It’s an axe. I like it. Sturdy and you feel secure with it. Nothing rattling.
My dad had one back in 1974 and still has it. I had to get one because they last forever!
When you get one of these you almost dont want to use it due to how nice they look. But of course it’s meant to be used… been using mine for camping. Works great for splitting up some small camp logs, use the back side for setting tent pegs. Fits into my utility bag. The sheath helps keep the edge sharp when in storage and transit. Not had a spot of rust yet, even after leaving the canvas bag it was stored in out during a massive storm while camping.
That is about all you need to say. You won’t be disappointed with this little American made camping axe.
Great quality. Very good design. Chops great and the sharp edge from the factory made chipping kindling a breeze. Grandfather had one for years and now have my own. I am sure this will be around along time as well.
I bought this for my boyfriend for our camping trips, he loves it! It keeps a very sharp edge and the handle is finely crafted.
Very durable, very sharp very useful. When I was a kid, I worked a week to Buy one of these. That was a lot of money then. I made .25cent per hour.
My husband loved the sharpness and handling of this axe to chop out some tree roots in our yard. It is very well made and not too heavy but not featherweight either.
Wonderful tool. Only complaint is weight. Wish it were heavier. Will be a great addition to my camp gear.
For those who have trouble getting the label goop off, trouble no more: it comes of easily with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol.
Based on the number of times it got slammed in the dirt while I was hacking off roots, the blade holds an edge well. It also sharpens easily to razor sharp. Good it has a cover!
I split a few chunks of firewood into kindling; the hatchet worked well enough for that. Although it is too hot right now, when I camp in the winter it should handle park firewood, which always seems to lack kindling.
Over all, for anyone eyeing a camping hatchet it is a great value.
I got this as a gift for my boyfriend. It took him awhile to figure out how to use it well, but he loves looking all mountain man and wearing it around his belt loop when camping. We sharpened the blade right after purchase and sanded off the wonky varnish on the leather handle and applied leather treatment to it. So far its been holding up well the past two months. Just make sure to sharpen when needed.
If you want a decent performer without the giant price then this is a good choice. I have had it for a while. You will need to touch up the edge more often. It is a good worker not great. Can’t expect a miracle from a small axe after all. Handle feels great in the hand.
Works well. A little heavier than I expected, but you need that weight for chopping. Compact enough to fit in our camping boxes. It’s really a quality product and came with the cover for the blade.
Had to clean some of the glue around the handle but other than that it’s a pretty solid hatchet/axe.
Bought a second one of the same hatchet for my son. Great gear. Money well spent. There are lot of reviews about this hatchet. This piece of camping equipment,IMO deserves better rating. Made in USA made it that much better.
Comes already sharpened, ready to roll. Didn’t get a chance to use it on my last camping trip other than the back to hammer in tent spikes. The handle is pretty hard, I imagine that’ll hurt after splitting logs for a while.
Sehr zu empfehlen .

I’m sure this little axe is going to last me the rest of my life. This isn’t the first Estwing I’ve owned. The edge came scraped and dinged, I don’t know how this ever passed through Quality Control. Because I know this axe will last me forever, I just sucked it up and cleaned up the edge damage with a stone, but the large scrape is still there. The nylon sheath isn’t as terrible as people are saying…I do prefer leather, but this will do. Also, a little elbow grease and vineger will get those pesky stickers off in no time, just a minor annoyance.
works great. Is pretty durable. Used it to split pieces of wood for starting and to hammer steaks into the ground for our dogs.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this hatchet. Took it camping and we must have split a half cord of wood with it and the edge held beautifully! I would lightly sand the handle for grip though.
he quality was nice just too small it is not enough for my yard work and the price too high
The axe itself is fine. The protective cover is designed to drive you crazy trying to figure out how to get it off until you realize you have to slide the axe off inversely by pushing it entirely out of the cover in the reverse direction rather than just pulling the cover off which you can’t do at all. One extra snap on the cover would have made it so much easier to undo.
Cuts through wood with ease. Took me no time to cut through a 12 inch trunk. Seems strong and durable. Seemed like the handle could be slippery but it’s not. Stays in the hand good. You can’t beat this hatchet!
Fits good in the hand. Nice sharp edge. Good craftsmanship. Feels like it will last forever. Beautiful finished leather handle-smooth
As for the hatchet. solid. works. does what it is supposed to….other than getting sticky crap on your hands. size is adequate. good balance. good design. cuts wood. sheath is nice and easy to store the hatchet safely while still being able to use the other side as a hammer for tent stakes or whatever. Recommend buying this (and a bottle of goo gone) so you can enjoy this, hassle, and sticky-crud-on your-hand, free.
I have only been using it for a few days, but it chops down small trees and processes the wood quite easily. It seems really durable, but it does rust a bit if your not careful.
The hatchet Amazon sent me seems fine although the blade edge is almost totally unsharpened. That okay, I can sharpen it myself. The fit and finish of the hatchet is excellent. No blemishes. My problem is the hatchet is very small. I can’t tell if they sent me the 12 in. or the 14 in. size hatchet. I ordered the 14 in. The hatchets are remarkably similar in size. Oh well, it’s too much trouble to return so I got a nice (and cheap) small hatchet. Nylon sheath.
Beautiful and functional, Estwing has been making axes and other tools in the USA since 1923. This was a gift for me and ladies let me tell you, you can’t go wrong giving a guy a tool from Estwing! From the one piece design to the gorgeous stacked leather handle, it just doesn’t get much better than this!
Great axe. It came sharpened and ready to use. Unfortunately my wife saw it as I opened the box and immediately told me not to hack anything with it. It reminded me of my childhood when my mom told me the same thing with my very first axe. The handle is awesome and I’m sure I will love it if my wife ever lets me use the axe out in the wilderness.
Bought this for my son for christmas and he loves it! Perfect for camping and chopping wood for the fires. Fast delivery as well.
I found it to be plenty sharp right out of the box, but could probably do with a finer edge. I can understand why it would be shipped as it is. The stickers were indeed a bugger to remove – I used a LOT of WD40 to loosen them up and it still took a lot of elbow grease. Not a fan of the sheath – wish it were leather. All in all, it’s exactly what I needed and it now resides in my horse trailer.
Full tang stainless steel construction. Great leather disc grip with enough flare to keep it in my hand. Small enough to tuck away in a backpack for camping or bugout. Comes quite well pre-sharpened, with a very nice 1000 denier cordura cover to keep the edge safe and keep the rest of your gear from getting cut. I expect to get many years of good service from this hatchet. Slightly heavier than the plastic handled camp hatchets, but that gives more momentum to the swing for cutting firewood, making improvised tent stakes etc. Wide solid hammerhead on the back is not covered by the cordura blade cover, so you can use it safely as a hammer to get stakes in cold or rocky ground when setting up your tent. Will be a constant companion to my scout gear for monthly campouts.
would have been better if it came with a sharp edge
This hatchet keeps an good edge, and this is not a hard steel, and not to soft it’s just perfect it is good for a pro and beginners I can cut a tree the sizes of the blade and a inch thicke
Wasn’t happy about the cover not being the leather that they used to use, but it appears to be a little more functional with the canvas
Sticks into trees pretty good so I imagine it would stick successfully in a chest cavity as well! would recommend to a friend.
Small ax is a good size and split firewood into kindling surprisingly well after I put a nice edge on it. On the down side, it was WAY too much work to remove the annoying gummy adhesive residue left by the two factory stickers.
Nice little Axe. Needed a bit of sharpening but overall worth the money. Best of all is that is made out of one piece of steel.
Really like this thing but mine came with a couple of cosmetic flaws in the metal. I’m going to keep it but hopefully they’re not all like tha
Good axe! A little heavy for the size but you can tell it is very durable. I would have given it 5 stars if it was well sharpened from the factory. The sheath is a little weird but is great to protect the blade. Good for small projects and to have around
I love this hatchet. It feels great in the hand. The handle will never break, obviously. The workmanship is beautiful. I hit it with a diamond stone just because. The sheath is a plus. It has one belt loop that can also work with a molle clip. It’s a hatchet that you will hand down to your children.
I love this axe & wound up using right away after a birch tree fell into my driveway. It was great for the medium sized branches.
How can you go wrong with Estwing? I followed another reviewer’s recommedation and sanded the polyurethane coating off of the handle with 100 grit sandpaper then applied Fiebings neatsfoot oil compound to the exposed leather to ensure that it holds up to being exposed to moisture. Worked perfect and the handle is nice and smooth. Used honing oil and honing puck to put a wicked sharp edge on it. I’m sure it will last for years. Very happy with the product and the price.
Works great for intended purpose! I cook dinner, set the table, seat everyone and lay this out on the table before everyone eats and now they all say they love my cooking. Dinner is delicious every time now…not one complaint about my cooking yet!
The hand was a little uneven in it’s wrapping but overall I certainly can’t complain. Saw the same hatchet in a sorting goods store for $20 more!

Estwing E24a Sportsmans Axe – Leather Grip
de Estwing
Merci bien vous !
Alain Despres
Just purchased this estwing Hatchet after reading great reviews in a book. I have to say the balance feels nice and so does the weight but the poor workmanship is what really caught my attention, at the bottom of the blade there’s a little chip in this Hatchet and it has never been used, at the very bottom where the ID tag is has poor grinding marks also at the top of the grip whoever was grinding this hit the leather and lacquer and never covered it back up. Just wanted people to know maybe they’ve lost the touch of the high quality standards I heard they had.
wow love this! bought this for my boyfriend for christmas and wanted to keep it for myself! came sharp, great quality, no defects, feels great in the hand, very nice grip and is very sturdy. very impressed!
Classy looking, needed to be sharpened to do what I needed but hey, that’s what you need to do with these things so might as well get used to i
Good hatchet. I have used the crap out of mine and no issues with it. Fairly easy to sharpen and I like the sheath it came with. Only complaint would be the grip, it gets slick easily with any liquid such as sweat or rain, making it hard to hang on to when doing heavy chopping.
Worked removing bark around two large maple trees 48″ DIA. 12″ inches wide removed around trees for two man cross cut saw. This hatchet stayed sharp, surprisingly light but enough weight to go through wood and bark. This is a must have for hikers, back packers, camping, and back yard activity’s. Would highly recommend this product!
Great Balanced all one piece construction! Only gripe was that it arrived with some slight chips in the axe head and they also put sickers directly on the Axe which do not comeoff unless you use WD40 or Goo Gone.
This is a classic hatchet and an excellent value at $35. It is a solid piece of steel with a leather wrapped handle. Don’t worry about breaking this thing because it is as tuff as nails. I have actually chopped down a tree that was eight inches in diameter and it did the job well. This is perfect for camping or hiking or just chopping kindling.
This is a solid, attractive hatchet that feels good in the hand and does a good job cutting into small trees and logs. The blade didn’t come quite as sharp as I’d like, but a few passes on a sharpening stone fixed that quickly enough. The handle might be a bit slick but works fine as long as your hands aren’t wet. I might take the suggestion of another reviewer and sand off the lacquer to rough up the leather and then treat it with neatsfoot oil. My one complaint is the sheath. While it’s pretty sturdy nylon and works fine for what it is, I don’t really like that you have to pass the handle of the hatchet through the sheath. It’s a bit of a hassle, and I’d much prefer if the sheath could be removed from the top of the axe.
Great buy. One solid piece of steel-hard metal with a great grip. I’ve been meaning to buy a hatchet like this since my Boy Scout days. It’s perfect and razor sharp.
Overall, great design. Nice weight. Nice length. The grip was really well designed and feels good in the hand. It also has good balance overall (not too top heavy).
Would have given 5-stars, except that the blade edge had a small chip in it! And being that it was shipped in the sheath, this means that the chip somehow passed through quality inspection and still got sent to the customer. Disappointing…
Haven’t used it yet but I love the feel of it in my hand and I also like how well built it is. Love the fact that the handle and head are all one continuous piece so they’ll never come apart. Lookin forward to choppin small limbs with it for firewood. If there’s problems with it once I put it to use, I’ll update this review.
This is a very well made hatchet. Came super sharp. The only thing that made me upset is the amount of stickers on it when it came. They are the type of stickers that don’t come off easy and I had to use rubbing alcohol and a ton of elbow grease to get the sticker crud off.
solid build quality and came reasonably sharp. Like other reviews said it is best to remove the varnish from the handle and apply oil.
This axe is absolutely magnificent….. But the sheath they sent it in is absolute crap. It’s plastic and the buttons scratched up the surface of my axe. Why put such a horrible thing over such a well made product?? Axe made in USA but sheath made in Taiwan….lame.
This is a great hatchet for back country camping. I was able to carry it with me along long hikes and it was usefull for collecting wood and genseral bush craft.
After doing a lot of research, I got this hatchet. I love it except for one thing. It was pretty dull when I got it. Had to do some serious sharpening to make it a very effective hatchet. On the plus side, it’s some tough metal.
Its smaller than depicted, but a sturdy hatchet very sharp and good and solid for banging in tent stakes, and the small size can be an advantage when attaching ( carrying) on your pack but get some steel wool pads to get all pesky glue off from all the stickers placed on it. you can see one on the photo .
Love the hatchet but had a ding in the corner of the blade (amost looked like it had been dropped) and rub/scratch mark across the face. All things that will likely happen to it after a short use but was surprised the new one came like this.
This is a quality hand axe and look forward to chopping some trees in the yard.
Good weight for me and seems to be a real sound tool. This will go along
to my daughters or grandson. Good stuff, made in the USA—like that.
Love this hatchet!! First, it’s MADE IN USA. FYI, I just returned the Schrade 10 – it’s a made in China piece of crap with a sheath that EASILY allows the blade to slip out. Very dangerous item.
But this ESTWING is a FANTASTIC little axe. Superb quality, CAN BE USED as hammer for tent stakes, etc., perfect leather handle with great balance.
Thank you, Estwing! Very pleased with this.
The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the nylon sheath broke at the rivet after only one outing. The axe itself works well and has seemed to keep it’s sharpness. Pretty disappointed in the sheath breaking so easily but can’t complain about the axe itself which is the important thing here.
Made in the USA, sharp on arrival, and a great feeling handle. First trip I had it on, we discovered one of the older hatchets we had was also made by Estwing due to the shape and light markings left of the bottom of the handle.
This is a pretty good hatchet for the price! The blade cuts very well and the rear hammers very well! The only downside, a big downside, is that the handle doesn’t absorb ANY shock at all. Frankly, it hurts to use this!
Nice small axe for camping and using in the woods , one piece which I like , handle is just that , it will do me for what I need , mostly chopping wood for wood burning rocket stove, I’m not going on any long camping trips or going on the show ” Alone” just casual weekend camping trips , price was nice , thanks I received nothing for this review
This is a great handaxe. I’ve used it several times now to split (already split) logs into smaller pieces for fires inside the home. Very well balanced and well made. I have put a hurting on this thing several times and it comes out shining.
I was amazed at the quick shipment of this tool. It was packaged well and arrived in perfect condition. It is certainly a quality product and will be used shortly.
I did spend a little time removing the pesky stickers on the shafts and handle. After doing so, I gave it a light coating of oil to help prevent rust. I would order again and may present one as a gift. Buy one!
It took a long time to get this, but it was worth the wait. This is a beautiful ax and I know he will love it just to look at even if he never gets a chance to use it.
Very well made and has a good balance. This should last a lifetime. I bought this to replace a 40 year old wood handled hatchet that had more wedges and nails driven into it to keep the head from flying off. Wise choice.
Very solid tool. Came sharp enough out of the box. Love that the it is a full tang. May eventually change the handle wrap but it’s fine for now. Was perfect for our camping trip. Great hatchet that I expect to last for a very long time.
Some reviews say the steel is softer than it should be, and that’s fair. I didn’t have any issues with it, but it’s definitely not as hard as some other metals (I don’t think it’s drop-forged or uses any other method to strengthen it). My guess is that’s to keep weight down.
I did hack up a manzanita branch without issue, so it’s not as if the metal is TOO soft — you just have to know how to use it.
The handle is fantastic, and it’s well balanced. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase. I’d like a leather sheath rather than the nylon one it comes with, but that’s nit-picking.
What an awesome hatchet, can do small jobs flawlessly and big jobs with a little elbow grease. Gets extra sharp and stays that way for a while. The sheath it comes with is a little awkward to use though.
It’s balanced well, with the center of gravity being about midway between the top of the leather handle and the bottom of the head. In terms of size I measured it to be 13in tall with the head is 5in from edge to back and 3in at it’s “tallest” at the edge. The 14in measurement I think comes from measuring it diagonally from the longest part of the handle to the top tip of the blade (bottom left to top right in the picture).
The leather sheath seems solidly constructed (albeit in Taiwan) with a belt loop and button clasp at the top. The sheath isn’t what I’d call “ambidextrous” in that if you want to attach it to your belt to have the hatchet positioned with the edge facing AWAY from you (pointing forward) when you pull it out it has to be on your left side. When it’s on your ride side the edge points behind you. And no you can’t simply flip the sheath upside down, the axe won’t fit in that way without also being upside down. It still works well but as a right handed person I’d prefer it to be the other way, not a deal breaker however and I like the extra protection it lends to both the blade and my fingers.
othing to complain about here, the hatchet arrived sharp and the leather cover is a nice touch. full tang single piece head, handle etc is sure to give years of solid use. looking fwd to bringing this sucker on a summer full of camping & hiking
July 8, 2014.
Just wanted to add a note saying my husband absolutely loved his birthday gift. I’m so glad I discovered and purchased it for him. He has shown it to family and friends while extolling its virtues to the nth degree. He’s a very happy camper. What does he plan to use it for? I’m not sure, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s sturdy, and hefty for such a small ax. It’s handle is beautiful and well made. The leather case is lovely. A man couldn’t ask for anything more.
