The first motion lamp was designed in 1963 by an English engineer, Edward Craven Walker, who marketed it under the name Astro Lamp. In 1965, two American entrepreneurs saw the Astro lamp displayed at a trade show in Brussels, bought the rights to market the lamp worldwide and formed the Lava Corporation in Chicago. The Astro Lamp was renamed the LAVA Lamp and an American icon was born. They are constantly innovating and look forward to introducing categories and brands into their growing company. Always wanted a Lava lamp and my last bedside lamp breaking was the perfect excuse.
Only negative thing I can say about it is that it takes 30 mins to an hour for the lamp to heat up enough to do it’s thing, but once it’s going it’s great.

Really like it, stopped working within a year, tried to change bulbs for the 3rd time today and still no luck. Hoping seller contacts me to arrange an exchange 🙁 recommended tho.
i got this for my son and he loves it very easy to put together, he has it on every night . have seen them going a bit cheaper though
It was great while I had it for the 5 hours until my cat knocked it over and broke the light socket, NOT VERY DURABLE
I was sceptical about buying this after reading some of the reviews. But it’s perfect. No issues at all and brings back my 90’s memories (I had the exact same colour growing up).

If you buy this i would suggest changing the bulb 25w to a 30w wow what a difference the lave goes nuts and starts to work within an hour or two a found with the 25w that comes with it not strong enough

Looks excellent..nice colours and seems well made. Compared to the main brand of lava lamps…this is a very good alternative.
I absolutely love this lava lamp. It was so easy to assemble it came with a bulb and was flowing beautifully within an hour. The colours are gorgeous and you get the full rainbow effect. It’s just so wonderful to watch. I love everything about it. Even the colours of the aluminium holder are lovely too. I ordered this on a Sunday and it came the following Wednesday very safely packaged. All in all I am extremely happy with my rainbow lava lamp.
My 10 year old nephew loved it. Takes a while to get warm but so relaxing to watch when it gets going.
I am pleased item and so are my grand kids. It is mostly used in the bedroom as it has a calming light.
My 14 yr old wanted a mathmos lamp like my vintage one, pfft the prices… so we took a punt at this one.. very impressed. Nice quality, brightly coloured and as describedand heats up quite fast. Beautiful lamp

Great lamp. Very soothing. As it’s a bottle standing on a base and can get hot best to put it out of reach of young children.
My son (and daughter) love this. It takes a long time to heat up, so he is normally asleep before it gets going (over an hour)

Bought this for daughter, easily set up looks great, but it gets very hot after an hour or soo to touch
It blows bulbs and fuses too quickly. I have changed 4 times since purchase
using it for a year now and it’s working very well. makes my flat very cosy. it takes a little while to get started as it works with heat from the light bulb but that’s fine. only downside is that the glass containing the liquid sits very loosely on the metal frame and it’s not overly stable. you need to be very careful not to accidentally knock it over. overall good value for money.
my lava lamp stopped working I got it in the spring this year you can see a spring which stops the light

I was expecting this to be one of those purchases where I would be disappointed by its size and performance but OMG its awesome. It lights up the room lovely and its so calming ive found myself just starring at the bubbles and not realising lol. Well happy with my purchase
Having read the negative comments I ordered this for my daughters birthday. Well it arrived in one piece, followed the instructions and it is superb. Recommend this to anyone. Just follow the instructions.

The lava lamp came quickly and was super simple to set up. The one downside I’ve found is when it get up to temperature the wax tends to become small clumps instead of the classic large clumps. This doesn’t happen every time but it has happened a few times in the month I’ve had it.
It seems I was fortunate with my lamp, it’s not cloudy and it’s working perfectly fine. I’ve only used it for today though. But for 9 I’m very happy I’ve always wanted a lava lamp.
I’m very pleased with this lamp. The colours are true, and the quality is good. I bought it as a gift and tried it out. When I tried again it wouldn’t heat, as the spring in the base of the glass had come up. I realised it was because I had laid it on its side in the box while the wax had not fully cooled. Keep it upright!
Easy to assemble and use. Works fine. Not the best quality but what I expected for the price.

Bitterly disappointed was a Christmas present.
This was the colour I was after for ages but it was always out of stock or put up for a lot lot more so I was patient and here it is.
Not sure why all the bad reviews I guess I was lucky but I LOVE IT. And I highly recommend it.

The main problem with a lava lamp is it takes so long to start working properly (1.5 to 2 hours) but looks good when it does.
First lava lamp I’ve bought for my child. It wasn’t very well packed at all. Just some of those polystyrene balls all round it.
It does take a while to warm up.
You just have to make sure the conductive spring at the base is in the right place or it won’t heat up.
But when it does it’s very hypnotic! It works great as a night light and doesn’t heat up to the point where it’ll burn you. But overall it’s very cool to watch.
Works great my only problem is that the bulb blew after about a month of use so maybe stock up on some bulbs, other than that great product, looks cool and makes the room pink which is why we bought it, a lot nicer than led strips.
The product itself is great, however I bought it for someone for Christmas and the bulb blew a couple of weeks ago. Might have been a fluke though
Great little lamp and just fab to watch! The red wax in combination with the yellowish light against the matt black base and top makes the display look really warm and glow Always wanted one and they can be expensive!
For some reason came without any Amazon packaging which considering they can put a book and a record in a huge box is odd considering this is glass! Crushed the metal base a bit but it stretched back !
exactly like the pictures show and gives a really cool reflection on the wall! Does take a long time to get moving though, can take up to 3 hours ish

A few small bubbles in the glass but once the lamp is running they go unnoticed.
First run took about three hours to really get going and looks amazing.
There were electrical compliance labels on the inside of the stand right next to the bulb so I carefully removed them and cleaned away the glue so there was no chemical burning smell at all when it heated up, perfectly clean.
This lamp works fantastically well for being only 15! I’ve had some of the more expensive ones before and other than very little differences in quality, it still operates the same! Like all Lava Lamps they take a while to heat up, this one takes around 1.5-2 hours so give it that amount of time to look it’s best. Other tips are that the bulb is quite small so you have to put in in with your fingers… id recommend wiping the finger grease (we all have it naturally) off the bulb afterwards as this will heat up on the bulb and potentially cause it to break.
Good value for money, lovely colours as described, stable and happy with my purchase.
Packaging was already secure within it’s own box, therefore the size of the secondary packaging was on the large size requiring more packaging to avoid falling about inside. Excessive packaging. Warmth not noticed, not part of the products needs. Thickness, again not sure why you would ask this but lovely and relaxing to watch. Thank you Amazon.
Gets hot fairly quickly. After 3 hours all lava breaks down in to small bubbles. But for a few hours it’s absolutely sunning. Also the price is on point.
My son always wanted a lava lamp, so bought him this. They do get VERY hot, so word of warning. Lovely and relaxing to watch. My son does leave it on at night as a night light.
I’d feel uncomfortable giving a 5* review to a product whose very design relies on terrible energy-rated bulbs. Otherwise perfect :p
Bought this for use as a night lamp and it’s great with bubbles going up and down. It’s just a little too bright and would do with a dimmer hence one star off the mark.
Does not contain real magma
I don’t really know why they are allowed to call these lava lamps because as far as I can tell they don’t actually contain any real lava from a real volcano. They contain two immiscible fluids with a lightbulb which causes convection which in turn causes one fluid to flow around the other.
One of the fluids is actually a solid which is very confusing.
But it’s nice to sit and watch the thing flow organically. It’s almost as though it is alive.
i have the blue and clear lava lamp, becomes more of a purple when wax is heated up (neon like it says in the title) very nice buy.
i wouldn’t recommend having it turned on due to the amount of energy it can use over time. i think the product provider themselves recommend 6-8 hours so don’t leave it on overnight!! definitely recommend though, great value for your money.
pretty good actually. i saw lots of mixed reviews on this but actually you’re getting an alright lava lamp for like 12. if you want a top of the range one with no flaws then put your hands in your pocket and spend more money. not the cheapest on the market. bought it for my kids room. you have to have it on for about an hour and half or so to get it working properly. but thats always been the way with lava lamps. probably more like 2-3 hours for it to be looking really great.
I am delighted with it and hope it gives good service for years to come! Recommended
But they do seem to take quite a while to work. Now this is purely down to more energy efficient bulbs that are now used. Back in the day when I had one of these first time around, bulbs were much less efficient, this means they gave off a lot of heat rather than all light. Nowadays bulbs are efficient so they do not produce much heat, all the energy goes in to light. Now the paradox here is that these kind of lamps need heat to melt the blobs and make them move, therefore they really need old school inefficient bulbs which you cant easily buy.
Now that aside, if you’re prepared for them to take quite a long while to warm up before you see any movement then I think this is really good value compared to the Mathmos version. If you need it to work when you press the switch then this will really disappoint.

Having had an original MATHMOS “Blob Lamp” in the seventies, I was after a newer version for a retro 70’s project I am currently building.
Having read some of the scathing reviews for this product I was a little reluctant to buy this Lava Lamp, however after un packing,scrutinising, and eventually switching on I was delighted.
Switched at 01.00. pm and in 90 minutes first activity, and after 2 hours working perfectly, left working for 5 hours and switched off.
Next day on at 08.00. am, switched on and working perfectly after 90 mins.
I don’t see how this product will deteriorate after a months, unless you run it continuously.
My original MATHMOS lasted 6 years, but I only used it maybe a couple of times a week, and it was operated in a cold bedroom with no central heating ( This was in the 70’s ) I am wondering if the malfunction is due to over use, and not understanding the simple laws of thermal dynamics this lamp works by.
If it is operated in a comfortable warm room, it will take longer to warm up and become active as the internal liquids will already be at the same temperature, and to create a thermal differential could take a long time.
It must be left alone to create this differential, and I am sure it will give years of pleasure.
Once it is operating “Leave it alone” it will get very hot, and if left on all day it will “Boil” the colour out of the internal coloured liquid, only use it for a few hours a day, as it was meant to be used, and enjoy the wonder of Thermal Dynamics.
Very good lava lamp, have been using it for well over a year now and still no problems. Only 4 stars due to it does take a while to get going (you are looking around 45 Minutes +), so you have to plan in advance if you want to see the light show. But other than that it does not get to hot, I would just advise to keep it away from children where it can be knocked.
When I first got this the lava would not move at all. After a picture fell off the wall and knocked the lamp over (I don’t recommend this) the lamp works a treat, but it leads me to conclude there may be something inherently unstable about the heating coil in this lamp. No matter, as it has worked fine ever since! Not sure how easy it will be to replace the light bulb, which does not look standard to me, but so far so good, I am happy.
I brought this because I decided I needed a relaxing light in my room. I went with the smaller 14.5″ one because it went perfectly with the desk. It provides a great work environment and is amazingly soothing for it.
That said, there are some downsides. The wax, if shaken slightly, breaks into tiny pieces and does not settle until everything has cooled down. Also, it heats up quite quickly and after around 6-8 hours it should really be turned off.
Overall I gave it a 4/5, even with those minor problems.
