Google Nest Protect – Smoke Alarm And Carbon Monoxide Detector (Wired)
The smoke alarm that others look up to.
Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a split-spectrum smoke sensor to detect both fast- and slow-burning fires. It can send an alert to your phone,[1] speak to you and even light the way in the dark.
It tells you what the danger is and where it is.
The Split-Spectrum Sensor looks for both fast- and slow-burning fires. It also has a 10-year CO sensor so that it can tell you where poisonous, invisible CO is hiding. And all your Nest Protects speak up at the same time to tell you what’s wrong and where the problem is.
-
Easy to install.
Nest Protect only takes minutes to set up with your iOS or Android device. Once you’ve added each of your Nest Protects to your Nest account, they will automatically connect to each other.
-
Thoughtful, not annoying.
Nest Protect checks itself over 400 times a day and lets you know if something is wrong. It also has Steam Check, so a nice, relaxing shower shouldn’t cause your alarm to shout at you.
-
You’ll know, from anywhere.1
Nest Protect can alert your phone when something is wrong at home. You’ll receive a message if the alarm goes off, if the batteries start to run low or if a sensor isn’t working.
1 Mobile alerts require working Internet and Wi-Fi.

Seems to work well!
Have been using this for about a month. Seems to be well adjusted – starts the alarm process not-too-early, and works through “There’s smoke in the Kitchen” to “Smoke is getting thicker in the Kitchen – the alarm will sound” to “Alarm” in controlled steps. Frying bacon evokes the 1st level – turning on the kitchen cooker hood stops the process. Alarm status and controls are passed through to a smartphone. Have not tried to sync multiple smartphones. Yet.
he hole needed for mains cable had to bigger than first though
once it connected and installed its great. I haven’t seen ti work in anger yet (tempted to burn some toast to see) 2 main grumbles – 1) The fixing to the ceiling, is not clear that the hole in the ceiling needs to be large enough to rotate the cable. (about 3 cm) Once the mains cable is plugged into the device it has to rotate at least 90 degrees to lock and the plug to the power is not in the centre of the back which rotates and there is no room between the device and the clamp on the ceiling unless the hole is large enough to allow ther cable to rotate. (see photo)
2) the Nest app would not connect to my G-suite google, after getting “something went wrong” for 20 mins, I used my free Google account and all worked as documented.
**Edit 2** over 2 years since purchase, still using the original batteries! Nightlight still on Medium! Very happy!
**Edit** 10 months on, batteries still going very strong 🙂 Nightlight still set to Medium!
Nest are quickly becoming a household name in the Smart Home sector and these Smoke Detectors prove why.
Ridiculously easy to install, setup and test. We also have the 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat and they work seamlessly together in the Nest App.
Having slight pyrophobia (fear of fire), these put my mind at rest and I know the house is safe even when I’m not there.
The night light feature is great and saves turning on lights that wake the household. We have the light level set to Medium and the battery is still going strong. (Important to note that you must use the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries for a guaranteed performance).
Not only are they functional, but they look great too and remind me a bit of a Wireless Access Point. The battery feature saves you having wires trailing everywhere or having to route them through the ceiling – great!
Love the safety light feature
After reviewing this product thought I would bite the bullet and buy one . Was very easy to set-up , this needs to be done really before you fit it , and easy to install as well .Like the look of it compared to other smoke alarms , looks far more modern . We all love the night /safety light feature that illuminates the landing at night as it senses up going upstairs . Will definitely replace my other alarms now for Nest .
Good smoke/co2 detector, if only cheape
Had various issues setting up, requiring router restarts as well as Nest and app resets. Once up it was easy to put on ceiling, test is well thought through, and have linked it up to hue lights to have some proper smartness in the home.
Only downside was the price, which also prevents me from buying more for the home until they have a big discount.
It’s a good unit that you can’t put a price on for it’s safety aspects
Great product. Purchased as I was and still am turning the house smart room by room after re decorating. I have this mounted in the hallway which is joint to the kitchen and I must say it works a treat. It’s not so sensitive that it goes off each time I cook but sensitive enough to know that I’ve burned toast as I frequently do lol. I would like to see some added features from nest such as the ability to use its motion sensor with Philips hue. The Philips hue warning lights are very much delayed tho by approx 30secs but I’m not fussed about this as you can still hear the unit which after all is what a smoke alarm should do. The night light is a great feature especially when coming home late from work or just getting up in the night to grab a drink without blinding yourself with main lights. Delivery was very fast. Over all very good and little complaints about it from me.
An Excellent Piece of Equipme
This stylish product is simple to install, and has a number of very useful features. Especially no more being woken by an alarm with a dying battery at 3:00 am. The units issues warning on the status of the battery, the presence of smoke prior to the alarm going off, and the need to check regularly that the unit is functioning properly. Thee mobile app provides remote warning sand control. In the dark the built-in motion detector provide sufficiently illumination for safe passage. Expensive, but recommended
Order batteries
Product is good but can’t see how as soon as installed came up batteries low and they are 6.99 for 2 and I need 9 batteries so you can imagine it’s just cot nearly 300 for 3 of these and now got to spent more on batteries a little dissapointed
These alarms are great (We have installed 3)
The features they contain probably make this the most advanced in a smoke/CO detector on the market.
I have read some reviews that say that they don’t comply with building regulations, but having read the White Paper from Nest I’m pretty sure from my understanding that they far exceed the requirements of the building regulations.
The installation is quite easy albeit a few pointers I’ll expand on in a minute. Site registration is quick and simple. The connection to the wifi (Assuming you can remember your password) is over in a jiffy.
My only complaints are very minor regarding the installation into an existing circuit in existing wiring.
The installation kit contains:
3 off 3 way connectors.
4 off Phillips screws.
1 off wire with integrated plug
1 off mounting plate
1 off alarm (with socket for plug)
The choice of screws.
My first observation is regarding the choice of Phillips screws. Most screws and screwdrivers, in the UK, are Posidrive, many people don’t even know that there are two standards. You can use a Phillips screwdriver in a posidrive screw, but not the other way around. A Posidrive screwdriver will not fit into a Phillips screw. This means most people will not have the right screwdriver to put these screws i
I’ve included a photo showing the difference between a Phillips and a Posidrive screw
The number of connectors.
My next observation is the supply of only 3 off 3 way connectors. Most existing wiring will require 4 off connectors. Those being Live, Neutral, Earth and the Link. I over came this with a single chocolate block connector, but it would have been so nice if Nest had included 4 connectors in their kit. See my 2nd picture.
Lastly we come to the positioning of the plug.
As can be seen in pictures 3 and 4 the socket that the plug engages with is offset from the centre. The design of the nest and its engagement with the mounting plate means you can rotate the unit to get it straight on the ceiling. However as the socket is offset, you require a large hole for the plug to rotate in as it sticks back pass the base of the Nest and also past the mounting plate into the wall board. I used a 47mm hole saw as can be seen in pictures 5 and 6. This gave the plug a nice hole to rotate in once the back plate was mounted to the ceiling. However most people will not not have a hole saw like this.

Wife thought I was crazy spending this much on a ‘smoke alarm’
….but is now a convert. Anything that persuades the missus to change her mind to see things my way is well worth five stars. So simple to install (battery version), easy to check on the app. Bonus: The ‘path light’ feature is handy for that late night dash to the loo! Plays nice with the Nest Thermostat and the combined Monthly Nest Home Report includes not only energy usage but an overview of what the Protect has been up to over the past month. Considering getting a second.
…according to Which? consumer magazine and they test them extremely thoroughly. Not only are they very sensitive to all types of fire (as well as carbon monoxide), because they link together via WiFi, activating one will activate all on all floors giving you much more time to escape (e.g if you’re in the attic and there’s a fire in the cellar). Ours have never gone off inappropriately but smoke from a hot oven in the kitchen was enough to very rapidly trigger the alarms in the hall and landing a considerable distance away. They do give you a verbal warning before going off which is sufficient time to cancel the alarm if you’ve just burnt the toast etc. There’s also a handy motion sensitive night light – provides just enough light to find your way to the bathroom without completely waking you. They even call your mobile to tell you your house is burning down while you’re away so you know to make alternative arrangements for your return and plan a funeral for the dog. Only downside is they’re not cheap but that’s trivial for the assurance they provide.
Look really sma
I already had one Nest, but needed to replace my other smoke alarms which had gone past their use by date. Got three of the nests. Very simple to set up, just follow the app, as I already had one set up it just used the same settings. Gave them all a name and then fixed them to the ceiling. The ring is fixed with four screws that go straight into the plaster without any issues, felt firm afterwards. Then fix the alarm to the ring. Now when you test one alarm it automatically tests all of them.
They look very smart, much better than a normal smoke alarm. They are also all connected together so if one detects smoke, they all sound and tell you which one has detected smoke (or Carbon Monoxide).

ow this is good
oooo now this is a good product, right i know it is a bit expensive but look its safety and a good investment in your well being. The problem with all the other smoke detectors is they are so ugly and usually only a smoke detector, this looks good, is a smoke detector and a CO detector. Intalling it, very easy, i love they way it interfaces with my smart phone, speaks, can acts as a night light, can interface with other products, just so so many features. i also love that you can have more than one in the house an it will tell you where the smoke is, i have two, one in the hallway and another in the utility room, very impressed and a 5/5 from me on all aspects. i love that it interfaces with the heating system and if it detects CO it automatically switches off the heating, clever and extra safe.
Great product but pricey.
I was a bit put off by the cost, but as my old alarms (non CO2) were well overdue for replacing, I already have a nest thermostat, and am in the process of automating my home, I thought I would give these a go.
I have not been disappointed, and being able to mute the alarm when it’s cooking mid-haps triggering the alarm is great as we have a young baby at home. They also came in handy when my wife managed to set the kettle on fire whilst I was next door and was able to run home and investigate.
As one might expect, the night light feature has been the most used, and is great for avoiding tripping over the car when stumbling to the kitchen to make a bottle in the middle of the night. It’s not so bright that it wakes you up, but provides just enough light to see where you’re going without having to fumble about for a light switch.
Overall they’ve been a great buy and will hopefully prove value for money over their 10 year life.

It is my first time I have a Nest product but I must say that it is an outstanding product! Wow
I was looking for a smoke/CO2 alarm to integrate on my IFTTT plataform and read a lot of comments, articles and videos. There are a lot of several more affordable sensors but if you read comments you will see that people have a lot of complaints about false alarms using cheaper sensors. At an apartment I don’t want to disturb no one during the night or weekends. Nest have a reliable solution and this is not cheap. It is your choice the balance of decision of getting a faulty or a reliable sensor.
Design, quality and easy to use are the best you can expect from such device.
It test itself more than 400 times in a day and do an overall test once a month with real sound where you can schedule the best time of the day for this self test.
It has a voice interface stating the test status and warning if the level of smoke or CO2 is increasing before sound the alarm.
App is very easy and clean! It has an Summary display just stating that “system is protected” which is the only thing you should bother at. Device itself runs all tests to grant you stay secure.
It has a convenient led that lights up at dark and people get it the room, what they call “path way”, very convenient and practical.
Fast and safe delivery, 5 stars!

Very good smoke alarms, worth the money.
Well i had 2 very very basic smoke alarms installed in hallway and landing over 10 years old..i replaced them with 2 wired nest and 1 battery in the living room..
Installation was all straight forward with no problems..at100 a pop i was just going to have 1 in the hallway..but i thought better safe than sorry and bought 3 nest units..there all connected to wifi and the app, state of the art texhnology..i feel safer and glad i bought 300 pounds worth of units, dont skimp on safety..when performing the test via the app the voice and alarm is kinda surround sound and very loud and reassuring..
The night light for the hallway and landing is a good idea..good safety imvestment..
Superb Customer Service and suppo
I’ll leave all the techi reviews saying how splendid these bits of kit are, and just say that although these are regarded as pricey by some, for such excellent safety in your home, it is really worth going for the best.
However, this review is about good Customer Service, which is so rare these days. I bought three of these units; two to start with and then a third for a new extention which housed a boiler. One of the alarms started to ‘eat’ batteries needing three sets in five months, whilst the other two are still going strong on the original supplied batteries. I contacted Nest Support. A new unit was despatched quickly and the return package was prepaid. I received a pleasant telephone call from their Customer Service department clarifying the return and everything was done professionally. In the unlikely event that you get problems with a Nest product, you can be assured a splendid support.

Great alarm, I am very happy!
I’ve been using it for over a year now, and I am very happy with it. My daughter loves testing it ‘press to test’, the light at night when you move is also nice. It’s a bit more sensitive than my old one, so when you make steaks it warns you sometimes, but the button in the middle is very big so it is easy to silence. I am also happy that the alarm will let me know on my smartphone if I left the iron on 🙂
I pondered for a long while over whether to buy these as they are anything but cheap. In the end, I decided that our life was more important than the six hundred pounds which is what I spent to put a detector in every room. They do just what I wanted. When my wife burns the toast in the kitchen, the detector in my office in the attic, and every other room announces, “There is Smoke in the Kitchen, the alarm will sound”. My phone also activates. My wife cancels the alarm in the kitchen and opens the window and the detector then announces, “The smoke is dissipating in the kitchen” and then eventually, “The smoke has cleared”. At night when I move through the house with the lights off, the detectors illuminate spreading enough light for me to see where I’m going. As an electrical fire can trip the mains power, this facility provides emergency lighting which could be a life saving feature. Once a month the system does a self check and sends a report to your phone. This has given me peace of mind and as the money spent has long been forgotten, I am so glad to have these in my home, especially as my wife and I are growing older.
Great upgrade to existing smoke alarms.
These are really great and well worth the price tag in my opinion. Fitting is fine to do yourself with the mains power as long as you pay attention to the instructions which are very clear.
The most annoying thing is the absolutely tiny QR code that needs to be scanned. My phone camera had trouble focusing on such a small code so it took several minutes.
These are extremely sensitive, and are set off by the tiniest smoke from cooking, and any kind of vape smoke, so bear that in mind if you need them in a particular place. They are also set off by steam from the bathroom, but only if you have a bathroom with no extractor or window you can open.
The best feature is the night light which comes on for you when stumbling through the hallway at night, and is enough light to see, but not so much to be annoying.
I installed two of these with no problems at all other than the QR code issue. The phone app is great and easy to use. They will last about 10 years, but all smoke alarms will stop working after this time because of the half-life of the radioactive element used to detect smoke, not because they want you to buy a replacement.
The future of home protectio
Fantastic product. I bought the three set and have in the most important areas for full coverage.
Here are the pros:
Great packaging
Incredibly Easy to set up
Work together – when the alarm goes off they all respond so you hear it across the house. Voice alerts mean the system ‘tells’ you what the problem is and where the problem is
Great app – you get the alerts on your mobile device in real time with a history of events – you can add people so they also get the alerts.
Easy to physically install
They look fantastic
They self test based on a schedule you set
Here is the con:
They are pricey. But you get what you pay for and what price peace of mind?
Upon opening the product I was disappointed to find no supplied wall plugs, but quickly realised they were self-tapping screws of decent quality. Installing the back plate was a breeze, and you don’t have to be super precise with the alignment with any nearby walls as once the detector is attached it can still be rotated for finer adjustment.
The companion app is okay as far as smart home apps go, although it had trouble with my postcode format despite my location being set to UK. I ended up punching in a postcode I knew from a few miles away, which it accepted. I don’t want my smoke alarm knowing where I live anyway.
The rest of the setup was painless and once the initial self-test was completed you’re not really left with anything further to do. The alarm is loud and very similar to a non-smart detector alarm sound.
The (default setting) pathlight I found initially underwhelming, but it comes into its own in pitch-darkness. It’s still very dim, but going from no light to some light is a useful feature. I’m really not sure how effective this would be in a smokey atmosphere, and hopefully I’ll never find out, but in my mind I see this as an everyday convenience rather than a selling point safety feature.
100 does seem a bit expensive for a smoke alarm, but to be honest I didnt get much change from 50 when I last bought a ‘dumb’ smoke and CO detector. If it lasts the rated 10 years, that’s 10/year + batteries, which is really not a huge price to pay for something that could potentially save your life.
I really like the fact it self-tests regularly and will report any problems automatically. Admittedly, my other smoke alarm only ever got ‘tested’ when I burned the bacon or made teriyaki chicken, so if you can put a price on peace of mind you could make the argument that these detectors are good value.
I’m going to see how this detector goes, and as long as it doesn’t eat through batteries I’ll probably end up buying another one for upstairs based on my experience so far.
So far, so good.
Update: I had this a few months now and still going strong. But one thing I don’t like is it seems silencing an alarm from your smartphone has to be done via Bluetooth. I don’t have Bluetooth enabled on my phone, so this is a pain, and it’s actually easier for me to reach and press the button on the alarm itself. A nitpick maybe, but worth mentioning.
Having had a Nest thermostat for a couple of years and a faulty smoke detector, I took the plunge and bought what could be the most expensive smoke alarm on the market.
The Protect was easy to install on the ceiling, coming with a fixing plate and screws. It also comes with batteries, pop them in, connect to my phone and it ran a few tests, then it was ready to pop onto the plate and leave it to do its work.
I love the fact you get a notification in the Nest app when the alarm detects smoke, it hasn’t happened yet, but if it did when I wasn’t at home I could check it out on my security camera and deal with any emergency there and then. It has happened when I have been at home though, with smoke from the kitchen while grilling sausages. You hear a loud voice from the Protect telling you there’s smoke, and in case you have multiple units, it tells you which room the smoke is in. This also comes up on the app. You’ve then got the option to silencing the Protect via the app before the full alarm sounds.
The nightlight is another great feature, it’s not torch light but it is bright enough to help you see where you’re going late at night with the lights off. I’m not sure how powerful it’d be if the house was filled with smoke though.
The unit performs a self test once a month to check its alarms are working (smoke and CO2), and lets you know via the app when the test is complete. It also checks it batteries and will notify you if they need changing.
The most unusual thing about this alarm though? Never before have I had guests commenting about my smoke alarm. Even up on the ceiling its an eye catcher and a number of visitors have mentioned how good it looks!
Did I need a ‘smart’ smoke alarm? No. Did I see this and then try to justify it? Yes.
Nest seems to almost create markets for things we don’t really need. But these products are very well made, designed and thought out. Our carbon monoxide monitor had expired, so I took the opportunity to purchase this after reading some reviews claiming the sensors it uses are really good. I wanted something reliable I could mount and not worry about and this certainly seems to be the perfect candidate.
In the box, you’ll get a user guide, the Nest Protect, a mounting plate and some screws. It’s as simple as you’d expect and takes about 15 mins to install. The unit itself feels very sturdy and well made and is quite nice to look at.
Fitting – I opted for the battery model as the Nest will let you know once batteries are running low, and I don’t have the wiring for a wired model in place. I was mounting this on a plasterboard ceiling so personally, I didn’t feel the screws alone offered enough stability. I’d recommend fitting with some wall plugs if you have a plasterboard ceiling too. 6mm wall plugs (red) will offer a nice snug fit. Note that the Nest Protect can be rotated on it’s base to lock it in, so you don’t have to get the base mounted perfectly straight. It’s also worth noting that it’s a pretty big device, so should cover up any screw holes from a previous fire alarm nicely.
Setup – Just download the app, create an account and scan the barcode/enter the serial. It’ll carry out a test and then it’s good to go. The alarm is much louer than my previous fire alarm which gives you the confidence of it being clearly heard.
App – The Nest app is nice and clean and as expected, allows you to control the settings of your Protect. It has a log of when it has carried out checks, been activated etc. The protect also has a nice little light that is automatically triggered on it too which is perfect for hallways and landings at night. You can control the strength of the light via the app (min/med/max). As it’s LED I don’t suspect it’ll reduce battery life dramatically. On the app home screen, you get a nice green indicator to show all is OK. You can also use the app to schedule the monthly check the alarm runs itself. It’s a shame you can’t fine tune the time (it offers windows such as 7am – 11am), but it’s a reassuring feature. As is the fact that you can be notified if the alarm goes off remotely which is the major selling point of this. One other feature I was really impressed to see was the option to have the Nest Protect turn off your heating if it detects a CO leak. This only works if you have a Nest Thermostat and whilst it probably won’t help much if there’s a leak, it may offer some precious time. This is a clear example of how much thought goes into Nest products and integration.
I can’t comment on battery life and since it uses alkaline batteries, it can’t monitor how much is left. I assume it will let you know when it is close to running out though. It’s worth noting it uses long life batteries (included) so bear this in mind when replacing them.
Overall, I’m very impressed by the device so far. My only reservation is the price, but when you factor Nest claim it ought to last 10 years, it’s an investment. And the price covers Nest’s costs to offer you that 10 years worth of updates, monitoring via their servers and support. It does feel overkill for what you need, but you’ve probably made your mind up about it if you’ve got this far!
We bought the old model 4 years ago and it randomly went of at 3am and wouldn’t shut up – I gave Nest a call for some advice and it seemed the unit was faulty
It was 4 years old, 2years out of warranty. Without even having to ask they offered to still replace the unit free of charge and upgrade it for me at the same time – despite the fact it was out of warranty
This is the second time we have used their customer service – both times it’s been exceptional and can not fault them at all
We received our replacement (for free) and I bought a second unit, we also have the nest thermostat. All just Work and give you the peace of mind you need
I would highly recommend one
Easy to install as a replacement to wired smoke detectors. High quality and clear instructions.
I purchased two of these to replace hard wired traditional smoke alarms. The installation was easy. You open the box, download the Nest App if you don’t already have it, use your phone to scan the code on the back of each unit and follow the instructions. The units talk to you and tell you what to do. The set up is done before you attach the detectors to your ceiling. I also took photos of the info on the back of each as this won’t be visible when installed. Turn off the mains supply to your existing detectors, remove them and then make sure the centre hole in the ceiling or wall is nearly as big as the central hole in the new nest bracket. You may have to make it a bit bigger. Connect the supply wires to the connectors that come with the nest. These are simple push in connectors, so i didn’t need wire cutters or strippers. My existing smoke detectors were connected to each other (mine was by a black wire). This is not needed as the Nests talk to each other over wifi rather than wire. I just pushed each end back into the ceiling void (the cable only joined one to the other). You then screw the nest back plate to the ceiling with the self tapping screws that come with it. The nest connectors then connect to a small plug that plugs into the back of the nest unit. Push all wires and connectors into the ceiling void (hence the bigger hole) and attach the main Nest unit to the backplate. A small twist secures it. Make sure your ceiling hole allows for this twist. You then switch the mains feed back on and the units will start taking to you again. Follow their instructions to test the units. You may need to press the big button on the unit twice to start this. You can then go back to the nest App and see the units in your list. You do NOT need Nest thermostat, all you need is one or more Nest Protect 2nd Gen and the Nest App, wifi and a smart phone. I have given it 5 stars for easy install and potential but until I see the alarm activated due to burnt toast I don’t know how good it is. I’ll update once I have seen it identify an incident. The product looks like a high quality item. Like top brand phones, the box and packaging is high quality and solid. It gives you confidence if they have designed the packaging so well the item inside is hopefully as high spec. If your wifi or electricity goes down, the units will still work as they have battery backups. They won’t be able to notify your phone without wifi but will still detect and set off alarm if necessary. This is an expensive alarm – and the functionality may be more than you need, but if you want piece of mind when away from home, this is a great idea (if you don’t mind your phone alerting you every time your teenagers burn the toast)
Easy to install as a replacement to wired smoke detectors. High quality and clear instructions.

I found a Youtube video to watch whilst I was waiting for these to be delivered so knew how to remove my old smoke detector and what wires i’d be needing to use.
Upon delivery of the 2 x Nest Smoke detectors, I grabbed a flat head, philips (posi) and small flat head screwdrivers along with my step ladder.
ENSURE YOU TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE SMOKE DETECTORS *NOW*
Install the Nest App from your favourite app store, turn on the smoke detector and scan the QR barcode on the back using your phone’s camera
Remove the old smoke detector
Use the supplied plastic clips to join together the live, earth and neutral. I also had an IC wire (that sends the signal to the other detectors) which was not needed and the installation booklet just said to “isolate” this cable – Luckily I had some Wago clips lying around so used one of them on the IC wire.
Then connect the 2 wires from the Nest smoke detector to the wires you’ve just unplugged from the old one, mount the new ceiling fixing and screw on.
Push the button inside the blue LED and it starts to clearly speak to you.
Job is complete.
Had two to do, the longest thing that took me to do was remove the screw from the old one as it had cemented into the wall plug. Also showed the other shoddy work the builders did in this new-build home 🙁
Look great with lots of functionality
I bought two of these to replace some existing wired fire detectors that had started to malfunction. I must admit I think these are great. They look good, but I was surprised at the features on them. If you already have Nest thermostats then if these units detect Carbon Monoxide they tell the Nest thermostats to turn off the central heating boiler.
They automatically self test (at a time you can specify). They link together wirelessly so you’re told which detector is alarming by name, ie “there is a fire in the kitchen”.
But a great feature is Pathlight, which lights up a dim white light at night to help you find your way round in the dark.
I’d recommend these to anyone, and easy to fit and configure.
I love these. So you are thinking as I was, that is an expensive toy; especially when you can get a smoke alarm for under 10. This, however, is a key part of your smart home protection. The key thing is that you have active monitoring of the location you put it, wherever you are, via the app. You get status alerts for everything and it hooks in with your nest cameras, so if it notices something, the cameras come on too. So, apart from the peace of mind of knowing that your sensors are working, you can have these act as night lights. No need to have a separate hall light for that trip to the loo at midnight. These give a gentle light to guide your way. This light isn’t harsh, it is good enough for you to see your way but not to burn your eyeballs out of their sockets. This nice feature means that I can turn all the lights off downstairs, then go up to bed without having to turn the lights on, these helpfully light my way. I have had battery ones for just over a year without changing the batteries. However, now that I love them (and have bought 4 more), I have gone for wired ones and am using the battery ones in awkward places, like where the boiler is, for extra security. These are great but best to get the whole package (cameras, thermostat and these) for the investment to truly make sense.
Excellent product, easy to setup and the app works really well.
A slight cooking ‘mishap’ created a bit of smoke and the nest protect closest to the kitchen detected it quickly and responded with clear instructions/warnings. It then relays the warning to any other nest protects on your network and tells you exactly which nest protect has detected the smoke.
It’s reassuring to know that you can get a notification wherever you are, as long as you have a data connection. It’s also reassuring that the nest protects do self checks of all their functionality, especially the battery check as it takes the guess work out of when to replace batteries, if you opt for the battery version.

Looks great, reassures me
Looks great and feels a lot more reliable than the cheap ones I got before. One of the previous ones would occasionally detect carbon monoxide even though my flat doesn’t have burning heating or other risk factors. Anyway there was nothing to query after the fact, and it was difficult to tell what had been detected. In this case you get a continuous log from your Nests and I feel more confident that they will work.
Of course the real test would be with actual fire or carbon monoxide, and who knows how it would behave in that situation… But given the craft and engineering that obviously went into this, I feel more confident than with the cheap ones.
So cool!
This is so good compare to the normal smoke alarms! It gives you a heads up when it detects smoke which the alarm won’t suddenly go off. It also gives you a history in the app with time smoke was detected and it was cleared etc etc. You can control the alarm using the app so you don’t need to run to the smoke alarm and try to reach for the ceiling to turn it off.
It was very easy to install! Doesn’t need a drill at all and you can screw the backplate any way you want and when you attach nest protect you can have it in the angle you want.
The pathway light is such a lovely little touch too!
They must be the easiest smart thing I have set up so fa
got three of them one for each floor.
I cheated and set them up using a couple of bus bars wired to a socket. And didn’t pull the battery tab when told to.
They must be the easiest smart thing I have set up so far.
Create the account add he first one, link to wifi and then add the rest. test and your done.
Added bonus is that because the battery isn’t connected yet it tests out the alerting system because you then get a message saying battery low.
Tested them with smoke and steam and it works a treat. CO again was good.
Night light is a brilliant feature means that when I go into the basement I get a light to find the light switch.
I have two nests which I bought once I realised the normal smoke alarms that I had were expired and not actually working. I hadn’t even thought to check until recent news stories brought it to my mind.
The great features about this are:
– The Nest talks to you and explains what’s happening and where (smoke has been detected in the kitchen etc)
– It keeps you up to date for example if the smoke clears it’s tells you the smoke is clearing
– The sound if loud and very clear, it would wake you if you were asleep
– It runs weekly tests that you can schedule once and leave it to do, it announces that it’s a test before hand so you know it’s coming.
– There is an app that you can link to so that you can silence the alarm instead of trying to climb up to the ceiling. You also get notifications when a test is complete or an alarm has triggered so if you are out of the home you know what is happening.
– there is a night light with a motion sensor that can be activated or deactivated, it’s great for in the middle of the night if you or a guess is walking in the corridor.
– You can link the nest to other devices; I’ve linked mine to my smart lights so that if there is an alarm they automatically come on to help with visibility and to wak the house up.
Invaluable Peace of Mind
I have now got 3 of the battery-powered units installed. Have to say that installation and set-up was an absolute doddle and took only a few minutes with clear instructions provided both with the unit and via the app.
Gimmicky? Yes, a little. But also extremely functional at the same time.
The ability to check the units’s self-test history, initiate a test and even check at what times the pathway lights came on during the night, all from your phone, is a boon.
I have been converted and have now bought a Nest Thermostat also which is being installed next week so will be interested to see how it integrates with the Protect units.
All in all, I can whole-heartedly recommend this product.
Decent Product, insufficient Software
Awesome product. Easy to mount and install, easy to set up.
Only issue I have found is the Software. There is no possibility to update the WiFi for the Nest Protect, you have to remove them from your account, and re-add them. This is quite annoying as you have to detach them, rescan the code on the back, add them to your account again, etc.
and a feature we liked was the pathlight feature
We had one of the mains powered units in our house, and a feature we liked was the pathlight feature, so got another to use on a hall way between our rooms. Battery life seems good so far, however an exact reading isn’t given (we’re about 2 months in with full brightness on path light, fairly regularly used and still ok on battery). Dead easy to setup as it grabbed all the settings off our other nest, the apps simple to use and the system really just takes care of itself. installation was simple (backing plate and 4 screws straight into plaster), with an easy twist method to release the nest when the time to change batteries comes. Very happy.
I love my little network of Nest smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. They work perfectly and look great. Last night I was grilling lamb chops and the coloured ring changed, the voice calmly announced that smoke was detected in the kitchen, the alarm might sound and that it would be loud (bless). The alert also popped up on my phone. Doors opened, extractor cranked up and my phone message said “smoke clearing in kitchen”. Absolute genius. These are expensive but in my view they are worth it. Just make sure you get the wired one as the battery only doesn’t conform to building regulations (which begs the question as to how it is able to be sold).
The product and packaging exude quality. I like the little green indicator light and the “nightly promise” flash of green.
I like the little touches like the fact that you don’t have to write down when it expires in about 10 years — it will tell you, and you can see it in the app. Mine expires in July and I bought it in November, so be aware that you won’t get exactly 10 years out of it. According to the manual, once it has expired it will say so and beep twice every minute.
Installation was fairly easy as a DIY newbie. Set up the Nest Protect with my phone, turned off power, verified this with a non-contact voltage tester, removed the old alarm, googled the make to find a manual to confirm which cable was which, connected the cables to the Nest, attached it, then turned power back on.
I had to enlarge the hole in the ceiling a bit to be able to screw it on with its non-centered protruding plug. The most frustrating part was screwing it on to the base on the ceiling. It took a lot of attempts — I think I simply didn’t dare press firmly enough.
If anyone else is also replacing a Firex I1240C: the blue wire is neutral, brown is live, and orange is interlink. No earth. I used one of the provided connector blocks to put the interlink in, just on its own, so as not to leave a loose wire. I couldn’t find a good way to get the cables out of the Firex connector, so I essentially pulled them out by brute force and then re-stripped the ends.
Be aware that the connector blocks don’t seem to have a way of releasing a cable once you’ve pushed them in, so make sure you get it right the first time.
I’m disappointed in the “pathlight” night light functionality — even at the brightest setting, it’s too weak for our ~10 foot (3 meter) ceilings. This brightness would have been acceptable as the lowest setting, but not as the highest. It just about lets you see a bit of the room in the dark, but not nearly as brightly as I had expected.
Overall, I like it, and I think I may get at least one more. At a lower price, I’d happily replace every smoke alarm in the house with the Nest Protect.

After getting one of these through a special offer from my insurance company, I decided to go the whole hog and fit one on every floor. These excellent, compact sensors which were easy to set up and link to the app. The app is easy to use and the sensors seem reliable. I like the fact that the units show a white light when movement is detected close to the device and the lights are off. A good safety feature.
Only one point to be aware of – the connector for the incoming mains wires protrudes considerably beyond the back of the sensor so you need a much bigger hole in the ceiling to avoid damaging the cable when the unit is twisted onto the back plate. Not a great design, especially when the wiring has previously been installed through drilled holes in the joists above.
We already had wired smoke alarms, but they were over 10 years old.
Upgraded to Nest Protect to get CO alarm for extra protection as well, our first foray into the smart Home world.
We did the install of 3 linked alarms ourselves using our existing wiring (we are reasonably competent at electrical diy). Installation was straightforward once we’d worked out how to remove the old alarms. We were fortunate that our old alarms were mounted on a socket back box in the ceiling. The nest back plate is round and has numerous mounting screw holes which made it easy to line up the back plate with existing holes. Be sure to install the app, start up and add your alarms to the app and link them up before mounting them in their final resting place. The alarms then twist onto the back plate.
The alarms do a self test on install.
The instructions supplied are very good and it is a fairly straightforward process.
It is quite reassuring to see the light ring glow green when the light is turned off at night to know that all the alarms are working well.
The light ring also provides a night light (white) that comes on with movement so that you can see your way without turning the main light on.
The warning voice and subsequent alarm are reasonably loud, we have then in the hall and on the landing. Won’t be installing them in other rooms/bedrooms.
The Nest products will work with some smart light bulbs, it is possible to set it up to turn these lights on if the alarm goes off.
Through the app you can check that all your alarms are working ok, and see the last self test info, they test themselves numerous times a day. The alarms also do a full voice test once a month and report back as well.
If there is a problem when you are out/away you will get a notification, which means that you can either pop back home or get a neighbour to check for you, an additional protection for your home.
They are expensive, but for the additional features to a standard smoke alarm do make it worthwhile, these products are new and at the cutting edge of smart Home technology but also easy for a competent diyer to install (saving on installer charges).
Buy with confidence and enjoy a better protected home.
Very effective as I inadvertently tested it two days ago when I was grilling something. It beeped and announced there was smoke in the dining room and continue to flash a red light. I was able to silence it by pressing on it but the red light continue to flash for several minutes until the smoke had cleared and it went to blue and then off. Upon looking at my iPad some minutes later it had also sent several messages but I was in already in the smoke-filled room .
It’s grea
This is great – very sensitive which is good (I tested it with burnt toast) although I’m unsure how to test the CO defection. It’s feally loud and notifications to the app are great too. Very easy to set up.
Only downsides are the size (I didn’t think it would be so wide) and that you can’t hang it on a nail (like all other detectors) and have to use the big mounting plate provided (ie putting 4 screws into your wall or ceiling).
These smoke/Co2 alarms have made me as excited as when I got my PS4! Making safety cool and exciting is no mean feat, but I couldn’t wait to get these installed and start checking out the features and showing them off. They look simply awesome compared to the old smoke alarms, I love that i get alerts to my mobile phone but weirdly, by far the best feature for me is the path-light feature. My son is 3 and regularly wanders about at night, usually to get into bed with me, but this ensure’s he can see where he’s going without turning on lights and such. Equally handy for navigating the hallways at night myself and means I now rarely use the hall light.
Brilliant piece of kit, looks great, the app is easy and concise to use and best of all, I’m 100% confident in the safety of my home for my son and myself, I’ll be buying a third one to go into the kitchen when I have it refitted later this year for the combined Co2 and smoke safety.

Very nice quality, bought one, then five more!
Very much the “Apple” ethos in terms of materials used, build quality and packaging. This was my 2nd attempt with Nest Protect after an aborted attempt to connect a pair to my home network failed miserably a year or so ago….despite many friendly chats with Nest Support, we couldnt get them to join the network. I now have a new router (TPLink Archer vs the previous Asus Dark Knight), so I took a punt and bought another one. Worked like a dream, hooked up within 30s, so ordered 5 more (so far), and recommended to my Parents who bought 3. The only thing to be aware of is that for the mains powered ones, you do need to cut a decent sized hole in the ceiling to lose the electrical connector blocks that you need to use. A decent hole saw makes light work of it, just make sure positioning is spot-on first. Both my Parents and I love the pathlight feature (can be disabled for bedrooms) where it detects movement, and dark, then will light the halo up in white to just give enough light to navigate around; saves switching on a bright hallway/landing light during the night. I also have Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen, which interacts with the Protects in the event of an alarm condition, to instantly switch off central heating and HW. Smart.
Yes it’s expensive for a firealarm, but lets be honest you can’t put a price of your safety right !! Anyway. Easy to install if you have a current wired fire alarm. The system itself comes in a box with all required bits and bobs for install. It’s easy to install yourself, just make sure you switch off the current firealarms from the mains. Install should take around 15 mins per alarm. Once installed it’s a brilliant bit of kit. Warnings are clear, giving you plenty of time to act on them (my wife love cooking pancakes and is regulary smoking the kitchen out, newt gives us a warning there’s smoke and that we need to act on it or she’s going to set an alarm off, the beauty is also that it warns you on other Nests as well. So if she is smoking the downstairs out I hear an alarm on the upstairs one letting me)
Cannot recommend this enough.
I took the plunge and purchased one of these smoke / carbon monoxide detectors a few weeks ago to replace my old smoke alarm and portable carbon monoxide detector. Yes you pay a small premium for this type of gadget but certainly don’t mind when it is this good a package and outweighed by the safety features.
* I was very impressed with how easy it was to install. I expected it to take 15mins+ but was installed in less than 2 minutes and setup ready to use 2 minutes later! I do love my gadgets and happy to tinker with them to get them working but was wish every setup was this easy! Nest have led the way, it really was as easy as 1,2,3!
* Once you register with Nest, an app is used to monitor and setup the device.
* The alerts include such gems as “Warning, Smoke detected in the kitchen” I like this feature as it alerts you to 1) The cause b) The location, rather than just beeping.
* The alarm notices that the lights have gone out and illuminates green to show everything is okay for peace of mind.
* And if it detects movement below it, the status light changes to white and provides enough white ‘glow’ to provide a night/escape light. I really like this feature, as it provides enough light to get me up the stairs without another light source being used.
Overall very happy with this alarm and recommend it to anyone.
Simple but great produc
Fantastic product, presents well, feels immediately good quality. Easy to set up, no problem encountered. Quite sensitive, small amount of smoke from overzealous cooking triggers the preliminary alarm, but silence itself if smoke starts clearing up.
I have 2 protects at the moment and they communicate nicely and it is great that the voice indicates where the problem might be.
I have them integrated with Philips hue and it is great that you get an additional light alarm and light colour change to get you through the smoke easier.
Great integration with Smartphone app, so you can be alerted should a fire start in the house while you are away, no really point having smoke detectors that nobody can hear if you are out.
No native integration with Samsung Smartthings, although community made code can make integration possible if you are so inclined.

Smart Smoke Signal Security
Firstly, the un-boxing was a treat since the packaging and presentation are glorious. Installation was a breeze for anyone who can screw a screw and operate a smart phone. The only issue I have with this product is whether I can rely on my home and mobile data connection to tell me that there has been smoke detected.
A little bonus I noticed the night after installation was that it detects motion at night and puts on a courtesy LED. Nice touch.
For my money this product is worth the premium over a regular smoke alarm though I do still run the old alarms as back-up.
It works brilliantly! No more waving a tea towel at the smoke alarm when cooking and no more testing with the end of a broomstick.
The unit was however far trickier to install than I anticipated. Other alarms I’ve used have always had a space in the back to house the wiring. This unit doesn’t, so the wiring has to be hidden away somewhere else. This required me to chisel away a significant amount of plaster work on my ceiling and made it very difficult to make everything fit.
Easy replacement, sits quietly and does what it’s supposed to do..
It’s reassuring to be able to hear the test features for each unit and also look on the history to see it’s carrying out its own checks on its sensors.
We really like the courtesy light at night, we used to turn on lights in the hall and on the landing but don’t need to now.
Great product but very expensive and time will tell if they are worth the onitial outlay.
Excellent, don't hesitate, just buy.......
This is exactly as expected and in short, excellent. Very easy to fit and child’s play to setup, it really is. Yes it seems expensive for what it is but it is just no fuss and does not go off at the slightest nat’s fart!
It did recently trigger due to smoke from cooking and the whole process was amazing, no screaming alarm to make you need to change your pants, but a mellow ‘pre-warning’ voice that the alarm has detected smoke and will likely go off which was then simple to silence. Oh and that was all backed up with a notification to all the phones connected to it.
Would I buy it again, absolutely without a doubt, in fact there is another sitting in my basket right now to replace another make of alarm for another part of our house.
Having both smoke and CO2 in the one device is just the cherry on top of the cake.
When I was woken at 3 a.m. the other morning by my smoke alarm complaining that its battery was running low, I decided it was time for a more sophisticated solution. And this is — at so many levels.
First, the physical features. It may sound strange but it actually looks nice. Mounted on a ceiling, it doesn’t shout out its presence but, to the extent that you notice it, it’s quite attractive. So far as fixing is concerned, you don’t have to line up the backplate very precisely because, once you’ve aligned its lugs with those on the alarm, you can turn the unit as far as you like. Also, the unit is supplied with self-tapping screws that need no pre-drilling to mount it in a dry-lined wall or conventional ceiling.
Next, the set-up. This is a breeze. Download the Nest app to your phone, follow the instructions. You’ll need access to the back of the unit, because the app scans a QR code that’s located there to register the device. But it automatically launches your camera to do that, so it’s a doddle.
Finally, the operation. I won’t list all the Protect’s features, which are pretty exhaustive, and can be found on any of the technical review sites anyway. Suffice it to say that the app is well-designed and reliable, allowing you to control and respond to the alarm from your phone. So, for instance, you can do a monthly test by hitting the ‘Protect’ button on the app home screen and following the prompts. This will update the log, so you can see the dates and results of all previous tests. There are also some nice little touches. The light ring around the alarm’s central button lights up (white) if you walk under it in the dark; and it gives you a brief green glow when you turn the lights out at night to confirm it’s functioning correctly.
So is it worth it? Well, you could buy half a dozen standard CO/Smoke alarms for the same money. But they only warn you of a fire you’re close to anyway. This will tell you there’s a problem at home wherever you are and what room it’s in, if you have several installed. And it will launch your phone app with the emergency number pre-selected for a quick call to the fire brigade. That’s a lot of reassurance for 25p a week (based on a 7-year lifespan), quite apart from the sheer convenience of the thing. As with any insurance, you pays yer money and you takes yer choice…
Nests keeps the Family Safe
Initially purchased The Nest Stat to remotely control my holiday rental cottage heating & hot water and after several months of satisfactory use purchased 4 Nest Protect units which worked great and gives guests a feeling of security. Thereafter purchased Nest indoor camera and received a discount from my insurers and finally bought the outfoor camera which is not only good for security but also for checking the weather.
All in all a very satisfactory trouble free product and gives the rental cottage a wee bit of a high tech feeling and comfort knowing the system is functioning correctly in the back ground.
I’ve obviously upgraded my own home to a similar standard and no where in the world I can’t connect and switch my heating on/off, quite proud of myself really not forgetting the good folks at Nest of course!
Next Generatio
Received in time for a quick setup and test, which takes only 10 or 15 minutes.
Beware that you need to be able to give access to Nest to your network and allow the monitoring on-line. Not sure about security here.
The device feels like a quality item. So it should, it’s expensive for a smoke and carbon dioxide detector.
Nice to have a human voice warn you rather than a loud screeching beep. Also, a good plus is that there is no on-going monitoring fee, unlike Nests other devices.
This is a good product and well made. Have bought two of these, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. It’s a great idea they talk to each other so if an alarm is generated we know what it is and where it is to help get out of the house by a safe route. It’s a pity it’s on the expensive side but can’t fault the features you find with this compared to others so you get what you pay for. Having had these wouldn’t be without them
Top-notch. This feels like a quality product from the minute you start to unpack it – everything has the sort of quality feel you get with Apple products, with lots of thought gone into how it is packaged, documented, everything. All the wiring and connectors are included for replacing an existing mains-power smoke alarm, although I needed to cut a bigger hole so I could push the connector blocks back up into the ceiling cavity – there is little to no allowance for scrunching up any excess cable on the upper surface of the smoke alarm itself, so everything needs to be pushed through as much as possible.
Once installed, everything else is done through the Nest app on your phone, and setup was simple and straightforward. It started delivering daily activity and test reports after 24 hours, and the Pathlight feature is appreciated by the family.
The Alarm was reasonably easy to install with very clear instructions
More expensive than a standard alarm, but well worth the extra money. It has some clever features, including connectivity with other Nest products. The Alarm was reasonably easy to install with very clear instructions. Be prepared to cut/widen holes in the ceiling to accommodate the wiring and connectors (if you choose the wired alarm). There is no room between the ceiling and the fixing plate/alarm to accommodate wiring. Also, as the shape of the Alarm is square and not round like most alarms it will replace, be prepared for a little ceiling painting to cover exposed areas. Like all nest products it is very stylish and beautifully packaged. It Arrived really quickly via Amazon Prime.
Perfect replacement for aging basic units that are due for replaceme
This device is perfect for what it’s designed to do. It’s helpful in itself, and the accompanying software from Nest for your phone or PC works just as well. It’s a nicely designed unit, substantail feeling with a great build quality. Installation is a doddle, providing you’ve already got the mains connection available for it to use. Pull out the piece of plastic preventing the batteries from connecting to the unit to power it on (do this BEFORE installation to the mains), and run through the setup process (the reason you do this before mounting to the ceiling is that there’s a QR code on the back that you need to scan with the mobile app in order to register the device as yours on your account). Voice prompts go through a test routine, and then it instructs you to complete installation. My old detector had 3 wires connected to it – Live, Neutral and Interconnect. Nest Protect doesn’t use the interconnection wire as it’s all done wirelessly, so that can be cut back and insulated. Simply screw the backplate to the ceiling or wall, use the provided connector blocks (which are also great quality) to make the relevant connections for the provided wiring harness to Live and Neutral. Plug the harness into the device and clip the device to the ceiling. That’s it!
As far as day to day use goes…it’s just a smoke/CO detector. But so much more advanced than the cheaper tat you can buy. It self-tests several times a day, and when you switch the lights off the ring glows green to let you know everything’s OK. It’ll also activate a white ring which is a “pathlight” so you can find your way around in the dark.
This replaced one of my old mains based smoke alarms, and I’ll shortly be buying another to replace the second one.
All in all, highly recommended.
Feathering my Nest.
Bought to replace a number of ancient standard alarms and being impressed by quality and effectiveness of my new Nest Thermostat. This too is excellent quality construction. Cutting the story short,I struck 4 matches in an adjoining room and blew them out immediately generating a small amount of smoke. Yes you guessed it-the Nest picked this up and issued a warning. I am very impressed at how sensitive this equipment is and if the cost is considered over a 10 year period (the life of these sensors), the safety aspect makes them excellent value. In addition of course, my phoned warned me the sensor had activated and all the other smart features of the Nest came into play. Very satisfied.
Smart smoke and carbon monoxide unit by Nest...
The best thing I like about the unit is the curtosy nightlight on my staircase when I get up during the night. It’s not one of those strong lights but calm enough to light the way if required. It looks great , larger of course than your standard units, but certainly not ugly or out of place in any home. The fact that you can be alerted when you’re away is a massive plus too. A valued part of my smart home equipment. And it states replace by 2026 giving it 10 years of protection for under 90. A little price for such an item over 10 years of looking after my family don’t you think?
Fantastic produc
Superb bit of kit, ordered both battery and wired versions. Setup was simple and fast. Wired connections are push connectors so even that is easy. Night Light feature is incredible, so simple yet effective… if you need to nip to the loo during the night there’s no need to switch on the hall light lol. I reckon I’ve pushed the test button more times on the units, just to hear the smooth voice, more times than all my other detectors combined.
The notifications are a great feature. Not recommended but I carried out a small smoke test, both units change colour and start the audible warning. This is followed be a very calm voice telling you that smoke has been detected, it also tells you where. Within seconds you receive a text alert with all the info, this can also be backed up with an SOS call direct to the emergency services.
All in all, great bit of kit… way more expensive than your average smokey but when you considered the ifs and buts, it’s pretty cheap.
An amazing product which brings a smoke detector to a complete new level.
I have been so impressed with this product that I went and bought 2 more. You can schedule them to run a full test at a time that suits you, so let’s say once a month between 11:00 and 16:00. The device check itself continuously and sends you a report on your phone. What attracted me to it was the fact you are able to mute it with your phone if it goes off. I got so fed up with being waken up in the middle of the night for a false alarm (often triggered by bugs or spiders getting into the smoke alarm) or because the battery was running low. The Nest Protect also acts as a night light and turns itself on when it senses movement near it. The lady voice is also a very cool feature. It relies on your WiFi when you set it up but then works completely fine without it, just in case you were wondering what would happen if the internet was down or you had a power cut and a fire starts. It also tells you whereabout in the house the problem lies. All in all, it is pricey but it is a very good product.
Quality peace of mind
I always check out a product for a while if it’s new to me and I did that here with the Nest Protect. I liked the features and what it does so ordered one and I’m not disappointed. From the moment you open the box it’s quality all the way with the packaging materials and the way it’s packed so neatly. The product itself just looks so good well constructed & finished off. Instructions are easy to read & understand & it’s simple to set up once you’ve downloaded the app. Just be aware it’s loud when you test it ok! & it’s the first one that’s ‘talked’ to me that all is good to go! The night light option is a beautiful soft sheen glow to aid night time visits to the bathroom, just brilliant! Plus this one doesn’t set alarm off because you’re using the toaster! Bonus points there!
Get one they’re brilliant, yes they’re expensive but with longevity guaranteed & noticefication on your phone/tablet for alerts I think they’re worth it!
The New Watchdog!
After reading most of the reviews and articles, it seemed a logical choice to move onto a ‘smart’ alarm when the old one died.
We already had a Nest thermostat so it was a very easy addition to the app and family of devices.
I am not one to dabble with electricals (one for certification reasons and two I’m just scared of the damn stuff) but with the very simple instructions and diagrams, even I managed to swap out the old husk for this shiny new friend.
My only criticism is that the only diagram shows an alarm on a ring circuit. We live in a small flat with only one alarm so we only had single connections. A brain figured it out so no issues, but it would have reduced time by 10 mins or so.
So far, the protect has been stable and happy with the nightlight feature being the perfect addition to the hallway.
We are also both vapers (ex-smokers) and the alarm hasn’t reacted once. Which is good.
Pretty good but can get bette
The product itself is very professionally made and probably works very well and there in lies the slight problem. There’s no way of actually testing that the detector will inform me via the app when it detects smoke/CO. It would be nice if when the test function is activated, it sent a message to the app so I have some peace of mind that it’s all working. The instructions strongly discourage testing with real smoke, so I’m waiting to see that it does actualy inform me (on the app) in the event of being activated.
The other small issue is with the ridiculously over zealous password enforcement. The password had to be more complex than required by my bank accounts and given that this is a password I’ll probably only use once every couple of years or so (when I change phones), I have zero percent chance of remembering it.
Otherwise, this is a nice, if slightly expensive product.
Very good but not grea
I like this piece of kit – I wanted it just so I could receive an alert on my phone if anything was wrong. Watch the video under the images section of the product description, it is impressive. I only gave it 4 stars however as the app software I feel could do more and for the price I wasn’t amazingly impressed with the functionality – I thought some level of further innovation would be cool. Also the fact that it needs replacing in 10 years makes was a bit odd I found – surely technology now a days isn’t disposable for that price? Maybe its just me
Great product.
It’s a shame that I this product isn’t available in Australia so more people are aware of its existence. It great and the communication feature between devices is fantastic. The price maybe a concern for most people but it’s worth the money. The fact that I can get notifications if there is a problem at my house while I’m out is worth it for peace of mind. Also that may be an issue for some is the life span of 10 years but let’s be honest it’s better that you change it in 10 years time and be assured that they are working than have units that are old and the only thing that has been changed is the batteries every few years.
For what it’s worth I recommend the nest protect and the other nest products.
Amazing product, glitchy app, below standard email support.
It’s great and works very well, I went for the wired version which was easy to install, we did however have an issue with hiding away the cabling in the ceiling as the size of the connectors are supposed to sit in a plastic casing in the ceiling which most UK houses do not have. In the end we had to make quite a large hole in the ceiling to accommodate the power lead, but it was a small price to pay for such a good product.
The product itself is flawless but the app needs some bug testing as isn’t great and struggles to load data. No issues on the browser site though.
The customer services responses via email aren’t great either, they used templated Salesforce responses which are erroneous and I would have expected better from a premium brand.
I would’ve given five stars but the customer experience relating to aftersales support is pretty poor. I hope they improve it.
Only downside is that it's not round!
I wanted a smoke alarm that I could remotely turn off with my phone, before it went off and woke the dead – it works perfectly for this. It also integrates nicely with my other nest products meaning that I don’t have to worry about multiple apps on my phone.
Slightly annoying that it’s not round – it does mean that if you’re fussy about appearances you need to put some effort into ensuring that you screw it to the ceiling square. With a little planning that’s easy enough – but the instructions didn’t provide many tips on how to get it square to the room.
These are great. I now how 3 second gen smoke alarms (2 wired and one battery) and 1 first gen smoke alarm. They are fairly straightforward to setup however i had a few issues trying to discover the NEST network it asks you to connect too. Eventually standing closer to the original device solved the issue.
Once connected they all link together so if the kitchen downstairs detects smoke. The voice comes on upstairs telling you “There’s smoke in the kitchen” and on every other device. The testing functionality is great as it tests smoke and carbon monoxide separately and repeats the process on other devices without having to go to each one.
The nightlight function is great. You can have this on all the time at night or on when it detects movement. Beats a night light plugged in at floor level. With the smoke alarm on the ceiling it lights up the whole landing enough to see where you are going but not enough to disturb you when sleeping.
Changing wifi networks or changing passwords once set up was a nightmare. I eventually had to remove all devices and add them all again. Overall its great peace of mind. Although expensive to buy its great to be alerted on your phone if there are issues.
Esay to use good produc
The nest protect is very easy to use
Pro
1. Different sounds for carbon monoxide and a fire.
2. It tells you and the children what is happening which when we do a fire drill is when I burn the food the children shoutout fire.
The night light is good and let’s you more about without putting lights on
3. Tells you once a month how it’s going.
4.app is easy to use and setup really good step by step instructions.
Not so good
1. Fitting is easy but abit tight if replacing from old system
2. If you install one of your 2 smoke alarms you have to reword the other to stop it going off
Review
This is a good product that’s easy to use and makes the hole house feel safe my 3 year old knows what’s happening and told me he likes the new system which says it all really
Hope this helps
It's a Beauty!
Well having had a Nest thermostat in my previous house in the USA and now back home in the UK I just had to have Nest again, now have the Thermostat up and running here and needed a few smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to remain in compliance with today’s laws. Looked at Nest again and without hesitation purchased two of the battery alarms.
Certainly not disappointed, now I know they are much more expensive than other alarms but these are classy, come with voice alerts, you can control on your smart phone and they test themselves, what more could you ask for.
Placing them in the living room and kitchen was a breeze, check the pictures out.
Will certainly be looking at the Nest Cam next 🙂
Worth a purchase, even if expensive… Highly Recommended..
Great alarm but fiddly to fi
I’m a bit of a traditionalist so I like the smallest possible cavities behind anything on my ceiling (let’s face it at some point it gets replaced and you don’t want a gaping hole to fill). Sadly the power connector for the wired alarm protrudes about 1.5 to 2cm out of the back of the alarm. Further more the alarm is twist to secure to the backing plate. This means a sizable hole in the ceiling is required to fit the alarm. Once fitted it looks very smart and works well. Just a shame more thought wasn’t given to the connector!
Had a Fireangel Smoke Alarm previously, and it’s claims of 10yr battery life fell short by a factor of 7x (in the bin after 14 months). Decided to go for one of these, Yes, it’s quite a bit more the reason why I got it were:
Replaceable batteries
Wifi connected, so you will get alerts when not at home
Carbon Monoxide detection
Very impressed, very easy to install, and very slick operation. Feels like a massively high quality bit of kit. I already have a Nest Learning Thermostat which has paid for itself many times over, so it’s no surprise that Nest have made something as mundane as a smoke detector and impressive feat of engineering. Well done Nest/Google.
2017 Edit:
My original is still working excellently, given the recent tragic events, I decided to replace my other garbage (and dangerous) FireAngel with another Nest Protect, this time for the upper floor, where it’s easier to get to the wiring above, so I went for the mains powered unit this time around. The mains unit still has batteries of course for backup purposes (that’s a legal requirement). I have knocked a star off this time, a whilst the battery unit is for sure a 5 star unit, the mains unit has a design flaw. The mains connector on the tip of the unit protrudes from the base and is offset from centre, and as the unit is a twist to fit, it means you have to make a very big hole in your ceiling, the full diameter of the offset mains connector. They could have easily, i’m sure, made it either flush, or if not, more central to reduce the size of the hole needed in your ceiling whilst fitting. Aside from this, it’s still an awesome product.
Protection Protected
Its easy to install and use. I bought one and replaced my mains powered fire detector. I have a normal Nest thermostat. It was easy to screw into the ceiling (lucky I had one already there with the holes drilled already). The actual screwing of the detector onto the mounting plate was tricky when the power feed was connected. It just needed a bit of tidying up and poking up into the ceiling space. Then it fitted ok. The detection sticker is actually on the “base” of the detector. The part that fits on the ceiling, so please remember to pair it using your phone/tablet before fitting to the ceiling mount! And if you are getting a load of WiFi problems, don’t screw it in until you have sorted it out 🙂
Great piece of ki
Extremely easy to setup – apart from the manual doesn’t mention that the protect can’t connect to a 5Ghz wireless network, but once that was sorted everything went well. Looks great on the ceiling (is white despite looking silver in all the pictures) and the night time promise is great. When you turn the lights off it briefly glows green to tell you everything is ok!
App on iPhone is very intuitive and everything just works.
Not given it 5 stars as its an expensive smoke/Co2 alarm – but bear in mind this lasts 10 years, and most others on the market say replace after 5 years.
Quick update, one of these units kept going off when I had a shower, but the others were fine, so I contacted Nest who immediately swapped it for me, customer service was excellent and the replacement arrived the next day.
Worth every penny
Excellent piece of kit – this is actually the first review I have ever written, as few products have impressed me this much! Installed as a straight swap from my previous wired smoke detectors, seems very well thought through, from the setup, the warnings, a weekly self test, plus is much louder than my previous ones, which I see as an advantage for a smoke alarm! Love the fact that it covers carbon monoxide too.
Notifications on my iPhone work perfectly, so am considering getting a camera to be able to check the house remotely too.
Now strongly thinking about getting more Protects for the kids rooms, as seems a small price to pay for piece of mind.
Peace of mind while you're out of the house
We bought this smoke alarm primarily for the ability to receive notifications on our phone(s) if smoke or carbon monoxide was detected at our home in our absence.
It’s a very clever unit that will self-test, warn you of slight smoke without the disturbance of a loud alarm (unless the smoke builds), and even lights up the hallway as you walk under it at night-time.
A close second to improved family safety is the kudos you get when your smoke alarm politely and clearly warns you that it has detected a slight build-up of smoke when your friends are over; you may have burnt their lunch but they’ll forgive you for having such a cool smoke alarm.
The device is good, looks good
The device is good, looks good, functions well and I’m generally happy with them. However; the base, connection lead and socket has clearly been designed by someone that has never held a screw driver in their life. It makes installation very awkward unless you have a new build house with a plasterboard ceiling with a dry lining box installed. As i have a lath and plaster ceiling installation was a pain. However, now that that minor nightmare is over they are very good.
Essential Protection from a cool product (A must for tech lovers)
I have been looking at these for a while, as I needed 3 I couldn’t decide if I should make the investment or not – especially given my current smoke alarms are only just a year old and worked just fine.
I love technology and after about 3 weeks I had made the decision just to go for it. So I ordered 3 units which arrived the next day.
These are a pleasure to unbox, like an Apple product, you can see everything has been well thought through (I believe some of the Nest employees are ex-apple hence the comment)
Good quality instructions (would have been handy if the wiring diagram had been in colour) but fairly straight forward and I am no electrical expert.
I uninstalled my old units and followed the instructions in the Nest book and I had these all up and running and connected to each other within 40 minutes.
They look so much sleeker than the old units, a much snugger fit to the ceiling. With the easy fit bracket and twist on fitting of the main head unit, there are something even a novice could feel comfortable putting up.
They are all linked together and talk to each other, you can give each sensor a name and they will call themselves by a number of pre-determined names, such as Hallway, Kitchen, Upstairs.
Love the feature of “pathlight” which illuminates white light at night, this can me motion activated or set to permanently on, the children love this feature too.
Technology that is essential in protecting your home but is also cool!
Very happy with the purchase
great but pricey
This is a great, but really, really expensive smoke alarm.
There is no way to square this circle, I could buy a smoke alarm for a fiver and it would wake me up if my house was on fire. Carbon Monoxide alarms are similarly inexpensive.
This is internet connected… OK
It links to my Nest thermostat apparently – I havent seen any evidence of that
When its dark and you walk past it lights up – nice feature
When it senses increasing smoke, it talks to you and lets you silence it – very nice.
It’s cool, but very expensive.
Very cool, needs careful installation though
Very cool product. Easy to setup and the alerting is phenomenal. The only negative is the back-plate is crazy fragile, meaning you can easily drive the screw heads through the plate leaving you with a massive paper-weight. Nest provide spares but you have to wait an age to receive them.
Whilst this mistake is user error, I would expect a 89 smoke alarm to be made of more sturdy stuff.
Of the 3 I bought, 2 are installed and communicating with each other. So they work, well. I recommend them, just don’t be ham-fisted when screwing the plate into the ceiling.
I would have given this product 5 stars but despite ordering a wired version I was sent a battery only version of the product. I have kept it as it allowed me to locate it in a slightly better position in my hallway. Easy to set up and link to my Nest account which allows me to monitor alongside my Nest thermostat (another excellent product and simple to use). I also really like the fact the Nest Protect product provides a night light when you pass under it in the dark.
Not just a smoke alarm
Carbon monoxide and smoke alarm yes, but much more than that as well. Motion sensitive night light, self check functions, spoken-word alarms and warnings as well as spoken guidance when setting up.
Really amazing bit of kit. When used in conjunction with the Nest thermostat they can be used as sensors to detect if you’re in the house or not so the Thermostat can go into Auto-Away mode and turn off your heating.
Any alarms etc can be found on your mobile phone and the Nest App gives you access to the information from all the Nest devices from anywhere in the world.
Probably one of the best purchases we have made for a long time
Not Bad but expensive.
This unit was easy to install, relatively simple to configure but has already dropped of the wireless network for a few days without warning.
There was no useful help for getting it to reconnect and in the end I restarted the BT Home Hub which was not able to see the Nest device at all.
The reboot fixed the problem but restarting your wifi access point was NOT one of the listed solutions on the Nest Support site.
Other than that it is a nice looking device and the ability to lightly illuminate the dark hallway at night when you head off to bed has become an added bonus for everyone in the house.
Still need to see how long that battery will hold up with that trick enabled.
Otherwise a fairly decent product, although only an actual “trial by fire” will prove its worth 😉
Expensive, but quality kit!
Still early days but so far so good – I ordered one first to try out but have just ordered a few more to fully kit out the house and one for the garden workshop. I like the idea that the one in the workshop will be able to communicate with both the others and my phone etc, and also opens up the option to shut down power to the machines when the alarm detects a problem with further home automation accessories
It’s expensive for a fire alarm, but it’s great that it also includes CO detection and it’s a start down the road for me towards home automation. I love the path light feature – very useful for the hallway alarms when you are sneaking around at night to go to work or use the loo! The detector is packaged very nicely, gives a good impression of quality and includes some little wire plugs for the wired version which makes hooking up to the mains a breeze.
Ignore some of the bad reviews on here – they are clearly intended for the first gen alarms which had some notorious issues… these haven’t been out long enough for someone to have had problems months ago. No signs of any problems yet on the 2nd generation but time will tell!
Highly recommended for the gadget lover!
Well, where to begin… Is this a lot of money? sure, but is it worth it? that may depend on whether you have a love of gadgets or not! On the face of it this is an expensive smoke and CO detector, but to someone who owns more than one Nest product or someone who is looking for a “connected home” this is just what your after.
It is well built and very simple to set up. I am an electrician and installed the 230V version with absolute ease, The instructions are very clear and concise and the Protect is set up before it goes up onto the ceiling.
It is set up by downloading the Nest app which serves as the place you can deal with all you rNest products if you have more than one. From there you make an account and add the product by scanning the QR code on the back of it. You then run through some quick settings and your done!
I like the pathway feature which can illuminate when you walk under it or can stay illuminated the whole time it is dark. I was hoping to have this replace leaving a light on, however its not bright enough for my liking, so a nice feature but for me it could have been brighter.
If you have the Nest thermostat it also has a feature where if the Nest Protect detects CO the Thermostat will shut off the boiler. Again nice little touches.
I also like the touch that you can connect it to Phillips Hue bulbs, so you could for example have them flash red upon an alert or come on at full brightness to light your path.
Overall, yes its expensive but its well tied in to other Nest products and other things like Phillips Hue and it has a CO and smoke detector built in. I’d say its worth the money for the gadget loving homeowner.
If it is half of its current price, I will give it 5 stars
Expensive – that’s why it got 4 stars from me. I have the wired version, pretty simple to install myself. It only needs the 230v wires (Live and Neutral). The first one took me about 40 min, as I need to study the instruction manual. The 2nd one took me about 15 to 20 minutes. Most of those time were spending on taking the old smoke detectors out! My house is only about 20 years old, so wiring wasn’t difficult.
It does look better, then any other smoke detector, plus the night light function, makes it slightly more useful than others. The night light function is not bright (I sent it to the brightest), just enough light to see things.
As for the smoke detector functions – it says not to test it with flames. So far nothing triggers it yet, I will just have to trust it works.
Firstly its a smoke alarm! Hard to get too excited 🙂 However its a great piece of engineering, incredibly easy to install, that includes fitting to the roof, and looks very swish.
These products give you a glimpse into the (promised) future of the internet of things (IoT) that seems to be taking an age to ever take off. For example if it detects a CO2 leak it will tell the nest thermostat to shut off. It tells your Hue bulbs that you have gone out and the bulbs then randomly turn on and off to simulate presence in the house. All clever stuff.
As for its main purpose its an advancement, voice instructions are much better than a basic alarm also in my opinion the best feature is how they link up. For example smoke in the kitchen, my upstairs alarm says smoke detected in the kitchen.
