Love the game
Brilliant game, brilliant delivery time.
The customization of this game is out of the world, so players who like a challenge should leap right in.
+ Combat is as fun as ever. Challanging, but fair.
+ Much more character interaction, in addition to cutscenes make player characters feel a lot more fleshed out.
+ 3D is nice, but unobtrusive. Love the 3D fight scenes.
+ ‘Pairing’ characters is a nice new mechanic that adds a lot of new stratigic options.
+ Graphics excellent, for the most part.
– Character models look poor during cutscenes – they all look 12 years old and have incredibly disproportionatly small legs (small gripe).
– DLC is INCREDIBLY overpriced.
All in all, one of my favorite 3DS games, love it 😀
Best tactics game I've played since X-COM
I had my doubts about this game, but after playing the free demo on the Nintendo 3DS eShop I ordered straight away. Very deep. Lots of layers of gameplay. Plenty of challenge. Main campaign took me 35+ hours on first attempt. This is a must hav for all 3DS owners.
A fun fire emblem game but too easy.
I love the fire emblem series. The fact that if a unit dies it dies forever is so important to how this game plays. However with the addition of the ‘reeking box’ which allows you to bring a small group of enemies to the map at any point. The amount of enemies isnt the important bit but the fact that you earn more money fighting these enemies than you do buying a reeking box and at the same time your characters are gaining exp and money to also buy more weapons. A fun game but more geared towards a new audience, too easy for my liking. I have not once struggled to beat a boss, even the larger bosses towards the end of the game.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU HAVE A 3DS AND DONT OWN THIS GAME?
Stop reading the reviews and buy! Its a really awesome game for anyone who likes JRPG’s. you dont really have to know the story from teh other games… you can just jump straight in and understand.
AMAZING
This game is utterly great, i havent ever played a fire emblem game so i was sceptical but wow! it offers a bit for everyone, the new player and the old veteran.
recommended for all people who enjoy tactical games with amazing story and love a challenge or two
Can't stop playing
Can’t stop playing X.X
not because of the story line but cause of the support system since there are so many characters and suppo
I had no interest in any video games until I tried this- now I am absolutely hooked. The best 3DS game for teens and adults.
My son and I adore this game. If you want a challenge, with a story and incredibly interesting characters – you cannot go wrong. I am no expert but the game is different from nearly all other games because of the variety of characters and that every players characters will develop differently as each player will make different decisions and have personal preferences. There is the opportunity to play with permanent death, but be prepared to be very disappointed and angry should you lose someone that you have developed and nurtured for hours over weeks of play.
If only I could get this for PC………
First Time Playe
Simply put, I can’t put this game down. I’ve never played a Fire Emblem game before, nor have I played a strategy game beyond the mere basics of Pokemon, and while my skills are dismal in chess, I’m not terribly bad at this. Playing on Normal Mode in Classic (once characters die they stay dead – and I’d definitely recommend using this feature, even if you’re a newbie like me) isn’t the most challenging, I agree, but it’s an easy enough starting point for someone who has no idea what they’re doing; hence, me.
It did take me a couple of chapters to get used to the battling process – the biggest problem, I found, was that in the first few battles you only have a handful of characters, but by chapter two you’re abruptly thrown about ten characters and keeping track of them all was difficult for someone who was still trying to remember the game controls. I ended up repeating the beginning battles quite a few times because I kept forgetting that Archers fight from a distance, Lissa can’t fight, Miriel’s not the strongest etc etc. But if you persevere you should get into the swing of it pretty quickly.
Now I haven’t completed the story, but I’m on chapter fourteen and I am a little disappointed at how easy Normal Mode becomes. Once I unlocked challenges (battles on the map that don’t contribute to the plot line) I started to level up rather fast – I’m the type of person who spends hours grinding her characters to increase their stats, and Normal Mode has become, well, easy (on that note, there is a huge amount of game play hours in this, so don’t worry about it ended as quickly as games like Zelda: A Link Between The Worlds). The battles may become increasingly more challenging as I continue, but while the plot continues I’m going to progressively level my characters, so I’m sceptical. That aside, it is still a fantastically fun game.
(Also, I created another account on Hard Mode to see what that was like. It’s not exaggerating – it’s difficult. I’m really struggling to get past chapter two – it’s great fun).
Aesthetically, the game graphics are top-notch and everything’s such a marvel to look at on 3D. The characters are hugely varied in personality – which I adore – and playing in Classic only makes this more valuable. Some characters I don’t mind sacrificing or never using; others are immediate favourites and I couldn’t imagine playing the game without them. Plus, the relationship system? It’s a delight! The girly, manic part of me cackles at pairing off certain characters; it’s a wonderful contribution. (In saying that, some relationships still came as a bit of a shock for me! I just went with it).
Oh, the plot! Like I said, I haven’t finished it, but it’s developing slowly. I did groan at the typical amnesia cliche – but I love it now. Hanging on the edge of my seat for new revelations spurs me to finish the game – the only problem I have is pacing myself! I truly want this game to last forever, but unfortunately there’s only twenty five chapters (and a heap of side stories).
I would definitely recommend this game. The number of five stars says it all, really – this is a must buy.
I thought this game was crap....
When I played the demo via the e-shop, I was so underwhelmed. But 3 of my friends bugged me and wouldn’t shut up about it so I picked it up.
And it was a great decision, the demo didnt do it justice, its not so much about playing it for 15-30 minutes, its about getting into the story the characters and the deep strategy system that pulls you in for hours and hours.
It is my 5th 3ds game and ive already played additively fire emblem more than mario 3dland, mk7, pokemon x, resident evil revelations (which are all really losing their flavour).
I bought my 3ds to play pokemon x, but that was a disappointing result, as it was aside from pretty a lackluster experience.
Fire emblem awakening has awakened me to the series properly and I think this is the game that has made my 3ds purchase worth it.
Great game!!
Brilliant game, great characters, interesting story, gripping gameplay, nice difficulty, not to easy not to hard. Well worth a look if you are looking for something that little bit differe
fire emblem.brillia
liked fire emblem games since gameboy fire emblem and playstation 1.i like the new one because you have option of not losing members for the hole game when you play on beginner mode. brill game
Utterly brillia
If you like turn-based strategy, or indeed any game that makes you think then you owe it to yourself to buy this.
It’s a great evolution of the Fire Emblem series, it has a strong pairing mechanic and fun support conversations. My recommendation would be to play on Hard Classic if you have experience of FE or other TBS games. Easy is a bit too easy..
It’s pretty decent value as well – I racked up around 80 hours of gameplay to complete the story and there were many sidequests left unplayed.
With this game I feel that Fire Emblem tips Advance Wars into a cocked hat. Would love to see a new AW game on the 3DS
One of the best 3ds games out there.
Strategy at its finest. Beautifully made but keeping the classic feeling! Don’t be picky with the graphics, the feeling pf the game goes far beyond that and the animated sequences are awesome. Excelent for the strategist, one searching for a challange or someone loving the japanese way of doing what they do best.
Brilliant game
If your’e into turn based strategies with beautiful art styles then this is a great game for you. Expect a heavy anime theme, whilst staying true to it’s roots with an optional classic mode.
I got this as a gift to myself and I’ve not been able to put this down since Christmas day! If I had to describe the game in my own opinion, in two words I’d say… Anime chess? And those are two things I love luckily for me! Never really been a fan of games like Final Fantasy I find them uninspiring but maybe I haven’t given them enough of a chance because this game… oh wow.
I enjoyed the gameplay greatly which is kind of repetitive but the real charm of this game is the large number of memorable characters. There are some forgettable characters (or maybe not if I didn’t let them die and read all their dialogue!) but they are the minority. I keep telling myself to man up and stop holding L,R,start, select every time one of my more favourite characters gets killed but I just can’t bring myself to do it because I might miss out on some funny/interesting dialogue! I’ve not long started my second play through and I’ve only just bothered to read wikis for the game and found out there are many more child characters to unlock besides the more obvious ones… Great stuff! Loads of replay value for sure. Plus some dlc both free and purchasable that I haven’t tried yet since I like to play the original games to the fullest extent before going into extra stuff.
The visuals? Awesome. I soon looked into previous instalments of this series and I definitely prefer the pixel art style (ingame) over the wii/gamecube ones but ehh each to their own. Not looked much further than that but I will do sooner or later.
As for the anime style cut scenes…They were an unexpected treat and I want much much more of that!
The only improvement I can think of would be for the dialogue scenes to be fully voiced (I wouldn’t even mind if it was in Japanese strangely enough), that would really be the icing on the cake seeing as I’m a big anime fan. If they ramped up the amount of dialogue and awesome cut scenes this would be one of the best games of all time for me never mind best handheld.
So overall I say the gameplay could do with more variety like what has been offered in previous instalments (or so what I’ve read online) but this really is an amazing game. And that’s coming from a PC gamer. I only got a 3DS XL to relive the pokemon experience after the last game I played on the DS which was pokemon pearl. I’m very happy that I don’t have to leave my 3DSXL collect dust or sell it soon after purchasing it just to play pokemon Y! This is one of the few games these days that’s worth the price tag so if you like strategy, chess, anime, manga, rpg’s ect. Then get this game! (This is my 1st ever review and amazon are ever so persistent in my emails but I had to give in for this game because it’s great!).
If you like strategy games you have to get this game
I love this game. It is the first entry in the Fire Emblem franchise that I have played and it has made me want to get the DS and GBA games. The strategy element is great, reminds me a lot of Advance Wars but I like the swords and magic setting a lot more than tanks and machine guns. On top of that, you get to form alliances and even romance between your characters. I am playing it on normal and without permadeath and cannot wait to restart it with permadeath enabled.
LOVE I
Spoilers but when chrom proposed to my female avatar my little sis screamed in excitement.I love this game a slight retro twist on a popular manga or anima game. It took my breath away.
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Amazing Graphics, Great gameplay. What else could a Gamer want? Genuinely good game. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes RPG games
First Fire Emblem
This is my first fire emblem game, i bought it because of the many good reviews that it got, and I must say that they were all right.
What i liked about Fire emblem Awakening is the fact that it includes customization, something that many, but not all video games have. It also includes difficulty settings, and i’ll be eternally grateful for that, since not everyone can get past the ‘hard’ and ‘lunatic’ modes right off the bat.
The plot and graphics are very nice too.
If you’re not sure about buying this game, you can always head to the 3DS eshop and download the demo.
Best 3DS Game!
Hugely recommend. To think they considered discarding this franchise? As a turn-based strategy, it’s best compared to X-Com, albeit more fantastical in setting.
Great introduction to the turn based genre
I have always fancied the idea of playing RPG games but never really understood them. I usually give up too early and trade the games in. I did finish and love Valkyria Chronicles on ps3 and that is the only other RPG I’ve taken to completion. This is a fantastic introduction to the Genre, the game holds your hand and walks you through until you have a good understanding on how to continue.
The story of the game is good, it manages to be funny and tragic with a few simple twist but overall entertaining.
I mainly played with the sound off however the few hours I had sound on (through a small capsule speaker) I did like it. There wasn’t really anything annoying, I played the game with Japanese spoken audio. The backing music was good in it’s own right and not too cheesy in my opinion.
The graphics were a lot better than I expected. I play usually home console and am new to the handheld gaming. The story scenes and fight scenes are pretty. The game map is good however due to the small screen I sometimes struggled to see certain people if the whole of my “army” was in a tight group. I liked the 3D thought it worked well. I admit I turned if off for most of the game except cut scenes though I done this purely for battery life. If I played pluged in I had sound on and 3D :).
Lifespan, it’s taken me just over 46 hours to complete the game. I am new to these game and I’ve done all the optional battles as they appear. I have not however done any of the DLC quests. I read in a review these make the game too easy so avoided them. I played the game on “Casual” setting which means that if I lost a unit they would not be gone forever, just that battle. I’m glad of this as I did have a few fall early in my campaign. So I wouldn’t say the game is too easy for those of us starting out. Once I’d built my main units up though things did become pretty straight forward. I will play this again on “Classic” mode though I’ll wait until I have played other 3DS titles.
Overall I really enjoyed the experience and this has whetted my appitite to try again with the RPG genre. I would recommend anyone to give this game a good go. Makes me wish I hadn’t bombed off FF:VII all those many moons ago. Shame on me hopefully it will be re-released!
Worth buying a 3DS fo
This game is pretty much one of the best reasons to own a 3DS (or XL). The 3D effect isn’t a selling factor, and does not add much to aesthetics, but the simple 2d art style is beautiful. The 3D art (battles) is lower resolution, so a little basic, but functional.
The story gets pretty involved with several different difficulty levels, and even an important ‘casual’ option – if you select this, death isn’t permanent and the game is much more accessible for it. ‘Hardcore’ mode on the otherhand makes death a permanent situation, meaning characters you have poured time and emotional investment (you’ve named him, set him up with a lady friend, possibly had children – a lot rests on your decisions on the battlefield).
The game itself is pretty wordy – a decent reading and understanding level is required to get the most of out this game.
wow
Fire Emblem is my favorite Nintendo series, I have always enjoyed the strategic and tactical gameplay of the series. Awakening takes this series to a new level and has become my favorite game in the series.
Simply amazing
I have never played a Fire Emblem game before and really wanted to give it a chance, played the demo, loved it. Few months later I got the game and so far I have put around 50 hours into i
The BEST 3DS game
In my opinion, this is the best 3DS game and the system has a very impressive collection of games.
The story is gripping with surprising twists. The characters are engaging, numerous and you genuinely care for them. There are different options of pairing the characters and in some cases they marry and have children – all of this has an influence on the game.
The gameplay is great. It forces you to figure out the best tactics for each conflict, pick the right team, the right weapons and so on.
The graphical style is well suited to the game and looks very nice. The figth animations are great and they don’t get old even after you’ve seen them many times. The cinematics which move the story along are excellent.
The voice acting, music and sound effects are all top-notch.
Great Game.
Long time fan of the series I have been impressed with this outing of Fire Emblem.
There are new additions compared to previous FE titles as well as some welcome returns. We see things like DLC, online play and 3D animation (on a handheld) make an appearance. We also see the marriage/children system and creating your own avatar return to the series.
This is a very good RTS game that will be a great purchase for someone new to the series as well as hardcore FE fans as there are multiple difficulties to keep all level of player engrossed.
The game utilises the 3D capabilities of the 3DS/XL well and the aesthetics in general are well presented.
This is one of the better RTS games available and definitely for the 3DS/XL, I would recommend it to all who have the system to get this game.
Best SRPG on 3DS, but DLCs are way too expensive
if the DLCs are half of the price I will give it 5 stars. if you want to experience everything in this fantastic game you need to pay more than the game itself for the DLCs…that’s my only complain
But still….I think i will buy them
Great game!
A fun game with a lot of depth and a great story and characters to boot, worth the money I paid!
This is the reason i bought the 3ds.
Thats the kind of games i like… really ! This game is what made me buy this handheld console… i used to have a DS long time ago… by the way anyone knows any other games like this?
This game rocks! I’d never played FE before this title but it is a great place to start. The story line is engaging and the gameplay consuming. Its one of those “Just one more turn!” games, for a turn based strategy game is what it is. The player directs a party of warriors around the battlefield using their skills to defeat enemies and achieve objectives whilst protecting their own troops. Every character has a story and personality which is revealed as you progress through the game. Alliances between troops are made and relationships blossom to help build strength in your group. The game has 2 modes the classic FE mode and the new easier mode. In the easy mode your defeated units retreat from the battlefield to fight another day. In classic mode they are gone FOREVER! This makes for multiple replays to try and protect everyone or sacrificing one character for the overall good. It provides many different ways to play. Street Pass multiplayer is a good feature also. Players may battle or trade against each other merely by walking past another player. You can recruit these people to your cause as well. The game features a great deal of downloadable content both for free and for purchase to prolong the life of the game. I’ve played for over 100 hours and there are still things to make me go back for more.
I am addicted to video games, and this is by far the best, especially on a portable! I had low expectations originally, however fire emblem: Awakening is really amazing.
A vast world of complex plots and weapons will absorb you, I have played it non-stop and have only paused to write this review for days. Strongly recommended!
Good game
This game is one of the best video games I have played on a handheld console. you can’t go wrong in getting this game.
Very Cool Tactical RPG!!
I’m usually into Action and Real-Time RPG, I do often try to avoid turn-based and strategy RPGs (because usually doesn’t resonate with me), however Strategy Tactical RPG may have a different treatment – Fire Emblem: Awakening is the perfect example.
It’s definitely one of my all time favourites after Kingdom Hearts series and together with Ni No Kuni: The Wrath of the White Witch, because I love the story, the characters, it’s addictive gameplay, beautiful CGI cutscenes and huge replay value, of course the beautiful and quirky touch of the amazing soundtrack.
I have to say I hardly have a complaint about this game, it may be a little fast those who like to grind a lot the characters, but the additional maps and characters does compensate, it’s an extremely well balanced RPG.
To whom I recommend? Those who likes playing RPG, specially those who love strategy RPG.
First time playing a game from the fire emblem series and i was hesitant at first due to never having played a tactical rpg. After almost buying this game several times i eventually got round to it and ive never looked back.
From the superb visuals (best looking game on 3ds by a mile) to the interesting story and smooth, diverse battle system, i just loved everything about it. Then ofcorse was the infamous perma death (which i didnt activate on my first playthrough) which means once a character falls in battle, they are gone forever.
Fire Emblem Awakening has now made me want to check out the back cataloge of games in the Fire Emblem series, which i guess is as good a compliment to the game as any.
So if your aprehensive as i was about a game you may feel would not cater to your taste, just give it a go and i bet you will not regret it.
5/5
Awesome, too awesome!
Really one of the best games on 3DS. Just try not think ask why they don’t have feet, too much.
Incredible
This is possible the best game I have played so far this year, the story, the visuals, it is a master peace, I cannot recommend this game anymore, I had my doubts, but Fire Emblem Awakening is worth every single penny.
Great game!
Fun game with a brilliant cast of characters. Would recommend for any Nintendo fan. Arrived quickly and in great condition.
Best Non-Port for the 3DS
I think that other reviewers have the basics of this right so there’s no point making a long review. I am not a big fan of strategy RPGs so this game was a bit of a hard sell for me. I’m still not a big fan of them, but this game is about the best you can get. Certainly on a portable system. The controls, level design, interactiveness, etc. are all perfect. I particularly appreciated how they took advantage of the 3DS’s capabilities despite being essentially sprite-based. There is also a great deal of character interaction including a marriage system where you can set your characters up. This can lead to a sort of creepy eugenics race where “breeding” the correct pairs leads to superior offspring, but if you ignore thinking too much about that then the interactions are just fun. There are an awful lot of sidequests and extra options to pursue here once the main story is done. The game itself can be completed in about forty hours, but if you want to get all the dialogue options it can take over a hundred. And there’s more DLC coming!
And now I’m going to shamelessly plug Valkyria Chronicles because it’s another strategy RPG that I love.
Very pretty game
Nice fun games with AMAZING graphics/visuals/art.
Nice pace, good story. No rushing, you can take this game at your pace which I enjoy!
I like that you can save regularly and, as I don’t play my 3DS very often, I am glad that the story recap can be called up at anytime as I sometimes forget what happened!
Overall a nice game but I would prefer if there was an alternate way to get the add on maps.
It really sets the bar for all future titles yet to come in this genre.
This title really was a tour de force that broke the traditional boundaries of a tactical rpg. It offers stunning visuals, an excellent story line, attractive gameplay and seamless interaction. The only aspects that I would have any qualms with is character customization and free-roaming. I would love to see a sequel with more customization options in regards to armor, weaponry and garments and to have a greater influence on each character’s development. Furthermore, a more inclusive and interactive free-roaming environment would also do great things for this title but for a handheld console, what it currently offers is already a glorious display of entertainment hence my five-star.
This game would suit all teens, adults and young adults, it has three different difficulty levels that will challenge even the most seasoned of gamers!
Incredible
Without a doubt, this is the best 3DS experience to date. The ability to form and enhance relationships between characters to make them unstoppable together is essential and the story itself is one of the best I’ve seen in any RPG, making me care for the characters whenever something happens to them. The actual turn-based battles are masterful and really feel engaging, and the game is one of the best looking I’ve seen on the console. This makes me glad I got a 3DS at launch, because it meant I could invest my time into this wonderful game.
great game
I like this game verry much, great storyline, a lot of pleasure with this game. I would say buy it en play
Amazing
I have recenlty gotten into the fire emblem series through my partners games, and this is the first one I own. I love character creation, and although there is small choice, there is a decent choice for creating your characters appearence, the game allows you however alot of choice of classes which is great if you’re into RPG style games.
Fire emblem has been well know for its characters and the depths of their personality. This is somthing I love, and with this games system of getting supports between characters is one of the many features i like. I find it create that this game includes bonus characters from all of its pre-dessors.
Fire emblem has a great story line, accompied with extremely beautiful cut scenes between maps.
Its a great game and with everyone who’s given it ago on one of my free save files, they all have loved it. Veautiful character art, beautiful art in general, great story line, characters which you can grow fond with and love, the new class system is amazing and so much fun to play with. I really recommend this game.
Absolutely addictive game
After getting the game about two weeks after it came out in Europe I have not stopped playing it. As a long-time FE fan, I have to say this is hands down one of the strongest games in the series.
I have had so much fun playing around with the Class system and mixing and matching different abilities, the Bonus episodes add a good amount of extras, as does the DLC.
The story is good, with a couple of neat twists, the characters are fun with their own little quirks (I particularly love Henry’s “have some DEATH!!” XD) and of course with the relationship system you can get a lot of in-depth character stuff as well as some very funny conversations depending on who you pair up.
The Lunatic mode is a great challenge and the Streetpass feature will also offer a good challenge as you fight other players’ teams.
Even if you aren’t a hardcore Fire Emblem player, the game will ease you in, you can set the difficulty, switch the permadeath off (meaning your characters won’t be lost forever if they die) and there are tutorials and help articles.
Any RPG or SRPG gamer will love to have this game in their collection if they own a 3DS. Heck, I think buying a 3DS is worth it just for this game (though there are of course many other good 3DS games already out and coming up in the future as well).
Fantastic Purchase
The game arrived as described in perfect condition. No more need be said on that.
The game itself is quite easy to get into and the difficulty settings follow a good guidance and should be accurate. Game is generally great fun to play. Like all turn-based movement strategy games, it bears some frustration in the middle of play sometimes, when the AI out-thinks you or your characters miss the opponent based on that 1% chance to miss.
Character development between the characters are interesting and funny. Though sometimes a bit unbelievable, it’s still amusing overall. You get some pretty good individual character development.
I can’t compare to its predecessors, having never played them, so I am reviewing this product as a newcomer to the franchise. I found the game to be great fun, even though it was trying of my patience sometimes. The only real downside to the game is the lack of replayability.
Great Game
Excellent game, I am new to the FE series and I had to buy this as the game reviewers were going bonkers over this.
I love stuff like FF tactics and if you do too, you need this game.
This game just make me love my 3DS!
I have been a huge fan of the fire emblem series, having first played it in on the gamboy advance I was hooked immediately!
For a handheld game it is incredibly engrossing. The story, the characters and gameplay are amazing and you will easily fall in love with. For any one who has not played a FE game it is simply a turn based strategy game where you control a team of weapon wielding characters each with their own unique personalities and strengths, and battle them against enemies on a vast map. As the story unfolds you gain new characters to help strengthen your team. This is where Awakening shines. You can now pair up your characters to gain advantages such as increase in strength and defence advantages. As you pair up certain characters together their relationship builds thus allowing them to get married and have a child (male + female characters). Their child is then unlockable on the map and allows you to add them to your team. As there are many characters, the combinations for pairing up is vast which allows for many unlockable new characters. As you fight with your characters you gain experience and allows you to level up and change the class of the characters. This aspect proves very rewarding and adds an extra layer of depth to the strategy of the game.
Overall this game is amazing! Some of the graphics are gorgeous, especially the anime style cutscenes. The music is wonderful, credit must go to the developers for creating such an epic soundtrack for the game. In short: BUY THIS GAME! If you don’t have a 3DS it really is worth buying it for just this game. I highly recommend every gamer to at least experience the brilliant epic gameplay of Fire emblem: Awakening.
Great game for beginners to the series
Fire emblem is a amazing fantasy strategic game with a great storyline, characters (they have no feet…weird but ok) ,and good battle scene gameplay. I’m new to the fire emblem series and I enjoyed this game. It’s the best 3DS game I played so far.
The game offers a great challenge depending on the difficulty you pick (Hard for beginners) and is a great time waster(I mean that in a good way. it took me 74 hours to finish it. not sure if that helps because I take long time to finish games)but still it takes a awhile to finish it.
Each battle field has unique over look that offers each characters a advantage to the battle, travel distance or attacking depending on what class your characters are. Battle scenes have a great cinematic taste to it but I will say that the ground can be a bit blurry at times and the scenes don’t offer a great 3D effect to the game But I guess people won’t care much about that. but they have no feet. 0_0 you have been warned.
You will encounter different types of characters that you enjoy talking and battling with. (Panne my favourite) with your own customised character. But there isn’t a large range of ways to design your character. Your most likely only going to change their hair colour and body type.
I won’t say much about the storyline cause I don’t want to spoil anything only saying that it’s good and interesting storyline…..they all die at the end cause they have no feet to stand on.
Overall Fire Emblem Awakening is great game for anyone who loves fantasy, games with a great storyline or new to the series.
The best game I've played in a long time.
Quite challenging, incredible depth, excellent story. Up until now, my strategic RPG experience was limited to Final Fantasy Tactics. FE:A surpasses it in every respect, and greatly contributes to the line-up of a handheld that — let’s admit it — did not have any real masterpieces thus far.
Potential GOTY right here.
Never played a Fire Emblem game before, decided to jump in with this since it seemed just right for newcomers offering multiple difficulties and two different play modes, those being “Classic” & “Casual” the former retaining the original nature of Fire Emblem and units dying permanently while the latter gives newcomers a break and the unit is only gone for the remainder of the battle. The game itself has a lot of content and that isn’t including all the DLC that has been long released since me typing this all up, I easily poured 30+ hours into it and there was still a lot I could have done including relationships, leveling characters and gaining extra abilities, etc. Easily the best game to come out on the 3DS in a long time and with a slew of even more games to come the system can only get better. A+ game would recommend to all.
Masterpiece.
This game is brilliant, every aspect of it is truly polished. It’s the best game on the system, and would be worth buying a 3ds solely to play it.
I’ve never enjoyed anything enough to go out and write a review on it – that’s how good this game actually is.
Having just finished the single player content for the first time, my play time clocks in at 50 hours. That’s a mammoth amount of enjoyment for a single player game, and there wasn’t a dull moment in the whole playthrough. The characters are quirky and fleshed out, with conversations between characters adding enormous amounts of background to the games story. Characters fall in love, get married and have kids – which for fans or RPGs adds a layer of gameplay seldom found in other titles.
The core gameplay itself is varied and challenging at times, and the games graphics and animations are gorgeous in 3D. The story is compelling and exciting enough to forgive the occasional cliche that crops up, and manages to toy with your emotions in more places than you expect. All in all, this game definitely deserves a 10/10 – I can’t think of any RPG I’ve played in recent years that measures up to Fire Emblem: Awakening.
The best 3DS experience to date.
2013 has been a fantastic year for 3DS owners. Luigi’s Mansion 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Animal Crossing…but at the top of the pile of brilliant games for me is the new instalment in the Fire Emblem series: Awakening. This is easily one of the best turn based strategy titles I’ve ever played, and my personal favourite in the FE franchise. The presentation is through the roof, offering sumptuously animated and voiced cut scenes with crisp graphics. The range of art styles is incredible. Gameplay is immensely rewarding on the higher difficulty settings, as you plan and strategise your next move on the battlefield. Music and voice acting is top notch, the campaign will keep you going for a long time with the regular Spotpass DLC, and multiple playthroughs are a must to fully appreciate and understand the characters and their motivations and quirks. In a word: unputdownable.
Incredible!
As a long time fan of the series I was very excited for this new entry on the 3DS and it did not disappoint. An interesting story that really attaches you to the characters as well the addictive gameplay that has become a staple of the series make Fire Emblem: Awakening a great gaming experience that I have already sunk 100+ hours into after 2 playthroughs making this game great value for money. The additions of support levels leading to marriage and children of characters, downloadable content as well as the option to disable the usual perma-death effect if a character falls in battle makes this game accessible and an essential purchase for all 3DS owners.
Excellent RPG for all gamers
This is simply the best game I’ve played in a long time and is reason alone to buy the 3DS console. You will be quickly drawn into the deep and enthralling storyline and fall in love with the huge cast of colourful and multi-dimensional characters. You can even customise your avatar (or My Unit) who plays a vital part in the storyline and has different interactions with the game’s characters based on personal choices and personality traits. There are two modes of gameplay – Casual and Classic – as well as different levels of difficulty, ensuring that every type of gamer is satisfied. It also means that there is a potentially endless replay value. I played it first in Casual mode with normal difficulty, and am now working my way through Classic with hard difficulty. If you love RPGs then this is a must-buy for sure. I have not played any other games in Fire Emblem series but after playing this I will most definitely check the others out.
Best game of one of my favorite game series
Fire Emblem is kind of weird, because even though it has some really hardcore fans (for some reason, both me, my brother and female friend love it even though we have widely different tastes in other aspects), it has never really taken off in sales or popularity. Kind of sad, because it has all the ingredients necessary, with a nice medieval/fantasy setting, very personal characters that you grow to care about, lots of compelling management (like trying to marry your characters to each other, and let them have kids!), and of course most of all, very addicting gameplay.
I think the gameplay might be the problem. It’s turnbased strategy, and it looks like “chess” on pictures, so I can understand why many people decide not to try it out. But trust me, once you get the hang of it, it is really fun and addicting, and I can absolutely recommend this game to ANYONE. It’s just that good!
Great tactical gameplay
A brilliant hooking story line and tactical gameplay which makes you use your brain – permadeath is a great, if frustrating feature.
Awesome
There plenty of good reviews so not much i can add except buy it now! I got the FE limited edition 3DXL in retail for a great price but i would have paid alot more for this great game!
Absolutely the best 3DS game so far and without a doubt the best Fire Emblem in a long time! LOVE IT!
Sick bro
The game is sick bro played it like 7 times through great for procrastinating! Also got good comedic value funny, funny stuff.
Fire Emblem 3ds- what a game!
This is such an epic game, its going to take may hours to get though!
The graphics are great with lovely story line and great story graphics too.
For anyone new to fire emblem type games i recommend you give this a go……but its not going to be easy…..especially on classic mode where your characters die and don’t return!
A brilliant game -love it!!!
Fire Emblem Awakening
The game is as good as I expected from the beginning. It has the best of the previous ones inside.
Best 3DS Game
This game is an awesome rpg. A lot of characters, a great story, epic battles. I can’t stop playing and having fun with it. The best 3DS game so far.
So addictive! If you're unsure about it make sure you download the demo!
The graphics are seriously good, and make this game so immersive-combined with the player centered storyline. To be honest, this is a game worth buying the 3DS for! The characters are likeable, and I especially like the ability to play extra levels (from the outrealm gate- some of which require you to purchase but there is a free one available-see the nintendo website) and battle other ‘risen’ (enemies) to help you level up. My only criticisms would be how quickly you can progress through the game; -I’m wondering how long I have left before the game is over[-therefore leaving you to only play extra levels and battle random enemies? or are there more stories?] and also the graphics during battle movements and foreign* avatars which are just a ‘card’ which are a little lacking compared to the rest of the game and the cutscenes. It also would have been better if the characters actually spoke rather than muttered an ‘English’ word or sound as the text comes up (which gets a bit repetitive).
*bonus characters bought/won with in game currency and/or through spotpass, streetpass etc.
Cool
This is the best game of the year. Playing lots and i will be sad when i finish the game?
One of the best games on the 3DS to date!
Having never played a Fire Emblem game before (although I was aware of them) I was initially attracted to this game due to the anime inspired art style (yes, I am an Otaku lol) and after reading rave reviews, I tried the demo of it on the 3DS e-shop. One play of the demo was enough to make me place a pre-order for the game that same day! The reason? First of all the game dispelled all of the misconceptions I had about strategy games in general, by being so damned accessible to newcomers. Every new element of the game is explained to you as it is introduced (such as the archer Virion only being able to attack from two squares away from an enemy, the pair up system granting your units boosts to their speed and defence etc). Speaking of the pair up bonus, over time if you pair up a male and female unit in battle regularly, their relationship will improve and they will move up through several ranks in the support system (C being the lowest and S being the highest, although two units of the same gender can only go up to rank A). When they reach rank S, they will marry and have children you can later recruit as allies during the game’s side quests, dubbed Paralogues. Pairing up the right units will allow you to pass down certain classes and skills to the children they would normally not be able to access, resulting in a deep, Pokemon style breeding system. You will as I have, find yourself going through the game several times to experience all the different interaction conversations between each character, all of whom you will grow to like as they have been very well developed and localised from the original Japanese.
The story takes places over 26 chapters and is well told. You will find that the character you create at the start of the game (whom you can customise and give a name to) plays a central role throughout. The game has 3 difficulties from the get-go. Normal is recommended for players new to the game/genre, Hard is for players who have played the series before (also the “standard” difficulty) and finally, Lunatic is for people who REALLY want a challenge, as it is incredibly difficult even for veteran players. For the first time (to my knowledge) the game also allows you to decide whether you want to play with Fire Emblem’s staple “permadeath” system on or off. With it on, you will have to often think several steps ahead of the game’s AI, or risk yourself losing one of your units for good (no way to revive them if killed). This is most players’ (including myself) preference, but for those who don’t want to use it, the “casual” mode allows a fallen unit to return after the battle they were defeated in (they will simply retreat not die).
This is a game (much like Ocarina of Time 3D, Mario 3D land, Resident Evil Revelations, Luigi’s Mansion 2 etc) that every 3DS owner needs to play. It is not an easy game by any means on the higher difficulties, but it is a rewarding one you will find yourself coming back to again and again.
I bought a 3DS almost solely to play this game, after hearing such great reviews about it. I haven’t been disappointed.
The game has a very nice story, and the characters are unique and loveable and stand out from each other in terms of their personalities and quirks. There’s a lot of humour in it, while still feeling like quite a solid and serious story.
Gameplay is excellent, especially if you play on Classic mode, which really makes every decsion count. The free bonuses available over Spotpass are very nice, and the extra maps and heroes available as DLC are well worth a look.
Translation is very good, cut scenes are gorgeous, and the character designs are wonderful and charming.
I fully recommend this game to anyone who wants to try out a turn-based strategy RPG.
As hardcore as you want it to be
This tactical-RPG is a perfect fit for the 3DS library. After spending some weeks with it, I am still surprise at my engagement with it.
As far as difficulty goes, the game offers two main modes: Classic, where a character death is permanent, and Casual, death remains only until the battle’s end.
The enemies’ AI is quite weak as they mostly charge into your ranks mindlessly, sometimes targeting actual vulnerabilities. However, if enough care isn’t taken, you could lose one of your favourite characters, forcing you to go on without it or load the previous saved game. As I mentioned before, I am surprised that after this much time with the game, I still enjoy replaying a stage so that I don’t lose a single team member.
The series’ mechanics are obviously still present, but the new social mechanics and addition of downloadable content make this a must have. I recommend this to any micro-management or tactical-RPG fan.
One of the best games out there
Looking for something new? This is a gorgeous game with a different approach. I was new to the series and so I was amazed by this game and its uniqueness, I strongly recommend it to any rpg lover and any 3ds owner. This on is a just have
Buy it. Buy it now!
Instantly became one of my favourite Games for my 3DS, it has a great Storyline (some parts are quite predicable) and a long game play that you actually want to play through. Even after you’ve finished, there are numerous difficulty levels and a ‘Classic’ mode where the Characters that die in the game battles don’t come back.
If you’re sceptical about purchasing, I fully recommend you go ahead and buy it. Enjoy!
Awesome but...
I love a game with good storyline and characters this game has this in abundace. Only prob is I bought my 3ds as an excuse to game without disturbing my wife but sessions take longer than expected with this game.
Fire Emblem: Hot Property
As a long standing can of the Fire Emblem games, the latest instalment did not disappoint! The 3D graphic effects are astounding, and the game play intuitive. Fans and newcomers alike will whole heartedly enjoy this.
Fire Emblem
Excellent, excellent game. If you like strategy RPGS you’ll love this. Possible contender for 3DS game of year. Loved it, in case you wondered.
Excellent game
First time I had played a Fire Emblem game and it is amazing! Definitely worth the money. Worth playing with permadeath on too, makes it that much more fun!
Great Game, buy it!
Never played a Fire Emblem game before, but so glad I decided to take a punt with this game!
Absolutely love it! It has not been out of my 3DSXL since I got it. Gameplay takes a bit of getting used to but once you get it you will be hooked. Dont normally play strategy/rpg style games but even if you are not a fan of the format this is a great game. Buy it you will not regret it. PS. Make sure you play with Permadeath enabled as cannot imagine playing it any other way (and I am a newcomer to the game!).
Fire Emblem. A game series I had never heard of until last month, and upon seeing reviews and screenshots immediately decided to purchase a 3DS. I haven’t owned a Nintendo portable console since my original Gameboy!
Thankfully, I have not been disappointed by this game in the slightest. I’ve put 77 hours into this game already (thanks 3DS for logging my gameplay!) – that includes one completed game on Normal difficulty, and my current second play through on Hard with permadeath turned on.
To put it simply, Fire Emblem is a bit like Chess, but with characters, all with their own skills, personalities and relationships. The game is quite simply, addicting. I particularly enjoyed the amount of scope when creating your own character for the game, down to gender, build, hair style, hair colour, facial expression and voice. For a portable console, I have been impressed with the game in general, graphics (particularly cut scenes)and game mechanics.
If you’ve been wondering whether to get a 3DS for games like monster hunter, zelda and some classic DS remakes like chrono trigger, this is the game that is worth the investment! If you like turn based strategy games in general, you wont be disappointed.
Brilliant game
I waited for this game for a long time, was really looking forward to it and it did not disappoint! I definitely recommend it!
War, never been so much fun.
At it’s core FE: Awakening is a game of connections and relationships. The soldiers in your company (the Shepherds) form friendships and relationships that give them stat bonuses such as better criticals and the chance of avoiding damage the more you have two units working together. In the case of male and female pairings this can result in marriage and sometimes children which later on join your army with traits inherited from the mother and father. From a purely technical standpoint, this is great, but the game excels in making your experience a personal one catered to what soldiers you use the most, as the characters can interact and talk to one another in the Barracks about their hopes and dreams and what they like to do in their downtime. A particular favourite of these conversations for me was between Panne (a sort of were-rabbit) and Gaius (a sweet tooth pickpocket), in which Gaius is desperate to try a sweet fruit from a tree on a cliff edge and Panne has to keep dragging him away from it. The great thing is all of the interactions between each character is different and unique, so my experience could differ entirely from yours.
There are also a lot of different character classes ranging from Pegasus Knight, Mage, Cavalier, Knight and many more. You can re-class most characters when they reach Level 10 XP and create a truly bespoke experience that suits your play style best. There’s also the option once a character reaches Level 10 to use a Master Seal which opens up advanced classes to your characters that were previously unavailable.
The combat is surprisingly deep for what amounts to rock, paper scissors – swords beat axes, axes beat lances and lances beat swords. This opens up more when you keep in mind classes like archer and mage are effective against flying units. Who you choose to fight in your unit is entirely your decision, and it can be immensely satisfying levelling up your lowest soldier to a force to be reckoned with.
The music is, and I do not use this word faintly, Epic. From a full orchestral theme that soars, to the incidental music in the barracks to the battle music all adds depth and character to the world of Ylisse. The graphics and art design are similarly top notch, mixing beautiful animated cut scenes with 3D battles when you engage the enemy to the maps of deserts with giant dinosaur skeletons and the sprites that represent your units.
Fire Emblem: Awakening is up there with the best turn-based strategy games of this generation such as Valkyria Chronicles and X-Com: Enemy Unknown. Like both of these games you can permanently lose your favourite soldiers, and like both of those games you will form close bonds and connections to those soldiers that you will never want to end.
Ah yiss
I am a massive fan of fire emblem so I cant really give a fair review. The cutscenes, etc are awesome on my xl, really nice to watch. I must say that about all the 3ds games I have played so far, they have some excellent viewable content. But i do not see myself skipping a single cutscene during this play through.
The gameplay is awesome and very deep, you have so many options in battle, many different tactics to try, etc. Between items, classes and relationships the game mechanics are extremely rich.
Any SSBM fans out there with a roy fetish like myself would be happy to know he is obtainable via DLC
Got the package delivered just on time, couldn’t help but load my 3DS XL up as soon as i opened it! Still haven’t put it down 😛 Brilliant game! recommended to every 3DS owner!
It's true what reviews say
This game really is one of, or even the best 3DS title so far. Very good presentation, amazing 3D effect with a very deep scene (I’m playing on a 3DS XL), epic soundtrack, refreshed game mechanics all add up to an experience of little competitors on the platform, and one with hundreds of hours of single-player replayability.
From downsides: the animations of combat are a little goofy, as they were in previous 3D (Gamecube and Wii) Fire Emblem titles. It also offers a different kind of difficulty from games like classic FE7, where the campaign was very linear. Disappointing is the lack of any online multiplayer options – I’d love to have some epic battles of endgame teams with friends…
As a fan of the series and a person open to changes I appreciate what was done to this game and recommend it to fans (who will welcome the Lunatic and Lunatic+ difficulty levels and a humongous Support Conversation Log to fill) and people new to series alike.
A fantastic adventure.
I’ve never been into turn based strategy games more complex than pokemon but on a fervent recommendation from a friend, I bought this (from the nintendo e-store, not amazon) and was most surprised.
The graphics are beautiful and take full advantage of the 3D capabilities of the 3DS. The plot is engaging and the characters are brilliantly represented.
The gameplay took me a while, as a beginner, to get into. The complexity was overwhelming at first but as you get into it, you find yourself understanding and planning rather than just throwing people into a battle and hoping for the best. It’s sort of like the Sid Meier’s Civilization games with the turn-based and grid land combat.
I can’t compare it to other games in the series but I do fully recommend for first time players. It’s not suitable for under-12s due to the certificate but I agree. For one, the dialogue and gameplay is a bit violent at times. Also, the strategy may go over the heads of younger kids (though my 9-year old nephew likes to watch over my shoulder and gives me pretty good pointers).
All in all, I love it and think it’s a fab buy for hours of rewarding gameplay. Go get it!
This game arrived, on the release date, and I loved it. A good solid 35 hours of gameplay, and that was on the easiest setting, without doing the side-quests. So much game to play, and the style of class system gives it great replay value! If you have ever play an FE game, give this one a go, because it is fantastic. Really enjoyable, great characters, funny without being cheesy, and generally good!
Just really want reiterate what everyone else has said about this game. It’s the first Fire Emblem I’ve played even though I love RPG’s (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Advance Wars etc). I was a bit dubious about buying it, but all the good reviews it was getting I soon caved in. I have been stupidly addicted to it ever since. About a week now, haven’t even used my PC, which is very unusual for me. The flow of gameplay is brilliant and battles are very fun and can be quite time consuming. I have got it on normal difficulty without the perma death. I have had quite a few units die on me already so I’m glad I don’t have the perma death on. Might do that after I’ve completed it. I don’t really have the time to sit there for an hour at a time planning a battle. Saying that though they still take me 10-15 mins and I’m sure that will increase as the game progresses. All in all I agree with what other reviewers say, this is one of the best, if not the best game out on the 3DS at the minute. I’ve probably played more DS games on my 3DS recently. Namely Dragon Quest IX, which I’ve just completed (60+hours).
Fire Emblem Awakening is a top game. If you like strategy/RPG’s you won’t be disappointed. Trust me!
First off i’ll start with what I do like about this game.
The graphics compared to the previous shadow dragon game on the DS are very impressive, the combat animations are great – something that I normally turn off because its dull.
The way relationships are formed is a lot more interesting and less limited like older fire emblem games where you are limited to only a certain amount of conversations per character, you get a lot more extra story about the characters and you can potentially form good relations with the majority of the characters. The way you can “pair up” with characters for bonus stats and protection is also interesting. The way you can marry them off to each other is also a nice extra, and how you can breed them like pokemon.
the story was pretty enjoyable apart from being a bit predictable at times.
Now there is a few issues that I found with it.
You are basically encouraged to grind the risen mobs that spawn on the world map, if you’ve played sacred stones its a bit like the tower. once I started doing this I found the game became very easy very quickly. you can essentially clear a map with 1 character or a pair, which makes the story mode pretty trivial. after a while I found myself babysitting the useless units that i’d normally recruit and never touch with a barge pole – and levelling them into powerhouses, by using these items called “second seals” you can have them learn multiple skills from multiply classes, and have them max out their stat caps if you so require. this is totally optional but I found myself doing it even though it made the game very easy.
I think this is not bad if you are terrible at fire emblem games and you feel the need to grind them until they can survive/dodge arrows when they are fliers etc, but I found the bonus xp system used on the path of radiance and radiant dawn was much better since you put more thought into what units you’d want to level the most since the xp was limited.
The pairing system seems to make units severely overpowered in normal and hard modes when they have good relationships. not only do you double your number of attacks, but also add to your stats, and they also defend you from attacks. I found it interesting but at the same time it is too powerful for the lower difficulties. for example you can pair a mage with a knight to raise his resistance so he can easily survive magic attacks, same if you switch out to the mage you gain a bonus to your defence so you can survive getting attacked by several melee attacks. another is pairing a thief to a pegasus knight. you can zoom across half the map as the pegasus knight to some chests before an enemy thief, and switch out to the thief so you don’t get owned by arrow attacks. it gives you clever little ways to bypass things that would normally kill you, but at the same time it takes away some of those situations that would normally have your brain working overtime, and leaves you relying on overpowered combinations.
I’ve ventured into lunatic mode briefly and it starts off way too difficult (most enemies will either half kill you, or 1 shot you) at the time when you probably need to grind risen it is not unlocked until a few chapters in. i mean, why. I’m not going to pretend i’m a master at fire emblem but its really like masochist difficult rather than wow this is hard but fun. I’ll prob give it another go tho 😛
1 gripe I have with the game is the strange grunting/whining noises the characters make after every sentence. I normally turn down the volume during the conversations incase my family think I’m watching porn. It’s ok once in a while but after a while it get’s quite annoying.
Even though this game has its shortcoming it was fun to play, and the best handheld Fire emblem that I’ve played. hoping that I can enjoy playing through it a couple more times and looking forward to the next installment of the fire emblem series!
Amazing
Truly an awesome game… was the reason why I bought a 3DS. A MUST for all 3DS owners… even people that are new to the franchise and genre.
This game makes one feel things; for the characters(their problems and victories), for the world(that is under threat), and your avatar character(that is you, participating in the story in a major way). This game became my favorite game when it combined certain elements in the character relationships and made them a part of the story.
I also really loved the challenge it gave me(admittedly, I played only a few side quests, and that did help with it a lot. I played on hard difficulty, permadeath on.
But the story made this game for me, it is a beautiful story that had sacrifice as one of its important themes, combining central problems and struggles that characters went through with immense plot twists and character relationships.
This game will be remembered for a long time.
10/10, not because it was perfect, but because I loved it so much.
I had mixed feelings when I pre ordered my copy. While I loved The Sacred Stones and enjoyed Radiant Dawn, I did not like Shadow Dragon at all. Whatever doubts I had soon fled when I started playing.
The Gameplay follows the traditional Fire Emblem formula, with some new tweaks and changes. Swords, Axes and Lances work in a Rock Paper Scissors kind of way, meaning you have to balance your party. Bows can attack from a distance, but not up close. Magic (as well as Javelins and Hand Axes) can strike from a distance or up close. Joy of joys, they bought back the Support system from Sacred Stones, and gave it a buff too. In Radiant Dawn, they just used to exchange a few generic lines. Here, you find out a lot about the character’s pasts through support conversations, and it makes a gameplay difference too. When you put 2 units side by side normally, the one attacking or being attacked gets a small boost (10% + hit for example) – if they support they get more boosts. Sometimes both characters attack an enemy too. And if 2 opposite gendered units build enough support together, they can get married and have a child, who will eventually join you.
You can also reclass your units, although it’s much more restricted than Shadow Dragon. This actually isn’t a bad thing – it makes them feel a lot less disposable. You can also promote them once they hit level 10 (although I’d recommend waiting until they hit level 20) and they bought the branching system from The Sacred Stones back. That means no 2 playthroughs have to be the same.
That brings me onto the Avatar you create at the start of your adventure. They can be whatever class you want once you get a Second Seal, although some classes are exclusive to set genders. So your avatar could be a Dark Knight, while your friend could have a War Cleric. This is one of the deepest RPGs this side of Pokmon.
But don’t think it’s inaccessible. The tutorials explain everything very well, and they’re so unobtrusive. Game Freak, watch and learn – the Pokmon series could do with some tutorials like this. It’s highly customisable too, although I wish there’d been more options for what I could do with my avatar. To give you an idea of how customisable this game is, you can even leave the original Japanese voice acting in (don’t worry you still get subtitles). For the first time, you can even turn permanent death off, although I don’t recommend doing that. The game feels better when you know anyone could die at any time.
A death sentence for any RPG is a poor story (apart from Dark Souls). Luckily, that’s not the case here. I groaned when I found out my avatar had amnesia, but the story’s anything but cliche. The characters are all memorable too, from the tomboyish Sully to the vain Virion. Chrom is one of the most fleshed out heroes of the series so far, and you really feel for him during some of the sadder moments. That’s all I’ll say about the story. I know this will probably fall on deaf ears, but please don’t read the plot on wikipedia.
As for the graphics…as someone who grew up with Pokmon Red on the GameBoy, I didn’t know handheld games could look this good. The hand drawn characters, the weapons that carry over into the battle, and the battles themselves all look great. You can also play the battle with a cinematic camera, a 1st person view or the traditional side on angle. You can also fast forward, slow down and pause the battles, which is a nice feature. Maybe the spells were a bit bland, and Panne looks like a mutant kangaroo in her animal form.
The music and voice acting are good too. The characters speak in battle, cheering when they win or crying out in pain when hit (although luckily they don’t always cheer, since that would get boring). All the characters have good voice actors that match them, and you can tell they were really trying to make something amazing here. And they succeeded. This is, for me, the best game on the 3DS right now. It’s reason no. 1 to own one. Worry not though: when you’ve finished this, you’ve got Luigi’s Mansion 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Ocarina of Time 3DS, Kid Icarus Uprising, Monster Hunter 3, Mario Kart 7 and later this year Pokmon X/Y and the sequel to A Link To The Past.
To sum up, this game’s absolutely brilliant. There are a few nitpicks I have, but this is one of the few games that I can put my hand on my heart and honestly say that there wasn’t one thing that really annoyed me. If you’re a fan of strategy games, this is a must buy.
10/10
Best 3DS game - until Advance Wars 3DS
There’s no need to me to write a long review about this as there’s plenty on here already which some up this game brilliantly.
This is, in my opinion, the best game on the 3DS. The story is so well written and the gameplay is incredible; the graphics are nothing special but they fit the game perfectly.
I can’t wait until they get round to making a new Advance Wars game because this game actually got me back interested in my 3DS, which I was close to selling at one point!
I bought the 3DS XL Fire Emblem edition because I had heard many good things about this game, and to put it short, its engaging and you can play it for hours and hours.
I have never played a game in the series before this one, which since I’m an avid gamer, find highly shameful.
There are a number of great things about this game:
– It’s quite challenging in places, especially with the ‘perma-death’, where once your characters are dead, that’s it! Don’t worry, you don’t have to play with this mode on!
– A pretty fun story line, with lots of side missions and challenges to compliment it!
– Dialogue and relationships between characters are great from a story point and also cool since they add in-battle bonuses
– Side by side combat is a great touch…i.e. 2 of your units vs 1 enemy, should you position correctly.
– Visuals are really lovely, from the anime cutscenes, to the 3D battle sequences, it all looks GREAT, and no quality was lost using the XL.
– Lots of different classes, and abilities to tune characters how you want them to be!
– Good variety of weapons, spells, items
Overall, this game is fantastic. Be you a new comer to the series, or a veteran, I’m sure every minute you spend on this game you will love. It can be challenging, looks gorgeous, and is utterly engrossing.
It is an absolute system seller, and with Monster Hunter and new big titles such as Pokemon X & Y coming out soon, there is no better time to invest in this game and console if you haven’t already.
Go out and buy it, or order now! Trust me, you’ll believe me once you try!
Fire Emblem: Awakening is my first time playing a game in the Fire Emblem series & I’m now left wondering why I had never played a game in the series before. Having never played a Fire Emblem game before, I played on Normal difficulty which I felt was just about right to ease me into the series. The enemies were beatable but any ridiculous mistakes on my part would be punished. I didn’t do any grinding & the battles were still winnable which is always a plus in my book when it comes to RPGs. There is a Newcomer mode available if you prefer a more reckless style of play but I played on Classis as the permadeath feature is what I most commonly assosciated the Fire Emblem series with. It’s an incredible gameplay mechanic and there’s nothing more painful than wincing your way through fights, hoping your favourite characters all make it out alive. However it makes victory feel all the more sweet.
I beat the game in five days (admittedly spending 25 hours on it!) but I feel it definitely gives you great value for money as I am seriously considering a second playthrough which rarely happens to me with video games. The 3DS is in for a cracking 2013 & Fire Emblem: Awakening will definitely be one of the gems in the 3DS’ crown.
love this game 5 out of five stars all the way. the gameplay is awsome and best game ive played
If you own a 3DS you have to buy this game. If you don’t own a 3DS you have to buy one and then buy this game!
What starts as a rock, paper, scissors turn based strategy game quickly becomes so much more. The way you can now pair characters for bonuses based on there relationship is great. My character recently married and I couldn’t be happier!
You will learn to care for the characters in a way you just don’t in other games. Add to this the fact that when there killed there gone (can be turned off but don’t) and you will learn to take care with every troop placement.
I like the graphical style and the cutscenes look incredible. The combat animations are nice but you will probably end up turning these off to speed up the play a bit. There is lot of game here as well. 25 story chapters, 20 something side stories and 20 something DLC maps due to be released. Only 1 available at the moment.
To sum up I love this game. It is another title in a very strong line up on the Nintendo 3DS. If you don’t have a 3DS just buy one and play this great game. 5 Stars all round.
Best Strategy RPG for the 3DS
I bought a 3DS a few months ago specifically to play Professor Layton and Fire Emblem Awakening. While it took a while for Fire Emblem Awakening to be released over here in the U.K., I can honestly say that it was worth the wait.
FE:Awakening is definitely a game any strategy RPG fan should buy, and in my opinion, a good reason to buy a 3DS for as well. I haven’t completed the game yet, as I only got on Friday (the day of release), but I’m enjoying it quite a bit. The graphics are good and the voice acting in game isn’t bad either. The game play will appeal to veteran FE fans and newcomers as well, especially with the inclusion of a normal mode that is newbie-friendly, allowing people to play through the game without perma-death on.
All in all, I have nothing to complain about the game, except for the much later release date compared to the U.S. release, but that’s not really anyone’s fault and does not deduct from the playable and fun of the game itself.
Wow.. This is an amazing game !!! I was one of those who pre-ordered it. I have been playing the Fire Emblem series for many many years with the Advance, Cube, Wii, and DS formats, and this one has taken the game to new heights with new features that compliment it very well.
The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is incredible and as always the dialog is powerful and humorous which makes the story so realistic and fun to play.
In my opinion the 3DS was crying out for this game to show what a serious console it can be when handled properly.
Yes, this is a stunner and well worth waiting a long time for.
To preface this, FE:A is one of the few non-port 3ds games that are worth getting. I know a lot of people are still undecided on the 3ds, but this game is exactly why you should have one.
OK, Fire Emblem is an (extremely) long running series, where battles take place in a turn based grid (very similar to advance wars) with terrain advantages and different units. This is where the comparisons end.
Fire Emblem as a series is generally well regarded, with some excellent games and some… not so great ones. Awakening is hands down the best of the bunch in my opinion. The old formula returns with just enough in the way of new mechanics to keep it fresh and scare me (A long time fan) on the higher difficulties. The combat is better than ever with the new support mechanics replacing the old rescue. Your units are different classes, each focusing on different weapons, spells, whatever. They are unique in the way they move across the battlefield and engage foes, archers cannot tackle foes up-close, Pegasi can fly- that sort of thing. You move your units around the grid exploiting advantages of the rock-paper-scissors weapon triangle and terrain or support advantages to kill the opposing force. It seems simple as anything at first but when you get further in the complexities are the difference between life and death- If like me you play on classic, the death of any character is permanent. That’s it. Gone. You’ve been leveling him for 20 hours and got killed by a crit? Doesn’t matter. I would still recommend new players to try classic though, it gives a sense of urgency and worry you just don’t get if you can lose half your force each fight only for them to come right back. Gameplay is a solid experience and will give you a serious mental workout at times. Oh, and Lunatic mode is as bad as it sounds. It’s properly hard.
Aesthetically, I was unsure about the translation to the 3ds screen, but it looks gorgeous. The character models look a little off in my opinion when you’re just standing around in the barracks talking, but in battle they look excellent and have a great range of combat animations- something the older games were sorely lacking. Having 3d on makes a lot of the levels look amazing, especially when fighting enemies on a hill. It gave a sense of depth I really liked and it made maps slightly easier to understand. The character illustrations are excellent as always, with detail and personality to spare. Speaking of the characters, they’re frequently stereotypical game characters but still charming and funny with their snappy dialogue and snippets of very good English (or Japanese if you so wish) voice acting. Improvements to the support system and the addition of a marriage and generations system has made the characters even more fun, with the ability to have as many ‘A’ ranked supports as you can get allowing you to hear hundreds of extra, often funny conversations between characters. Story is grand in scale, if a bit predictable at times, but it does have you legitimately care about some of the characters.
This all leads into an immense game I feel like I could play for hundreds of hours, plenty of missions in the story and a load of side missions as well as random (optional!) battles. DLC maps are on the way too, the game has been out for a year in Japan so expect them to come thick and fast if it sells well (which it will, there were widespread stock shortages when it came out in the U.S earlier in the year).
I’m sure I’ve missed some important things, but get this game if you are even remotely interested in turn based tactical fights, even if you aren’t there’s a free demo on the 3ds E-Shop to whet your appetite. 5 stars any day of the week.
*note* This was written prior to official release, and as such I did not have access to the free DLC map which can be exploited and make the game markedly less challenging. I would strongly recommend playing to the final mission before accessing any of the spotpass or DLC content for the best experience.
Excelle
This game is worth buying a 3DS for.
Flawless design, presentation and gameplay working in sync to create one of (if not THE) best game on the 3DS to date. Consider this with its replayability, it’s an essential purchase.
Fire Emblem series is renowned for its good strategic gameplay and notorious for its difficulty. Fire Emblem: Awakening keeps (and enhances) the gameplay, while giving a player options to alleviate the pain of losing a team member forever.
For those new to the series: Fire Emblem is a strategic RPG, but it is more similar to Advance Wars than to Final Fantasy Tactics. At the start of the battle your units are placed on the map, and while in there they serve a different purpose depending on their class (e.g. knights are good at melee combat but unable to use ranged attacks, healers help with keeping your units alive but are very weak and thus are an easy target for the enemy). Each map has its own objective and fulfilling it will move the story forward. AI in the game is very good and most times you can bet that if you make the slightest mistake, your opponent will use it against you. That is why in FE:A you can choose a casual mode at the beginning of the game in which your units will not be gone forever when their HP fall below 0, as they do in the classic mode.
As I’ve mentioned before the latest installment in the series brings some nice enhancements to the gameplay, my favourite being ‘support’ option. The characters who stand next to each other raise their support level which increases the chance of blocking the enemy attack or even attacking together with the ‘supported’ unit. This feature is very useful and absolutely essential if you want to play on the classic mode and/or on higher difficulty levels. Other new feature is the concept of children: when two units raise their support level to maximum, a child is born which has got the combined skills of both parents available for disposal. Even if you get them slightly late in the game it is still worth aiming for it because the support dialogues between characters can be very entertaining.
The game takes about 40-50 hours to beat (especially if, like me, you like the gameplay so much that you take on most random battles) and that doesn’t include DLC maps which are available from the eShop. The graphics is gorgeous and the battle animations don’t get boring even after many hours of looking at them (but you still have got an option to skip them if you wish). In my opinion that game alone is worth getting a 3DS for and with so many good games on the horizon you definitely won’t regret the purchase.
Just one final tip: whenever you see two random enemies bunched together on the map, take them on first, and you will get some extra money and the reward for getting rid of them.
