Swivel base is a very good feature and product is well made.u
Solid vice. Reliable and just the job. With something like a vice, you’re not looking fo bells and whistles. You want something that’s strong and dependable. This fits the bill.
Bit of play in lead screw but perfectly capable vice
Suitable for light to medium use. (home workshop) Not for heavy duty commercial use.
Very solid decent vice. Only problem is it came with one small screw missing on one of the jaws. The proposed solution was to send it back for replacement (proposed by Stanley!) which is crazy when you consider the screw costs a few pence and we are talking about return shipping of several kilos! Finally ordered screw myself and very happy with this vice.
For a diy/hobbyist use it’s more than efficient. Unless you planning to bang on it with sledgehammer, it should last you a lifetime.
Works well
Becareful to make the base 15mm plus thick birch plywood
Just received this product and I am really happy with it. I would say it will do the job 100% I am looking fo
Suction power is not applicable. The vise works well. It is robust and serves its purpose.
Buen torno, robusto y preciso.
Very happy, great vice for the home or work. Had this for a few months now and very happy with with it.
Fantastic item. Heavy duty and easy to fix to bench. Swivel clamps work well.
Big heavy vice, superb for home use and medium commercial use
A very well made vice, a great addition to any work bench, I. Am very pleased with this vice
It is well made, tightens with the jaws perfectly aligned and has no play. Only slightly negative comment is there isn’t a quick release.
Great quality vice, very sturdy excellent value with fast delivery. Very pleased with my purchase
Not the best quality but for the price seems quite heavy and sturdy and good value for money.
Present for my husband he loved it . very strong And good quality
Outil conforme mes attentes.
Serrage puissant, grande ouverture
Fonctionnement fluide
Mchoires en acier dur
Base tournante avec blocage efficace
Bon rapport qualit-prix
Emballage adapt (carton d’origine + carton extrieur)
Great vice for the money, can’t beat the build quality for that price. I use it to hold my pencil while sharpening it. Of course I don’t, it holds well and swivels like someone in swan lake. Sorry not helping. It’s worth every penny I’ve used it for 18 months and can’t fault it. Buy one you won’t be disappointed.
I purchased this vice to replace one, smaller, that broken during vehicle repair work. It has stood tests so far and has very useful rotating ability.
Its a solid and well made vice. Smooth action, used it many times now and have no complaints
Solid vice. M16 nuts and bolts required to mount. Really like the small anvil on the back for persuading objects with a hammer.
Well made vice they even put an extra place to grip in the jaw of vice. Only thing does not hang out over bench enough
**Update** Dropped 1 star because swivel base turns under high load. I was trying to calibrate a 28-210 Nm torque wrench with the square drive in the vice, and even with both handles fully tightened it spun the base at around only 100 Nm. Had to put torque wrench in the vertical plane instead.
***********************
Solid. The max bolt size you can use to bolt it down is M16. I got 80mm length to give ample opportunity for use in a thicker workbench if needed in the future.
It is a good solid vice that should last, but a few improvements would be:
– M16 bolt heads protrude up just enough to scrape the underside of the vice when you spin it. A touch more clearance would be good.
– Mounting instructions would be helpful for a lot of people, including mentioning the M16 bolt size. I did some research and found the best way to mount it was on the corner of a workbench so that you can rotate vice to be on either edge of the bench. Also, the vice only has 3 bolt holes (not 4 like some of the smaller editions) and you have to be careful if you want to be able to put a vertical upright piece going in the vice because for that you need a small amount of overhang of the base so that the vice face protrudes just beyond the vertical plane of your bench. It is possible though, see pics, but not sure the triple bolt pattern is the best design for this kind of mounting. I’d be happier with 4 bolt holes and a better positioned vice face to minimise overhang.
– It is difficult to get good soft jaws for this vice, I got Draper 14180 ones. This means that as others have pointed out the 2 magnets happen to align exactly with the inset bolt holes in Stanley 6-inch Bench Vice resulting in reduced grip and lack of centre. Since there doesn’t seem to be much of an alternative currently available you will need a fix if you want soft jaws. Here’s one:
Fix:
Buy a small pack of 10mm diameter x 5mm depth neodymium magnets for around 5. These fit perfectly in the inset bolt holes of the Stanley vice jaws. This not only keeps the soft jaws centred on the vice jaws, but also adds a good amount of extra holding force making it just about right – not too weak and not too strong. I got ones advertised as having 3.5kg hold force if touching.
I measured just over 6mm depth of the inset holes so that gives about 1.5mm clearance (soft jaw magnets are also slightly inset) which is perfect as it keeps the magnets from physically touching the soft jaws which would then be too strong for convenient removal and also quickly wear.
Be careful to get the poles of magnets orientated the right way before you put them in the bolt holes of your vice as they will repel the soft jaws and are so strong that once they are in they are hard to get out (unless you have spare magnets, though is possible to with 2 small flathead screwdrivers to wedge out bit by bit).
This thing is an absolute monster ! It looks really well put together and is really heavy. The first thing I did was take it to pieces and grease all moving parts and the long threaded bolt . It was virtually bone dry and very gritty but it’s very smooth to use now.
A good solid piece of kit especially for DIY. Always in use. Like the fact the head can swivel.
A good quality heavy steel vice, haven’t had it long, but its standing up well to some heavy constant work in the workshop… time will tell, so far very pleased, good service too…
Keeping a firm grip on materials with which Iam working. An excellent tool. So far a good investme
A good weight vice for home garage use. At around 50 its great value.
The 90 rotating feature works well on a table corner and the clamp for this is firm enough whilst easy to use.
Some excess movement on thread solved with thick grease. All good now.
Very well made vice with firm grip, which can swivel on its base.
Great vice, I just need to dirty it up a bit! 😀
A well made vice and the swivel base works well
I am very happy with this vice which is a good size without being overpowering in the garage. The swivel function is worth having and the vice is easily turned if required. I bought the ‘Sealey VSJ150 Soft Jaws for Vices – 150mm’ to go with this vice and they fit perfectly. A good price for a decent hobbyist / diy’er vice.
This is a good sturdy vice. Worth paying a bit more for, but still maybe a little over priced. It solid and a good size, I use it for home DIY, so it’s perfect for my needs.
By careful positioning of the three bolting hole, you can grip pieces down clearing the edge of the bench. Good design.
Comparing my 4″ 1 ton with this one – this one is a no braine
A set of M12 bolts, and it is securely fastened to my workbench. I love that it swivels, mostly because I can move it out of the way of the front line of the bench when working on other stuff.
Very pleased, even if I nearly did drop it on my foot.
It’s worth getting this model. Looks and feels durable. I’ve used it a few times already and seems like a good one for DIY work at home.
This vice is large and heavy and seems strong enough to hold an elephant. Great quality and FAR superior to cheaper models available
Great bit of kit, bought as upgrade for shed/workshop. Excellent grip and also first class bench fixings, no wobble.
Simple to install and very strong with a smooth action.
I’m a fire sprinkler fitter I use this for making heads and small works like cutting unistrut and rod. Its good to have onto of the sitebox.
Well made and solid. Nice being able to rotate the top half. Just get some m16 bolts and washers and you’re set.
Good quality vice. Never had the rotating option before and now wonder how I managed before.
After a visit to MM to look at Clarke, I was not impressed with quality. Even the sales assistant advised me not to buy!
I decided to order this instead and it has exceeded expectations. This is a very solid item and I have no doubt it will last for many years.
OK, the machining and tolerances are perhaps not what you’d get from a top of the range item – there is very slight play in the shaft – but for the price I am very pleased.
Purchased to go with new bench and very happy with this vice. Good, heavy and solid, 360 degree rotation. Needs a pair of soft jaws if to be used for woodworking. Easily fitted to bench with three bolts (not supplied). 100% delighted with the purchase and speed of delivery.
Great bit of kit and masivly under estimated the ability to rotate it … has become very handy supprized ive gone without for so long 🙂
Good weight, good grip and action to the jaws I would say this would last a long time unless you try and do silly things with it.
Idea for most DIY car jobs I would imagine.
Very heavy, very sturdy, quite large but perfect for a home workshop. Used three M16 bolts to fix to workbench.
Half decent vice and there’s a lot of rubbish out there these days! Nice and sturdy, does the job well. My one complaint would be that I had something in its grips and the paint from the vice ended up coming off onto the item I was working o
Reasonable quality vice, good value for money.
No real faults but the general fit and finish is china export quality.
All works as expected.
Excellent bit of kit. I’m over the moon with the extra help it provides in the workshop. Worth every penny.
Great quality solid amateur workshop vice.
Just what I was looking for at the reasonable price.
Great value.
Medium-duty bench vice, does what it should. Well priced, check out ebay etc where this, and it’s little brother, are more expensive.
If you want to buy a quality vice then you cannot go wrong with this Stanley vice, I purchased this for my workshop and I have not been disappointed . Fantastic value for money from a recognised name that delivers exceptional quality.
Just make sure you check the dimensions suit, and you have a big, solid workbench for this thing. Nothing less will do it justice.
Looks great exactly as per write up, only time will tell how robust it is, here’s hoping.
An as, lo recomiendo. Este tornillo de banco es caballo ganador.
Sold build! The fact that there are 2 base plate clamps spreads the pressure between them. Recently failed vice had only 1, at the end the clamping screw handle was folded back at right angles, and then the base plate disintegrated. This one has already seen a lot use a lot since it arrived, no problems. Base tightens with finger pressure.. Installation does need some big bolts.
I’ve just received it and set it up.
For the price of approx 30 delivered this appears to be truly excellent value for money.
Perfect hobby/domestic vice. The swivel feature means it can by swung to various angles for simplifying its use and that it can be left out of the way in a limited space shed. The anvil is a useful base for reasonably heavy hammering. Aside from a thread de-latch lever for rapid opening/closing of the jaws, I can’t think of an improvement that could be incorporated but, at this price, that would be a lot to expect.
Arrived promptly and in excellent condition. Unfitted as yet but did a check on it and everything works smoothly. Maximum opening is around 145mm and there are pipe jaws/grippers on the internal faces, with a minimum holding size around 26mm. Appears to be a substantial and well made piece of kit. Not in the same class as the Record/Irwin mechanics vices, but then it’s not costing hundreds of pounds either! It appears that it can be entirely disassembled as well, which is handy if any maintenance is required.
Vice seems well-made and good value for money. I liked the pipe grip and the anvil seems a good size. A quick lever would have been nice but too much to expect at this price
This is a cool bit of kit its heavy its powerful and it does what its meant to do and it bears a good old fashioned English name Stanley but its probably made in China but who cares as long as it performs well.
Very smooth movement.
I imagine it will last the rest of my life, with a little bit of lubrication on the screw mechanism from time to time.
The jaws are incredibly strong, so probably worth buying some “soft jaws” as an extra to avoid marking softer materials that you want to hold in them.
Two minor points.
1) I was used to having vices with quick release mechanisms – this one doesn’t have a quick release for fast / big adjustments
2) the picture shows the base as having 4 bolt holes to fasten to the bench. The vice I have (which is definitely 150 mm / 6 inches) has three bolt holes to fasten it to the bench. These are big bolts. I have used M16 bolts (the type you use for fastening tow hitches onto cars) to secure mine. But there is no specification on the packaging for what diameter bolt you are supposed to use (I think M18 would be too big but maybe there is some specific size of imperial bolt the holes are specifically designed for?).
his is a very sturdy vice and is heavy duty, does the job once bolted down into place using m10 carriage bolts with washers, i highly recommend this product it also has rubber ends at the end of each handle side to prevent annoying sounds when fastening. could have been cheaper but overall it is a great product!
good heavy ,strong bench vice ,does the job very happy Amazon deal that reaches the bench no others can reach
Turned up in less than one day from time of order as described. Works a treat. better than my old vice
