Russell Hobbs RHM2574 Digital Combination Microwave, 25 Litre, Stainless Steel [Energy Class E]

About the RHM2574

Cooking meals for family and friends or reheating large plates of food becomes simple and easy with 900 watts of microwave power and 10 auto cook menus.

The RHM2574 combination microwave has a 31.5cm wide removable glass turntable and a stainless steel interior for easy cleaning. It also has weight and time defrost settings, a child safety lock and a simple, functional control panel; including clock and digital timer.

It comes complete with a grill rack.

Multi-functional Cooking

The combination aspect enables you to combine microwave energy, a grill, and convection heating (fan assisted) so you can heat, roast, crisp and brown.

This makes the microwave ideal for cooking lasagnes, pizzas, baked potatoes and cottage pies.

The true fan assisted oven acts exactly the same as a conventional oven, which gives you the option of an extra cooking facility for large dinner parties and family gatherings.

Avoiding Mishaps

To avoid any microwave mishaps it is recommended to take extra care with the following:

Low moisture foods (eg. cereals, bagels, dried pasta, pulses and chocolate)

– These must be cooked on a low power level for a very short length of time, or preferably not at all.

High sugar content foods (eg. jams, syrups)

– These foods can become easily ‘super-heated’ when cooked in a microwave oven.

Foods containing alcohol

– Foods with an alcohol content must not be cooked in a microwave as they could ignite.

Foods with a membrane or outer skin (eg. fruits, sausages, potatoes)

– Food with a sealed or none porous skin must be pierced to allow pressure and steam to escape

Firstly this combination microwave looks quite smart with it’s stainless steel finish and minimal button set. The effect is slightly spoiled by the red LED display which is a bit bright and cannot be turned off. The oven is quite deep as the back of it gets hot when using the oven funtion so you have to think about where you want to site it.

The controls aren’t intuitive and you do need to read the instruction manual to understand how to work all the functions. The large rotary knob is used to set time, power levels and temperature but using it set a lengthy time requries a few rotations. However the Start button does have a quick cook function for the microwave; you only need to press it once to get 30 seconds of full power, further presses keep adding another 30 seconds of cooking. This is convenient as the microwave is the function we use the most.

The 900W microwave works very well although the cavity steams up quite readily as there seems to be no exhaust fan. Thankfully the stainless steel interior is mostly easy to clean apart from the roof which is a bit awkward as the grill’s protruding heating element is attached there. It does have some auto cook and 2 stage functions as well.

The convection oven is quick to heat up but takes some getting used to in terms of cooking times and temperatures. You can set the temperature between 150C and 240C and set time up to 95 minutes. You do need to use the included trivet to raise the food high to allow the heat to wrap around it. It’s fine for baking cakes, part baked bread and baking convenience foods such as pizza or ready meals but we haven’t used it to roast anything from scratch as it doesn’t brown food as well as a conventional oven. However in these permacrisis times it’s good to have a small oven at hand for those times we don’t need to use our main oven.

We have rarely used the grill function but, again, you do need to have the food raised using the trivet to get it close to the element for efficient cooking.

Finally you can combine microwave cooking with either the convection oven or grill functions to get the best of both worlds although you can’t use the trivet with the microwave.

We purchased this oven for about 100 as a warehouse deal and for that price it is just about worth it in our opinion.

I nearly sent the microwave back as the door switch was so hard that I couldn`t open the microwave. My friend came over and I told him about it. The door it slightly off centre and caused the door to stick. After a bit of persuation the door came open. It still sticks bit, bit I think it will be better with constant use. I have used it a fair amount and pleased with the results.
