Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersNice, easy to use and surprisingly light. I have used them mostly in the bottom of containers and planters instead of the “broken pots” of which Carol Klein and Monty Don seem to have an inexhaustible supply! Pots with larger drainage holes are a problem as the pebbles are quite small and fall through, but generally these do the job adequately.
I’ve also used a few for decoration. See photo. Also to improve heavy clay soil, prone to “caking” and forming heavy clumps.
How they perform as water retainers is yet to be seen, but they allow drainage while preventing soil loss through drainage holes, and that is what I bought them for!

Multi purpose, easy to use, lightweigh

Really thought those were amazing – smaller bag than I thought but key advantage is that those are so light that it is super easy to put in place. I also believe the water just drains through which is absolutely perfect for us as well.

    Highly recommend as

Second purchase but much bigger bag: using it instead of bark for my large pot plants unlike bark, doesn’t end up all over the garden, fluffy pets don’t get to bring it inside and I don’t have to top it up every year!

I bought one bag, thinking that it would be enough for what I needed but I was wrong, I ended up ordering another bag. I am using these (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007OWN2FW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I am currently using one to grow Watercress Aqua and ended up needing TWO bags. Well impressed with the clay balls and will be buying more when I expand my watercress to the other trays.

2nd purchase. Update: my plants are doing well growing hydroponicallly so have bought more to transfer the others.

First review: Transferred a couple of plants to leca and hydroponic care, they’re not dead yet so all is well. It’s a big bag for a little money, will purchase more soon as I’m pleased with the quality. Make sure you rinse off clay debris prior to use a few times

I got the wrong size of these pebbles, but for filling up a really big pot and therefore not wasting bags and bags of compost, there’s nothing to beat them.

These work alright, I’m severely allergic to peat and the fungus stuff they seem to add to all the potting mix in Scotland… Can’t find actual dirt to save my life here… So this is doing the job along with worm castings. It seems expensive for clay balls, but they’re more elsewhere.

I don’t know how ill be able to use the whole bag as its so big.
Only draw back was the delivery. The box was split as was the bag. It was dreadful and I believe I lost mny pebbles in the transportation process. But this is not a fault of the product.

They are rather dusty when you pull handfuls from the bag, but as I’m using them as a drainage layer I can’t be bothered to wash them, so I just use them as they come. Golden Review Award: 38 From Our Usersi was delighted to both recieve and start using this product. the lightness of the ‘pebbles’ and their relative lack of dust was a thrill to behold. i very nearly forgot about my own inevitable death while using them. my one gripe is that these are really more like ‘chunklets’ than pebbles. just not ‘quite’ as round as the wonderfully round word ‘pebble’ would suggest. top product though.

Golden Review Award: 52 From Our UsersOrdered these because Id been using gravel clippings at the bottom & on top of my pots. not only is it really annoying if you need to change something& disturb the gravel, leaving a mess but also it’s heavy & it hurts my hands. These were the only thing I could find on prime that didn’t cost the earth. I don’t know why I have never used them before, I love them. I picked the bag up half expecting it to be heavy & nearly knocked myself out. They are so light. They are smooth & don’t hurt your fingers & they are also really easy to use-if you need to move them, you can without causing a mess. No faffing about cleaning & draining 15 times to get them ready. They made my usual planting chaos much easier & less of a work out. I’m sold on these bad boys. The only point I’d make is if you’re using in the top & bottom of pots, don’t just buy 1 bag, the bag isn’t huge &they don’t stretch as far as you’d imagine. (I added some upturned plants pots to my bigger pots with a few pebbles so it saves onboth pebbles & compost)

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersI find these are far better than the beige round pebbles, such as Canna’s Aqua Clay Pebbles. I bought a small bag of these, then a large bag of the round ones, as they were slightly cheaper, but that was false economy. These have a few advantages over the round ones: they are more porous, so plant roots actually sometimes grow into these. Have never seen roots growing into the round pebbles – think it’s because they’re less porous. As these are irregular in shape, they have a larger surface area, as stated in the product guide, but it also means they fit together better to provide a stable surface. I use them in gravel trays, with seedlings in non-woven nursery bags in the trays, and the bags don’t stand well on the round pebbles – impossible to get them to provide a reasonably level surface like these do. Also, think these look far better, both the colour and the shape, far more natural. The round ones look totally artificial.. I also use clay pebbles to add to growing media to provide aeration, and am sure these are far more efficient, due to the shape and greater porosity. These also suck up water better than the round ones: if I pour water into a corner of a gravel tray, these will be moist all over the surface a short while afterwards, whereas the round pebbles sometimes stay dry on top, even while some water is standing in the bottom. Think these would also be better than the round pebbles to use with any hydroponic system.. They can also be used as a top-dressing or as a drainage layer in pots or to grow orchids, either mixed with coir chips and/or bark or neat. Very versatile. The size range of the particles is also not as large with these as with the round ones (or maybe it just seems that way due to the shape). Some of these are quite small, but not a large percentage. Using the medium size of the those triple inset soil sieves (about 5 mm holes) will not provide much material, probably about 5% of total, if that. Most will not pass through the largest sieve (about 8 mm holes), maybe about another 5% tops. Most of the pebbles are between 1 – 2 cm in size, but with these, you get more of the middle range, it seems. With the Aqua Clay Pebbles, more seem to be either very big or very small compared to average size, if that makes sense. You can re-use clay pebbles, so having bought a large bag, I don’t really need to buy more, but will probably buy a large bag of these soon, to be able to get rid of the round ones. As to dust/being pre-washed: all clay pebbles give off dust, however much they’re washed. I don’t really understand all the negative comments about these being cheap/low quality/hard to clean/dusty, as said, it’s the nature of the product, they’re made from clay, after all, which is essentially dust when dry. Even when you’ve been using them, and wash them to re-use, they still give off sediment, but I think these give off less dust than the round pebbles. Edit: 2nd bag was dustier than 1st, probably depends on how much they’ve been knocked about during storage/transport. This bag was maybe dustier than round ones and with slightly larger percentage of small pieces, but I still prefer these. I always rinse both types before using them anyway, and would recommend to do this, depending on the application. Not least because it saturates the pebbles, too. Although when I add them to growing media, I don’t wash them first, as the dust won’t hurt in there. I think these are high quality clay pebbles and would recommend..

Golden Review Award: 127 From Our UsersBought these for my orchids as it seems to be more beneficial for them than growing them in bark. Bark decays so they would need repotting after a few years or the plant could get rotten roots. These hold the moisture for longer than bark and there’s less chance of any bugs!
I marked these down by one star due to the amount of cleaning they require. I soaked them for half hour in a bowl, drained them, agitated the water, soaked again, rinsed them about 4/5 times, works better if done in small batches. Still black dust coming out after all that! Also these are meant to be 8-20mm, but I had so many particles that were much smaller than that.
These are very light, definitely not for aquariums as most of them float in water. They are brown/grey in colour so look quite good in orchid clear pots.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersThis is the first time I have set up a flood and drain system, so perhaps this is just due to my inexperience. I was expecting the pebbles to stay submerged, at least after a few good soakings, however these pebbles are so light that they always float to the surface of the water, and lift a significant quantity of the pebbles above the water line. Thus they do not provide a stable media in which to grow small plants. I am still working on a solution for this problem. Also, although they say they are pre-washed, they came with a significant amount of clay dust on them, and even after washing several times they deposited a layer of silt in my tank. This would not be a problem if a more patient person washed them more thoroughly before using.
