Nearly perfect. Love the sound and features. The truebass is surprising good, and it's so nice to toggle on and off depending on the song. Bottom line is that it's an amazing DAC. The amp portion is also very good, though I still use and prefer my separate THX AAA headphone amp.

Got this to connect laptop to stream Amazon Music on HD through an Echo Studio speaker. Sounds absolutely amazing. Studio speaker too big for desk though so now just using a Echo 4th Gen: still sounds incredible. Well worth it.

Incredible improvement over standard laptop audio outpu
I bought this to get better sound when using headphones to listen to music from my XPS 13 laptop. I typically use iTunes for source material and listen using either Sennheiser HD 280 Pro / HD 380 Pro or Grado SR125. I haven’t listened to other DACs/headphone amps before so can’t compare to other such units, but can attest to the STUNNING improvement over the 3.5mm headphone output on my XPS 13. Nothing short of life-changing!

Subjectively, as a consumer of other high-end electronics (I consider myself an audiophile and generally seek high-quality products via extensive research), this unit seems well designed and solidly built. Buttons and nobs feel good, input/outputs are thoughtfully laid out. iFi website information and documentation also appears very complete and reflects a high level of engineering and industry/technology knowledge.

Very impressive and high quality unit. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to improve laptop audio quality.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAbsolutely Excellent... for balanced outpu
This DAC/AMP is fantastic. I was using it with Spotify for a while, then decided to try Tidal, and WOW, what a difference. Everything is crystal clear, for someone like me, a beginner audiophile, this sounds incredible.

I am listening to this iFi Zen on a pair of HiFiMans Sundara’s, with a balanced cable, and for the money spent, its an incredible combo. If you are looking for the best audio experience for under $600, this combo will not be beat.

Oh, ALSO, the bass button is great. Some songs need it, others don’t, so its great to have the quick toggle within arm’s reach. Excellent integrated pre-amp bass boost.

The quality of the material here is excellent too, and the volume knob feels premium and smooth.

The only downside some may have is the housing design, but thats a subjective take.

Ultimately, do you want balanced output for your phones? Then get this. I should note, that phones don’t need balanced output and its basically just a luxury that allows more power delivery, not more sound quality.

    Great dac
    It sounds amazing
only cons are that it bypasses windos volume control
and theres no way to switch output from speaker to headphones
you just have to turn off your speakers
but im super happy with this thing after all its the sound that maters

Wonderful performance for a reasonable price
Was expecting this DAC to be good value for money but was pleasantly surprised just how good it is. Powers my (Shure SRH 1840) headphones without any problems and easy to connect up to either IPad/IPhone or pc.
Well designed and surprisingly well built for such a device at this price point. Audio quality is nicely balanced with good clarity and dynamics. There are better DACs but I think you would have to pay much more to match the performance of this little wonder. Must be a candidate for one of the best value audio products I have ever brought.

I purchased the ifi Zen dac, primarily to improve the sound of the new Eris 3 pc monitor speakers. This it did with resulting noticeable improvement in most every aspect of the sound performance in the small pc monitor speakers. Now, comes the kicker. After hooking up my YBA integrated amp (audiophile quality) via some good quality RCA cables to the ifi Zen dac with LSA bookshelf speakers, the sound is in fact overall better than using the YBA integrated amp and YBA cd player ( both $1500 stereo components ). Even at low volume levels, details to recordings are being revealed like never before. In fact the ifi Zen dac has given my reference stereo system with the YBA separates and the LSA bookshelf speakers a new lease of life. Streaming from spotify and youtube is so much easier to load and play music with so little effort. The LSA speakers garnered so much praise in the audiophile press a decade ago. By adding the ifi Zen dac , the speakers are almost spookily coherent up an down the frequency range. All in all, this ifi Zen dac , though not cheap, provides value driven ROI for your sound needs. So much so it will put a smile on the face of even the most picky audio enthusiast.

This is a great headphone amp. Well built and heavy so it doesn’t move around when you do. You can read about all of the technical aspects and watch YouTube videos reviewing it. My issue was that I ordered a balanced cable to replace the terrible short unbalanced cable that came with my Focal Celeste phones because my Zen Dac V2 provides the choice. The unbalanced output jack was perfect. The balanced 4.4mm jack was finicky. I had to play with the plug to get it to seat correctly, as the sound would go in and out. Amazon is delivering a replacement tomorrow. I’ll update after I get the new one to make sure it all works properly and it was just a quirk of my unit.

Great value DAC for use with Volumio/Tidal
Im using this DAC connected to a mini pc running Volumio so I can access Tidal connect. Works well and does full MQA unfold so get all the high resolution tracks through to my hifi. Sounds great, just sits there and does its thing, no problems at all. Would recommend it if your planning on doing something similar. Great value for money and we’ll built!

This is an excellent DAC for music, movies and gaming.
100% recommend it, just be aware that the internal amp tops out at 300 wats so depending on the headphones you have you may need to pair it with the ZEN CAN amp.
The ordering experience was excellent I have no complaints about it.

I purchased this back in December 21. It did not come with power plug. I went to the store and bought one and using that one the sound sounded very congested. I ordered a jamco 5 volt power chord. Sound opened up and it's improved greatly. If you decide to get a new 3.0 USB I bought five of them and found that Amazon worked the best.

Good DAC, software is functional, tech support team was not helpful
Connectivity is easy and once you get up and running sound quality is good. I have many 16/44.1, 24/96, 24/192, and DSF albums that I stream regularly with no decode issues.

I combined this with the iFi Xen Stream – And the software for the Stream is not super smart and appears to have issues with Android 12. I couldn’t follow setup instructions as printed. I did contact tech support and their solution was for me to use another device to setup and use. DAC is solid and can be used PC direct or with other devices. No issues with the DAC and not planning to buy others due to sound or decode issues.

Support ticket system is lame, and the support I received was more of a blow off than constructive debug & problem solving.

Great DAC+Amp for sennheiser HD 650
Previously I had eperience only with fiio k5 and fiio k3 in this price range. iFi ZEN DAC V2 together with HD 650 provides much better sound quality for my taste. “Truebass” feature is extremely useful with HD650 if you are missing some low frequencies in a track. For this scenario with just a headphones you don’t need any external power supply.

The only problem is with RCA line out connection to a power amplifier – there is a noise coming from +5V USB power supply. It can be significantly improved by using external power source but not eliminated completely

Great headphone amp if you don’t use streaming, e.g. Tidal
For the price this is a real giant killer. I bought this on a whim, thinking it could hold me over in case my other DAC/amp ever needed to be sent away for service. That other unit is the Naim DAC-V1, which went for about $3,000 new. I was surprised to find that in some ways the Zen sounds superior to the Naim. The Zen, in comparison, has a more natural, analog sound that is less fatiguing to my ears, with better detail in the highs, and a dead quiet noise floor. On the other hand, Compared to the Naim, the Zen has less definition in the bass and is not as dynamic. Overall, I prefer the sound of the Zen over the Naim. I’ve ordered a power supply for the Zen and hope that it will improve the bass and dynamic punch. For headphones I’m using the Focal Stellia, which is very efficient and doesn’t require much power.

The downside, which for me is pretty significant, is that there is frequently clicking sounds when I listen to Tidal through Audirvana. The clicking is made worse when I browse the internet while listening. Clicking noises happen without fail at the beginnings of tracks, and are prolonged on MQA tracks. Also I’ve found that gapless playback doesn’t work when streaming from Tidal. I haven’t encountered this issue when using my Naim DAC/amp with Tidal, which suggests that the issue is not with Tidal, but is an issue with the Zen. Will Ify put out a fix to this, e.g. through a driver update? I wonder if the more expensive Ify products have the same issue. It’s an issue I can’t live with, hence my 4-star rating.

Overall this is a great headphone amp. I compared it to a Schiit Hel and an old Headroom amp I built myself 25 years ago. The bass boost might sound distorted on some headphones (YMMV). At least it did on my 20-year-old Grado SR125 headphones. I’m going to buy new headphones soon to try on this amp. Only one con: There is a left-right tracking problem on low volume so I have to keep it on low gain to get the volume pot up a bit. That’s my one star off. Otherwise it is a nice dac/amp that works with my iPad over the lightning port. I use it for bedtime listening but with the iPad, Zen, power adapter, and cables this is a bulky mess on my night stand. Also note you will need to buy a longer USB 3 cable if you are putting this next to your source (pc, usb transport, whatever…). Note it uses the 3.0 version of the B type plug. Check photos so you know what cable to buy. A 2.0 B plug will not work, but I haven’t tried and will not try.

You won't find another DAC/amp combo with MQA support at this price! The lack of remote is annoying if you, like me, are picky about volume. The lows are strong but the highs lack a bit of clarity. The coloured LED to show sampling rate is cute, but obviously a proper digital display is easier to read. Despite these minor shortcomings I would have given it 5 stars except for the stupidly short USB3.0 type B cable. Sitting on top of my full tower, the cable would not reach the USB ports in the back! Using an uncommon connector and giving people a 1-foot cable was a poor choice, I shouldn't be forced to buy a new USB cable with a device. Just use USB 'C' already!

    Wow... Expectations are blow
I am honestly surprised at the quality of this dac/amp, as well as the features. I was not expecting to enjoy the power match and true bass features, because they are game changers. These features are so great to have and play around with. This EASILY replaces my SoundblasterX G6 (which I thought was great). This dac/amp is more powerful than the G6 as well. This powers my Sundaras no problem (which are a somewhat hard to drive set of cans), and get almost to the point of being uncomfortably loud at max volume WITHOUT the power match on. With the power match on, they become too loud at the 3pm location. Great quality materials and volume knob. Plus, it can push power to both the unbalanced and balanced ports at the same time, so dual listening is a hidden feature I didn’t know of. Sound quality is great too, and I only use the USB connection to my PC.

Only con that I personally accepted from other reviews is that you cannot control the volume via Windows. That’s okay with me because I setup the dac/amp close to me on top of my desk to the left side for easy reach.

Get this…. at the price I paid (which at the time was the increased price to $189) I felt was still an amazing deal. If anything changes or happens with it I’ll update this review.

    Excellent for the price
I bought this as an upgrade to my dragonfly red 1st generation. I use it my with Adam audio T5V studio monitors connected to PC.
The dragonfly still sounds good but my monitors are prone to background noise and you get a whine sometimes. The zen DAC is supposed to provide better isolation. It is after all much bigger so all the chips are not crammed into one area.
This needs quite a lot of burn in time. If you’ve come from a headphone output of a laptop or phone then straight away it will sound good. Much better. But compared to what I was getting from the dragonfly red it sounded compressed and less detailed. After about 15 hours of use they were comparable and by 30 hours this is now superior especially in the bass clarity. There is a lot of clarity. Instruments sound realistic and we’ll defined. The sound is also lively and toe tapping. Sometimes you will almost find too much detail, it will show up the quality of the original recording. Overall a very enjoyable listen and more substantial sounding than the red. I find the headphone output is higher quality than the RCA (better sound) so run a 3.5mm to RCA out of the headphone jack which is what I was previously using anyhow. Main downside is that the volume control in Windows does nothing. This is not a fault. You can download a volume control easy enough that allows you to adjust individual program volume with 2 clicks and I just drag the slider to my music app to adjust it. That’s a shame and I hear that the first generation doesn’t do that. This 2 does have a faster clock and Bur brown chip which is what provides the DAC conversion so i think the volume control compromise is worth it. Or you can just use it’s own volume control to change the volume. Less easy if using speakers.

Update. A month later and it is sounding absolutely superb. I was curious to find out just how good it is so I took it down to try in a family members very expensive system with 4000 pound speakers and a 2000 pound amp! It was being compared using tidal against a chord dac (about 2000) and an inbuilt amp dac (500 ish?).
Held its own with arguably the best bass control. Slightly less top end. Slightly less detail. Best vocals as well. Splitting hairs though. Ultimately they each sounded different rather than better or worse. Firmware 7.3 and 7.3c sound different too. In my system I prefer 7.3c (smoother) but definitely 7.3 without the filter (brighter) in the expensive system. To compete against stuff at that price in an expensive hifi system is seriously impressive.

Didn’t bother with the mains adapter ,I just run mine off a powered USB hub
Powers my 250ohm DT990’s perfectly.I also run 80ohm DT770’s and other lower impedance headphones just fine
I guess if you have 600 ohm headphones you might want either the power supply or a separate amp but it’s great for what I have

    Pairs perfectly with Sennheiser hd560s
    Ifi has done it again,
I’m not the biggest audiophile at all, more of a consumer. This new v2 model has transformed my Sennheiser hd560s.
Before they felt far too bright and lacking something, with the new DAC that very high end has been softened ever so slightly making for a more enjoyable listen.
Hooked up to my windows 11 laptop, downloaded the latest driver from ifi and it worked flawlessly.
    Highly recommended.

First of all, this unit works very well. The sound is awesome. HOWERVER, the unit disables the use of the Windows volume control. If you are used to controlling your PC’s sound using the volume buttons on the keyboard, or using the slider in Windows, FORGET IT. You must use the volume control on the unit, or the volume control within the applications, such as the volume control in Hulu, in YouTube, in iTunes, etc.
I found this frustrating. If you would too, then think hard before purchasing.
Otherwise it does exactly what it says! Sounds great.

Excellent and unbeatable at this price range
Even though the iFi ZEN CAN is supposed to be a budget Desktop Headphone Amp and Preamp, the sound quality and its features can only be found on much more expensive gear.

First, I bought the iFi ZEN DAC V2 and I was so pleasantly surprised and happy with its performance, that I ordered the CAN right the next day and…WOW what a pair they make!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our Usersès satisfait pour un 1er DAC

MUST HAVE!

Bought to pair with my Sennheiser HD 560s mainly for FPS gaming after watching/reading numerous reviews. The headphones plugged into my motherboard provided very good soundstage with regards to Footsteps, but I still wanted to see how this dac/amp could improve on that. A few teething issues to start, mainly my end but now all good.
Is this needed for the Sennheiser 560s for FPS gaming? It does improve on my onboard audio, not a massive change, but a difference which sure helps

Am I going to keep it? Yes – I like the true bass function when I listen to music. HD560s sure miss out on Bass, so the true bass option is brilliant

Overall I’m very happy and it’s well worth the money

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersSuperb quality, a must have - no off switch, no balance or volume control through windows
This is an amazing DAC full stop.

    Sound quality:
    Superb sound quality.
    Design:
You would think the design is awful, but you will learn to like its shape and smooth volume control. The bass and power match switches are weird to push and oes not match the coating of the volume switch, but hey it’s 139. No off switch, but does not consume a lot. LED might bother you if it’s in your bedroom.
    Connectivity:
4.4 balanced and 6.3mm unbalanced. Nothing to tell. If you have never tried balanced headphones then you probably should if you are buying a DAC. (Monolith M1060C with balanced cables is a good budget friendly option).
    Features:
Download and install the iFi Zen v2 drivers from their website: https://ifi-audio.com/download-hub/
Try Tidal (Windows app) with MQA settings (click more sttings next to the iFi DAC and select “Passthrough MQA”). Tick also “Exclusive mode”
No off switch – I’d love to have one, this and the non-matching colour of the volume knob are my only issues.
Fantastic little gadget. You definitely need it if you use Tidal or Amazon Unlimited/HD etc…
Designed by AMR/UK and made by iFi – this is serious hi-fi stuff at a ridiculous price.

    Amazing….

I am a desktop gamer that is also a slight audiophile that needs crystal clear audio and boy.. oh boy… I just can’t believe this…. This product is just too cheap for what it has to offer in my opinion…

I own Beyerdynamic DT990 pros – AKG K712-Pros and the Hifiman Sundara headphones and I just can’t praise this beast enough!
Now I have come from a number of products much more focused on gamers such as the Creative Sound Blaster Z – Creative BlasterX G1 and G6 DAC/AMPs and a FIIO E07K DAC + FIIO E10K AMP.
Schiit Magni 3 AMP + Schiit Modi 3 DAC.

Amazing performance and outstandingly sexy build quality that no other product comes close too.. all the added features such as the pentagon balanced output that makes the Hifiman Sundaras SIGN if you buy the balanced cable for it! Seriously… Don’t bother with anything else… this even has the famous BURR BROWN DAC in this beast! At this price??? woah… thank you so much IFI…. well done 🙂 fan for life right here! First step into good audio, Like many of you looking at this DAC / Amp combo this was my first step into hifi Audio, after months of looking at set headphones I finally chose the Hifiman sundara and this DAC and I’m so glad not only was it a dream to set up with zero knowledge but it also felt like I was hearing every song again for the first time with layers of music I’d never noticed before, this was also enhanced by the DACs ability to bring back the bass depth that seems to be lost due to the open back nature of the headphones. Long story short if you’re interested in a good piece of kit to pair of midfi/hifi/chifi headphones you can’t go wrong with this and balanced cables for the headphones

    Awesome little DAC!
The iFi Zen DAC V2 was the perfect solution for streaming Apple’s new Lossless and High Resolution Lossless content on Apple Music. I connected a 2021 iPad Pro to the USB input of the ifi Zen DAC plugged the DAC into an NAD integrated amplifier’s analog inputs and was instantly streaming high resolution lossless goodness.

It sounds superb! It’s a step up from and I my long-in-the-tooth Logitech Squeezebox Touch which streamed from an NAS, better than the NAD integrated amplifiers DAC module and an improvement over an HRT MusicStreamer II (the latter of the two were limited to 24bit 96kHz). The iFi Zen DAC V2 has no such limitation. The highest resolution I’ve ran through it are FLAC files from my NAS (and Apple Music) at 24bit 192kHz which it handles without any problem at all. It has a low noise floor, below what my electronics can reveal anyway. Dynamic range is what you’d expect from hi-res lossless sources. This DAC seems to disappear, meaning it doesn’t color or add noise/distortion to the music in any way- just as a good DAC should.

I haven’t compared it to any other recent competitive offerings and I don’t expect I will, I’m completely satisfied with the iFi DAC V2. I’ll probably grab another one for a 2nd system, for the price why not?

I am using this iFi ZEN DAC V2 to play Apple Lossless from my Mac to a Rega Amp and the quality is excellent. The sound is vibrant without being harsh and there seems to be a much greater range. I guess that was what I was looking for so I’m a happy customer given the very reasonable price.

Use this with the Beyerdynamic 1990 and you will be blown away.
    Wow!

I use this with the Beyerdynamic 1990 and the results are incredible. Truly incredible, especially given the price.

Everyone, that trys these out when they visit say the same thing. “Wow, the music sounds 3D”
Not a technical term, sure, but we are not all audio technicians. But everyone agrees that the amount of extra complex audio dragged out from even a standard track streamed from YouTube is fantastic from this little box.

    Incredible!!!

Dac fantastico a un prezzo abbordabile
L’ho preso per abbinarlo all’amplificatore cuffia iFi Zen Can che gi possedevo.

great job ifi, tight bass wide soundstage and excellent sound, i don't have anything to complain about no balance issues for me or problems on windows or using volumio. it really punches above is class when compared to other dacs really one of the best i've listened to
