Ordered and arrived very quickly
I used it to cut down some branches and it went through them like butter
I then changed the blade and cut through some bolts it doesn’t get much better than that
It’s now in my tool box at work waiting for the next job
Cutting 20cm tree branches with ease!
Just buy big saw blades and this become serious game changer.
What would have taken me days with good manual saw, took me just 30minutes.
Keep in mind that it drain one 5Ah battery in 30-40minutes of work.
So be prepared with spares.
Haven’t tried to cut lot of metal with it, but looks promising as it won’t throw so much sparks like angle grinder.
Makita saw was recommended to us by a builder and even we can’t compare with others, we are very happy with the purchase.
I bought this to cut some nails from pallets and ended up using it for a variety of purposes, including a very neat cut through a worktop. My only negative is how heavy it is, making it difficult to use one handed if you need to support the cut material. What impresses me the most is the speed of the cut; it’s like a hot knife through butter. Overall a superb purchase that will see a lot of use in the future
I used this saw the moment it arrived, I have all Makita tools so just another to add to the collectio
I bought this device to cut through thick hedge branches in my garden that my hedge trimmer just couldn’t handle. It does this with ease – Like a knife through butter. I only wish my 3aH batteries lasted longer but I have a spare so it’s not too much of an issue to swap over and charge the other. If you need to chop through wood then this will make things much easier!
Excellent product works well even though a bit heavy. A good value for money like with most Makita products.
Always use Makita trust this brand over the terrible Chinese ones at last a few months and then Stop working often ending in fire or so are use the Makita genuine batteries yes I have tried the cheap Chinese ones and they’re useless
In the morning I had a load of decking, in the afternoon I had a load of wood. Made the job 100x easier, just cuts through wood quickly and without a hitch.
Bought for someone else who struggled to use a normal saw due to mobility. They are very pleased with it. He’s done the work he was meant to do and is now looking about for other things to hack to bits! Can’t really comment on anything else as I know nothing about the product but he did say it was easy to hold and not too heavy.
Brilliant product!! They’re different to compare prices with other brands as theres so many but when you buy Makita you’ll get your monies worth!!
Greatest tool ever, makes life very easy. Flies through batteries but a solid tool, takes plenty of hardship
This has made my life so much easier. Used mainly to rip out old windows I’ve added it to my collection and it (along with SDS) has resulted in my no longer needing leads and/or a transformer to do my job. light weight and has handled everything I’ve thrown at it, thick timber to metal windows and obviously shreds through plastic. It does it batteries though, and you can notice the difference in performance between 3ah and 5ah batteries. I would of preferred a Dewalt recip, but work use akita so I needed something that worked with their batteries, not my own collection at home. Recommended if you have the 4ah+ batteries.
Brought this one to replace my old and tired one, works perfectly, does exactly what I want it to do, it’s Makita so you also get a 3 year warranty once registered, what more do you want for this price
This has had many hours of use – mostly in the garden tackling trees and larger bamboo, but also cutting through old heating pipes in our renovation project house. If you let the saw do the work it is easy to use, just remember to stay close to the object you’re cutting. The only let down were the blades which weren’t as durable as the DeWalt blades I bought as replacements. The machine itself is great. It goes through batteries fairly quickly but that’s because it’s working hard for you!

This is a great piece of kit. I’ve used it in a house renovation and around the garden. It really is useful in pruning bigger branches.
You will need a few batteries as this machine does go through them if it’s in constant use. Go for the 6.0ah or 5.0ah.
Where have you been all my life!!
A neighbour who is a handyman/builder suggested that battery Makita was the way to go so I delved into my first decent brand power tool and this thing is awesome. Have so far used it for pruning trees, cutting logs, nails on a fence.
Recommend buying a makita brand battery as I got a copy on the well known auction site which is ok but not as good and get some longer blades
Great on catalytic converters. Best to buy with a 3 tone jack
Not quite as smooth as the mains powered but much more usefull
Love this product, well built and cuts through decking in a few seconds
Great tool only downside is it goes through batteries quickly so you need more than one.
Ten minutes after delivery I’d cut down every tree in my garden. Wife was furious but I love the saw
Excellent bit of kit
Great for taking up tongue and groove floor boards
If your reading this its probably because your a tradesman and know your tools as opposed to a DIY’er looking for the cheaper tools. This does the job and will work all day, take abuse and still carry on working. In this game you get what you pay for.
No problems useful tool for removing old wooden frame walls
Used it for chopping up all sorts of old bits of wood etc resulting from a kitchen install.
It’s not the easiest tool to use, you really need to make sure your workpieces are flat and secure as you MUST use two hands on this beast of a saw.
It is not an accurate tool, this is for chopping up and freeing stuff.
Blade change very easy.
Great saw cuts everything, tree branches, wood, stainless steel pipe, Great.
I only needed a reciprocating saw for occassional use and was going to buy one at 59. I’m glad I didn’t as several reviews saidthey were not that robust. This saw is not light weight but it has plenty of power and quick change blades. Really pleased with it. I purchased this Makita brand because I already had batteries for another tool, I generally buy Dewalt but this brand is growing on me.

No dislikes good bit of kit but you pay for what get used in construction of heavy wood buildings
The variable speed controlled by the trigger is a big bonus. I have a mains powered saw that was either on full speed or off. It’s a pity that the buggers at Amazon won’t sell a battery to N. Ireland. Plenty of other suppliers in Britain do. I had to buy the battery elsewhere, but I’d much rather buy everything from the one place.
Seems pretty heavy duty. Haven’t had the chance to use it yet but will up date when I have
Does the Job and then some more. Great price for an essential piece of kit.
Using nearly everyday since I bought it, great bit of ki
Great saw. Buy extra blades at purchase easy to use
This version is the brushed variety, so brushes will eventually need replacing. This has the benefit however as slightly more efficient (battery life) and reduced vibration.
Not tried yet, but had one before. The delivery was brilliant and came as expected. Great weight and good condition of arrival. Got two blades and the handbook also. Very happy and would reccomend.
Went to cordless with this so no more cables and cheap too
Amazing piece of kit, cut through scaffolding poles like a hot knife through butter.
Yer good bit of kit does seem to use battery life a bit quick
One of the best buys i have made. Cuts through a scaffold tube in no time
Quite heavy but powerful. Battery life using a 5ah is pretty good. Vibration is a bit harsh & can make following your marker line difficult to see but it cuts very quickly through sleepers in about 1 to1.5 mins. Overall I’m pretty pleased with it. Saves time & effort from using a hand saw. I also bought the 10.8v version which is great for getting in the small spaces the 18v can’t. Would suggest buying the better quality saw blades for the 300mms lengths as the cheaper ones have a tendency to ‘whip’ & go off line at the far end of the blade
Despite it being reassuringly sturdy, it is well balanced which offers ease of use. It simply requires guiding by the plate and is quite effortless. I used it to remove a 9 inch stump in my garden which took about 2 minutes. Very powerful. Quiet operatio
Excellent quality item, with good weight, not too heavy so it can be used for extended periods, but not light and flimsy either.
Used it to cut down conifers, went through 16 with a diameter of 20-25cms with ease. I would recommend decent batteries, i was using the 18v 4.0 lithium ion ones, each battery lasted about 30 minutes of constant use. Grip section does get warm where the motor is after a while, but only takes 10-15 minutes to cool down.
Ah makita, they keep producing great products at a good price (well on amazon anyway) I’m a carpenter and this tool is a valuable part of my every day tools
We had over 40 roof trusses to cut out as in the pic following the build of a big dormer along with a load more cuts. Bought a set of long blades and this thing flew through them with ease.
Can’t fault it; it has so much power it is now called ‘The BEAST’!!!
A great saw with loads of practical uses. From diy jobs to cutting small logs for the wood burner, and gardening. Needed to cut back loads of branches and hedges and it did the job. Not too much vibration eithe
Nice tool from Makita, only used it once so far to cut down a small fern tree.. did the job
I’ve been waiting a while to make the reciprocating saw purchase, in this context the price plus prime swing it for me! It was greatly discounted and added to my makita set will no doubt find use trimming trees a d clearing some edges that are well overdue a pruning! The item feels sturdy and well made, the Makita name will always influence my tool purchases, forgetting the rest and saddle up with the best! I just wanna chop something…..
I thought about buying one for years. I am a joiner and these just come in so handy now I have it I have found so many uses that I had not imagined. It one of my best investments tools wise.
If you have the right blades, will eat through wood and metal in seconds. I should have got one sooner.
Great saw thank you Makita. another great cordless tool to add to my collection.
Powerful and makes the job easy to perform in tight spaces, good value for money
Bare unit working fine, tested with a spare battery, quick change blades a must.
Large heavy duty saw.
Another quality tool from Makita at a great discount price. Easily cut through a 150 mm tree, and has also cut through rusted steel bolts etc. Quite heavy, but nice feel, quick and easy blade change with power locked off (although also advisable to remove battery first). Smooth and controlled operation.
Early days yet. But from handling it on day one I could tell it was going to do well. I struggled for about 10 seconds trying to get the release clip to move so I could put the blade in only to realise it’s already primed to take the blade and locks over when you push the bayonet end home. When you realise just remember to click it into locked open and putting another blade in is a doddle. I cut up a hard wood chair as a test with the wood blade provided and i was pleased with how well it operated.
update
. I was given a job of cutting up a fallen limb from a willow tree as it was blocking the carpark. i had 11 batteries to had and i think i got through them almost twice, i still cut up all the branches ranging from 30mm to 100mm with no real struggle, i think push the boat out and had a go at the main branch that was about 450mm across, it took a bit of effort but it did the job, i wouldn’t recommend cutting this size regularly but i just wanted to see what it could do, it will be on hand for what i had planned to use it for, forced door entry when i have to cut a dead lock ou
deceided on the battery version as id be wanting to use this well out of range of power sockets and extension leads, i’m well impressed genuinely surprised at the power of the thing especially for a battery version, one note of caution though this hammers the battery so a 5Ah is recommended for any prolonged use and not the cheap ones!! as i found out to my cost…
Superb tool. Powerful and well balanced. Blades are easy to change.
Great product, not surprised as it’s Makita, going to order a 4 amp hour battery as it runs a 3 amp hour battery down quite fas
Been stubborn buying one of these, Iv always stuck to 110v. But glad I finally did
I needed a saw to cut through some mild steel bars when assembling a safety rail. This was perfect! I then switched to a woodworking blade and cut the floor panels. Hard to get straight cuts, but super quick.
Really good product great price
Bought it for my son who loves it for his work.
Nice and handy. No cables makes life easier. Could do with more power but great all the same
Another good trade tool from Makita, good speed control and powerful cutting.
Recently purchased the DJR186Z reciprocating saw with some Saxton Wood Blades (R1021L) and Bosch metal blades (S1122BF) to help with a fence replacement project and in preparing usable wood for the wood burner. The Makita and the blades make a fantastic combination. I have cut through 100mm oak fence posts, large lleylandi branches and a whole bunch of generic wood with ease. The saw is absolutely brilliant, but it will drain a 5Ah battery in about 30 minutes of constant cutting, so make sure you’ve also got high capacity batteries and a rapid charger.
Its far more convenient than a corded reciprocating saw and a lot quieter than a chainsaw for preparing firewood and it doesn’t need all the safety leggings and the like so you can get cutting quicker. The chainsaw is faster to cut though, so I’d probably still use the chainsaw for larger volumes of wood.
Add in a Spear & Jackson Razorsharp Advance Heavy Duty Telescopic Ratchet Anvil Lopper to deal with the medium size branches and you are set up for cutting anything in the garden and garage.
Very good saw , replaces stihl saw in busy places with people, on metal posts or bolts and without the roar of the stihl saw.
Arrived in time for Christmas. Have one very happy fiance
Deliberated on whether to buy the corded or cordless version of this and eventually opted for cordless for ease and speed of use. Glad I did. Paired with an old 3ah battery you wont be cutting all day long but so far I have managed to cut everything from 3/4 inch ply, chipboard and a Christmas tree stump with ease. The supplied blades are fine though a few different ones would add to your armoury nicely. It feels solid enough and the usual high Makita quality is present.
A 5am battery would be a better bet for long sustained use I think but this is ideal for my needs.
If you haven’t got one of these get one they’re brilliant would not be Without one now cut almost anything with the right blades.
his thing is a beast it will cut through anything with the right blade
Very good build quality saw. Not really tested it yet but initial impressions are good!
Really solid bit of kit. Does exactly what it is supposed to. Already had batteries and charger from a drill, headgetrimmer and other Makita gear. Always impressed with Makita. Cannot fault it.
Excellent saw. 3.0 battery will see you through most light weight cutting for a day. Having no cord is excellent. Well balanced don’t notice the battery.
Only concern is safety is on or off. Would like one you have to hold on to be active.
Great item as long as you know how to use it. Does the job well. Very pleased and a good overall service from amazo
I’ve mainly been cutting pallets and have found this tool perfect for the job. Get really long blades 30cm/ 12inchs and even the centre block can be removed easily.
Another amazing Makita tool if you’ve already got the batteries. Mine came with metal and wood blades too. It’s easy to change blades, and it is so easy to operate. I’d say that it helps to have a bit of upper body strength to operate as some might find it a bit heavy, but for the power it’s almost as good as a lightsaber.
I added this Makita Reciprocating Saw to my arsenal of 18V Makita tools as I needed to clear away a fallen tree. It feels quite heavy and substantial but has cut through branches up to 1ft (30cm) across, using a long blade and cutting from different angles. It is very quick to cut smaller pieces. I have not yet used it on anything but wood, but here it is brilliant, even when up a ladder or in a tree itself.
As expected top tool fast delivery but would like a vat receipt for my account which I didn’t receive other than that well pleased
We use in our clearance business probably a lot more than any domestic user would. Is great for us, but is very battery thirsty. Probably the same with all of them though, so if using a lot, just by more batteries.
I am a big fan of Major and have a number of their 18V tools. I was pruning and removing a number of trees for a family member and half way through decided to order this saw and and the Saxton pruning blades. Made light work of finishing the job and I am still kicking myself for the time wasted trimming by hand. I have a number of other upcoming projects where I expect this to be invaluable
wont disappoint – sawed a metal water tank into pieces with this. High end gear.
Great piece of kit. I should have bought one years ago
great tool, no frills or go fast strips- but it gets the job done!
Very good product, no information on performance yet will update in due course.
Had kept putting off buying a reciprocating saw as I wasn’t sure I could justify it. As I already own a number of Makita LXT tools and batteries I eventually decided to take the plunge and, as you do, decided to have a bit of a ‘play’ as soon as it arrived. Scaffolding pole? Plywood? Scaffolding board with nails in it? Aluminium conduit? Every single one of them taken in the saw’s stride. Also bought a pack of Saxton blades but pleasantly surprised to see that the saw came with a wood blade and a multi-purpose demolition blade.
If you ever need to cut stuff up quickly and with the minimum of effort you want to get yourself one of these.
I have had a number of corded 240v plug in saws like this and have never been hugely impressed, however this saw seems more powerful and makes cutting wood extremely easy! cut through a lot of 4 inch fenceposts on angles with ease! Used with a 5 amp battery and lasts a long time!
Bigger and heavier than expected, but very powerful and a 4Ah battery lasts ages.
Fantastic purchase, reasonably priced and quality made…. Makita products are the best tools on the market, for me anyways.
Nice solid piece of kit ,will cut stuff all day long
Fantastic piece of kit to go with my cordless Makita collection. As a joiner/window fitter it’s a must have tool. Great price and quick delivery.
Solid Makita quality. Comes boxed with a couple of blades which I wasn’t expecting from a “naked” tool (some places literally sell tools like this in a clear plastic bag). Good bit of ki
Have quite a few Makita products now, and they’re all good to great, but this one, and especially for the price is amazing. The power of this saw is phenomenal. Married with the Saxton blade, it cut through 5.5 – 6 inch branches with ease. Totally happy and totally recommended.
Arrived on time. So far has done everything I wanted it to do.
Great tool at very good price. Current price in Croatia around 200 GBP.
quite big and heavy but like all makita tools its built solidly and you know it will las
If you’ve already got some Makita gear, then buying bare tools is the cheapest way to expand your collection. I’ve owned several reciprocating saws over the years, and there is no comparison between 240v and battery powered saws – the mains saws wipe the floor with battery powered ones.
HOWEVER – if you are somewhere remote, without mains power, these work ok. The blade locking mechanism takes a little getting used to, but is incredibly simple – effectively when you remove a blade is stays primed ready for another blade to be slipped in – once the blade is pushed in, it locks in to place – you really can change the blade 1 handed.
It’s not a light tool, so you’ll need strong wrists and arms to use it 1 handed – handy for rough cutting of woods and plastics. Also really handy for pruning garden trees.
Sharp blades will given this a fighting chance, I can go through 12″ wood with a mains saw, I wouldn’t want to run this through anything thicker than about 8 inches.
Worth its weight in gold for cutting a galvanised loft tank into pieces to remove it, where an angle grinder was too dangerous to use.
Great bit of kit. As powerful as a mains operated saw with the convenience of being battery powered. If you have Makita 18v lithium kit already, its a no brainer. Great for construction and tree trimming
An excellent addition to my 18v Makita cordless tool collection, I have a corded reciprocating saw, which works very well but I am limited to where I can use it around the garden by the length of an extension cable. This powerful cordless saw solves that problem. I have used it to cut down overgrown plants from a trellis and then the trellis itself, using one of the provided bimetal blades to cut through the nails and wood. I am intending to do some major pruning of small trees and shrubs after the aforementioned trellis project is done. You will need to purchase additional blades (I already had some for my other corded saw) and a Makita compatible 18v battery and charger (I had both from my other Makita tools) but after that off you go. I like the locking button which means you cannot use it inadvertently on your delicate fleshy bits and the no tool blade change, you just push the blades in and they lock and then turn a small button and out they come. It is not a light tool but I find the weight works well when cutting downwards as the tool does all the work. Just be sensible and wear appropriate protective gear and avoid those fleshy bits. A robust, well built tool, recommended if you are already an 18v Makita cordless tool user.
