Reasonable size for better overall compatibilityStanding 165mm tall, the NH-U14S is short enough to fit most modern high-end cases. Measuring 150mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the NH-U14S provides better compatibility with SLI and CrossFire setups as compared to tower coolers that are wider than 150mm or use fans wider than 150mm. | Full RAM compatibility on LGA20xxWith its 52mm slim design tailor-made for LGA20xx (LGA2066 & LGA2011), the NH-U14S will not overhang the RAM slots on this platform, thus ensuring full compatibility with tall memory modules. On some LGA115x and AMD motherboards, the front fan may overhang the first RAM slot, so standard height RAM (up to 32mm) should be chosen when using the first slot. | NF-A15 140mm PWM FanThe NF-A15 is a premium quality quiet 140mm fan with a round frame that complies with Noctua’s AAO standard. Featuring sophisticated aerodynamic design measures such as Flow Acceleration Channels, the NF-A15 further improves the renowned quiet cooling performance of the award-winning NF-P14. | NT-H1 thermal compoundNoctua’s much-acclaimed NT-H1 is a well proven pro-grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease-of-use and outstanding reliability, which makes it suitable for use in professional server and workstation environments. |

best cooler i have ever bought and used so far i dont even no its running half the time. It is huge and its fitted in a small tower case And because of this i found i couldnt put back the side on my pc case as the bolts on the cooler are in the way. This does not stop performance and cooling
Just installed on my i74770K. Took about 10 minutes. Super quiet at just over 550rpm and keeping my machine nice and cool.
Excellent cooler. It fits in my case but the height is nearly touching the side. My only advice is that they should include the AM4 fitting with the cooler. Having said that it was sent for free.
Performance is excellent. One of the absolute best single tower coolers and not too far from the NH D15 in results but much more practical. Noctua make it look simple to fit and use. Highly recommended. Other cooler companies should learn from them.
I had to buy this one because the temp on my 4770K processor jump up to 100 C when I played BF4 multiplayer. After I installed it temp in idle shows 32 C. Now, when I play BF4 on ultra settings, temp goes just to 50 C.
Installation was easy. Just go to YouTube and see video how to install it. For people who complain that Cooler covers first slot for video card, please visit Noctua Website. You will find table with motherboards list. So you will see if you will have a problem to install this cooler on your motherboard. Also if this cooler cover first slot you can turn it by 90 degree if your memory is not too high. The cooler has low RPM speed. If you receive a warning about low processor Fan speed, you can low speed limit to 200 RPM in you BIOS or by using a program in Windows. So you will stop to receive warning about low speed for CPU FAN.
I had to move side FAN outside of side panel. The cooler barely touched first memory chip on motherboard but I didn’t have to move a video card from first slot on my ASUS Z87 Pro motherboard socket LG1150.
The cooler is big, but quiet and provide fantastic results. It has an option to install second fan but with just 50C under full load I don’t think I need it.
I have a i74790k
Without it at full load : 100 C
Whit it at full load : 40 C
Pros :
– Easy install
– Cheap
– Will not spill water on your motherboard
– Fits like a charm in my case
– Silent
Cons :
– None
10/10 would buy again
met all my expectations and more
I saw recommendations online for this cooler and the brand was also recommended to me by a friend. I purchased this for my new build because I could hear the fan go up and down on the stock intel cooler, which has never happened to me before. I decided that was enough and bought this instead. It’s a bit big, so be weary. It might be a little snug in your case.
I’m using a Fractal Designs case, so I had some space to get it all in completely without a fuss. If your case has an opening behind the motherboard where it gets mounted, you’re in luck and shoudl be able to install this without taking your motherboard out.
My temperatures stay at around 31C idle. When I’m gaming, I’ll see it get to 36 or 37. I recommend this cooler if you’re still using fans instead of going liquid cooling.
Keeps temps on my FX8320 as low as I want while being whisper silent. Was bigger than I thought though so be careful of your case.
The noctua nhu-14s is one of the best air coolers for its size, it keeps my amd fx-8350 @4.7ghz 67*ish Celsius with it a slight hum. it is also very well built and is one of the easiest coolers to install
Really good product. Love Noctua, always premium quality, packaging and service. This does a brilliant job, and really helps me overclock even further, the difference this makes to the CPU temp is amazing. using phenom x4 ii 965, Overclocked from 3.4GHz to 4.2GHz and running stable with this.
my i7 2600k used to suffer from thermal throttling. I was using some cheepo heatsink I got for 15 . I got this used for around 47, and its been the best purchase I’ve made for my build. I’m currently sitting at 59 deg max on the hottest CPU core running prime 95. If I were to put a normal load ( rendering/ gaming ) temperatures stay at 45 ish. If you barely have any spare change though definitely check out the hyper 212/412s, but for the money this Is worth it. Furthermore, mounting it was so simple it was just slide this, screw that , and then up and running in 5m max.
Did a lot of research prior to picking up this beast. Does a fantastic job. Very quiet.
Easy to install; far more logical and smoother process than the Evo 212 for example.
A little less expensive and lighter than a D15, yet performance is rated closely behind. An excellent trade-off.
Using with a 7700k and quite pleased.
This is a developing project now involving a Fractal Design Refine R5 case, Intel i5-6500 CPU, ASRock Z170 Pro 4 motherboard, 16Gb Corsair Vengance LP4 DDR4 and MSI GeForce GTX770 OC GPU
So despite my silent case noise was becoming an issue – purchasing Noctua case fans to replace the stock Fractal fans made a step difference BUT when I went to install these there was a gurgling from my 3 year old Corsair H55 sealed CPU water cooler.
RMA or upgrade? Given the response from Corsair I chose the latter.
As many have said the fan colour is not the best given most like red or blue but given mine is a closed case not showing off the internals no problem.
Plenty of good instruction for installation – only word here is the spring loaded screws on the radiator as these took a couple of attempts to get the screw engaged.
Case closed and CPU temperatures running much lower, noise significantly lower in fact if the display isn’t on during idle you don;t know the rig is switched on.
Next step a Noctua cooled GPU
Very quiet, keeps my new Ryzen chip very cool (you will need a separate mounting bracket if you are buying this for AM4 socket boards, this is available free from noctua direct).
Yes I am very pleased with item and would recommend.
This Noctua CPU Cooler is tall and bulky (over 16cm tall) , I had to buy a new case to fit it. The Corsair PC Case 200R was compatible & it fitted nicely without touching the side panel. My CPU is now running between 31C when idle and 39C when gaming that latter temp is a serious drop from the previous cooler’s 52C. Installation was easy. The CPU Cooler fan runs on a lower speed than your BIOS may be aware of is ok for a minimum, so I had to disable the minimum CPU speed in the BIOS. Highly recommended.
Incredible CPU Cooler! Almost silent even at high fan speeds. One of the best CPU coolers on the market and beats a lot of AIO water coolers too.
Just buy it, you won’t be disappointed!
Great performance, easy to install, great and complete packaging. Some might wish for more color options. I don’t care as my case does not have a window. If you want performance numbers check professional reviews online. As far I as can tell it is as capable as most say and very quiet.
Btw, if you look at reviews carefully, you will see this cooler basically makes twin tower coolers pointless. It performs very well with quiet fan settings and is much easier to fit.
Really well packaged, easy to install, Fan colour will always be marmite, you like or you don’t. However I have to say this thing is a work of art it really is so well made, well thought out, well engineered. My 4790K hovers at around 33c at idle with a fan speed of around 400rpm, running prime peaks at around 59c fan speed of 1200rpm, and it is soooo quiet, way more quiet than the enermax water cooling it replaced which was fine for a few months then just bugged me buzzing all the time. I know water cooling is better for temps, but honestly I am not moving away from Noctua now wish I had just brought this first. The one thing you need to look out for is that it might overhang the first PCIE slot dependant on your motherboard so just make sure you have enough room, and obviously that your case is wide enough, if it is yes to both of these just buy it.
Very effective cooling. Reduced temp by about 40C from the stock cooler supplied with an iCore 7. Additionally, the possibility of attaching a 2nd ‘pull’ fan means even better cooling if required.
My previous Intel cpu fan was playing up.. temp upto 100 C amd intermittant crashes. After some background reading ordered the U14S with some trepidation. Will it fit? I have to admit that it was a dream to install and fits very well in my Sonata mid tower with an Asus motherboard. Clear and easy to follow instructions. Enough space on either side for memory sticks. You do need access to the back of the MB to fit the brackets and they are very sturdy. PC now very stable with cpu temps rarely above 35 C with the fan running at 600 rpm! I doubt whether anybody would ever need the extra fan that can be fitted. Entirely silent and good quality well made materials. A day later Noctua sent me an e-mail asking if all had gone well and to get in touch if any issues. Very reassuring and a nice touch…. well done Noctua.
Overall a very good cooler. A few comments:
1. It fit very well on my motherboard. Before buying it, I was fearing that there might be a problem with the RAM dimms but fortunately there wasn’t any. The RAM sockets on my Asus Deluxe motherboard are placed just enough away from the CPU socket so that this Noctua fan can sit all the way down and be next to the closest RAM DIMM instead of above it.
2. If my motherboard’s RAM sockets were any closer to the CPU socket the fan of this cooler would be sitting above them. And despite having low profile RAM dimms (Corsair Vengeance) if the fan had been above the RAM it wouldn’t be able to go all the way down and I would be forced to have the fan slightly lifted upwards instead (or install it on the other side of the cooling tower – although this is a suboptimal configuration too).
3. It is a tall cooler but it did fit well in my mid-tower PC case. If you have any of the Fractal Design Define S, R4 or R5 models you will be fine.
4. I would prefer the colour of the fan to be black, instead of poop brown but my PC case is a closed one so I don’t mind it.
5. The build quality is premium and you also get 6 years warranty.
6. The packaging is premium.
7. You get a very good thermal paste.
8. I used to have the Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo (which costs 25) installed in my system before. With the EVO 212 I was able to achieve a good moderate overclock on my Intel i7 CPU. With the same overclock settings, the Noctua managed to reduce the temperature by about 5C on each core. Now, after increasing the clock frequency by 200Mhz and the voltage by 0.07V, I am getting the same temps as I used to get previously with the moderate overclock and Evo 212.
9. At same overclock settings it is quieter than the EVO 212. At same temperatures it is still quieter than the EVO 212.
10. Very easy installation. It didn’t require me to take the motherboard out of the case in order to install it. And the instruction manual was very good too.
11. If in the future you upgrade your motherboard to one the CPU socket of which doesn’t exist at the tie of purchase, you can contact Noctua and they will send you the appropriate bracket. So when I upgrade my PC I will re-install the EVO 212 back to my current system and install this Noctua on the new one (after Noctua sends me the appropriate bracket).
If you are building a new PC and you plan to overclock it then definitely spend 27 more and buy this cooler over the EVO 212 (especially if your case is a non-windowed one and you don’t care about colour aesthetics). Even if you already have an 212 EVO (or something equivalent to it) installed on your system, you can still buy this and install it on your current system now and benefit from it and when you build a new PC you can re-install the EVO 212 back to your current PC and install this Noctua on your new build (as Noctua will send you a new bracket for your future motherboard). Overall I think this cooler for 52 is a great product and the sweet spot between cooling performance, quality, acoustics, ease of installation, size and price.
Excellent piece of kit. Purchased this to replace A SuperQuiet CPU Cooler. The cooler is well designed and robust, high quality is evident. Noctua have really thought of everything with this product. There is extensive information on their website with videos produced both inhouse and by contributers.
The box contains the CPU Cooler, Noctuas’ own thermal paste, an extrension cable and Low Noise Adaptor cables. There are however a couple of things to bear in mind. This is a big piece of kit with a 15″ fan so you do need to check whether this will fit in your case – again there are compatability charts on the Noctua site. Secondly because the cooler is so efficient the blades spin slower than a standard fan. This can generate a ‘cpu fan error’ on restarting the computer. In my case this was NOT a fault. The BIOS was simply expecting the fan to be spinning faster then it actually was. Reducing the lower limit of the CPU fan to 300rpm ( standard is normally 600rpm) resolved the issue.
I have also replaced a couple of case fans with Noctua equivilants. My system now runs 10 degrees cooler and is virtually silent.
Excellent build quality and easy to mount. The fan is quiet, and load temperatures dropped by 10C compared to a Cooler Master Hyper T4 (this is on an i7-7700K).
Due to the size (150mm wide), make sure to check motherboard compatibility on Noctua’s site before purchasing. They have a compatibility guide with just about every motherboard you can think of.
I had a Corsair H100i GTX, but it was ridiculously loud when I needed to do anything more complex than web browsing on the i7 4790k; one of the normal activities for me was (and is) video rendering, a CPU-intensive process. Even with the cooler on ‘jet plane’ mode, it was still touching the upper 90’s, and this was after turning turbo mode off. I know all-in-one solutions are less ideal than a custom setup, but, as my PC is my workstation as much as my entertainment, and I rarely have the kind of money available to deal with a catastrophic leak, it was the solution I thought I was looking for. I am actually pleased to say that I was wrong to be lulled in by AIO water cooling and, in 18 months of using the H100i, only achieved ‘reasonable’ temperatures on rare occasions.
Thus, having reapplied thermal paste (more than once} and doing all of the usual checks, I decided I would try the pinnacle of air cooling, Noctua. Due to the RAM I have, the D15 was not possible, but I am far from disappointed with this model. At full speed, it is barely audible and the CPU now idles in the low 30’s, hitting mid-50’s rendering video. Despite the aesthetics being not to everyone’s tastes, I am converted and am proud to be a Noctua advocate. Do yourself a favour and try it for yourself; I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
Very well packaged, and all the tools needed to do the job.
I have the i7 4970K running at 4.4 and it runs in the 35-40c range. Very quiet and just about fits into the standard case.
Very well engineered. It’s the Rolls-Royce of coolers. Very well recommend.
Prior to this I had been using water cooling on my previous systems. I bought this to put on a i7 7700k processor.
It took me a while to choose a cooler and this one I picked with confidence; it offered the quieter fan and good cooling
so far I have loved what it has given. It sounds quieter that my old water cooler and temps have been around 30-40 degrees; although I don’t overclock.. Even at full load its going only to around 60..
Fantastic cooler and quiet also
Currently keeps my Intel i7 7700k clocked at 5Ghz at a cool ~27c idle and max of 80c under heavy stress testing. Mounting it was very easy. 6 year warranty :D. Loses a star for the fan colour and because of its height clearance in a case. Ram clearance seems fine with low profile ram for sure. Basically better performance than most liquid coolers at a lower price and less noise.
I had a Zalman cooler which was so inefficient on my FX-8350 that I had to give up rendering videos or transcoding as the PC would shut down after reaching its thermal limit. Plus the noise was like a jet engine. Decided to go with the Noctua after reading several reviews and studying the benchmarks. Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, it’s big. But boy does it do what it’s supposed to. The PC was almost silent when I powered it up and, under 100% load on all 8 cores, the CPU never goes above 45C. It’s like magic – incredible.
The only slight issue was that I had to remove the heat spreader from one module of my Corsair Vengeance RAM so it would fit in the socket nearest the cooler. Ten minutes with a hair dryer did the trick.
Oh, and it’s about 5mm too tall for my case which means I’ll have to buy another one. Ah well, at least I’ve solved my CPU cooling problems – the case can wait for another day.
Build quality and packaging are first rate; the whole thing feels solid and well-made. Plus you get a 6 year warranty – which is pretty rare these days and a testament to the quality.
Highly recommended.
bought this on the strengths of other reviews – it’s great.
Clearly well crafted item, used to cool an i7 5820k hex core chip. It’s working well keeping the core temps between 30-35 degrees idle and 60-65 degrees under full load.
Easy to install in a Define R5 case, but would recommend double checking the case dimensions as it’s a pretty tall unit.
Attaching it to the CPU was smooth and never felt like it was about to damage anything, clever and effective design.
Only niggle, not sure about the fan colour – they really should change that. It would team well in a retro BBC micro build !
i love it silent good colling perfect fit in my med atx case corsair 230
With the extremely loud and obviously stressed CPU stock cooler my Amd fx 8320 was running very hot under load – 64 and sometimes as high as 74 degrees. I looked at water cooling options, but after reading several reviews this cooler was within a couple of degrees of water cooling systems twice the price, I decided to give it a go. I was nervous that this wouldn’t fit into my case but it managed to squeeze in there with a paper width between top of the heat sink pipes and the side window.
The design and quality of the build of the heat sink and the fan is a joy to behold. Installation was a breeze aided by the super video on the Noctua website, everything needed is included – like thermal paste, a handy long screwdriver and even a low noise adapter. The only tricky bit was putting the top clip of the fan on as their was only a small gap at the top of the case, but angling the fan away from the heat sink helped locate the top clip first. With plenty of room the other clip was no problem.
The result was astounding, first off the noise has been reduced by two-thirds – and that is under load without the low noise adapter. Secondly the CPU under extreme loads never gets higher than 46 degrees now. I really couldn’t be happier.
A truly great product that I would recommend to all.
Using this on an Intel 6800K hexacore overclocked at 4.0GHz at 1.28V. Idles at 32 and loads around the 50s. Fantastic, quiet cooler. There is absolutely no need for water cooling if you have this.
I have built many PCs using the Cooler Master 212 Evo and other models of their CPU Cooler. If you have every installed one you know it is very difficult and attaching the Cooler to the motherboard is a huge pain. I’m always afraid I’m going to damage the CPU and the Cooler still wobbles a little after installation.
This Cooler is amazingly well built (like all Noctura products), it is narrow so the fan(s) do not hang over the ram slots, and it is dead quiet. The method it attaches to the motherboard is very secure, and is very, very easy to do. Also the Cooler does not wobble once attached and screwed down. I’ll never use or recommend any other air CPU Cooler than this one.
It includes wires and rubber grommets for a second fan so you can have push-pull. I may do that but so far my CPU is running amazingly cool, and as I mentioned it is dead silent.
LOVE this product.
So far so good. Delivery was even faster than expected and the cooler seems to be working as advertised during regular use. Nice and quiet too. Will probably stress test it late
his is most definitely the quietest build i have ever heard. my i5 6600k is slightly over clocked and my rig is cool as a cucumber.
This cooler is incredible. Stuck to a i5 6600k and overclocked to 4.7Ghz (stock 3.5Ghz), temps did not go over 60C when running Cinebench after clocking. Currently at idle sitting at 27C.
Was considering the Noctua NH-D15 but I dont feel that it would have done an extra 20 value of cooling. If you had an i7 6700k and were planning on clocking to the 5Ghz mark then it would be a good choice but 4.7 is as far as I want to push it and its doing a perfect job.
Good internal air management is going to make a big difference to this cooler but I would recommend in a heartbeat. Incredible performance vs my old single fan liquid cooler. Just buy it.
Did not get to actually use this fan. Let me emphasize a few points from having at least taken it out of the box in the process of
“about to use it”.
– It feels very well made.
– Very nice design in air-flow across cooling veins as well as enough pipes with good diameter to help pull heat from the processor.
– Nice distance from CPU convection point of heat transfer as compared to the fan and heat-sink location above it.
– Very large fan, spins very easily and can move a lot of air. Just gave it a flick with my finger and felt it moving air well.
So why not 5 stars and why didn’t I keep it?
– Close to fit but ended up like 4mm too large to get my case closed. We liked the unit so much we almost cut a hole in the case just to keep the cooling unit. Because of this, I can not speak honestly to its actual performance and therefore don’t want to mislead anyone.
Be care full, very big, doesn’t fit in all midtower case. / Attention, trs gros, ne s’installe pas dans tous les boitier midtower.
Poor documentation. Luckily I found a youtoube video. However, a very good product otherwise.
I also go Noctua because they are simply the best. Not the fan is very very large!!!!
I’m using two of these on a dual LGA 2011 motherboard with 115W CPUs. Each of them at max load (short FFTs) is kept below 59C without the L.N.A. Even with the L.N.A. the one with fresh air is still below 57C and the one eating the exhaust of the first peaks at 62C. The max temps for these CPUs is 90C. Standard max loads are 3C lower on each of those load temps I described.
They idle at 36-37C in a 27C room.
Excellent cooling. I’m currently running the front one with the L.N.A. and the rear one without it and they remain within 3C of each other.
Also: God bless it’s so easy to mount these to LGA 2011 sockets.
Update: I eventually upgraded to two higher power Xeons that were 130W a piece, and also traded out thermal paste for graphite thermal pads. Idle temps sub 30C in a warm room, max load temps never exceed 60C.
Update2: I intend to upgrade to a Ryzen 3900X and submitted for an AM4 mounting kit, but requested two so that I could donate my now-spare second one to another buddy with a Ryzen system. They went ahead and shipped me two AM4 mounting kits. Excellent customer service and superior product.
I love it.
Back in 2012 when I built my PC, I used the stock cooler and made minimal upgrades, adding a few hard drives. Over the years my PC has slowly became warmer and thus the noise emanating from my PC increased as well, becoming a constant source of mild annoyance. After swapping out the stock cooler for the Noctua, the tower is dead silent and I am completely satisfied with my purchase.
My build incase it helps someone make a purchase:
Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case
Intel Core i5-3450 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor
ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
The heatsink/fan is slim enough that it doesn’t interfere with the RAM modules. It is virtually silent. Temps are hovering at mid-30 degrees C. I’d recommend this product for someone who wants to maintain a silent PC as well as keeping temperatures cool even if they are not looking to overclock.
Cheers!
Overview:
This is a fantastic cooler that keeps your CPU surprisingly cool (better than many AIO water coolers). Using Noctua’s proprietary fan technology it runs quieter and more efficient than any other fan out there. My CPU is holding at a steady 32C with 6 cores and 12 threads @ 3.6Ghz. I would highly recommend this cooler over any other air or AIO liquid cooler on the market as of the time of this review.
The Pros:
Quiet operation even at high loads
Amazing thermal dissipation even at high loads and artificial testing.
Fits ATX and above cases along with some Micro ATX cases for a form factor build like the SG-10 (I highly recommend it http://amzn.to/2bHvipL)
Comes with ample amount of very high quality thermal paste
The Cons:
Can obstruct the first PCI slot but this can be resolved by rotating the mounting.
In Conclusion:
This is an amazing CPU cooler and I would highly recommend it. It comes with a Noctua NFF-12 fan (I only recommend Noctua fans because of their performance). It outperforms even the top AIO liquid coolers and is perfect for content creators and gamers.
Talk about big and hefty, this heatsink made my eyes boggle. When I saw the size of the box I nearly had a heart attack.
Fitting was as simple as you could imagine, the torque points to hold the heatsing to the CPU worked flawlessley.
I’m running an insane overclock and temperatures are below the temperature the stock cooler had the cpu at on idle!
If you don’t want watercooling then this is the beast for you.
Previously I have been using a stock intel cooler, so this purchase has greatly improved my temperatures
This is a big guy but also very quiet coming from Noctua. The installation bracket (Intel) was a breeze and quite simply the easiest cooler to put on. The instructions were a tiny bit confusing since they don’t provide much text to explain what needs to be done, it’s all diagrams and arrows. Otherwise I can’t fault this unit.
I fitted this inside of a Define R5 case.
What can I say? This air cooler has wonderful RAM clearance, low noise and huge cooling. Noctua is a spectacular cooling company and this air cooler absolutely destroys the H75 liquid cooler it replaced. My temps using P95 on the H75 would be @ 85C within 2 minutes of testing. On the Noctua NH-U14S, my temps never go above 65C even after 20 minutes of testing. Better still, there’s no equilibrium effect that plagues CPU water coolers. The H75 would perform better when first booted, then after an hour of running would start struggling to keep temps down efficiently. This is because CPUs put off more constant heat than GPUs and this causes the water to heat up after time. This in turn makes cooling much less efficient.
H75 after 1 hour running: Idle – 35C Load – 85C
NH-U14S after 1 hour running: Idle – 29C Load – 65C
Additional notes: Make sure if you run in pull-only config that you use the included thick standoffs. Double check your case clearance, the fan sits higher than the fins and this may cause space issues in your case.
I wholeheartedly recommend this cooler. This is the best CPU cooler I have ever used and probably will ever use until I finally decide to build a full custom loop.
This is an extreme performance air cooler! I’m very much against water cooling because of the risk of risk of leaks, because radiators are difficult to clean and because fans need to be powerful and noisy. Custom loops are also very expensive and maintenance takes a lot of time.
I’m also against dual tower designs because they are too heavy and might damage the motherboard and/or CPU. Dual fan radiators are not allways better than this radiator.
This cooler keeps my very hot AMD FX-9370 (8x 4.7GHZ) at between 1 and 60 degrees C with the original fan. If more performance is need one can add two high pressure & speedy fans (which are usually noisy). I have a big case which is well ventilated. Room temperature is between 21 and 27 degrees C.
The included fan is not the most silent possible but the included adapter makes it very quiet (and less efficient of course). I’m not using this silencer.
The fan is also a tiny bit bigger than a 140 mm square frame fan.
The retention system is very well designed, almost perfect.
In conclusion considering price, quality, noise, performance, ease of installation, weight, durability, customer support: best CPU cooler EVER!
Possible improvements:
– for even better performance I wish it was slightly bigger because my case would accept a taller wider and longer heatsink;
– direct contact heat pipes or mirror finish for the contact surface might improve performance a tiny bit more
– wire holders for fans are much better than any other system I used before but still could still be improved
The cooler comes extremely well packaged with clear instructions and everything you need. It is easy to install with a very well designed mounting bracket. The fan is very quiet in operation and even during heavy gaming sessions the fan RPM on my system stays low.
I would recommend checking the compatibility section on the Noctua website before buying as due to the size it will not fit on all boards. I had no problems installing it on my Asus Z170 deluxe.
It is my first experience of buying a Noctua product and will certainly buy more in the future.
I had tried water cooling with the Swiftech H240 X2 and after two failures (a defective PWM Splitter, and a seized water pump) I decided to go back to the more reliable air cooling solution. After some research, this model struck me as a rock solid investment. I have an X99 Asus Deluxe mainboard with the I7 5930 CPU. The unit arrived on time and installed without a hitch. It really rivals the temps I was getting the water cooling kit! And it is QUIET as heck! My idle temps are around 28 for all 6 cores and at around 20% cpu load, temps never got to 40C.
The quality has got to be best in class. I cannot say enough as to the quality – from the way they box this unit to all parts. This is truly a quality build. There are no compatibility issues for the 2011 as to room for some RAM heat sinks. It comes with the extra hardware to add another fan for a push pull configuration. The footprint is small and fits my mid size cube like case without any issues.
It cost a bit more than others out there but few can compare to this jewel. Highly recommended.
it cools my cpu without much noise but it doesn’t come with a sock like the title states
Noctua make the best air coolers. Extremely quiet and has no problem coping with my with overclocked i7. One of the best alternatives to water cooling. Pity about their colour schemes.
Great service, super premium product. Performs very well and very easy to install. Make sure you check it fits inside your case!
What can I say about this beast that hasn’t already been said?
Its a fan-bloody-tastic cooler. Its very quiet while still retaining excellent thermal dissapation.
I cant find any fault with the cooler although it requires the space to fit. Had no problem covering any sockets however it is very close to my right hand side dimms and I purchased low profile memory to increase the clearance.
Remarkably easy to install (so much easier than terrible stock coolers), next to silent operation and beautifully made. What’s not to like? Happily cooling an i7 5820k with a mild overclock. Only downside could be the height, but it fits great in my fractal r5 case.
his is exelent, i would pay double the price and still feel i have a bargin.
It is very good to see this best cooler with my latest pc build with asus hero alpha, corsair spec 03 orange, corsair 650w vs series psu, 6700k, 32gb ram, sandisk 960gb ssd. But careful if you use full height ram with heatsink as i used. It will not suitable for it and not possible to fit because of two middle heat pipes touches on the first ram. if you try harder it will damage ram and motherboard. I have to band those two pipes with hammer to fit into. Plus it is big cooler so it will cover first three ram slots. Cooler is very silent. Overall good purchase. Cpu temperature stays between 22c to 27c.
Pro: very quite cooler
Cons: not suitable for full height ram with heatsink
I have reduced one star because of this otherwise very good cooler. Tried vertical and horizontal both way but this is the only way to fit otherwise it touches on my pc case (corsair spec 03). Unfortunately it covers 3 ram slots as pictured.
Good temperatures, not as good as some of the twin tower Noctua coolers or some liquid coolers, but it is very quiet and it cools more than well enough for any processor at stock speeds and mild OCs. Definitely worth purchasing if you want a single tower Noctua cooler. Just make sure it fits your case, it is a little tall.
Fantastic fan. Used on a 4Ghz i7 6700K and can hear nothing with case side closed at all. Very efficient even with the LNA fitted on high load, over clocked, CPU temperature stays at around 52 deg C.
Build quality high, comes with wide range of socket fittings, even includes enough high quality HTC for three fittings.
The inclusion of a high quality embossed enamel Noctua badge is a little excessive, even maybe pretentious, but there is no denying the value of the heat sink and fan.
Not the cheapest of heat sinks but less than a water cooling system and quieter and just as efficient as far as I can tell.
Bought air cooler instead of AIO water cooler because of safeness and no BUZZ from AIO. IT does it job very well,I’m not a OC
So far my experience has been positive! The cooler arrived safe a day before it was due. The purchasing experience was excellent. I received the usual emails from Amazon but on top of this several emails about delivery and a receipt from Noctua themselves. I’ve never had an email directly from the manufacturer when I’ve purchased through Amazon before so I was really impressed by this.
The cooler comes with mounting plates and instructions for both AMD and Intel CPUs (Sockets 1156, 1155, 1151 and 2011 for Intel, guessing AM2/AM2+ and AM3/AM3+ for AMD) and is very easy to fit. Yes, it’s large, but it’s actually much easier to install than most of the other CPU coolers I’ve used before. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The inclusion of high quality thermal paste is also excellent – the cooler also comes with all of the required tools, including a long screwdriver, to install it.
I was able to fit all 4 sticks of G.Skill RipJaws-X RAM underneath the fan.
I have attached a few photos so you can see how it looks mounted in my setup.
The cooler is very quiet and so far is keeping my i7 3770 nice and cool. At idle it’s between 25-30C in my NZXT H440 – that’s about as cool as is achievable on air at idle. Rendering a 4K video with the CPU overclocked to 4.2GHz and at 100% load the CPU barely hits 50C. This is a very good cooler for overclocking with! Very impressive!
Would definitely recommend!
Did not buy this on Amazon came on a pre build system its the best fan I have had on a gaming rig.
Easily one of the best coolers money can buy. Full compatibility with huge RAM modules and a great mounting system are icing on the cake.
With my Intel i7-4930k I get maybe 22-28 degrees idle and never over 40 under load. The six year warranty also speaks for itself!
To sum up the review in one word: Exceptional.
The cooling is extremely good and it is utterly silent, having used cheap, poor quality 10 coolers that rattle ever since I started building/using computers, it amazed me at just how silent it was, I use an i5 4690k OC’ed to a very modest 4Ghz currently, even when the CPU is close to maximum usage for 2 hours straight or longer (demanding games/full virus scan) the temperature never went past 55C for one core and 49C for the other three, while the variation in core temps is slightly worrying, it would be a CPU related issue and is thus unrelated to this cooler, however the cooler did a fantastic job and kept the CPU well below the safe maximum operating temp of 72C.
While this is absolutely no fault of Noctua, the reason I chose this model is because its generally smaller than their other coolers but still had very good cooling and a very secure grip on the motherboard, I was hoping this smaller model would not obscure the first RAM slot on my motherboard specifically (Z97P-D3) but sadly it did, if I’d have known this I would have gone with one of the larger, beefier coolers, however that doesn’t mean this cooler is bad, it’s still fantastic and I would still recommend it.
It is worth noting that even if this is one of their smaller models, it is still very large and tall if you’ve only ever used cheap, small coolers, I still use an old Antec 902 mid-tower case and I had to remove the side fan plastic housing as it prevented the case from closing, even with it removed there is less than 1cm clearance between the side panel and the top of the fan, a bit too close for comfort so make sure to check if your case can fit it properly with space to spare.
Forget the word slim in the title – its like saying the Atlantic ocean is one of the smaller oceans. However it does have great RAM clearance and it is so quiet and so efficient. I used my computer for virtual workload so the cpu is worked hard and its does the job brilliantly. I coupled this with their case fans and thermal paste so I am really looking from the whole system perspective but undoubtedly I am happy with this. I don’t think you can bea
Great noctua quality, If you have room for this thing i can’t recommend it enough. Just check measurements as it only just fitted inside my case. Comes with lots of accessories. Will always use Noctua products from now on.
Superb build quality and very quiet. Get what you pay for here.
Second to none cooler but check you case size carefully. This is a very big cooler.
This is a superb CPU cooler, if only it didn’t block one of my PCI-e slots, I would have kept it. I replaced this with the also superb NH-U12S cooler.
Cools 4790K at really low temperatures when idle, at only 300rpm.
All in all, one of the very best CPU coolers you’ll find in this price range. It’s big, check out the dimensions of your board/case before you take the plunge, but it’s extremely quiet. Beautifully engineered and comes supplied with the mounts for both Intel and AMD cpus, together with a very good thermal paste and extra spring clips should you wish to buy a second fan and place it at the opposite end of the heat sink.Oh, by the way, you get a 6 year guarantee from Noctua for this product, that speaks for itself. The fan colour scheme, that’s the hallmark of Noctua, buy this colour scheme and you buy into the excellent products and service of the Austrian company. Superb!
Had a bit of trouble installing the heatsink to the secure mount kit but product keeps CPU cool no problem. Was surprised at quite how large it was but it fits fine in a full tower case!
Really good fan but there are two things you need to be aware:
1. In my ASUS ROG Maximus VI I have Kingston HyperX Beast RAM that I had to move to slots 2 and 4 since I was not able to use them due to a size of Noctua 14.
2. Your BIOS (as mine did) can actually report CPU fan issue and create panic attack. The cure is to lower down the minimum amount of rotation per minute in your BIOS for fan monitoring since this one is “little bit” bigger and needs less spinning. You can set it to 200 or 300 RPMs.
Want an air cooler that’s beefier than the standard CM Hyper 212 EVO but won’t either 1. Break the bank or 2. Take up 90% of your case?
Look no further than the Noctua NH-U14S. While Noctua does make a slightly bigger version of this cooler (NH-D14), this cooler is beefy enough on its own. A huge heatsink (that is quite compatible with both tall RAM and tall GPU’s) with six beefy heatpipes, a shiny finish, and one of Noctua’s excellent fans, come in the box, along with mounting hardware for just about everything. And if your computer doesn’t come in under “everything”, or if you are somehow missing some mounting hardware (as I was), Noctua will send you a replacement, free of charge! The quality of all of the parts is fantastic, and the packaging, while a bit bland, was no-frills and functional.
In terms of performance, it keeps my FX-8350 quite cold, averaging about 11 degrees C at idle, and reaching to about 50-60 under load, and it does it almost silently.
If you weren’t sure about buying a Noctua product, let me tell you that they are absolutely worth it. The customer support is fantastic, the product quality is top notch, and the performance is worth every dollar you paid. Only downside? The color. But hey, my case doesn’t have a window, so what do I care?
My Rig:
FX-8350
Asus M5A97 R 2.0 Motherboard
16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 mhz
EVGA GTX 970
EVGA Supernova GS 650 Watt 80+ Gold PSU
Fractal Design Define R4 (Arctic White)
An amazing cooler…
Pros:
– Very Quiet! Cannot hear it over GPU fan at 20%
– Cool, idling around 28-30 degrees running 3 monitors (2 GPU 1 CPU) Gaming haven’t seen it reach above 55 degrees…
– 100% Fan speed (Highly unlikely it will be used) is noticeable however the fan never sees above 70% as I set it to that speed if the CPU gets to 70 degrees. Therefore making it quiet.
-Build Quality is amazing really sturdy and heafty.
Cons.
-(Debatable) Largish size (Very nitpicking right now)
Nothing Else.
So overall for the price I would recommend this cooler over any Stock Intel fan (Previous CPU cooler I had) as well as recommending it over the Hyper 212.
Using this in a Node 304, a notoriously small and difficult to manage case, the installation was very easy. Dropped 15 degrees (Celsius…) from the stock cooler, which I think is excellent.
Great Cooler. I wasn’t sure whether to go with Water Cooling or Air. The only place I could mount the water cooler was near the top of my cabinet. If it leaked it would run down the front of my motherboard and after paying $450 for my motherboard I didn’t want to take any chances. This cooler is being used on the Intel 5960x CPU and runs at idle 30c without clocking, I am using dual fans and they are only turning 400rpm. The one fan. a Noctua 150mm that comes with the unit probably would have been good enough.
Runs very quiet and the fan uses very little Motherboard power. The only problem is that I installed it on a Asus Rampage V Extreme Motherboard with 64 gigs of ram and you can only install it in one direction (pointing front to back and not top to bottom for cooling). Also all memory has to be installed first, if you use 64gigs the top of a couple of the memory chips are blocked, there is space above them but not enough for installing if you put the cooler on first.
I cannot find a single bad thing to say about this cooler. Not only did it solve every overheating issue I had with the new i7 4790k, it did so quietly and with no issues. The build quality is fantastic, and the packaging is similarly excellent. The mounting kit is about the easiest to work with that I’ve ever encountered, and Noctua supply all the tools necessary to install it, including their own thermal paste. Compared to the bundled stock Intel cooler, my idle temps dropped by 28c and at load temps by 26c. Bear in mind the Intel stock cooler tripped my motherboard safeties so the temps at load with it (97c+) would have continued to rise and permanently damage the CPU and probably surrounding components.
The included fan is their premium version NFA15 with a higher speed than the retail sold standalone one. This makes it ideal for CPU cooling, which it does so with gusto (sorry). This whole assembly is so much quieter than the stock setup I had to double check the fan was spinning in case I hadn’t aligned it correctly.
The NHU14s is cheaper than bottom tier water cooling units, which makes it price to performance wise extremely good value. 100% recommend this to anyone who has a case able to fit it.
Works amazing! Keeps CPU extremely cool. I have a Intel i7 4790Kand even though I heard it runs very hot, I have had no issues with even getting close to overheating. Even on games like battlefield 4, and Grand Theft Auto 5, it doesn’t even get close to getting to warm. It was my first time building a PC, and I found that the fan was a little hard to connect on properly. Also, its VERY big! Make sure you have sufficant space in your case.
+ Very good performance *
+ Excellent workmanship
+ Good work culture
+ Pleasant to the eye look
+ Amount of accessories
+ The length of the manufacturer’s warranty and support
+ Uncomplicated installation of cooling
Fantastic piece of gear. Well worth every penny. Recommended.
However, I do not love it. What a silly way to describe a relationship with a computer part!
This is absolutely beautiful and performs silently, but…
I had a huge problem with one of the screws that hold the heatsink on its base. You see, it only uses two. Since the first install I could screw in one of them easily, but the one on the other side was a burden to do (always the same one).
I’ve since removed and reinstalled the NH-U14S almost ten times and I’m certain that the problematic screw is ruined. I believe it came defectful and because of that, at each and every installation, a new thread was carved into it.
When I said almost ten installs I meant almost ten tries. Because I’ve literally pulled hair out of my head in frustration after carefully applying the thermal paste to then watch the thing jump out of the socket after the second screw failed and then have to clean both the heatsink and processor all over again.
Last time I had to use my body weight down on the screwdriver in order to finish fastening that screw.
I’m sure that if I remove this once more from my current system, I won’t be able to install it again, which is a shame for such an expensive and good performing product.
UPDATE 2014, Dec 29th:
______________________
I’ve contacted Noctua on the issue and they promptly asked me for a description on the parts I needed, which they would ship to me with no charge. Fortunately the screw ensemble is removable from the heatsink and can be easily replaced, so I get to keep my heatsink and fix it myself! Isn’t that awesome? Five stars for Noctua customer support! 🙂
Excellent cooler, bought to replace Corsair H100i water cooler. It’s quieter, cools very nearly as well and it works without any software being needed. I added a second fan and it dropped the temps by a couple of degrees. The colour is a bit of a Marmite thing, but inside the case it’s out of site, unless you have a windowed side panel.
Simply the best air cooler I’ve used. Easy to fit thanks to the long screwdriver supplied, the Noctua thermal paste is about even with Gelid as the best available and very easily applied. The tall heatpipes give excellent clearance over RAM and heatsinks and the fan is simple to clip on to the heatsink. Using the motherboard’s fan controller I had an Intel i7 4790k idling at 34C with the fan running at 330rpm, inaudible over the case fans. The only slight negative is the sheer size makes releasing the graphics card’s PCI-e socket clip a little difficult with large fingers but the blunt end of the screwdriver came in handy here.
Decided to go with air instead of liquid cooling even though I have an i7-4770K overclocked to 4.4Ghz so like all Haswell chips, they run hot anyway. I almost purchased the Noctua NH-D14 but I am glad I didn’t. After researching CPU Coolers during the process of picking out parts for my new build, I found that the NH-U14S had great results in comparison to some larger, twin tower heat sink coolers like the NH-D14 or the Dark Rock 3 Pro. This is a very large heat sink itself and weighs 1.7lbs with the fan which I am as of now, only running one 140mm fan on it. At idle, my CPU is stable @ 30C – 31C on average at it’s stock speed of 3.5Ghz and 35C at 3.9Ghz. This is after installing a Geforce GTX 770 (also at 31C – 32C idle) and I thought clearance might be an issue but it turns out I have about one inch or so which is more than I actually expected. Mounting this CPU Cooler is VERY simple and the brackets used are well designed, it will NOT move.
I will be putting another 140mm fan on but it is not because the CPU is reaching extremely high temperatures even at 100% load when I was testing it using various stress/blend testing software. It reached a high of 65C @ stock 3.5Ghz and 78C +/- 2C when overclocked to a stable 4.4Ghz with a +0.001V offset. My ambient room temperature is around 21C or 70F just to use as a control.
Basically, this CPU Cooler is worth every penny and rivals it’s twice the size big brother NH-D14 and even liquid cooling to a point. I have never liked liquid cooling because even if it is securely hooked up, one mess up and everything is ruined. I looked at the Hyper EVO 212 and am glad I did not purchase it. It simply can not keep up this with cooler at all. Once I put another fan on there (I may go with the redux version from Noctua) I will not be expecting a dramatic decrease in temperature but enough to warrant the purchase and the redux versions have an even higher performance rate.
I would definitely suggest this CPU Cooler to ANYONE who wants to go with air cooling instead of liquid. Even with liquid, don’t expect more than 3C – 5C difference… just not worth the money nor risk to me, sorry. I must also say that the thermal paste which comes with it, the NH-T1 rivals Arctic Silver and IC Diamond. It has zero curing time and very little goes a long way. I used it on my old box and was astonished at a 14C decrease in temperature. However, that was applied to a stock cooler so it was expected to improve but I didn’t realize it would do so by that much.
A couple of things to keep in mind if you do purchase this CPU Cooler… you will probably lose your first PCI slot on your motherboard and it’s height can cause issues with a lot of cases. I have a Fractal R4 so it is a large mid-sized ATX case and I have plenty of room to spare so make sure you have a wide case, take measurements!!. It cleared ALL RAM slots however only by enough to stick a piece of paper between them so even though I don’t use high-profile RAM, you could probably get by with Corsair vengeance RAM but the heat shrouds will stick up far enough to block about an inch of the fan so I would definitely research everything before making a final decision.
Anyway, I took a gamble on a very nice CPU Cooler that has nothing but great reviews and was not disappointed at all. The benchmark temperatures were dead on accurate but it also helps that I have a large case and all my case fans are 140mm Fractal silent series fans.. it is absolutely silent. I hear the GPU fans over anything else and because my case is has silent proofing foam and even with a window, you simply can’t hear it unless you are sitting in dead silence. The CPU fan produces the least noise of all however. Simply put… the Noctua NH-U14S is an awesome cooler and handles my i7-4770K like a champ at stock and overclocked although I do not run it at 4.4Ghz except for certain times.
Watch Dogs was the first game I tested the CPU with and it didn’t get over 47C (I believe that number is correct.) What is correct is that for $60, I would use this cooler on any build as long as the case dimensions allow for it!
I have used liquid cooling before, namely corsair branded components, and this baby keeps up with them while remaining virtually silent. It is a silent beast.
Just browsing the internet, like right now, my CPU temperature is currently at 25C. During gaming, such as playing Bioshock Infinite, the hottest I have been capable of getting the CPU is 46C. Have not tested video encoding yet, which tends to put the CPU under IMMENSE strain, but will try it out when I can get the software working on Windows 8.1.
There is only one downside to this cooler… IT’S HUGE. The images do not do it justice. If you do not have a full sized tower, check your measurements before buying this. My case is a full sized tower built for extra large motherboards, and there is only an inch of clearance in my case for this thing. I also am not sure how much strain this thing is putting on the motherboard. Although it is bolted down quite nicely, I worry about the long terms effects this behemoth will have constantly pulling down with gravity on my motherboard. Only time will tell.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. I still can not believe how quite this thing is, or how well it cools. Definitely recommend IF you can fit it in your case and your board supports it.
It’s magical! Everything that needs to be said about this has already been covered in most reviews. Mounting was the only issue – I had a little trouble keeping opposing screws in to the point where I needed an extra hand to hold one end down while I fastened everything. I probably had poor technique to begin with – but with a little patience I got this piece of art up and running.
I can easily over clock an i5 4670K (3.5GHz stock) to 4.2GHz in an AC room. It hits around 70-80C at 4.2 and if not for stability issues, I can push it past this point. In other words, temperature is not my limiting factor at the moment.
–with respect to external factors–
I’m using an ASUS ROG Hero (VI) board and the ASUS fan controls work well with this fan. I can make it go from silent to turbo jet via the OS. (btw: At full RPM this thing moves ALOT of air – not that you need it too but it makes fun to see how low the temps can go)
The whole configuration sits in a Coolermaster HAF XM – I’m not sure how much the airy nature of the case helps the performance. (I initially had this open air and there wasn’t much of a difference between in the case and out — I’m beginning to believe you don’t need a case that provides a turbulent ferocious air current for good cooling again – just keep cable clutter down and keep it clean)
Overall I’m very happy with this purchase.
Got this in leu of an all in one water cooler system to replace the sub standard puck that came with my 4770k. I have my CPU set on turbo 3.9GHz and with the stock cooler it idled at 42c and in game temps were 55-60c.
I decided that based on reviews this would be a Good investment. I elected to use my own thermal compound (Shin-Etsu) instead of the supplied brand.
Boxing was top notch ant item assembly and instructions were super easy. Installation took 20 minutes due to my having to pull my mb out of the case for the mounting bracket. The mounting system is incredibly secure and near fool proof. Fan clearance with the ram was a little tight but it fit my maximus Viv hero mb with sector 7 ram with a mm to spare.
New idle temps with cooler were well beyond expectations. I went from 42c idle to 23-4c idle and gaming temps plummeted from 55-60c to 30-35c. The best part is it does this with 500 rpm fan speed so its absolutely silent. Even if I turn the rpm up to 1k+ you cannot hear this thing.
The only con I have is that unlike water coolers that drop to low idle temps almost instantly, thus does take a few minutes to return to normal idle temp. Thus is 100% acceptable given its an air cooler vs water.
This cooler is worth every penny.. Buy it. Don’t go for one of those massive 5 pound monsters, thus one will out perform them all day long..
Pros:
Significantly quieter than AMD stock cooler.
Keeps the system about 20 degrees c lower than the stock cooler under load.
Quite easy to install.
Nice, solid quality all around.
Includes everything you need.
I can run my A10-7850k at the full overclocked 4.3ghz speed without the computer threatening to take off like a helicopter…
Cons:
These are very specific, so they may not apply to you.
This thing is huge, much larger than any heat sink I’ve used before. That causes some issues
On the Coolermaster Cosmos S case, it conflicts with the 200mm case fan. I had to remove this fan to make the case fit back on after installing this cooler. It may be a problem on any other case that is the normal height from the motherboard to the opposite end of the case that also has large fans.
On the Asrock A88X Extreme 6+ motherboard, it blocks one of the memory card slots if the fan is installed on that side. This is fine if you’re only using 2 dimms however, just switch to the second pair of slots. If I ever upgrade to 32gigs, I’ll have to reverse the fan and have it blowing hot air across the memory chips, and revise my case cooling system to match the new airflow direction.
As I write this I am not sure if my computer it on, although the noise of my typing annoys me evermore…
I recently got a Fractal Design R4 case in the search for a quieter desktop. My Desktop previously sounded like a jet idling before take off. My set up? Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7, AMD Phenom II X6, GTX 660Ti, x2 4GB Vengeance Corsair RAM with massive heatsinks,. Although the new case helped dampen the sound, the idling jet now simply sounded like a revving ferrari. I narrowed it down to the CPU fan and after much research chose this.
Firstly I should point out that this is a BIG fan. Check on the manufacturer’s page because they give a list of compatibility, mine was fine, and my case had plenty of room. Through amazon arrived perfectly and on time, of course. The packaging was great, and the instructions very clear. Installation was a breeze with the case having an open back panel cut out to allow access – much easier to install that my older and smaller fan. It came with a screwdriver (nice and thoughtful touch), thermal paste, a logo (LOL), AMD and Intel mounting kits, spare stuff for adding a back fan, and a resistance cable to limit the speed to 1200rpm for quieter operation – this suite me fine as I don’t overclock.
The Good:
– Easy peasy installation
– My CPU is running 20 deg C cooler at idling now !!! and 15 deg C at normal use (not tried during gaming etc yet) – is 35 deg C right now as I type
– Looks cool, and fits fine in my case (although I researched that first)
– Lots of thermal paste and good accessories and instructions
– Feels to be fixed quite sturdy
Things to be aware of:
– It is big (not the biggest ever, but still big) – make sure you check compatibility
– Even though my RAM slots are uncovered – it’s cutting it close. I think my high profile RAM would be cutting it VERY close, were they in the slot closest to the fan, as it stands they are not – it has anti-vibration pads so even were the RAM just touching, it should be fine. If I got new RAM though to upgrade to 16GB then I’d probably go for low profile – although I suspect inorder to insert it I’d have to remove the fan (not the heatsink, just the fan, which clips on and off as easily as you can expect something to, bearing in mind it needs to be secure when it’s on)
– My PCI-e 2.0 16x slot is nearest the heatsink, and yes it fits and it’s fine, but it’s VERY close. Not touching, but close enough to worry a paranoid person like me. Furthermore, I can’t actually take the card out when the fan is attached as it blocks the release lever. I worry about air flow and cooling of the card when it’s so close to the heatsink. My lower PCI-e x16 slot is all the way at the bottom which in this case, means just above the power unit and cables, which again isn’t where I would ideally want it. No problem, it’s not the fastest card in the world, so dropping 2 slots to the PCI-e 8x slot gives me plenty of room and space for ventilation, and looks more balanced too. I won’t notice the bottleneck with a x8 slot, but if (when) I ever upgrade I’ll have to have a think about where I want the card if I wanted to use a 16x slot.
– Overall, not anything surprising if you do your research into this first
Ok… the bad:
– I turned this thing on, and it didn’t start! Not for a while anyway, I think the heatsink just did such a good job in the beginning it didn’t need to start? Not sure if that’s a real thing, but anyhow, a minute later it did start
– When it did start, I didn’t notice… I didn’t hear a thing
– Then I put my side case back on and I could hardly tell my PC was on
– Were it not for the LED light on my case and the fact that my screen is on as I type this, I would have to listen really hard to tell if my computer is on or not – some people may find this unsettling
– My keyboard is too loud, typing is now distracting
– My mouse clicks too loudly as well
– Traffic outside seems very distracting and unbearable as I sit to work
– Being able to hear my breathing over the sound of my PC feels fundamentally wrong
On the plus side, should I need to sleep whilst my wife works on the computer, it won’t be the sound from the case / fans that bugs me.
Get this fan if it fits your case and you want to be super-silent and hear assassin’s creep up on you
Don’t get this fan if you are easily annoyed by variations in ambient noises and find the constant drone of idling areoplanes more bearable
NH-U14S
I researched CPU coolers a lot before purchasing reading many reviews and paid particular attention to avoid those that overhang the RAM simms – this one doesn’t – perfect size on an ASUS Z87 Pro motherboard 1150 CPU socket and Kingston KHX16C10B1BK2/16 HyperX Series 16GB 1600MHz DDR3.
I haven’t had it running yet but have just unpacked it and installed it onto my new MOBO with an Intel Core i5 4670K Quad Core. Easy as anything. The four pin fan plug fitted the four pin CPU header on the motherboard.
I should just mention the height – there should be about 5 mm clearance between the top of the fan and the cover of the NXTZ 410 chasis/case – I hope so as I haven’t put it in the case yet.
It is beautifully made – the thermal paste was included (as one would expect) and loads of extras included for two types of CPU socket. Great little instruction leaflet which also guides and advises about fitting another fan – even comes with guidance and fittings for installing a second fan onto the heatsink including the extra retaining clip.
Great purchase and arrived quickly.
would be 5 stars if a little cheaper, but worth the price as it was. quality product that is easy to install and does an excellent job cooling my processor. much quieter than the stock cooler, and allows for overclocking.
Best air-cooler i ever bought 10/10 so quiet its untrue.
Package arrived on time, no problems whatsoever.
I would recommend this item to anyone.
After reading enough reviews from other tech forums for many air coolings Noctua once again earned my trust and honestly is the best choice considering the demands the new series of AMD and Intel processors have.I recommend it 100%
I’m running a 4770k at 4.2 with this now and it barely gets up to 46-48 full load. I’ve had it at normal 3.5 and it would barely hit 40 at full load on games. On the stock cooler, I couldn’t even run it at full speed, I had to keep it at 2.2 just to keep the temps down because it would hop to 90-100 C within seconds. I am running it with dual fans, however.
It was really easy to install, I tried it with the case standing up and it didn’t work, but when I laid the case down, it was very easy. Took me little time to install all of it and have it running.
BEWARE though, that it may interfere with your top PCIE slot. It didn’t interfere with mine since it was only PCIE and I have no cards for that socket. It did get within an inch of my first graphics card, but no big deal. It was kind of hard to manage all the cables in my Phantom case but I made them look decent. The heatsink itself originally made it where I couldn’t plug in the CPU power cable but I found a way to. It is rather large and I almost couldn’t fit my door over it but it worked.
Tl:dr: It is a great heatsink and fan, no matter the price. While it may be expensive, it is fully worth it. I even recommend buying a second fan, but most only need one fan.
A little pricey but worth it, haven’t tried overclocking yet but am sure that it will perform well Re reviews, reason for 4 stars is that it was surprisingly tall (actually have the fan mm’s away from the side of the case because I don’t want it touching the ram).
Wow what a cooler, just purchased it together with the i7 4770k and the asus maximus hero vi and it all slotted together bang on.
As they all say though this is a BIG piece of kit so make sure of space available to you, mine fitted in to my HAF 932 case, which is a very large case, with just mm’s to spare ( height wise ).
But what a gorgeous bit of kit and so easy to fit, and so much quieter than my previous cooler , I think this is down to the larger fan size and running much slower though, so slow infact that I had to alter the bios to accomodate it, as on boot up I was getting a ” slow fan ” error on the cpu fan reading.
The ram i also got was the gskill Ripjaws and they fitted a treat, even using the closest slot.
You clearly get what you pay for.
The whole fan assembly was easy to fit onto my Intel i7 4770K and Asus Z87-PRO motherboard.
The CPU runs very cool at about 28-30 deg. C idling, although it is not overclocked yet.
However here are potential problems with such a large fan cooler:
1) The first memory slot nearest the CPU is just compromised (for tall memory cards with heat spreaders), but this is no problem if you are fitting 16GB as 2 x 8GB memory boards, as one uses the recommended gold coloured slots which are furthest away from the CPU.
2) The cooling assembly compromises the first small PCIe 2.0 x 1_1 slot which is not a problem for me, but comes close to the PCIe 3.0/2.0 x 16_1 slot (the main graphics card slot). I have yet to purchase a high-end graphics card, but usually the main thickness of the card assembly is away from the CPU/cooler assembly, so should be OK.
3) The cooler assembly is quite tall, but just fits in my BitFenix Ghost case OK.
In hindsight, I probably should have gone for the smaller Noctua NH-U12S.
I bought this air cooler to cool my i7-3770K. Here is what I have to say about it,
Pro
* Very well packaged. AMD and Intel mounting bracket are placed in separate boxes. Instruction manual is very through with installation.
* Mounting hardware is very firm. Does not feel cheap.
* Superb cooling performance for its price. This air cooler can easily match its older brother, NH-D14. Out of all the cooler I have used only Swiftech H220 can beat this cooler by 7 Celsius degree.
* Comes with mounting hardware if you want to install a second fan.
* Fan is silent even at full speed. Beside the sound of airflow there is no vibration sound at all.
* Comes with 6 years warranty, longest I have seen.
Con
* This air cooler is very wide. Be advise it can block the first expansion slot (so GPU or long PCIe x1 card needs to be moved). Can be a problem if you are doing SLI/CF or using mATX/Mini ITX board.
* This air cooler is also very tall. Some budget cases are incompatible with this air cooler.
Overall score: 5/5
For its price, this is a top notch air cooler.
Best fan I’ve tested. -8C drop on average coming from H60 [liquid cooler] is pretty good. Has to be one of the best air coolers available.
