving about and she showed me a photo. That was the hatchet I’d spent whacking firewood and stumps and everything I could find to hit without getting into trouble during my childhood. I went directly to the amazon.com and ordered two (one for me and one for my son). Then I ordered another for my eldest grandson. When I received it, I took it out and split kindling for that night’s fire–THE BEST HATCHET I HAVE EVER OWNED. Period. Done. No more talk. If you want a hatchet that you can depend upon and the works like one should, buy this one. In fact, buy two.
