They are easy to setup, sound very balanced, all of those low frequencies come through without overpowering any of the other frequencies. Get to a very loud volume without sacrificing sound quality or cracking at all. Overall way more than I expected I would get for these speakers and definitely sound better than most systems I have listened to even using a sub woofer up to at least the 500 dollar price range. Honestly so pleased with them, thank you JBL for making a quality high value low price product to record with!

Deswegen musste da was vernnftiges her.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersThis is a very good budget monitor for beginners! This is also designed for table top usage (no stand required). The sound quality is incredible! If you’re into EDM this may not be for you as this doesn’t produce enormous bass (I’m a bass player). The volume is not too loud but it’s good enough (I’m using it with scarlett 2i2 3rd gen).

This can also be used as normal speakers for desktop or laptop.

    Incredible product! Definitely recommend this.

I wanted a good pair of 2.0 speakers for my laptop or DAP. Sure, there are much better (and much more expensive) studio monitors out there. I have a set of JBL LSR 305s as well-which are much better (and bigger and way more expensive). But for the price (I paid $94 recently for the pair) they sound great and are unbelievable value. I think you will struggle to find anything that comes close for even 2x the price.

I’ve used all sorts of larger monitors over the years, mainly for a bedroom DJ setup. These JBL’s are PERFECT for both sound quality, clarity, and size. I also don’t need a clunky amp anymore. And that price?!? Wow. Just wow. They nailed it! Very pleased with this purchase.

Great for the price. Low-end seems a little “fake”-sounding when paired with an actual sub. Great for the price though!

I love these they are super clear and lots of depth to the sound. Highly recommended for any application.

I originally had them hooked up to my computer, but now they are hooked up to my TV and they beat most soundbars I’ve owned!

A decent economical solution for computer monitors with a bit more power. The sound quality is great at volume but not as articulate as other reference monitors, so don’t expect Porsche performance at chev prices. They will be more than adequate for general mastering, production, better for editing, outstanding for general use.
Great price, quality name, well built, unimposing size and shape when placed beside monitor.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought these speakers as ‘budget’ home entertainment speakers. Way better than a soundbar, and they provide very clear vocals.
They have an auto-sleep and wake feature that means you don’t have to get up to turn them on. They can also accept audio input from any source without any fiddling, providing a seamless transition between TV and podcasts or music.
Bluetooth volume control is a problem, as for some reason bluetooth audio comes in LOUD unless you turn it off.

I have had JBL speakers before, so the brand trust was already there when I purchased these. I needed a solution for surround sound as I already had a sound bar with sub, and did not want to completely replace my set up and spend large sums of money. These now act as my surround, with the main sound and base coming from the sound bar and sub. The fact that they have their own built in amp made it very easy for me to set up.

When I solely use these speakers (during testing) they were great. Crystal clear sound, the base and treble is very impressive too for such small compact speakers. My living room is not huge, so these were a perfect solution for me. Combined with my sound bar and sub, I now get amazing surround sound for the theatre experience needed. Delivery was very quick and set up is super easy.

  18. Danuta89Scvw says:

These are rather good speakers. The speakers are well built, with a solid, weighty feel to them despite relatively compact size. The speakers have an unusual shape (well, unusual by traditional standards) replacing the boxy design of traditional speakers with a sleek, ovoid shape – without entering the realms of wackiness. The speakers have rubberised bases and aren’t prone to slipping on a desktop. These are the basic, wired only versions. The speakers run on mains power via a single mains input.

At the combination of price point and size, the sound quality is really very good. The bass is a little weedy, but better than expected considering the size. I’m happy with them — and would not have been unhappy had I paid the circa hundred pound asking price, instead of receiving them as review items.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersPure unadulterated sound, smooth like honey. No distortion at high level and a perfectly balanced sound. Great for gaming as well and I do not regret changing from my 2.1 speaker system with that “thumping bass”.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersSound quality is unbelievable. AFter I signed up for Tidal to get proper CD or Master quality audio I was looking for something to make the most of that. I’m not a producer I just want to hear music exactly as the artist intended. So I wasn’t necessarily looking for monitors, just good Hifi speakers. However I compared these directly to the Edifier R1280T – its not even close. They’re nice speakers for the price, sure ($125 CAD) but they sound like tin cans by comparison. They go just the tiniest bit louder than these JBL’s but once you’ve heard them side by side you would never want to bother listening to the Edifier speakers at any volume.

Plus these JBL’s look way nicer, whether on you desk or in the living room, whatever you need. And they were $30 less ($95 CAD).

I’ve owned a ton of Bluetooth speakers and computer speakers over time, these are hands down the best for the price, outperform stuff 3x as much and the best sound quality of any that I’ve owned personally.

These monitors are perfect for a deejays who have their set up in room where space is limited. Connect them to your controller or mixer’s output and there you go.
They are good for monitoring in a recording set up. Cost effective and sound very good. They give you a well balanced frequency response. Especially for the beginner on a tight budget. They have good volume and good low end punch for a speaker that size.
I have 2 pair. One pair in my studio connected to my deejay set up and the other in may bedroom connected to my streaming device on my TV. They sound better that most soundbar systems in that price range

These are quite simply fantastic, I bought them to run a Pioneer tuner through. The built in amplifier is sensational for its size and the tone and quality of the sound is something only much bigger monitors could manage a few years ago. Simple to set up, with ample connections. Plus, the power save feature is a real bonus so you can leave them switched on and they bounce back to life when you need them. Astounding product.

Honestly, I’m not sure you can get a better overall value for the price. Shockingly clear across the frequency spectrum at a decent volume, with the only (expected) caveat being sub 60hz or so is basically non-existent just due to the physical size of the cones. Highly recommended if you need some great sounding speakers for home/office listening, or even a secondary pair of reference monitors for comparison to less than full spectrum listening situations.

Actually my 2nd pair. Originally had these for desktop recording monitoring, which I still use.
Thought I’d see what the TV sounded like through them. Sounded great, so wanted another pair.
When I saw them now being advertised for 50 less than the other pair cost, just had to get them!
    Always loved JBL.
I think the reason they are now being sold at a greatly reduced price on Amazon, it that they are now being
replaced with the more expensive Bluetooth version. I don’t like the lag you get with Bluetooth, so these are great for me.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese speakers are not for entertainment. They are advertised as reference monitors and that’s what they are. No enhanced bass or anything like that. The sound is flat, very clear and crisp. I hear sounds in music that I never knew where there. The output volume is not that high, but for studio use that’s not a problem, because if you are editing or making music you’re not gonna play that hard. It’s more then enough to get work done.
I would recommend these to anyone that is looking for studio monitors like if you are making music or editing videos etc. The build quality is excellent, you can feel and hear that it’s JBL. I have heard a lot of monitors and I can tell you that these are real reference monitors. They are not for amateurs. And for the price you can’t beat them. I just got them, but so far they work grea

It is a truly great product for it’s sounding and price. Now I really don’t understand why you should want to buy generic PC speakers from known brands for 100, 200 and even more euros and get that poor sound.
There is super clear highs and mids, the sound panorama is wide and have plenty of details.
There is a lack of bass, so for those, who want to make bass party, you should think about buying a subwoofer or pair of 305p monitors.

    Truly great product.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usersdecent high and mid range sound but disappointing bass. The best thing about these speakers is the “ALL” on input selector that will play audio from all inputs, simultaneously. If you dont need that then get Edifiers, much better sound quality for the price.

EDIT: while bending over to pick something up from the floor i noticed the speakers sounded much better. originally i had them placed on the desk but speaker placement is very important for these. im updating my review and bumping the rating to 4 stars because after making speak stands and placing them 60 degrees from center the sound much better and actually make decent monitors.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThese have been sitting on my desk for a few weeks now and I haven’t a single complaint. I use these for general music listening, music production, and gaming and they are a wonderful jack-of-all-trades for these purposes.

I’m probably not great and describing the way audio equipment sounds, but I know I’m very happy with these. The short version is this: accurate but pleasant. I don’t feel like any frequency dominates over any other whatsoever. That’s perfect for me as a hobbyist musician.

I feel like these would be the perfect speakers to get if one is dabbling with music production, but maybe not fully committed. Say you got these for that reason, and then decided not to go any further. You’ve at least now got a very versatile and pleasant set of speakers for a desk. Add a little sub and you’ll be having a lot of fun with these.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWell I needed a pair for my home studio/guitar teaching room and having once tried them with the TV went and bought another pair for TV Monitors. So much better than the soundbar I had – really good and plenty loud enough. As studio monitors, I#m sure there are better ones out there, but hey, those better ones are 250-350 a pair. These work fine for all the work I need to use them for. And saving something like 200 on a better pair means that’s another 200 I don’t have to earn – when you work for yer-self that’s how you see a saving – 200= 8 hours teaching. Anyway, you’ll really like them – not monster loud but loud enough and nice warms sounding.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI don’t write reviews, but I just finished 3 hours back to back testing these and thought I should share. Short version: If you’re thinking about buying these you should probably buy them.

Long version: My testing comparison was against an Audio Pro A10 and – unfairly – my full 5.1 hifi (Onkyo receiver, Dali sensor floorstanders, etc). They destroyed the A10, literally no comparison on any measure. And in some cases they showed detail In recordings that my hifi blended out.

Obviously this set of stereo speakers is no match for the range and power of a big expensive setup (whether hifi or studio). But for this size of speaker at this price? If you have the need, they’re perfect.

They have a very good range and would work well for listening to music right up to medium sized rooms (30-40sqm) at moderate volume levels.

For monitoring they have great detail. They show up bad recordings. I noticed fairly subtle mic/setup changes mid verse in well produced songs I’ve heard many time before and never picked up on.

Unlike some detailed speakers they’re not tiring/annoying to listen to, they’re dynamic and fairly warm. Bass and mid are smooth and punchy, trebles are crisp without ever being shrill or metallic.

They’re solid, good build quality and have a clean, modern look.

This is a simple, versatile setup, plug it into whatever you want. Way better than a Bluetooth/Smart speaker that will get out dated; there’ll always be some new tech, new codec, new ai assistant. In ten years these will still plug into the latest AI device while your first gen smart speaker is deep in landfill somewhere.

Finally, these speakers could be used in any way you want. They’re not just for sound engineers. No reason they couldn’t be used in any room for music or tv or whatever. I haven’t tried them outside, they have a big sound but would probably sound a bit lost outside of a smallish patio/pool setting, so maybe don’t use them as the PA system at your wedding.

This is the first time for me owning a desktop monitor, I have had some experiences with headphones and audio and done my studies about speakers. These sounds excellent if you just want to enjoy music and for normal desktop use. The bass is not overwhelming but is tight and surprisingly nice. The highs are clear but not the clearest I’ve heard for speakers, and mids are a little bit dark but are all fine for what they are. Just don’t expect crazy bass for those bass heads. The volume control knob is very nice and fidgety. Most importantly these get loud and punchy, probably louder than you will ever need these to be, plus they are self-powered so no need for amps and as that could easily cost a lot more. Overall, an easy recommendation for beginners into speakers or just need a desktop speaker for normal use.

These are the shape of a big egg, but not like standard box speakers.
My previous setup for video / audio editing was an old pair of NS10s powered by a mini hifi amplifier as the MacBook Pro speakers aren’t ideal. This setup sounded good at low and higher levels, but s Still, it took up a large amount of desk space. I am due to be moving to a smaller editing suite so the idea of a smaller pair of monitors was something to be jumped at. In built amplifier too? Let’s do this.
JBL have been around sinceJames Bullough Lansing founded them in 1946 and have been installed inprofessional in homes, studios and cinemas the world over. So a pair of speakers with the JBL name on it must be good? Right?
So in the box are the two eggs. They’re not too heavy and they have a rubberised base so they won’t slide around on your desk. They connect to your sound source by a RCA sockets at the back of the right hand speaker. I used a 3.5mm jack to RCA cable from my 2019 MacBook Pro headphone out. Other inputs available are a pair of TRS and on the front, a 3.5mm aux in.Behind the grill you have a 4.5-Inchlow frequency driver combined with a 0.75-Inch soft-dometweeter. Power is a class D 60 watt (30w + 30w). They’re designed to be placed at head / ear height reasonably close and don’t take up much room on your desk.
Running for a week and I was somewhat unimpressed with the sound, there was no sparkle, no oomph from them. Then I started to hear what they were capable of. Music, uncoloured, which is what you would want in a (home) studio. They are not meant to give you fake bass or colour the sound. The volume knob is stepped, and glows when the speakers are powered. They don’t go loud loud, these are near-field monitors for a small or home studio (even just a laptop and DAW of your choice). For me, when video editing, I know the sound, be it vocal tracks or music, what I hear is what the edit should be when published. They’re now a useful piece of my studio.
Negatives? They are a tad bass shy. The sound took a while to open up. The on-off button on the rear of the right speaker is a little stiff, I felt I would accidentally push the speaker over trying to turn them on. The figure of eight power cable is too short (yeah, that’s more of a niggle and I had a longer cable on hand to fix that).
Note: there’s another version of these speakers with bluetooth built in. If you don’t need that, then these could be worthwhile.

For the price its an amazing investment. That being said there is no Low end on these but that can be a good thing. I have an older neighbor and when making music i cant blast it so make it between these and my headphones and i get great mixes. Perfect also as b monitors next to 6.5 or 8 inch woofers

From sound professional to amateur home producer these are a very solid pair of monitors. Clean, pure and clinical sound with a very precise sound range and absolutely no reverb. Very fast drivers deliver punch when switching and predictable fade from the horns make subtle tone shift audible clearly. Impressive quality for the price and good build/design features.

Note these are not for listening to music per say but designed to remove all variations from speaker/amp materials and build to to deliver clean sound so that the sound design can be judged.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersReally impressed with these for the size and price. Are they studio quality, no but for a bedroom producer absolutely ideal. Despite criticism that they lack bass, I can’t really agree, they sound good given their small size. If you give consideration to speaker placement, ideally near a wall, they deliver and then some.

Okay so these are NOT gonna blow your brains out and if you are only buying for casual listening i’d recomend getting the flip speaker instead. However, as I got them for bedroom djing while living temporarily with a family with young kids who go to bed early, these are *perfect*, especially when you consider the price. It’s not like I can throw a party here anyway lol. Sound quality seems okay-ish but I’m just someone having fun messing with serato, not a pro. My usual monitors are pioneer DJ-DM 40, which are about twice the price and definetly louder and way clearer, so if you wanna make some noise while still somehow staying on a budget those are better.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have had these for one hour, and for the price I paid ($87) they are excellent. The accuracy and sound stage is very good. Of course the low end is limited, but they are only 4.5″ woofers. Possibly a bit compressed on the upper mid range, but for the price the quality and build is exceptional. They will probably open up after a few hours of play.

Not for high end mixing, but for listening in front of the computer, they are great. I am an audiophile, and these are a great buy, if you buy them for what they were intended for.

I have been listening for 2 days now and they have opened up and are very accurate. Exceptional sound stage and separation for a speaker this size. l Love them!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m pleased with the JBL Reference Monitors. I use this with my Rode Podcaster Pro Mixing Board connected with two TRS Cables. I have them connected to my iMac via Bluetooth.
They have a small footprint and are designed to sit on a desk. Hook-up was easy. The sound is crisp and and clear. These are designed for reference, not entertainment sound–so you’re not getting much bass or modified sound.
It’s nice to have several input capabilities. You switch between inputs by pushing the selector button. The markings on the indicator are a bit small but it’s not a big drawback. The volume control and selector switch have a good solid feel to them.
So I’m a happy camper. I was a bit concerned that these were available before the release date listed on other sites; however, the box indicates US and I had no problem registering the product with JBL. I’m not sure about if they would honor the warranty since Amazon is not list, but I doubt if I would have any issues with the speakers. They work great and I don’t play them at extreme levels.
So I recommend them and I believe the asking price make them a good value.

I actually like it very much. It’s hard to believe that it does not have a subwoofer. I’m coming from using a cheaper no-name 2.1 speaker that had a subwoofer; the only thing that I sort of not like is that the on/off button is in the back of the speaker. I think it would’ve been nice to have the on/off button as part of the volume control – you turn the dial all the way down and then some to power off, etc.
As far as the sound quality goes, it’s pretty awesome. I can never have it more 1/3 of the way because it’s loud, and it’s really clear too.

For the price point and what you get, I’m extremely happy. The coaxial speakers work wonderfuly to keep things in phase and sound like a single point source. Make sure they are ear level when using these speaker. They really shine when your ears and the drivers are at the same height. So listen to them on axis. I have these on my night stand right now pointed at my bed with my head in-between them. It sounds like I have studio headphones on. I plan to get another pair. I am not sure about mastering / mixing as I don’t do that. Though again they sound like having a good pair of headphones on. I think it’s because it’s all coaxial and in phase working as if it’s one driver. Which in a way it is. Oh, and no details are lost or accentuated depending on volume. It’s very much the same response at all levels.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI tried these connected to both a standard laptop output as well as an external Fiio DAC. All high marks aside from a loose power cable like others have noted and the low end sounds end up sounding more like a tap than a boom. I usually listen to Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas to check how the low end sounds and the kick drum sound is not as punchy and expansive, which is to be expected from 4.5″ drivers, but I still wanted a bit more hit from the low end. For the price and size these are well worth it but don’t get them expecting to defy laws of physics with bass like some other speakers this size do but at 3-4 times the price. Vocals are solid and front and center, acoustic guitar has a nice round sound (I use Jesse Cook for instrumental listening for reference) separation of instruments is good you can hear the various drum heads change position in the mix as they are hit. Good for a budget monitor as well as for just use at home as small speakers for near field listening. If you can only spend $100 or less these should be on the list of maybe 2-3 and really only ones in this size and interesting shape.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThese are really quite good and do offer a proper monitor sound, which is my preference. They need to be carefully positioned so as not to get too boomy owing to the rear bass port – if too near to a wall the bass can become muddled especially with bass heavy dance or hip-hop, but once positioned correctly this really isn’t a concern.

The build is excellent and the range of inputs great – I got these on offer for about half price and they are perfect for my office space, playing mostly vinyl and flac files. Highly recommended.

This is a beautifully engineered pair of speakers from JBL. They feel extremely solid and everything about them says “quality”. In the box with the speakers is a mains lead, an instruction leaflet and a cable to connect the two speakers. This is straight speaker wire meaning that if it is too short for your planned installation it’s really easy to substitute a longer cable, no special connectors needed.

JBL have used expanded polystyrene for packing, it’s really time to switch away from this.

Inputs, power and controls are on the right-hand speaker. Supported inputs are a pair of RCA sockets and a pair of quarter inch sockets (balanced) on the back, and a 3.5mm stereo socket on the front. On the back there’s also a mains switch and the mains cable socket. On the front there’s a volume control above the stereo 3.5mm input socket and a headphone jack underneath.

I had these up and running quickly and was very impressed with them. They are professional reference speakers, the kind you’d use in a home studio, and at 30W per channel they sound fantastic. However they can also be used with a computer if you’re really fussy about your audio.

My only criticism is that there’s no threaded mounting hole provided to wall mount these speakers, which is a shame. JBL don’t do a mounting kit either and the rounded styling of the cabinets will make it difficult to use a generic mount with them. OK they are sold as ‘desktop’ but this feels an obvious omission. My plan is to search for a pair of suitable mounts so that I can wall mount them either side of my projector screen.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThese JBL 104 monitors are mains powered and accept voltages from 100 to 240 VAC 50/60 Hz so can be used pretty much anywhere, the cable they use is the figure 8 cable (IEC C7). Construction is mostly ABS plastic with sturdy metal grille across the front of each speaker. They feel solid with no weird creaks or rattles. The amplification comes from a master speaker and the second one is the passive slave just connected by a regular speaker cable. Sadly there is no option to change the angle of the speakers. A protective carry case is supposed to be made available for these speakers as they are lightweight enough (4 kg) to be easily transported.

The amp in the master speaker provides 60 watts of long-term power (30 for each speaker) and it is enough for near-field close up monitoring. JBL specs put the output at 92 decibels continuous at a 1-meter distance. They feature a coaxial woofer design meaning that the 0.75-inch tweeter is in the centre of the 4.5-inch woofer. One big advantage of coaxial design is that it allows these speakers to be significantly smaller than those with separate woofer and tweeters. Obviously with a woofer that small the bass is not going to be a strong suit of these speakers, but there is still a healthy amount of low-end frequency response which goes down to 60Hz and although you won’t be shaking in the room with them you don’t feel like you are being shortchanged when it comes to hearing bass lines properly.
I found that these monitors give a nice neutral sound across the board, certainly accurate enough for bedroom production and editing. There is no harshness or breakup until you max the speakers out which is not necessary for a near-field scenario.
They have an automatic stand-by mode which kicks in after not being used for a while but it is not as burdensome as with some other brands, it doesn’t take a whole lot of volume to bring them back to life.
On the rear of the master speaker, you have both unbalanced RCA and balanced quarter-inch jack inputs and can have both hooked up simultaneously which is handy. On the front of the speaker, you have a 1/8 inch aux input as well, although that one does override the two rear inputs. You also have the illuminated volume knob and a 1/8 inch headphone socket which cuts the speaker sound off when you plug your headphones in. The volume button works for the headphones as well.

They are reasonably priced for a low profile professional-grade studio monitors, and given how elegant and compact these monitors are and the awesome sound they produce I would recommend them.

Surprising sound from a small and beautiful form factor monitors

  79. Anonymous says:

These JBL are a decent enough set of desktop monitors. These are ideal for a small home studio or for making up videos etc when you need slightly better quality sound than tiny tinny speakers on a laptop or other computer speakers you can get.

These come well packaged, with cables to attach it to your computer and to connect the speakers together.

The volume knob is made of a a knurled metal and while it is stepped (rather than one continuous smooth motion), it feels very sure and secure.

The sound quality from these is great and belies their small stature. The bass comes through clearly and doesn’t get too muddy at higher volumes, the highs are crisp and the mids don’t get lost in the mix, like with other speakers or headphones I have tried in the past.

These sound better once they have had a chance to burn in and the cone can vibrate more freely, but to be honest the sound is pretty impressive straight out of the box.

A great bit of kit and whether you just want these for gaming, regular computer speakers or as monitors these JBL speakers should more than live up to expectations.

A nice pair of speakers that while not tiny should fit nicely on most desks. The sound is cool and clear, though I thought the Bass a little weak, but that might just be my ears.

For me, an occasional dabbler with music, they are not ideal. They need to be wired in to the computer, not difficult or time consuming but I have enough wires already, what with broadband HD backup’s extra wifi etc. I might have been able to get past this if they had been USB connectable, but they are not.

That really isn’t the speakers fault I agree but mine. But I would have thought them more saleable with USB that’s all. However, they are a very nice pair of speakers and I’m sure anyone would be pleased with the sound quality.

  81. ShirleyKillian says:

I’m reviewing the 1 Series 104 pair here, not any of the 305/306/308 models that are currently under the same heading. While the other three models are all rectangular and serious-looking, the 1 Series have a stylish curvature to them- and smaller cones. So for the 1 Series, have JBL put style over content? Thankfully, definitely not. They sound fine- not amazing, but fine.

Through my day job video editing, I know JBL are a reasonably respected brand- not one of the absurd unattainable magic brands, but a good solid professional choice that won’t break the bank- but I’ve never actually ended up with my own pair, more normally finding myself with M-Audio, Genelec or Mackie. I can hear why JBL are respected, for sure. There’s nothing wrong with the fairly budget Edifiers I was using before I plugged these in, but the brightness at the top end of the sound was instantly distinguishable. Acoustic guitars and cymbals roll through exactly how they should.

Pro monitor speakers aren’t really supposed to make you go “wow”, because that’s not the point of them- they’re supposed to represent a balanced, high quality sound that represents the best of what you’re actually working on. So the fact that they didn’t blow me away with supreme bass or massive customizability is a virtue. They filled me with that “what you hear is what you get” confidence that you want from speakers when editing or producing music.

Also, the maximum volume on these speakers is well under what I’m accustomed to being able to get from other brands- another sign that it’s aimed at (as shown in the product marketing photos) laptop video editors and bedroom acoustic guitarists, rather than large grading suites or major studios.

Unlike some other speaker manufacturers, JBL also do a lot of cheap consumer-level, everyday products- bluetooth speakers and the like- and the range of inputs on these speakers does come from that world as well. The supplied 3.5mm cable is surprisingly poor- seemingly unshielded, as far as I could tell, and I needed to swap it out for a different cable I already owned to prevent a steady buzzing sound. That’s certainly disappointing, but thankfully easily fixed with a cheap replacement cable.

If you’re mainly using these for a bit of home office work, offline editing etc., or you’re just treating yourself to a pair of high-quality speakers because you love working to music, then these are a really solid choice. But if you’re setting up a proper studio or edit suite and you’re looking for cut corners slightly on the reference speakers, then ultimately I’d have to recommend similarly-priced M-Audio speakers over these- but only just.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThese JBL Series 1 104 Speakers are mains powered audio monitors/desktop speakers with built-in amplification of 30W per channel. The speakers feature a 4.5″ (118mm) bass/midrange driver with a concentrically mounted .75″ (18mm) soft dome tweeter.

The cabinets are compact and look/feel very well made with one unit being the “master” containing the connectivity, controls and Class D amp. The master also features a front-mounted volume control, aux input and headphone jack which mutes the speakers plus balanced 1/4″ RCA inputs and 1/8″ jacks plus a mains switch on the rear.

The design of the speakers is distinctive they are, in effect, vertical, oval, pods which mean their footprint is modest although they are a bit taller and wider than I expected. The finish looks good with captive wire mesh fronts and, if you are planning to transport them, they should survive the rough and tumble.

Weighing in at under 4Kg in total you won’t be overloaded on the move. Although there’s no carry case available at present there are rumours that there’ll be one soon. One disadvantage is that you can’t alter the angle of the speakers. Also, although no mention of magnetic shielding is made, I found the 104s didn’t upset my monitor when placed in proximity to it.

Set up is easy you just connect the speakers using the wire provided, connect your source, and plug into the mains — there’s a subtle blue LED indicator around the volume control. To me, the purpose of a monitor speaker is to accurately reproduce the sound being input to it without colouration. I tried these speakers with a Korg, my PC and a Sony high-res Walkman. Remember, these speakers do not feature Bluetooth or wireless connectivity.

My first impressions of the sound are very good. Vocals and upper ranges are clear, without being tinny, mid-range is crisp without being harsh and bass is taut and well-controlled without being muddy. The level of bass is decent but not floor-shaking although there’s nothing to stop you using these 104s with sub-woofer. There are two rear-facing bass ports which don’t seem to mind being placed fairly close to a wall.

My perception is that sounds are accurately reproduced and generally smooth, the sound-stage is wide with good stereo separation. Even when placed a metre apart the sound is spacious and the volume is ample (quoted at 30W per channel) for a small/medium-sized room. About 95% of the rotary volume scale is usable before distortion sets in.

In summary, these are an impressive and versatile set of monitors which offer decent quality at a surprisingly modest price point – I like them a lot.

I “settled” for these when my Audioengine A2’s died. Truth be told, they actually sound better that the A2’s. For half the Price. The imaging and separation are amazing. I mostly use these for video editing, however I find myself just sitting there listening to music more and more.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGreat value here for what they are. I use them as my bed room speakers for music and gaming. For their size they surprisingly have good low end. The 3.5mm headphone jack in the front of the speakers is decent for normal listening volumes but you are better off using a dedicated headphone amplifier for higher impedance headphones. I just wish these had Bluetooth but at this price point plenty of value here.

he sound quality of these is really really great and there’s no delay at all. the only downside is that they’re not as loud as i’d like them to be. but then again, i didn’t pay $1000 or anything so these are really good for the amount you pay!

I bought these as a secondary pair of speakers for my studio, I have very expensive Adam monitors for mixing and wanted a secondary small pair for keyboard mixing. At 129 they were worth a try and i am blown away by their clarity and ability to handle live instruments ie: Nord Stage and Korg Kronos . I have to keep reminding myself how much they were.

Golden Review Award: 70 From Our UsersThese speakers have been designed for optimum performance triangulated at arms length from the listening position. In that configuration, they can be used successfully as an entry level first set of reference speakers for the home recording/production studio environment.

I’m a retired professional audio engineer and commercial recording studio owner. The 104s do a very credible job reproducing the digital masters produced in my pro studio. The speakers also do very well when tested using commercial HD evaluation recordings such as Chesky Records’ Ultimate Demonstration Disk. The 104s are a bit bottom heavy centered around 100Hz, up by about 3dB from a reference 1k Hz tone. Some of that 3dB fundamental boost may impact bass overtones in the 200-250 Hz range. Other than that, the 104s are very accurate in my experience, and well worth the $130 price for the pair.

Mixes and masters made using the 104s may tend to be a bit light in the upper bass in some instances. But I’m confident in saying that if it sounds good on the 104s, the mix will be in the ball park and may only require minor tweaking after evaluation when played back on much better reference speakers.

JBL has a winner with the 104. I highly recommend considering these speakers when looking for an entry level reference system.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe sound is very well balanced and are perfect for small home studios. They are loud enough and provide a nice flat sound profile which makes it easy to get finals mixes mastered. I used my open back Sennheiser HD 598 headphones before but I’ve been using these exclusively since I purchased them.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersI use these as computer speakers and the sound quality is superb.
The bass, while not earth-shaking low, is tight and accurate.
Mids and highs are crisp and the soundstage is precise.

The volume control is stepped, so you don’t get precise control but it’s good enough for my purposes.
All in all an excellent set of powered speakers.

    Tight accurate sound.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersFor $150 these studio monitors are a steal! They’re very compact for studio monitors, and perform similar to larger and more expensive $200/$250 pairs (although they certainly are entry level). I belong to the target demographic for this product, a demographic that JBL understands very well. For a bedroom studio, such as my own, you run into space problems really fast and your traditional studio monitors are not the most attractive component in this regard. These speakers solve that very problem, all while retaining beefy 4.5 drivers. Although frequency’s don’t go sub-bass, they do reach down to 60 which goes deeper than any other competitor in this price range. Will I want to upgrade to something more substantial eventually? Sure. But I’ve only been messing with music production for about a year and for someone who isn’t in the professional realm yet, these will be your best option for the cost (in my opinion).
