Principle of Measurement:

The coating thickness gauge work either on the magnetic induction principle or on the eddy current principle, depending on the type of probe used. This gauge have internal F probe and N probe.

  • F probe work on magnetic induction principle and should be used for non-magnetic coatings such as alu-minium, chrome, copper, zinc, paint and varnish, enamel, rubber etc., on an iron or steel substrate; It is also suitable for alloyed and hardened magnetic steel(however, not suitable for austenic steel).
  • N Probe work on the eddy current principle and should be used for insulating coatings e.g. paint, anodizing, ceramics, etc., on all non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc die casting, brass etc. and on austenitic stainless steels.

Data Store: 4 groups, total 320 measurements, max 80 readings will be stored for each group. If over 80 readings, please delete the group, or it will not store the new measurements.

USB Data Transmission: Connect it to PC, then you can download, analyze and store the measured readings. Software compatible with Windows SVR 2000/2003/2008 and Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10(32&64 Bits)

Easy to Carry: Included a plastic toolbox, users would no longer have to worry about carrying and storage problems. USB cable, software CD and batteries also in the toolbox.

Note: Please make sure that the gauge and the measuring surface keep 90 degrees vertical.

There is some fluctuation in the results and even when calibrating but when you consider that top end thickness gauges go for $700 I can’t complain. I use this to get an overall idea of how thick automotive coatings are before I do paint correction. It fits the bill and I have had no major issues with it.

I use these in auto inspections for paint mills and body filler thickness and I have put it up against higher costing digital mill gauges see readings 1 plus – 1 minus when comparing. Works for me for what I need it for.

Accurate, repeatable results, calibrated right out of the box! Simply put in the included batteries, turn it on and you’re ready to measure. Perfectly “zeroed” from factory, automatically recognizes ferrous and aluminum substrate, and gives readings that are within specs with all test strips.

Originally purchased (and then returned) a different (cheaper) model that was either junk or a dud, and I wasted a good few hours trying to get it calibrated and zeroed to no avail. I figured I’d give this one a try and WOW, nothing to do, everything works as it should right from the get-go! Comes in a nice foam-lined hard case and includes batteries. Very happy with this purchase!

This gauge really helps, my fianc and i do auto detailing, needed this for sure because certain cars are known to have thinner clear coats. The mean helped us to see if a Tesla we have now scheduled is safe for a paint correction without compromising the clear and paint work. There should definitely be a video on how to properly calibrate it though because it was a bit difficult at first.

Its cheap and can be over complicated, readings are all over the place unless its placed perfectly on panel everytime, like that fact you can go from steel to aluminum panels and it does get the job done

Was told that this unit is better and more accurate than others. After calibration it was straight forward. Very well build and easy to use. Very easy to identify repainted body panels thanks to this. This price is insanely cheap, I was told by other workers that this was in the mid-200’s when they purchased theirs.

Bought to check car paint thickness prior to paint correction. In theory: Turn on, calibrate, press to car paintwork and measurement given.

Opening the box – it comes in a great little hard case. Practical to keep it safe. Also came with batteries.

I liked the feature of being able to take multiple measurements and work out an average automatically. Variations over a car panel are normal, so this could remove the need for mental averaging. However, I didn’t find this useful as I thought it would be.

In use, the unit was not as ergonomical as I would have liked with regard to grip. Using it to take measurements of vertical surfaces (doors, wings) and I felt this unit a little sloppy in the hand. That was with clean and dry hands.

These units should be calibrated every day. The sensitive electronic components change performance based on temperature and humidity, so if you need accuracy – calibrate! It comes with a neat set of different calibration sheets and 2 different substrate blanks (aluminium and ferrous/iron).

But this is where I found this unit had a weakness – it’s accuracy was different depending on iron vs ferrous substrates. I could only calibrate it to one substrate accurately at a time. It would not be accurate for both at the same time. Eg if I calibrated the 250um test plaque on the iron blank to 250um+/-2um, this would give +/-12um on the alu blank. Returning it to +/-2 for the Alu, would give +/-11um on the iron blank. A little inconsistent. Typically i wouldn’t be using it to check Alu and steel coatings on the same day, but it will mean changing the calibration substrate blank IF I remembered to!

In the end, I kept another unit I purchased on amazon and it was because the other unit was easier to hold in my hand (made it quicker to do my job) and was more consistent in calibration.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m trying not to gush here, but I have to say that this thing is pretty cool. So far, it just works as advertised, without any drama. Upon trying it the first time, I immediately noticed that the right front fender on my car (that I bought used, but nearly new) has apparently been repainted. The coating thickness on it was nearly triple that on the rest of the car. Otherwise, you would never know. I’ll never shop for another used car without a gadget like this.
The only negative I’ve experienced is that maybe one in 20 measurements is bad (reads way thick). I’m guessing that this is just because I didn’t touch the panel quickly enough, or I had it at an angle, or some such user error. It’s really not a big deal, though. You can take a dozen measurements in seconds, so you know instantly when you get a bad reading. If the thickness is way higher than the last measurement, you instinctively just re-do the measurement.
I just got it, so I can’t say anything about durability yet, but it has a warranty, so I’m not overly concerned about that.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersMy work is pre-purchase vehicle inspections and my specialties are exotic & luxury, collector cars and muscle cars. I use a thickness gauge mainly for twp things. One, are all metal body panels factory original paint. Two, how consistent is a repainted vehicle. This gauge works well for what I use it for. I am far from an expert with these sort of tools but it seems to me it is a good value. I would buy another one.

The Eray gauge seems to work well and is very consistent with its readings. I didn’t even need to set it up ? I just tested it on the samples provided and after a few clicks it was reading the different thicknesses pretty accurately and giving consistent readings always. Tried it on the car and it showed that a panel I new was painted had a thicker layer of paint. It also proved that my boot, roof and bonnet were original and not painted. I will use this tool whenever I go to buy a car so that I can check what I am buying !!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI got it because my son and I were looking for a 69 Camaro that was reasonably priced. Found one that looked great and the seller (who had it painted) said the body was straight underneath. Found places on the car where there was so much filler the meter wouldn’t even get a reading! So for us, it paid for itself in one use! Not sure how the accuracy compares to much more expensive setups, but for someone like my son and I looking at used cars, it’s invaluable!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI haven’t figured it out completely so I can’t speak to it’s accuracy against a standard, but it works really well for checking car paint to make sure each panel has about the same thickness of paint on it when buying used cars.

I bought it while i was looking at buying a used car and it helped a lot. It found a couple of problem spots on a couple of cars and pissed off the salesman…lol

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe pkg arrived in excellent condition and the carrying case fits the device well. The calibration is easy enough but I have experienced inconsistencies in readings in the same spot on a painted steel surface. We will continue to try to resolve this but meantime it’s completely dependant upon averaging at least 6 readings.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have several paint meters and this is my favorite. Will give an average thickness in a grouping of an area or single hits. I use it on Diminished Value inspections with great success. It helps me show the difference between the thickness of the pre-loss panels and the post repaired panels. Looks professional and provides a more accurate reading it appears than even paint meters costing 4-5 times more.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI used to have one of these when I was a used car auction buyer. Back 15 years ago it was a basic a tool in the used car business, as a hammer is to a carpenter.
So it needed a new one and so far I used it on 5 cars and it works great!. Simple, cheap, constructed rather well.
What I like about it, and is important to be, is no resting. Just move about the car checking as many points to evaluate the paint thickness quickly and easily.
It already paid for itself 10 fold helping me negotiate a sweet deal on a used car.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is a fine and affordable paint thickness meter. I recently took an automobile paint polishing class and the training facility uses this meter; it’s easy to calibrate and easy to use. I decided to buy one and am quite happy with it.

I would note that the measurements do have some variability. This is unavoidable at any price outside of a laboratory environment. I found the variability to be within reason. I feel comfortable using this meter to judge, for example, whether or not OEM clear coat remains, or whether or not a panel has been painted over.

    Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usershis is a nice tool that can be used to estimate total paint thickness. of course you dont know what the real measurement really is but you can use it to check before and after buffing to see what you took off. i think its a good tool to have thats relatively inexpensive. hard to say how real or accurate the measurement is but as long as youre using it as an estimate you should be fine. meter does not work on non metal such as a spoiler or wing. overall i am satisfied with the purchase.

I learned from my mistakes and now take extra safe precautions to make sure that never happens again and one of those safeguards is this device. You can’t lose for $130. Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersGert macht was es soll, keine Probleme – das wre es eigentlich schon 😉
