Superb acting What an enthralling film. Savage. Forget the Batman theme and get involved in this. It’s not superhero or flashy but what a story. And the acting is beyond anything in this genre. It really is that good. Just not a superhero story! If you want that go elsewhere
Great prequel I really had my doubts about this. And after purchasing I kept finding reasons not to watch it. I have to admit it is one of my absolute favourite portrails of the joker. The background story is great makes sense and finally gives the joker a background that seems to fit. Phoenix’s portrail is brilliant, the quirks he uses in the character fit the things we already know about the joker so so well. It connects the tv show camp joker and heath ledgers joker perfectly. Wasn’t expecting much and was really pleasantly surprised
An outstanding piece of art that is almost as good as The Dark Knight. I saw this film first on the big screen where it blew me away, then on IMAX where it totally blew me away, and then on my HDTV where it didn’t have quite the same impact but is definitely a film that I will watch at least another 10 times. I saw new things every time I watched it. I was fortunate to be at the Premier of this film in the front row at my local and excellent multiplex. I am looking forward to seeing the remastered Terminator 2, Bladerunner, Shawshank Redemption, The Empire Strikes Back and Back to the Future on the big screen if when it re-opens next month following the Covid shutdown.
Strong performances, good film. Never got to see it at the cinema, but bought it on blu on a “Two for 20” deal. No spoilers from me, but a very good film that I will watch again. The performances throughout are excellent, and, given the viewpoint, the viewer sympathises with the protagonist to a large degree. Given this and its political nature, I can understand why the film has provoked opposing viewpoints.
It is not a truly great film in my humble opinion, as it lacks subtlety and there are plenty of times when the viewer has to suspend their secondary disbelief, but it is thought provoking and engaging. It is certainly one of the better franchise films, and well worth the watch.
One of the BEST films i have ever seen! I hated this film. I hated how it made me feel. So dirty, unclean. Grimey. Out of place & out of my mind. Couldn’t believe how much i felt for the character of joaquin phoenix. My heart broke. My throat gasped. My insides turmoiled, my blood boiled & my eyes leaked. A lot. This film makes you think. Quite honestly, one of the best films i have ever seen in 54yrs & one of the best performances from any actor in the world. Mr. Joaquin Pheonix.
A great film Joker is about how the Joker became the Joker . It’s not a superhero movie. That said is a merciless portrait of the treatment of some cases by the media that give bad reviews to this movie while film critics give it great reviews . As a film is excellent, great performances not only by Joaquin Phoenix who is superb but by all the cast. Great soundtrack The movie is truly an original film, you may like or dislike it but there’s no other film like it . Along with Parasites is one of the best films I’ve seen in recent years .
What a film! This is an absolutely amazing film. Joaquin Phoenix is incredible in it and the storyline is really thought-provoking. The best film I have seen in a long time. Some quite brutal bits in some scenes so it definitely deserves a 15 rating.
Bits difficult to Watch Watching someone slowly descend into madness was sometimes a hard watch – but beautifully acted and almost as good as Logan for more serious comic book films.
A film that should be watched however difficul This was a film I was not expecting – certainly not from the comic book genre. This was thought provoking and the way it ties into the Heath Ledger Joker is very clever indeed. Outside that it provides an understanding into a simple reality – most evil is created by the society people live in – people are not born evil. A painful watch but worth the effort.
The Bes For me, the best Joker will always be Heath, but this was something else entirely. Dark, hard to watch, even harder to process, nonetheless, by far the most brilliant film made this year. Made me want to look into the making of the film, which left me in awe. Joaquin’s acting was 100% Oscar (and everything else’s) worthy.

I can empathise with the protagonist which makes me question my sanity. Great movie. Reminds me of the classic Scorsese film, King of Comedy, if it was ramped up and set in Gotham City. I would recommend this film to non fans of comics and graphic novels. It’s a character study drama more than anything. Even my 66 years old mother loved it.

A superb film An excellent film. Worth a couple of hours of your life. I do miss the “extras” that most DVDs no longer contain, unless you are willing to pay premium prices.
If you like DC based movies you really should watch this.
Great movie You really buy and watch this movie for Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of The Joker and he pulls it off very well. The story is a bit simplistic at times but I still loved it and have watched it many times since I bought this. It’s very thought provoking even for a super hero/villain movie and is a breath of fresh air from all that Marvel Cinematic Universe cancer. Nothing in life is that clean cut or black and white, and the movie pulls off all the shades of grey in between perfectly. It’s just a really interesting movie and I love how you end up rooting for the bad guy in it unlike all those boring Marvel Movies. I hope you try it and love like I do. 🙂
Keep smiling I’m typically not a fan of movies that were heavily oscar-nominated – generally drawn out storylines about a person with a disability or challenge. Joker is not an exception to that theme. Also, in contrast to my 6-year old son, I can’t be enthused by superhero movies for entirely different reasons.
Still, I was curious to see Joker.
And I ‘m very glad I did. Really appreciated the beautiful movie, that is full of tense and surprising moments.
I had read or seen relatively little about it. And I was under the impression that was a standalone movie that gives a different twist and back story to the Joker character. That it does. However it is fully intertwined with Gotham and the Batman lore. And somewhat to my surprise key aspects of the Bruce Wayne story are elaborately revisited in the movie. But it is vert well done and in an interesting manner. My wife, not really a super hero fan to say it mildly and with even less knowledge on the material than me, didn’t even notice this.
So Joker is a super fascinating story that follows Arthur Fleck’s transformation from a challenged person, that could evoke some sympathy, into the clown of darkness. The main issue being that due to a mental issue he is incapable of integrating into society. Following him tipping over the edge reality provides several brilliant twists.
The two pieces of commentary that I recall from the time when the movie hit cinemas were. Firstly, that the movie should be seen as a warning. This, having see the movie surprises me. Vulnerable, confused people sadly are a reality. If this is warning to some movie critics, it is good that they have been puled from their pink cloud . I don’t believe in movies with messages, but perhaps there is a social message here that vulnerable people deserve receive support and attention.
Secondly, the movie was criticised because of its violent nature. Sure its is. But hey.. this is the Joker, what do you expect!? And if critics are complaining about the level of violence in this movie, then they have been spending too much time in cinema and failed to watch popular streaming series that have taken further steps in graphic violence in the race for eyeballs.
Joker is beautiful, stylistic cinematic experience that draws you in to the slightly 70’s dystopian world of Gotham. The emptiness and toxicity get almost tangible.
Let’s hope there will be no sequel as more detail and perspective owl remain some of the magic of this excellent movie. Oh, and Joaquin Phoenix, that I’ve admired since Gladiator, carries the whole piece in a spectacular manner.
So very much worth seeing. We bought it on Prime and the crisp HD version does much credit to the many dark tones in the movie.
We had to watch it in two parts. but were so was drawn in to it that we couldn’t wait to see the ending.
A must see! This film is absolutely phenomenal. Not really big into the DC universe, but it’s a complete departure from the recent DC movies. Dark and uncomfortable, Joaquin Phoenix absolutely blew me away as the downtrodden Arthur Fleck. A must see for any movie fan.
Loved the acting! not really a "joker" movie tho It was an interesting film, long winded.. very good acting and fantastic job!! However,, if your looking for a movie more to do with JOKER as you know then I’m afraid this might not suit what your looking for, I’ve known joker to be a villain with no stopping him in this it portrays him to be a victim with a lot off followers at the end because he killed rich people using a gun. Still I love him he’s one of my favourite actors his acting was fabulous.. even the lady as his mother she plays AHS and grown to really like her too

An original take on the joke This is a brilliant film and Joaquin Phoenix portrayal of the joker won him an Oscar. Not many comic book films win at the oscars! It’s a dark insight into the life of the man who eventually becomes joker. I highly recommend this film and it would not be lost in any collectio
Epic really really good Batman lore done right. Forget all the hype saying this is a movie about mental illness and all the media going on &on about the movies morals.
Think of this as a fresh movie taking batman in a new interesting realistic down to earth way set in gotham.
This is a movie of how Joker came tobe joker and what lead joker to take the path he has. A really interesting and new way gotham lore is staged and i hope just hope they will take this movie and can make many more with joker and different characters.
The new batgirl got me worried a little i kept thinking why…why…why after joker was done to right please don’t go in batgirl direction so much good work could be done from Joker for the future.

The hype is not all it's cracked up to be. Allowing for all the hype and the well-deserved industry awards, I felt disappointed. It was a good film, well directed, well acted with an interesting story-line. The Joker has always needed a back-story and has had many, starting, for me, with Jack Nicholson falling into a vat of chemicals (which I think was the original DC story). Heath Ledger’s back-story of child abuse was powerful. Recently, the Gotham series which portrays the joker’s beginning in organized crime, plotting one mob against another, and close to his mother, and also Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as a deranged comic, also close to his mother, have another thing in common: they are both much older than Bruce Wayne, so Batman or the Dark Knight would be beating up on a pensioner by the time Bruce matured. I much preferred the Gotham story line out of the two, and that’s why i was disappointed by the 2019 movie.
You don't need to be a fan of superheroes for this grit. The steel book is, as most are, a beautiful touch. This film has been one of those most divisive films out. I’m on the side of it being the film of the year. You don’t need to be a fan of superheroes to enjoy this film. It’s built around the DC universe but this story brings you in to a whole new look of that universe. It’s gritty and so hard to put into words. But it’s a film that I think everyone should watch once.
Really Enjoyable A proper movie with a great script
Dark subject that’s not watered down or inserting
any political, Gender laced or whatever agendas , just a dark grim
story about the rise of The joker (What timeline or story/movie arc i do not know)
just entertaining, a movie you can eat pop corn too
BRILLIANT After Heath Ledger, I thought his role could not be beaten – really sinister. Then along comes Joaquin Pheonix who simply knocks his portrayal of Joker out of the park. Pheonix rather than base his character on other Joker portrayals based his version on the 1928 film The Man who Laughs.
Personal opinion: The best film of this century so fa I am not going to get into the polemic that’s raging between hardcore dc fans and others. I’ve never liked comic books. I only know the characters through the films since it was a ‘bonus’ of my job to be invited or taken by fans to see comic books turned into live action films, amongst others. I worked in traditional animation, you did meet a lot of Marvel, dc, dic, etc. fans.
To the true fans I am politely say “he’s not the real psychopath Joker? Who cares as long as this interpretation is brilliant”. I guess if I add “get a life” this comment will not appear, but I must do it for the sake of good, deep, thoughtful cinema.
This film is so well researched it has the seal of approval of many psychiatrists.
A psychopath cannot be cured. It’s not an illness they contract, it’s a state of being. They are scary but have only one tune, lack of empathy, enjoying causing pain to others, no notion of a difference between right and wrong -fine, that’s three- but they work hand in hand.
Nicholson is scary whether or not he’s wearing make-up. Heath Ledger was a wonderful actor, his performance of Joker was great -though still a model psychopath- but it often felt to me like he was somehow impersonating Tom Waits in some of his live work or even interviews. (I love Tom Waits but I kept waiting Ledger to break into ‘The Piano Has Been Drinking”).
Purists have been going on and on about details most people don’t even know about, having come to Joker via Batman films, not the comic.
This film is profound. Everything from the script, the camera work, the music, (don’t get me started in the other argument: “Oh my! They used a Gary Glitter song”. It was perfect for that scene and the perv is behind bars…
The storyline and the way it develops is amazing. Joker isn’t a psychopath, he’s a downtrodden, abused, laughed at, rejected, beaten man who already has cerebral lesions or neurological troubles caused as a child by his mother and her lovers. He’s odd. And society doesn’t care for oddity. Ours doesn’t either.
He has empathy, loves his mother, is full of emotions, wants to make people laugh even though his life has never felt right or real to him, and these get trampled upon again and again until he truly becomes Joker: the very last scene when he leaves bloody footsteps as he exits the interview he had with his psychiatrist.
I am not condoning murder, but we are talking about a fictional character who was born in a comic book. A little suspension of disbelief and a little tolerance aren’t too much to ask.
Every person he has killed till this point do not deserve death, but they are rotten, including as it turns out his lying delusional abusive adoptive mother.
The psychiatrist’s murder marks the entrance of Joker, SHE did not deserve it. Yet he’s still not a psychopath. Psychosis yes, psychopathy no. He has crossed a line, and is unlikely to turn back, but he’s not another psycho villain who has no history. The history of a psychopath would not elicit much sympathy.
And that is the beauty of this film, the background it gives to an interesting maladjusted man whom society fails again and again.
I’ve not spoken of Joaquin Phoenix’s performance yet because it is probable than a lesser actor might not have managed to convey this array of emotions, his original naivety, the symptoms of his lesions, the development of his character. Every time he dances I shudder. He has absorbed Arthur Fleck down to the bones.
There are great actors out there, but not one could have given this performance without turning it into a caricature. His Arthur Fleck is as real as Joker. At last someone who really deserved an Oscar, and received it not to praise, thank, and flatter; but to draw parallels between the rejection and belittling of his character with the rejection and belittling of races, gender, species. Of difference. Of being the other. It was beautiful.
I don’t see why this film should have cut the cord with Batman. Gotham is exactly the city that treads on the less fortunate -i.e. most everyone. Why should Bruce’s father be a nice man because he usually is?
Forget those details. Keep the vaguest outline of Batman in you head, because the elements of future stories are there, be open-minded, and perhaps you’ll wish he was the real Joker in Batman -a complicated person, not a cardboard villain, not just another gratuitously cruel psychopath.
Watch it again again and discover more and more subtleties.
Hat off to cast, production/writing/directing team, not forgetting the crew.
In an age of fluff that relies on special effects and gorgeous leads, Joker stands out proudly.
And again, hat off Mr. Phoenix.
Great buttttt packaging Joker was great. But the packaging and outer compartment of the disc was slightly damaged due to the shipping causing the edges to get compressed and for the cardboard print to deteriorate.
Will not be everyone’s cup of tea It really does depend on what you expect from another ‘Superhero’ based film. This is not full of ‘crash, bang, wallop’ but is more deeper than that. Good acting and a storyline many will not put with the traditional Batman theme. I enjoyed it but I know others that thought it was poor – it won’t be to everyone’s liking.
No joke, add this Joker to your film collection. I ordered this movie as soon as I’d seen at the cinema. There are some film performances that you know are just award winning and mesmerising – and Joaquin Phoenix’s fits that bill. I was uncomfortable with the film and Phoenix’s portrayal of The Joker, but that was probably the director’s intention. This is, without a doubt, one of the best films of the year.
Superb Loved it, this one takes you back to who the Joker really is and how he was made, heath ledger’s performance in dark knight was incredible but Phoenix has got it more historically accurate and down to the Jokers real bones.
A must see and the best DC movie in a very long time.
A modern classic worthy of the hype. A dark broading character study of the legendary villians origins.. Brought to the screen from the mind of Todd Phillips and driven from inspiration from many sources and influences from the graphic novels of Alan Moore, and Frank Miller, to the cinematic classics of Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy.. Falling Down, and others.
Jaquin Phoenix knocks it out of the park in his stunning portrayal of a man struggling with his mental health condition, and trying to gain acceptance and notice in a world of torment and pain from an unforgiving uncaring society that is blighted from cuts to social services, and health care in this dystopian nightmare vision of a dark depressing Gotham city where the class divide and oppression is unmistakably evident. After a series of unfortunate events, and deeply personal discoveries in Arthur flecks (Joaquin phoenix) life he slowly descends into paranoia and madness, with a ferocious traumatic despear, and sledge hammer intensity so rarely portrayed convincingly with total conviction, and blighted with a nervous tic like condition where he is afflicted with a maniacal painful laugh at inappropriate social moments which he has no control over. All of which crescendos like a pressure cooker letting of steam when he learns about his childhood past and the horrirfying truth of his upbringing.. The Joker is born, and he takes no prisoners in this incredible modern day Oscar winning throughly deserved accolades classic.. Brilliant stuff.
Intense film This is an intense film, with Oscar winning performances. Beautifully lit and shot… incredibly good. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the use of a Gary Glitter cover in the soundtrack. Not good. Other than that, this is a superb film.
One of the best films ever made Wow what a great film.
Brilliant performances all around, especially Joaquin Phoenix as Joker. It is such a different film from the standard comic book film, it is honestly so refreshing.
The score is fantastic and well deserved the oscar win. It really fits the tone of the movie.
Dc don’t make good films often, but when they do, they are amazing. Just as good as the dark knight in my opinion. This film is not for everyone though, extremely dark for the entire movie.
This is up there with The Shawshank Redemption as being one of my favourite films of all time.
Excelle He plays Jopker so well and nice to see some insight into how he got to be Joker. really helps shed light on what it is like living mental health, being in that position myself is part of why I like this nad the Joker in general.
Far away from perfect film, but better than average Yes, Joaquin Phoenix definitely deserved all of the awards he got for this film. I really can’t give the film 5 stars though as it was exactly what I expected. No surprises, no shocking scenes, it was what I thought it was going to be. It lacked that “umph”. However, as I previously mentioned, Joaquin was amazing. The film – not so much.
Good Film But Is 4K HDR Really Worth This Price Tag... Having recently purchased a 4K Blu Ray player to go with the TV I brought last year my biggest disappointment regarding 4K and HDR is that there is absolutely ZILCH out there for Music and that is why I put off buying the player a year later. There is not likely to be anything for music either simply because the biggest majority of artists I like still put their concerts on DVD or 1080p Blu Ray and its far too expensive for them to film a concert as it is without adding more expense just for the sake of 4K.
I am not a movie buff and I do not buy a lot of films at all and I have about 50 – 60 on Blu Ray which is nothing in relation to couple of hundred and more I have on DVD & Blu Ray for music. The last film I brought on Blu Ray was Toy Story 4 last year and that was the first film I have brought in about 4 years. I was also quite shocked to see that it had practically nothing in the way of bonus features especially in relation to how all of the previous 3 releases have a ton of them. But having a glance at the 4K release I noticed they had a lot more on that release and this just goes to show how they are trying to get people to spend more money on 4K and quite frankly it’s just another ploy in the rip off market.
One of the other reasons I decided to get a new Blu Ray player was down to Sony taking away Amazon Prime on my old player and that also never had the Netflix app either and being that I do watch the odd movie on Prime and Netflix and I enjoy surround sound I needed both of these apps on my player to get the benefit out of my AV Receiver. Being as I brought the player I thought well I might as well buy some 4K HDR content and I noticed a couple of bargains on Amazon and purchased Planet Earth II for 13 bucks and Spider-man Into the Spider-Verse for 10 bucks and I honestly was impressed. I had also pre-ordered the Joker basically because reviews of the 4K HDR were raving about it, so I thought why not go the whole hog and get the Steelbook for 30 bucks.
It turned out that the most expensive 4K HDR content I purchased out of the three I purchased was the Joker in the pack. Being that all of these three purchases I made also came with 1080p Blu ray disc it was easy enough for me to load the standard blu ray into one player and the 4K into the other to make comparisons. In all honesty for the life of me I cannot see what the hell the difference is between the two yet you can spot it a mile off on those other two purchases I made for less than half the price. I enjoyed the film and had not seen it but I have to say spending 30 bucks on a film taught me a good lesson and no way on this earth would I do that again.
From now on I will stick to older films that are less than 15 bucks and, in all honesty, 4K HDR Bly Rays should only cost a couple of quid more than a standard blu ray. 4k is not 4 times the picture quality and at the most it’s only twice as good with the right film that is. I was not even impressed with the picture they stuck on the Steelbook. The movie might be good but the format was a rip off and the 4 stars I gave was for the movie. As for the 4K HDR quality that was very disappointing.
Phoenix gives a stunning oerformance! Mesmerising performance by Phoenix! A near perfect and believable background story of Batman’s nemesis. And a wider study of the consequences of the neglect of mental health and social care systems. One very OTT violent scene that I’m not sure was necessary but did bring home the unpredictability ( as well as the making ) of a psychopath
Great film, has audio description ☺️ I loved this film!!! Joaquin Phoenix well deserved his Oscar for the role as the emotionally damaged Arthur Fleck. It is an interesting new take on a familiar story and is not your typical comic book movie. As a blind customer, I am pleased to report that the DVD version. has audio description.

Really highlights mental health issues Not at all what I expected. Very dark reflection of society and very realistic.
A good film, well acted, enjoyed watching it, compelling!
The Joker (Origin Story) This is the Jokers Origin Story about how Arthur Fleck becomes Bruce Waynes Arch Nemesis The Joker. The Backstory is great and fills in a lot of holes for people who maybe never Read the Comics. I had Read a few as a Kid but couldn’t ever Find the Reason for the connection between the two Characters which is seen in numerous comics shows and Movies over the years. The Real Hero of this Film is Joaquin Phoenix for his Portrayal of DC Comics most infamous Villain talking of which Joaquin Phoenix more than Deserves his Oscar Congrats. This Film is a Great Watch for almost all audiences as there’s a deeper meaning which surrounds Mental Illness and the Challenges we all Face on a Daily basis. Overall this Movie has to be the Best of all DC comics Releases so far and Sorry to Jared Leto but DC needs to keep Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker the Foundations have been set for some Great Films to come..
Disturbing. A well written and acted film that I found disturbing.
Yes I know that the Joker is a psychopath, but I was hoping for a comic take, not a clinical film.
It was good but not for me.
Hmmm. Steelbook looks tremendous, lead actor is superb but feel this movie is a tad over hyped. Unusual origin story on one of DCs most valuable villains, watched it thinking Phoenix is a superb actor but……hmm.
The batman big bad mad oh and crazy bad man..but it was all for art.. Its was pretty good film but there’s only just so much and man there was several things that were a bit drab 8/10
A must see performance by Phoenix So I’m not a huge comic book fan, although I grew up with brothers who read the marvel comics and while the Joker was big part Batmans story, this film goes beyond that and sit alone on its own. It challenges the way we live now, how fast, politically broken and morally corrupt we are as a species.
However, everything is at the centre of this film ultimately deals with a kid from a dysfunctional childhood who has brought his issues into his adulthood and now poorly treated tries to make sense of the world and a slave to his mental health issues
Joaquin deserves every accolade he receives for this as does Todd, the director, the music is excellent, and every actor delivers their part convincingly. Harrowing, funny, sad but touching and of the zeitgeist re mental health and politics, great entertainment.
Must watch - some of the best acting I’ve ever seen! Pre-ordered and arrived on release date as stated. Loved this film at the cinema and I’ve watched it another twice since I received the DVD. The acting is simply incredible, you can’t take your eyes of him in every scene. Within 10 ministers of seeing it at the cinema, I knew he’d win the Oscar! I’m not into Batman/super hero type films at all, but you don’t need to be to love this film. Anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, you must watch it. It’s also very relevant in reminding us why it’s so important to be open about discussing mental health these days. And getting the right support. Well done Joaquin Phoenix on the Oscar win, and well done Amazon for the great service once agai
BRILLIANT, no fancy OTT cgi effects I am one of those who hate super hero over the top marvel/dc movies (except for the Christian bale trilogy) BUT this film is awesome the way joker develops is brilliant, no fancy flying etc just a well acted believable movie, no wonder he won an Oscar, we all loved i
Not a comic book movie. In a word this is superb. It is the best movie of Phoenix’s career and well deserving of his Oscar. It is a new take on the rise of The Joker with not a mention of the future Batman in sight.Brilliantly scripted directed and shot.Unlike any other DC or Marvel movie and all the better for it.My own personal view is that this should also have won the Best Picture Oscar. It is praise indeed these days for a movie to say that even Robert Di Nero in a small but telling part is back on fabulous form.A must see movie with some very good extras.

Hard Movie to Review This movie I find hard to review, the main actor hes great the soundtrack is very good, as a DC fan I liked this movie it’s not brillent
to me but I liked it I totally loved the last 30 mins it was brillent I think after a few watches I could give it full star’s, this movie can confuse you lol. If you suffer with a certain thing you will love this if you know someone who suffers it will relate to you

Joker is incandescent. Guiding light for DC movies. Fantastically sensitive portrayal of a vunerable, mentally ill man decending into madness. You are torn between feeling deeply for his treatment and suffering and afraid of the extreme lengths he is pushed to by society. Both a realistic study of the cruelties of people and a glorious transformation of a man into our favourite master of mayhem. Joaquin’s performance is instinctive and raw but with an indefinable elegance to it. Cinematically stunning. Is he really the Joker? Who knows. Fans of the existing Joker stories may be asking questions, but as with nearly every Batman character there are several versions of their origins. For me this film cleverly weaves the stories of Arthur Fleck and Bruce Wayne. A really exciting time for DC movies. Can’t wait to see what can be done with the rest of the Batman universe in this alternative vision. Sequel please!
Not your traditional comic book movie... Joker is a staggering movie, brave and clever in every aspect. I wasn’t expecting much when I went to see this and did so purely off the back of the strength of its reviews. I am so glad I did. A bold step for comic book movies this is very clearly not a part of the standard DCU. It’s dark, violent and grounded.
On 4K Blu-ray this movie really shines. The HDR cuts through the picture and the exceptional soundtrack is lifted by the Dolby Atmos.
Masterpiece. Amazing film!!! I remember going to the cinema to see this and from start to finish there was just complete silence in the room, no whispering or rustling of snacks, every single person in that room was just fixated on the screen. It truly is a masterpiece and you feel genuine sympathy for Arthur Fleck despite him obviously being “the baddie ” The music is haunting and beautiful. Joaquin’s performance is just out of this world!! Must watch!

A superb viewpoint on the cruelty of man and what wrath such cruelty can bring Watching this in the fug of Oscar buzz for Joaquin Pheonix and with the veil of controversy draped over this film, both me and my wife had missed it at the cinema; my wife especially viewing with trepidation over the controversy which she thought was graphic in nature.
This simply isn’t the case though the murders come by surprise and soaked in blood. The controversy is very much aimed at what this films means. Pheonix’s character Arthur Fleck is a man with mental health issues, including an uncontrollable laugh, and this man is cast down with the soddomites into Gotham’s underbelly where all that awaits him is working as a clown for a pittance and unfulfilled dreams of becoming a stand up comic when he isn’t funny at all. Served cold with a plate of a similarly pyschotic mother and a world that willingly kicks this man down at every opportunity, sadness and frustration turns into reprisal against the elite and the mockers and before you know it, Arthur Fleck is the catalyst for revolution – and that’s the controversy, whether such a murderous anti-hero can be galvanised by the folk of the city. A phenomenal film and an exceptional re-imagining of the Joker origin story where Pheonix is his own Joker but adds the odd splash of both Nicholson and Ledger to his performance (and thankfully no Leto), I wholeheartedly recommend a watch.
Joker is a must see movie. Not for kids, teens especially.... Whether you’re an old skool joker enthusiast then this will not disappoint, movie is so compelling in the sense of mental heath, and actually Murray named him the joker after he was ridiculed on his show. Felt a very deep sense of sadness watching it. As society against Arthur was horrible. He clearly blows, and this shows in the movie. Was a little confused as when his neighbour asked him to leave, and am thinking we’ll she’s been to you’re show, he March’s in her flat planting lips on her. But after a few watches, and many more to come, it’s his imagination. I absolutely love this movie, amd no there isn’t any vat of chemicals or the ludicrously crazy joker. But this is a lot more compelling, and anyone struggling with mental health will immediately, relate and sympathise with Arthur. A truly epic production, and acting is out of this world. Already tried to find out if there is going to be a sequel, was a blunt no, but director went on to say that number 2 is always the best so can always live in hope. This is a must see. Very dark, deep and saddening. But also inspires in a weird ish way. Enjoy this movie if you haven’t already. Joaquin Phoenix is awesome. As saw him in the movie sister brothers which is also excellent. Western movie. But to see the transformation he must of undergone Is truly extraordinary.
A very unique take on the world's most iconic supervillai We’ve had so many incarnations of the Joker over the years that present him in such different ways, whether it be Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, or my personal favourite Mark Hamill. Each version seems to focus on a different aspect of the character’s psyche (the gangster, the anarchist etc). This version is much more of an in-depth look at what made him turn into that psychopath that we all recognise. The film is very much a character study rather than an action film, it definitely deviates from the traditional conventions of comic book films, with a very dark and grim tone that kind of reminds me of films like Taxi Driver and American Psycho. At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a Joker movie that didn’t feature Batman, since I love that dynamic between the 2 of them. However, since the Joker is my favourite fictional villain,I figured I’d find it interesting. I’m glad I gave the film a chance.
The main selling point is of course the performance of Joaquin Phoenix, he is outstanding and deserving of his recent Oscar win. You feel sympathy for him, but at the same time you feel unsettled by him. From the get-go, the first time you see him talking to his therapist, he starts uncontrollably laughing due to his condition for about a minute straight. On one hand, people might think the moment drags on a bit, but I think it works as it actually makes you uncomfortable. As the film goes on, he slowly descends further into madness as more and more aspects of his life spiral out of control. Once he fully becomes the Joker, he feels like a different person, even down to his body language. The supporting cast are all great, especially Robert De Niro, but they are all used sparingly, since Joaquin is (rightly) always the main focus and he is in pretty much every scene. There are several moments of tension throughout the 2-hour runtime that culminate with brutal violence that feels very grounded and realistic. The infrequency of action also adds to this, since it feels a lot more visceral when the violence does eventually happen.
If you appreciate comic book movies that push the boundaries and that try approaching the genre from a different angle (films like Logan or The Dark Knight trilogy), I strongly recommend Joker, though it’s not a film for everyone. It’s a bit of a slow-burn with very little action and is very dark, but I, for one, really enjoyed it.
A disturbing but enthralling film. Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar win was well-deserved. This is quite easily the best movie I have watched in some time, years, if not, decades. It is a difficult watch at some points, but I consider it to be a triumph on so many levels. It is the perfect antidote to all that loud and bombastic CGI’d up nonsense that comic book movies are nowadays. It felt like a much more personal and grounded movie, and it gave me serious food for thought about how people with extremely poor mental health and physical damage are treated in modern society.
I feel that Joaquin Phoenix quite rightfully deserved the Oscar win for Best Actor for this movie. His acting in this movie swings from sympathetic to repulsive to shocking, often within minutes, it’s powerful but understated. One scene in particular stands out, as the character makes a shocking discovery and the implications of it hit him hard. Never in my life have I seen an actor accurately portray so many conflicting emotions within the space of mere seconds.
Again, this movie is not for the faint-hearted, but if this is indicative of the direction that WB/DC’s standalone movies will be taking, then I for one am looking forward to seeing what movies are released in the future. It reminded me, like others have said, of Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, but it also reminded me of The Crow, The Dark Knight etc in its nature. It doesn’t intend to be a Batman movie, even though it has a Batman character in it, and it’s all the better for it. I think everyone is a wee bit fed up of the whole Batman origin thing being told umpteen times.
Highly recommended, I can’t say enough good things about it.
A thought provoking drama which doesn’t fall in line with a traditional superhero film I’m sure I’m one of the many hundreds of 5 star reviewers on here reviewing this wonderful film.
I’m a big comic buff and I’d say equally as big a Joker buff.
I’m well versed in Batman’s history and the Jokers many histories and incarnations.
Well, this is a spoiler-ish review, please stop reading now if you haven’t watched the movie.
Well, for the film… I’ve never seen this take on The Joker before.
I was expecting a ‘Joker’ from Brian Azzarello (check out the graphic novel for another fantastic visual take on the Joker)
I’m an Autistic man. I make no secret of it and I have my struggles and will always continue to have them and this is where I relate to ‘Arthur’
It’s a shockingly pessimistic film, with tones of dystopia which are shockingly similar to our own world, hell, it could be our world. Are we really watching a DC movie?
We’ve always attached ourselves to symbols, like The Batman for example so this take on Joker doesn’t come as too much of a shocker for me personally. It could under the right circumstances possibly happen if the wind blew the right way so to speak.
Mr. Phoenix took a very psychopathic killer with my many mental health labels attached to his psyche and made him… Relatable? I don’t feel empathy much, I don’t understand it, but the parallels of my life are shockingly similar.
This brings up for me the depth of mental health, neurological issues and the outside worlds view of them.
Shun them, throw us away, cast away thy person one does not understand.
It’s fantastic and raw cinema to watch because it does happen.
I have to throw compliments to DeNiro also, he plays his usual faces and his acting is as stellar as it’s always been.
Conroy and Beetz (Whom looked stunning) and the smaller gentleman Leigh Gill were all amazing.
As I said, I did not expect this Joker.
I’ve seen them all and read most from Mischievous clown to Serial Killer and this one is one of my top 3.
It’s fresh because it steps out of the box and Joker is still anonymous (Adoption through his Mother)
I was worried with him having a name that the mystique of Joker would vanish. His depth lies in the fact we know nothing of him, like a ghost almost.
It’s a slow burning film in my opinion, but that’s fine because it plays like a drama rather than a traditional DC/Marvel superhero flick. It peels back layers at a time so there is a lot to digest.
The ending is truly a masterwork with The Wayne’s latest cinema death, but with Mr.Phoenix ending lines, it just ends beautifully.
The soundtrack is a triumph also. Real rustic and grating music that pierces ones ears but flows with the mood so perfectly.
The make up of Joker I’m a bit iffy with, but none the less the ending smile made up for it.
None the less, a true cinematic masterpiece.
The dvd I received from Amazon was with a cardboard sleeve and a basic white dvd box.
Box is flimsy as expected but the disc played fine.
It’s a healthy 117 minutes long.
Languages are English, Castilian and Spanish.
Subtitles are English, Castilian, Spanish, Danish, Greek, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish.
Apparently it’s a dual layer format disc or at least it says so on the box.
Special features which I skimmed through seem to be Director Todd Philips talking and various editing scenes and alt scenes.
All in all, I’m sorry for such a lengthy review and if you read all of it then thank you.
It’s well worth watching and it’s a thought provoking drama.
No Joke Did Phoenix deserve the Oscar for this? Sadly, yes. This is not a comic book movie. It’s a character study of why someone in a modern world finds themselves pushed to an extreme and with one turn of events finds they’re no longer in control. What you do in that event defines who you become. Arthur has a condition, he’s living hand to mouth in a city that is falling apart. His home life is bleak, his work is all he has. When events take everything from him he has nowhere left to go. The scene where he finally breaks is scored with a simple orchestral piece. Who he was is gone. Who he is takes time to evolve, but watching him fall is more painful than any simple comic book origin film. This won’t change the mainstream origin movies that will come. But it marks a stark take on the genre. One that deserves the awards and recognition.
Exceptional One of the best films ever. Ultimately, this is a complete movie. The acting, the story, the characters, the music, the cinematography is all fantastic. It is so reflective of real life and although it is hyperbolic and symbolic regarding the real world, it is definitely a shadow of reality. Touching, sad and enthralling.
Is it inevitable that a difficult childhood . . . For those who have read the Batman boos this may as always be problematic – although trying to integrate the character into the existing story line we all know The Joker there is always a bit of ambiguity about were he comes from. The hint that he is somehow the darker shadow of the chaotic nature of the existence of The Batman- not just his nemesis but somehow needed to justify Batman – an evil balance.
There is however in the film the question in the mind as to does a traumatic childhood inevitably lead to an evil adulthood. Clearly this is not the case in the reality of the world we live in – but in the world of Batman it is a real question that is counterpoint to Bruce Wayne own story – perhaps the difference is that Wayne has the love and care of an adult caregiver (Albert). You will have to make up your own mind if you watch this dark tale – if like me you know the tragic place that it is going to lead.
The film is a stand alone so you don’t need to know all about BM and the back story – but its all there for those who do want back story and hopefully might draw some others into the world of Gotham City if not.
It is a dark and at times violent film and if you don’t like clowns probably best to give it a miss! 🙂
Edge of your seat viewing. Gripping action drama. Honestly such a moreish film. Your left feeling deflated that it has ended and wish there was an extra hour at least. This is going to be a amazing set of films and I cant wait for the next one! I once believed noone could ever play the joker as good as heath ledger. But the way this joker is portrayed is absolute genius! Thankyou for making such a awesome film.
The real V for vendetta Who’d of thought it it a marvel comic character would beat Alan moores character. more real understandable and realistic in a harsh world built on capatalism which is the real cause of so many destroyed lives. as musolini calls it fascism should be called corperate fascism for that is what it truly is and the young batmans father is the bad guy in this. Loved this movie also shows us how people become more nasty and primative the worse off they get in the big citys especially.

Joaquin 's masterpiece A very challenging film. If you like to be challenged, go for it. If not, you will probably switch off after 5 minutes.
Excellent performance. Great script. Joaquin Phoenix is given a great opportunity and produces a career defining turn. If you stay the course and stick with it till the end, this is worth every penny.
A work of a I’ve rapidly been going off the whole Comic to Movie Franchises, & despite being a big fan of DC Comics back in the 80’s, the DC Movies have, until now, been pretty bad, especially compared to the Marvel offerings.
This movie was exceptional, mainly down to the superb acting skills of Mr Phoenix, but also the atmosphere generated by the Director & the cinematography generally. It put me in mind of the classic movies of the 70’s, like Midnight Cowboy or Taxi Driver for example. The violence isn’t nearly as bad as been portrayed, to the extent that I’ve recommended it to my partner, who deplores all things violent. It’s used when necessary to show Joker’s rapid descent into madness, at the end of the day he is a psychopath & for the sake of the story line this needs to be reflected.
Joachim deserves every award he gets for this movie, I’ve honestly never seen a performance like it. This film will go down as a classic in it’s own right in this reviewers humble opinion.
Highly recommended, It’ll stand several watches I would imagine.
*Update* My partner loved JP’s performance, & the film, tho she found it very dark, which, let’s face it, it is. Managed to warn her just prior to the 2 violent scenes in the movie.
*Update* I need to also acknowledge the well deserved Oscar to Hildur Guonadottir for the excellent & atmospheric score, it’s a perfect fit for this movie.
Such a great movie! Such a great film and unlike any other ‘Gotham City’ based film I’ve seen. It’s refreshing, disturbing and entertaining all at the same time. Of course, Joachim Phoenix’s performance is outstanding and there are echoes of the original story but the angle this film comes from is totally unexpected. Great film, great cast, great cinematography…. highly recommended!

Once in a lifetime performance The whole film from beginning to end is absolutely riveting, Phoenix delivers an Oscar worthy performance every second he’s on screen, I’ve bought it on digital download and on 4K UHD Steelbook release as an Amazon exclusive so I’ll look forward to re-watching it when that arrives next week.
Beware! A perfectly-timed expose of modern life. Joaquin Phoenix embodies the tragic downfall that can be associated with mental health if unmanaged and begs us all to look out for each other. It also depicts the growing narcissistic self-entitlement that so many display today when sharing space with others both physically and online. We better watch out!
I probably dont need to say this ! This film was the best and most disturbing film I have seen in a long time, I was torn with sympathy and horror for the main character. I could not look away though at times I wanted to, the main star seemed completely absorbed like a spirit into the character he was playing, even though he is so well known. I remained haunted by the ‘feel’ of the film for a long time afterwards. All of the actors deserved awards for their efforts in this film. It will be a while though before I am ready to give a second viewing!
Joker is a truly great film Absolutely wonderful film. I have now watched it 3 times, and the cinematography, sound design, direction and acting are all incredible. The subject matter might not appeal to everyone, but as a sufferer of mental health issues this movie spoke to me on another level. Amazing.
Screen Transcendent Emotions Emotions are everywhere!!! The acting is so surreal and the presentation of the story is just so efficient that it plays with your emotion. The movie stirs up something in you that wants to stand up and do something! Which is Joker’s effect on Gotham City, by the way. The movie will have that effect on you as well.
Beautifully shot cincal film about narrative I like this a lot! Great film that you can rewatch and pick up new details from. True to the Jokers’ origin as being multiple-choice, so can the viewers’ interpretation of this film be. Iconic scenes and great acting make it an easy ride.

superb Brilliant movie and a superb performance from Phoenix as Arthur Fleck.
A different Joker to ledgers but equally as good.
For those concerned about the violence, don’t be , it is intense but brief. Films like John Wick with their senseless murder and gun glorification are far worse.
The media furore was totally unwarranted and I think based more on the fact one of the main themes of the movie is uncomfortable for the rich and powerful in society.
Simply Stunning Fantastic film from start to finish, seeing this “mentally ill loner” transform into the might Joker.
His final transformation and dance down the stairs made the hairs on my neck stand up, but you need to see the first part of the film to appreciate it.
It’s literally one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
Must Watch!!!! Incredible. Brilliant film. Excellent acting. It’s a deep dark study into society and how we treat those less fortunate or less well socialised or even just our treatment of mental illness. It’s just incredible. And the story shows so brilliantly how the Joker evolves from this loner-type character into a murdering anti-hero, and you just can’t help but root for him. Superb just superb.
Stunning! This is a powerful movie, you not only watch it, you feel it and it stays with you long after the ending. It is dark and brutal, yet there is a compelling vein of compassion that runs throughout for the main character. Spectacular performance from Joaquin Phoenix, if a sequel is considered in the future, it must only be with him in the title role, he brought the Joker to life.
Left me wanting more. A well paced character study of someone we all think we know well from the DC universe. Heath Ledger gave a chilling and ebullient portrayal; which I loved. Joaquin Phoenix is just simmering and we did not yet see the full extent of the horror he could unleash. I think a follow on could be interesting and how he builds the criminal empire/gang but keeping it as real as possible as in Nolan’s trilogy. Would love to see the next one end with the final frame of Joker coning face to face with Batman.

Love this film This fills in the gaps before The Joker became bad and tells the story of a man that was oppressed and then rebels against it having found out his life was mostly a lie. Cannot wait for the sequel and all the other Batman type movies. Well done Warner Brothers another classic. Buy this and you will not be disappointed.
Homage to the last king of comedy So am I the only one who figured out this has nothing to do with Batman and has more to do with a violent version of the last king of comedy. Hence why Robert de nero played an elevated version as the host of a comedy talk show when years ago he played the joke.
Memorable and dark, the best movie I have ever see I loved this movie. I was nervous I was going to come away from seeing it at the cinema depressed. However I did not feel that way. This movie is dark and menacing, It tackles subjects that need to be tackled. Mental health. It does so in a beautifully dark but insightful way. I was entertained and educated. Joaquin is an amazing actor. This is a great film.
I have bought it to stream and I am looking forward to watching it later. A must see.
They say Marvel has the best Superheroes. DC the best villains. Here's why. Last time i saw a film this good was Mad Max Fury Road. That film’s trailer was so good i recall wondering if the whole film is half as good as that trailer, we’re in for a ride. As it happened MMFR surpassed all expectations.
The Joker teaser trailer is possibly one of the finest trailers ever assembled setting the scene but saying nothing else. Again i thought the same. Again it surpassed every expectation, and then some. This is not a superhero film but set in the same universe as Martin Scorsese’s early films such as Taxi Driver and King of Comedy as well as films like Death Wish. Although supposedly set in 1981, it feels very 70’s. The last hurrah for great American cinema.
Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck is the beginning, middle and end of this near masterpiece. The screenplay, music, cinematography and direction are first rate.
Controversial because it humanises insanity which may be a problem for some. It plays all too close to the conflicted world we have created in the 21st century.
The screenplay throws enough curveballs to make it all make sense at it’s conclusion. Oh what conclusion. What a joke. What a Joker. As that it also makes it very frightening, hence the backlash by people who not want to think beyond their popcorn.
Not only one of the finest films of the year, but of the decade.
It’s NOT political, just a truly great film Yesterday, I submitted to my curiosity, born out of a “rave” review that I’d read in a monthly magazine (one of many, I’m sure). As a rule, I like character studies, and I don’t like films which overly rely on unnecessary gimmicks or special effects (Joker has neither, thankfully). The cinematography is excellent; dark, dull, dingy, wet, yet never consciously tries to be atmospheric. As you may be aware, the storyline revolves around the origins and development of the main character, from humble and troubled beginnings to what he eventually becomes. Yes, there is violence, with one scene in particular which stuck in my mind after the final credits rolled. That said, I think that the 15 age rating is just about right. If anyone still has any doubts about whether Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest actors of his (or any current) generation, go and watch this film and prepare to have those doubts well and truly blown away. His performance is an astonishing tour de force, fully capturing the essence of the main character. In the film, things eventually start to unravel, and he begins to fight back against a society that he sees as deeply uncaring and unfair. Some critics have, er, criticised the use of what they deem to be politically incorrect music by Gary Glitter in one of the scenes near the end of the film, but to me it makes perfect sense (it’s all about context). Maybe you’ll understand when you watch the film. I have deliberately avoided going into much detail as I am not one for wanting to spoil things for anyone else. In conclusion, I have seen many films in my time, but very rarely have I seen a film that has you in its grip from start to finish. Joker is one of those films.
Five Stars Doesn't Guarantee You'll Enjoy It! This as been given mixed reviews elsewhere but I see so far here it’s been getting consistent five stars. Elsewhere there seems to be two camps. Those who love it and those who hate it. And I’m somewhat torn between the two.
Ho I gave it five stars because I believe it deserves five and in some respects it is a masterpiece in the vain of ‘Taxi Driver’ or ‘Midnight Cowboy’ those gritty sixties dark street movies. While watching I was sometimes thinking this is slow and tedious then seconds latter I’d be thinking how well crafted and gripping it is. But by the end I felt I’d experienced possibly a classic movie of tomorrow.
The story, the genesis of problily Batman’s most famous villain, is not a super hero, or even super villain story, so if comic book superheros are not your cup of tea don’t worry it can be viewed as a regular melodrama. Batman is not seen as Bruce Wain is still only a school boy at the time of this story and is seen but only as that school boy with no reference to what he will become, except in the minds of those that already know.
Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is a down at heel agency jobbing clown, and not a very good one, who has identity problems, a condition that gives him laughing fits at times of stress, that can be more than embarrassing in public and leads to more than one conflict and violent reactions from strangers, and an inability to always distinguish fantasy from reality. It’s his struggle to make head way and be accepted in a cold and disinterested world and how his problems spiral out of control and lead from social inadequacy to self defence manslaughter, crime and eventually murder. It is loaded with social comment of the rich being incapable of empathising with those less well off and the war between the classes.
All in all a much more intelligent story than what I feared just not quite Shakespeare but for something born out of a comic book character it’s very good but those expecting something more faster paced and exciting it may be somewhat disappointing.
PS. one small item that surprised me was that in a scene were Arthur Fleck is dancing down some street steps the music in the background is ‘Rock an roll part 2’.
Are they really paying royalties to Gary Glitter?
Best film of 2019! Absolutely brilliant film, my favourite of the year so far! I don’t even know where to start with a review so I won’t say too much, but I was blown away by Joaquin Phoenix ‘s performance and I felt it was close to perfection in it’s cinematography, editing and script and I also loved the soundtrack, very eerie.
I haven’t seen a few of this years big releases yet to make a final call but at the moment I would put this at the top for 2019 and can easily see it staying there.
Joke Just finished watching Joker and got to say Joaquin Phoenix’s acting was absolutely brilliant I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get an oscar! Film maybe slow for some as it’s not your typical comic book movie, but it tells a dramatic story. The acting, the feeling and emotionally bold storytelling is realistic yet dark.
PS. please ignore the PC wet wipe critics giving negative reviews saying it will make people go crazy. Just go and enjoy the film for what it is.
Joke My most anticipated film for the rest of the year since ‘Avengers: Endgame’. ‘Joker’ stars Joaquin Phoenix as a Arthur Fleck. A man suffering with mental illness and disregarded by society. This film chronicles his transformation into the Joker. This film has had heaps of praise and most recently a lot of controversy. Are both of these earned? The answer to that is ‘Yes.’
For a character study like this to work you have to have a well written and performances character. Arthur is essentially in every scene of Joker and if he isn’t it’s normally because it’s from his perspective. Phoenix gives a fierce and in no doubt iconic performance here. It’s a role that demands subtlety, physicality and dedication. Phoenix really delivers in all aspects, throwing himself head first into the role. He’s clearly lost a lot of weight, and really researched into mental illness and schizophrenia and really makes you feel sorry for Fleck. The laugh as well is fantastic, it’s a medical condition Arthur suffers with, he chokes, covers his face and clearly is pain when he’s laughing, it’s hard to watch and is so well done you’d think Phoenix actually suffered with it in real life. When he fully falls into the Joker persona it’s a intense and terrifying yet there’s also a sense of freedom to it. Phoenix adds more and more to Arthur as the film progresses and he loses it more and more and the scene where he’s in full costume descending down the stairs laughing, dancing and smoking is that pay off. There are couple of almost interlude sections where Arthur will just be completely lost in a almost ritualistic dance routine whilst trying to calm himself or prepare for something it’s truly fascinating to see. As for the last section… Coupled with De Niro, who’s recapturing his ‘The King Of Comedy’ days makes for an epic, devastating and perfect finale.
Speaking of De Niro, he isn’t phoning it in here at all (which he has done in recent smaller roles in less impressive films). He has a smaller role here but it’s great whenever he’s on screen as the talk show host Murray Franklin. Brett Cullen is great as Thomas Wayne and I like how they abandon the more positive traits of the character from some of the material that we’ve seen in the animated series and comics. Zazie Beets is good as Sophie, her and his mother (Frances Conroy) being the only two positives in his life.
From thematic and story perspective the film does lean and borrow heavily from ‘The King Of Comedy’ & ‘Taxi Driver’ (two great films to be inspired by) and is a definite slow burn which I do appreciate in my films, this does at times mean some scenes go on a bit too long and there are few that are slightly repetitive. Yes, there are nods to more than just Thomas Wayne in this film which I won’t spoil, due to them having a huge impact on the plot, they will prove devisive, I personally didn’t have a problem.
The technical aspects are also impressive. The set design of 80’s Gotham is a bleak, dirty, violent mass with a plague of ‘super rats’ due to the rich not helping or funding the cleaning of the sewers. The cinematography and lighting is perfect, making a filthy city genuinely beautiful at times. The score and soundtrack of this film also really elevate it to another level as well and I will definitely be listening to it when it’s fully relrsssd, haunting, epic and horrifying it really is a unique sound, especially paired with some excellent licensed soundtrack songs.
‘Joker’ is a game-changer within the comic book genre. A near-perfect take on an iconic villain with a outstanding lead performance, visually impressive lighting and cinematography and one of the best scores I have heard.
Superb acting
What an enthralling film. Savage. Forget the Batman theme and get involved in this. It’s not superhero or flashy but what a story. And the acting is beyond anything in this genre. It really is that good. Just not a superhero story! If you want that go elsewhere
Great prequel
I really had my doubts about this.
Joker is about how the Joker became the Joker .
Bits difficult to Watch
Watching someone slowly descend into madness was sometimes a hard watch – but beautifully acted and almost as good as Logan for more serious comic book films.
A film that should be watched however difficul
This was a film I was not expecting – certainly not from the comic book genre. This was thought provoking and the way it ties into the Heath Ledger Joker is very clever indeed. Outside that it provides an understanding into a simple reality – most evil is created by the society people live in – people are not born evil. A painful watch but worth the effort.
The Bes
For me, the best Joker will always be Heath, but this was something else entirely. Dark, hard to watch, even harder to process, nonetheless, by far the most brilliant film made this year. Made me want to look into the making of the film, which left me in awe. Joaquin’s acting was 100% Oscar (and everything else’s) worthy.

Overrated
Over rated but has a good message thrown in. People are hypocrites by sighting this movie and then going out looting.

Very dark but entertaining movie, worthy of the Oscar it wo
A superb film
An excellent film. Worth a couple of hours of your life. I do miss the “extras” that most DVDs no longer contain, unless you are willing to pay premium prices.
If you like DC based movies you really should watch this.
Great movie
You really buy and watch this movie for Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of The Joker and he pulls it off very well. 🙂
I’m typically not a fan of movies that were heavily oscar-nominated – generally drawn out storylines about a person with a disability or challenge.
Loved the acting! not really a "joker" movie tho
It was an interesting film, long winded.. very good acting and fantastic job!!

An original take on the joke
This is a brilliant film and Joaquin Phoenix portrayal of the joker won him an Oscar.

Really Enjoyable
A proper movie with a great script
Dark subject that’s not watered down or inserting
any political, Gender laced or whatever agendas , just a dark grim
story about the rise of The joker (What timeline or story/movie arc i do not know)
just entertaining, a movie you can eat pop corn too
BRILLIANT
After Heath Ledger, I thought his role could not be beaten – really sinister. Then along comes Joaquin Pheonix who simply knocks his portrayal of Joker out of the park. Pheonix rather than base his character on other Joker portrayals based his version on the 1928 film The Man who Laughs.
I am not going to get into the polemic that’s raging between hardcore dc fans and others.
Phoenix.
Great buttttt packaging
Joker was great. But the packaging and outer compartment of the disc was slightly damaged due to the shipping causing the edges to get compressed and for the cardboard print to deteriorate.
Will not be everyone’s cup of tea
It really does depend on what you expect from another ‘Superhero’ based film.
Superb
Loved it, this one takes you back to who the Joker really is and how he was made, heath ledger’s performance in dark knight was incredible but Phoenix has got it more historically accurate and down to the Jokers real bones.
Intense film
This is an intense film, with Oscar winning performances. Beautifully lit and shot… incredibly good. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the use of a Gary Glitter cover in the soundtrack. Not good. Other than that, this is a superb film.
Wow what a great film.
If my review was helpful, let me know
Excelle
He plays Jopker so well and nice to see some insight into how he got to be Joker. really helps shed light on what it is like living mental health, being in that position myself is part of why I like this nad the Joker in general.
Good
Was a great film but for a movie based on the Joker it was not violent enough
Far away from perfect film, but better than average
Yes, Joaquin Phoenix definitely deserved all of the awards he got for this film. I really can’t give the film 5 stars though as it was exactly what I expected. No surprises, no shocking scenes, it was what I thought it was going to be. It lacked that “umph”. However, as I previously mentioned, Joaquin was amazing. The film – not so much.
Another film to love (or hate for some?)
Cant understand why some people dont like this film, especially the batman fans.
I love all the batman films especially the latest ones and for me it was like watching a prequel in some respect.
I also think the film shows how mental health can affect people and why this needs more and more support for people with these kind of problems.
All in all I think this film is unique and one I’ll watch many times over, just as I do with batman.
Great film, has audio description ☺️
I loved this film!!! Joaquin Phoenix well deserved his Oscar for the role as the emotionally damaged Arthur Fleck. It is an interesting new take on a familiar story and is not your typical comic book movie. As a blind customer, I am pleased to report that the DVD version. has audio description.

Really highlights mental health issues
Not at all what I expected. Very dark reflection of society and very realistic.
A good film, well acted, enjoyed watching it, compelling!
This is the Jokers Origin Story about how Arthur Fleck becomes Bruce Waynes Arch Nemesis The Joker.
Wirth the £10.00
Good film well acted. Worth the price paid. Missed it at the cinema, where it would have cost more to go and see it.
A must see performance by Phoenix
So I’m not a huge comic book fan, although I grew up with brothers who read the marvel comics and while the Joker was big part Batmans story, this film goes beyond that and sit alone on its own.
BRILLIANT, no fancy OTT cgi effects
I am one of those who hate super hero over the top marvel/dc movies (except for the Christian bale trilogy) BUT this film is awesome the way joker develops is brilliant, no fancy flying etc just a well acted believable movie, no wonder he won an Oscar, we all loved i
Not a comic book movie.

An absolute must-buy.
Must watch!

Watching this in the fug of Oscar buzz for Joaquin Pheonix and with the veil of controversy draped over this film, both me and my wife had missed it at the cinema; my wife especially viewing with trepidation over the controversy which she thought was graphic in nature.
We’ve had so many incarnations of the Joker over the years that present him in such different ways, whether it be Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, or my personal favourite Mark Hamill.
I’m sure I’m one of the many hundreds of 5 star reviewers on here reviewing this wonderful film.
Did Phoenix deserve the Oscar for this?
Exceptional
One of the best films ever.
The real V for vendetta
Who’d of thought it it a marvel comic character would beat Alan moores character. more real understandable and realistic in a harsh world built on capatalism which is the real cause of so many destroyed lives. as musolini calls it fascism should be called corperate fascism for that is what it truly is and the young batmans father is the bad guy in this. Loved this movie also shows us how people become more nasty and primative the worse off they get in the big citys especially.

Joaquin 's masterpiece
A very challenging film. If you like to be challenged, go for it. If not, you will probably switch off after 5 minutes.
Excellent performance. Great script. Joaquin Phoenix is given a great opportunity and produces a career defining turn. If you stay the course and stick with it till the end, this is worth every penny.
I’ve rapidly been going off the whole Comic to Movie Franchises, & despite being a big fan of DC Comics back in the 80’s, the DC Movies have, until now, been pretty bad, especially compared to the Marvel offerings.

The whole film from beginning to end is absolutely riveting, Phoenix delivers an Oscar worthy performance every second he’s on screen, I’ve bought it on digital download and on 4K UHD Steelbook release as an Amazon exclusive so I’ll look forward to re-watching it when that arrives next week.
Absolutely wonderful film. I have now watched it 3 times, and the cinematography, sound design, direction and acting are all incredible. The subject matter might not appeal to everyone, but as a sufferer of mental health issues this movie spoke to me on another level. Amazing.
Screen Transcendent Emotions
Emotions are everywhere!!! The acting is so surreal and the presentation of the story is just so efficient that it plays with your emotion. The movie stirs up something in you that wants to stand up and do something! Which is Joker’s effect on Gotham City, by the way. The movie will have that effect on you as well.
Beautifully shot cincal film about narrative
I like this a lot! Great film that you can rewatch and pick up new details from. True to the Jokers’ origin as being multiple-choice, so can the viewers’ interpretation of this film be. Iconic scenes and great acting make it an easy ride.

Brilliant movie and a superb performance from Phoenix as Arthur Fleck.
Fantastic film from start to finish, seeing this “mentally ill loner” transform into the might Joker.
His final transformation and dance down the stairs made the hairs on my neck stand up, but you need to see the first part of the film to appreciate it.
It’s literally one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

Love this film
This fills in the gaps before The Joker became bad and tells the story of a man that was oppressed and then rebels against it having found out his life was mostly a lie. Cannot wait for the sequel and all the other Batman type movies. Well done Warner Brothers another classic. Buy this and you will not be disappointed.
Homage to the last king of comedy
So am I the only one who figured out this has nothing to do with Batman and has more to do with a violent version of the last king of comedy. Hence why Robert de nero played an elevated version as the host of a comedy talk show when years ago he played the joke.
I loved this movie.
A must see.
Yesterday, I submitted to my curiosity, born out of a “rave” review that I’d read in a monthly magazine (one of many, I’m sure).
Absolutely brilliant film, my favourite of the year so far! I don’t even know where to start with a review so I won’t say too much, but I was blown away by Joaquin Phoenix ‘s performance and I felt it was close to perfection in it’s cinematography, editing and script and I also loved the soundtrack, very eerie.
I haven’t seen a few of this years big releases yet to make a final call but at the moment I would put this at the top for 2019 and can easily see it staying there.
Just finished watching Joker and got to say Joaquin Phoenix’s acting was absolutely brilliant I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get an oscar!
My most anticipated film for the rest of the year since ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
‘Send in the clowns.’
