These headphones are a great set of modern bluetooth headphones. Noise cancelling is on a par with the Sony xm5 model they are very comfortable to wear and easy to connect.the sound is very clear the bass is punchy and precise and it is good to listen to music and TV equally well.battery life is 20 hours on full anc setting.under 300 these have to be considered the best bluetooth headphones
Had these since November 2022 and they are perfect. Sound great with really good noise cancelling.
Although the noise cancellation is good, be in mind that you will still hear sounds and noise depending on the characteristics of the noise.
Bought these for my Dad as a gift over a year ago and he uses them every day! Great sound quality and really comfortable too.

hey look so good and sound amazing,, huge cups and they don’t press on my industrial piercing!! they do clamp pretty hard on the sides of ur head so it might bother u if u wear glasses !! anc is solid as well,, i love the silver colourway cos it feels so spacey. battery also lasts pretty long
Our daughter wanted some over-ear headphones. After watching some reviews, we ordered these. She loves them. All the family have had a listen and now our other daughter wants a pair for her birthday. Not cheap, but excellent comfort and quality (so far).

Bose quality unbeatable
Spent time looking at reviews of the Sony but decided to go for these – Not disappointed at all. The fit is really good even after 2-3 hours (batter did drop to 80% though). Not tested yet in a noisy environment but when working from home cannot hear the family (bonus) bouncing around the house. Battery life seems ok – but not fully tested to see how long they will last. Handy touch controls. Pairs with both my iPhone and Apple Mac at the same time and really handy to switch between MS teams calls on the Mac and then music on my iPhone. Bought on sale 250 so good price

They’re not bad, just not worth the retail price. They’re almost 3 years old which you can tell by the mediocre sound and ANC quality in comparison to the latest headphone releases. Also worth mentioning is that those headphones are really big – they look rather compact and sleek in the promo photos, in reality the headband is very tall and wide. Sony WH-1000XM5 are definitely sleeker looking (and cost almost double if you consider the fact that you can get refurbished NC 700s from
Bose for a little over 170)

If there’s one little negative is that the battery life could be longer, however it tells you every time you switch them on what % of battery they have so you always know when is time to charge them.

Really great quality headphones, as expected from Bose. Replacing a cheaper pair of wireless headphones that packed up after little use. These cost more but the difference in quality of the sound and various functionality means they are clearly a great buy. Highly recommend!
These are very sleek looking headphones made From quality materials, they are very light and can be used for hours at a time. Noise cancellation is fantastic with 10 different levels adjustable through the app and on headphones themselves, microphones work surprisingly well when taking phone calls, battery life is fine at 20 hours from a 2 hour charge.
On to the main point, the sound quality and these sound fantastic, there is a reputation that bose headphones don’t have much bass and indeed straight out of the box these are neutral sounding headphones but a quick play around with the equaliser on your music app and a little play with the equaliser on the bose app and these will kick out some serious bass!! While retaining that crisp sound separation that no other company does like bose. The bass will kick when it’s supposed to but will not drown out the rest of the music like on the Sony XM series.
These were expensive on release but can now be found on sale at around 200 if you look at the right time, at that price these are a steal and must buy for anyone who appreciates good sounding music
My old Bose NC-700 Headphones got damaged, and I did not hesitate to buy this new pair because I already knew that they are such great quality. They are exactly as described by Bose and Amazon, and they sound incredible over the ears, and the 3 configurable levels of noise cancellation allows great freedom.
I’ve had the QC35 ii’s and Sony XM3’s in the past, this is the best out of them.
I really disliked the XM3’s as I have larg(er) ears and they would get sore after an hour’s use. I know they’re for noise cancelling, but I felt like it was TOO pressurised.
The QC35’s were amazing. Not for ANC, but for the comfort. The NC700’s come close. They’re robust, sleek, comfortable and the ANC doesn’t have that ‘cabin pressure’. I have worn these for hours and only had to slightly adjust. They’re the perfect travel headphones. The protein leather ear cups are so much better than what Sony offer.
The touch sensitivity is also way better than the XM3. Even though the area is small, I can easily increase and decrease my volume and switch tracks.
The app is good too. Not as good as Sony’s, but I’m not much of an audiophile, so I don’t tamper with it much.
Cons:
The EQ settings aren’t as fancy as Sony’s and the ANC customisation is limited. You can’t actually turn the ANC off fully. Even if it’s on 0, the ANC is still on. It’s sometimes annoying as I like to actually like to listen to audio without the slight noise cancelling pressure these provide.
You have to adjust every time you put these back into the case. It can get a bit iffy, but it’s not a huge problem.
The battery life is around 20 hours as advertised. If you’ve switched from Sony’s, you’ll notice that 10 hour battery gap for sure. If you’re a constant user like me, be sure to have your USB C cable with you when travelling.
Bose really needs to update their robot voice in their products. I have bose speakers too.
I’m sure this can be done with a software update. It’s awful. Sony’s is much better.

Every attention to detail is quality with this product, even down to the box it arrives in. I’ll probably use that for nik naks it’s so nice.
The carry case is robust but slimline and the charging cable and jack cable are behind a magnetic panel so they are secured away. The highest quality carry case I’ve ever seen!
Headphones are light but well built. They look gorgeous, I got the silver ones. They feel like a quality item compared to an unbranded pair I bought in 2020 which have now broken, hence the Bose.
Easy to download the Bose Music app and connect to the headphones. Connects to two devices at once. Touch controls on R side of ear cup work well and are easy to control.
Sound quality is excellent, the app has an EQ that you can tweak depending on what genre of music you are listening to.
Battery life is pretty reasonable, when you switch on the phones it tells you how much battery is left on them. A couple hours use equals about 10% battery life.
I’ve had this product for a while now and although the workings of the product on the whole are excellent, the band is uncomfortable across the top of my head after a couple of hours. It leaves a dent in my head where it’s sat. It just means that I have to keep repositioning them on my head. I have the smallest head as well, so the headphones are not even stretched. This is the only gripe I have with an otherwise lovely set of headphones. I would recommend this product, they’re Bose, they do exactly what they say on the tin.
Ultimate test for The noise cancelling is yet to be completed- going on a plane. I’ll try and update the review when that happens in a few weeks.

I previously had Bose headphones not Bluetooth. At the gym it was a bit of a nuisance, so when I saw these on Sale on Primeday I jumped at the chance and was not disappointed. Great sound, very comfortable and noise cancellation was very good.
I received these today. I was so excited but it says to get started I need to download the Bose app. Ok so I went onto App Store, found the app, went to download. I can’t download the app until I have iOS 14 or over. I checked my iPad and I only have iOS 12.5.
After loads of checking my iPad isn’t compatible with IOS14 so it looks like these earphones have to go back. I’m gutted.
I went from Bode QC35s to Apple AirPods Pro Max thinking I was getting the best noise cancelling over ear headphones. I am a normal 9-5 working person and judge the headphones on overall rating. So as for the Bose NC700s I took the plunge on Prime day and got a great deal. The headline is that they are better than Apple. My judgement is mad up of the fact that the bass is better as you can adjust Bass, Mids and Treble in app. They are lighter so makes overall experience feel better. Noise Cancelling is exceptional. Touch controls on ear cup works well. The case is very nice with a compartment inside for charging cable, it has a magnetic cover too. Bose are experienced in sound, gutted I didn’t buy them before.

I discovered noise cancellation for the first time and it is brilliant. I am now able to go on long walks and noise of traffic does not affect what I am listening. My new addition is discovery of podcasts. Life is brilliant with Bose headphones. My only criticism is their phone software which does not recognise headphones existing bluetooth connection with my phone and keeps asking me to reconnect. Hence I have not been able to use full functionality or controls.
My first ever over ear headphones, I have been using inner ear buds for a while and these were ok so decided to get some wireless over ear headphones, I have always used wired before so was dubious after having B&O wired I spent a lot of time reading reviews on various sites and I ended up choosing these and I’m blown away by the sound quality, you can pick out all the instruments in music and also are very comfortable to wear. I can highly recommend these!!!!!!

I bought these today and for the price of 260.99 I feel that they could have included the charger. Mine arrived with just over 1 hour battery use. I then had to go back to Amazon to order a charger. I think it is pretty disgusting to charge so much and then expect you to order a charger. Unless they include a charger which is not a accessory because the charger is needed to charger them up. I will not recommend to anyone to buy them. It sickens me to think that a big company like Bose can not provide too include a charger. For this reason I have marked very low and I am debating returning them. Get your act together Bose and include a charger or reduce the price.

Best Bluetooth headphones I’ve purchased and since it came out I’ve had about a dozen. Lives up and beyond Bose reputation for top end products.
Incredible headphones, the battery lasts for so many hours and if you have to charge it takes only some minutes for an hour of battery. Also, noise cancellation is sooooooooooo good. I can say it’s one of the best in the market right now. I own other brands also and these have to be the best til now. Colour is unique and they are ligh headed.
I would not normally spend this much on a set of headphones. Having invested a third of the price of these on another cheaper set and being unimpressed I decided to go mad and splurge. Recommend by a close friend, I bought a set. As noise cancellation goes, they are amazing! The range is great. I planned to use them on long haul flights but they are brilliant around the house. I listen to audio books a lot and I just wander around the house (three floors, brick partition walls) great connections to my smart phone and tablet, left in any room. Effective range is about 7 metres into the garden. I cook with them on and can have the washing machine, drier and the extraction hood all making a racket and be oblivious to the noise. Sound quality needs to be experienced to be believed. You get what you pay for and these are expensive but they deliver in quality. I love the touch sensitive controls. Battery life isn’t quite as good as similar competitors but unless you are flying to Australia on an aircraft with inflight refuelling who cares. I bought a carry case with built in battery charger so I’m covered even then. Full recharge in an hour, I think. I would buy again, might have to sell a kidney to get one but probably worth the sacrifice?

They are light, comfortable, the design is elegant and sleek at the same time, I personally love the fact they do not double (unlike Sony’s) and you can adjust the length by simply sliding the ear cups up and down. I have seen some comments complaining that you need to slide the ear cups back every time you store them in their case — it takes about 1 sec!!! You need to double Sony’s before placing them in their caseplus Sony’s still have an ‘outdated’ bulky design. The Bose N700 look like an Italian speed car and Sony’s WH-1000XM4 like a terrain car.
– sound — hard to say as both sound great so it comes down to personal preferences. I am a bass head and l love loud volume, so I like Sony a bit more. Bose’s sound is similar to Sennheiser’s . If most of your music is bass heavy, then Sony would be a better choice, if you listen a bit of everything, then go for Bose. Both sound great for movies (watched on my Android phone and iPad)
– noise cancellation — quite similar but I prefer Bose as it cuts out sound almost completely even without the music on.
– sound app — both are ok, but I would say that the Bose one is more suitable for people that do not want to spend a lot of time tinkering the options, fewer than Sony’s, but in the end both apps do what they are supposed to.
– connectivity — I haven’t had any issues till now with either.
– touch controls — again, no issues with either
– price — almost same price currently
– product support — did not have to contact Bose so cannot say but I did contact Sony for their latest earbuds (WF-1000XM4) and they are not a lot of help (to put it mildly) — glad I bought them on Amazon and not directly from Sony!

I bought these headphones purely because I’m a hearing aid wearer. I was a bit hesitant as to whether the ear piece would fit over my hearing aid and I searched and searched and I couldn’t find the answer so i just went in for it and bought them and they fit!! They are the most comfortable headphones I’ve bought! The sound quality is great and the noise cancellation is perfect for when you are out and about especially for me as a hearing aid wearer! Could not reccomend these enough!!

These headphones really deliver when it comes to comfort and nose canceling. When you have them on your head they have a comfortable feel and sit on your head nicely, they won’t squeeze your head iether, yet they won’t fall of. The sound quality on thes headphones is amazing and the nose canceling is amazing to when nose canceling is on it doesn’t make a vacuum in your ears like some other nose canceling headphones, 10/10 from me
Fully satisfied with this sophisticated device. It perfectly and comfortably fits thanks to its unique adjustment design. Lovely app that allows adjustments for bass, treble, etc which I’m happy with. Doesn’t allow too extreme bass that I’m again on bose side to protect my hearing. Noise cancellation is thoughtfully done without affecting the natural frequency and it’s not overdone. Only negatives are battery which drains slowly even if it’s turned off and not used. And unfoldable design. Also it is 262 gr as I weighed and not 250.

The xm3 do have the slight edge in noise cancelling to my ears and the battery life seems better too. Its all about your priorities really. Personally I prefer the look of these to the Sony too.
Really astonishingly good noise cancelling coupled with A blissfully wide and deep sound stage. There is some seriously intelligent DAC going on here. This is what I have been missing for all of these years. Suddenly I’m diving back in to my music all over again.

These have been a game changer for me.
There are 3 levels of noise cancellation; 0 – you can hear what’s going on around you, 5 – takes out dome background noise or 10 – full noise cancelling.
On 10, I can happily mow the garden with a petrol mower (96dBA) and listen to music or an audio book. I find them brilliant.
The battery life is excellent although if you don’t switch them off there will be less change when you next connect.
The sound quality is great, as you’d expect from Bose.
I can take calls through them and I use them for Zoom meetings connected to the computer.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend although a standard charging cable would have been better.
POSITIVES:
– Noise cancelling. Extremely effective, but just beaten by the Sony particularly when trying to reduce spoken dialogue. For everything else i.e. train hum, car hum air conditioning and traffic they are on par with the Sony.
– Call quality. Best in class quality, no other headphone touches this.
– Looks. These are a extremely good looking pair of headphones, Much better than the Sony which look industrial.
– App. I know lots of people have had problems with the app, however my own experience was very good. Easy to use, never crashed and no problems with updates.
Negatives:
– Sound quality. So a bit of perspective here, they have good sound quality, however compared to the Sony’s (which have a better soundstage and bass) and the Shure (a league ahead – apart for audiobooks) they fall down the pecking order.
– Battery. My main reason for returning them. I would fully charge them, use them for 2 hours and I would lose 50% battery.
– Comfort. Once again these are relatively comfortable especially when compared to the Bose. However I have a sort of big head and these do give an unpleasant calming force after an hour or so. I never had this complaint with the Sony.
I got these for someone else as a gift, and they think they are the bees knees. I personally dont particularly like them, not my thing, but the person I got them for was so happy with them. So, I’m just passing on their views.
The noise cancelling is amazing, the sound quality its great and the build quality is excellent. If you have had Bose headphones before, these are a step up in quality terms.

I use Bose Aviation headsets in my day job and, whilst the noise cancellation isn’t as powerful as on those (they cost 7000), these are perfectly good enough for wearing around the house!
Battery life is about 20hrs max, which isn’t as good as the top of the range Sony pair, but who needs more than 20hrs?
The noise cancelling on the mic for phone calls is a really good feature
My housemate owns the Sony’s and pitting them against each other, I see what people mean. The Noise Cancelling is slightly better, the audio footprint is different. However. After flying long haul with my NC700’s, using them day to day, taking calls etc. The quality of the sound is indisputably excellent. Maybe they aren’t as bassy, but that suits me just fine. They are plenty loud enough and in my opinion, look far better than the Sony’s on the head.
The app is a bit of a nightmare, but once you’re through it, it’s plain sailing.
The switching between devices is great and the mic array is exceptional.
I removed a star for noise cancelling purely because the Sony’s DO offer a better experience here, albeit not one that would stop be buying another pair of NC700’s over them!
I got this for travelling, it ticks all the boxes and the Alexa functionality is great.
Having used these for university exam revision for 10+ hrs a day for nearly a month, I can say that these headphones are truly brilliant. There are areas for improvement but if I had no other headphones, these would be my first buy.
Having owned many pairs of standard headphones in recent years, I never really thought NC headphones were worth the money and the cheaper models tend to produce an odd, unsettling noise hiss noise, which just sounded wrong. However, these, and other high end NC headphones, are different: They have the ability to change the way you live. They allow you to work in places you’d otherwise have completely avoided: More comfortable places that you’d rather be, like cafs or stations. They mean you’ll never get sidetracked by a conversation happening right next to you again.
Their only flaw is their audio —while very good, it really ought to be excellent for the money, and I have a couple of pairs of much cheaper, normal headphones, which produce a richer, more natural sound.
A few other notes on their operation: the Bluetooth is excellent – I noticed no compression losses and using the cable only reduces the audio quality (as they must be turned off).The battery life is perfectly sufficient, even with very heavy use, as long as you remember to charge them every few days. There is also a small usb-C cable included in the sturdy carrying case along with the 2.5mm (not 3.5mm) audio cable however, they can’t be charged while you’re listening to them. Lastly, they work best when not wearing glasses as this creates a small gap which reduces the noise cancelling a little.
I personally see these as a better investment than the older Bose QC35 Mk IIs as these headphones are future-proof especially if the novel, built-in AR technology takes off. Side note: the black pair looks too plain and boring in my opinion.

I paid the headphones with an IPhone 11 Pro Max and I have found that the Bluetooth will sporadically drop or connect when the headphones are not in use.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the noise cancellation.
The touch controls in the headphones are easy to use although, they can be sensitive and the volume can inadvertently go up or the track will stop/ start if you accidentally brush them.
I love the ear motion functionality, saves me having to take out my phone or find small buttons on headphones to change track/volume/take calls etc.
Noise cancellation is 10/10.

Yeah these are good quality headphones. They are expensive but good sound quality when on the phone. Easy to use controls and good noise cancelling. If you’re using them day in day out the battery life isn’t as good as some other models. All in all very happy with my purchase.

Brilliant all round product. Comfortable to wear, sleek design. Easy to set up and the noise cancelling is great. While a 20 hour battery life is great, the fact they can’t be used while charging is a slight niggle.
The best I have come across excellent noise cancelling with distortion free playback in the highest quality. Touch controls are nice to no need to get my phone out to turn up and down the volume
so far have been very impressed by the sound and build of the headphones. The app is ok, as in needs work, but that doesn’t bother me much in fact none at all. The sound is very clear and crisp and by far the best I have heard. I have used the Sony’s mx3 and these are better! not by much but they are. I have used these on accouple of flights with a crying baby behind me on one of them and I couldn’t hear it at all, mayor plus for the noise cancelling. If your on the fence I would say go and head and take the leap you wont regret it.
Just love them, I have them on in busses, cars and just hear my music. Just love this ones.
The headphones arrived beautifully packaged along with a USB to USB-C Cable, a male to male audio jack, a manual, and a slick black hard-case.
First impressions upon opening were that these are undoubtedly the best looking headphones on the market right now. They have a contemporary design that can only be described as “Apple”. The plastic is high quality and has an almost “aluminium” look that would perfectly match your MacBook.
After downloading the Bose Music App on my phone and setting everything up, I tried them on and tested out the noise cancellation feature straight away. You can choose how much noise you want to cancel out between 1-10 through the app, and it will blow your mind. It works unbelievably well.
After playing some music, I quickly realised that it was the best sound quality I’ve ever heard. Audio sounds so sharp and crisp. The base sounds great too. If there’s one thing I can almost guarantee about this product, especially if you haven’t owned a pair of high-end headphones before like myself, you will be impressed. Seriously. Super comfy too!
The app is great by the way, I love how it tells you exactly how long the battery life of your headphones will last, along with a bunch of other great features/settings. The “Bose AR” feature sounds really cool and may also be a selling point to some – although admittedly, I haven’t got round to trying it out.
The USB-C charger is also a nice touch as it allows for super-fast charging! Battery life is great too – I can go days between charges.
I tried out these headphones alongside the Kitsound Immerse 75 headphones, which retail at 79.98, whilst at the time of writing this, these headphones are on sale for 299 but retail at 349.95.
Whilst these are undoubtably better, the Kitsound headphones come quite close. Personally, due to the price difference, I would admittedly go for the Kitsound headphones. However, if you have the money and/or are serious about your music – go with these. They are honestly amazing. I’m just torn about whether they’re worth the price or not. I believe that perhaps 199 would be a more appropriate price.
Overall, this is a highest end product that I couldn’t recommend enough – but high price. Possibly too high to justify against cheaper headphones, which are only slightly not as good
The headphone are full ear coverage, light weight and very comfortable. I’ve had a few afternoon kips wearing them and I hardly notice they are there. Sound for the mostly classical and jazz I listen to is bright and covers the full range. Personally, I prefer my headphones wired and that option is covered by and auxiliary cable. It stores neatly in a small compartment inside the case. Took me a wee while to find it and the charging cable. (Duh!) The charging cable is usb C and quite short. I do hear a slight buzz while watching TV shows, but not enough to impact on my enjoyment.
The headphones on bluetooth have to connect via the Bose app. Having to use it is a bit annoying. The app requires that location is switched on, something I don’t always do. Presumable to do with Alexa and Google assistant.
The headphones have to be recognized through the app rather than the standard phone bluetooth. Again unnecessary and annoying.
However these issues doesn’t detract from the quality of the headphones. The price point for noise cancellation headphones is at the upper end compared with other leading brands, but I notice the price has come down recently.
Overall, an incredibly good pair of cans, despite the issues described.
I took some time testing various different Bluetooth headphones and although the Bose NC700’s cost around 40 more than the Sony equivalents, after some consideration I felt it was worth the extra cost. They work with both Alexa and Google Assistant and the sound quality, which ultimately is what you buy them for, is absolutely fantastic. Of course I appreciate listening to various styles of music and the type of sound is subjective, but these offer superb sound throughout the range, and the noise cancelling is nothing short of amazing. I recently listened to music and watched a film on a flight back from Cyprus and was totally impressed with how much they cut out any noise of the aircraft or any other surrounding din. Its easy to switch between different levels of noise cancellation via the app, so if the air hostess or my partner spoke I could comfortably hear what they had to say. I cannot praise this product high enough and if you’re slightly undecided, trust me and purchase these headphones, you definitely won’t regret it.
OK. So, these are objectively amazing headphones, but they come with an eye-watering price tag, so this review is going to be a little picky in places. If you are paying this price, I would not want you to discover something that really bugs you later.
The headphones come in a simple cardboard box, which opens with tearaway strips to reveal the case and a ‘get started’ leaflet. The case is a rounded leather-look affair, with a zip that runs around the circumference. Unzip to reveal the headphones, plus a small pocket containing a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and a headphone cable with standard AUX plug.
The start-up instructions are brief to the point of non-existent. Just 2 diagrams — (1) download the Bose Music app; (2) turn on the bluetooth. The headphones come with enough charge to get going, although you’ll want to give them a full charge later.
Here is the first of my niggles, especially as this review is posted on Amazon. You CANNOT connect the headphones initially WITHOUT the app. And the app is available only on Android or iOS, NOT the Amazon app store. So, if anyone reading this wants these headphones to connect to their Fire tablet, you will need to have a suitable phone available to get started. For some reason, the app also requires you to turn on full GPS location services first – I have no idea why! Once you have connected the headphones to the first device, you can THEN connect to further devices with simple Bluetooth connection as normal (but you will always need the app to change headphone settings). I was able to connect my Fire 8 as a second device, no problem.
To be honest, I have long had mixed feelings about this design choice (offloading functionality to a mandatory app). I know it allows the designers to reduce the number of buttons and controls on the headphones — making them sleeker and cleaner-looking — and potentially to add more features later with upgrades, but I hate being locked in to dependency on an app in this way.
The design of the headphones is unique and very classy. A big move away from the utilitarian design of previous models. A single sleek curved headband that joins to the earcups on the outside. The join between headband and cups looks minimal, but there must be some magic engineering underneath, as the cups are firmly fixed. The cups slide up and down the band to establish a snug fit (sliding is a little stiff, but I guess it needs to be to stop the cups sliding out of position when in use). In terms of size, there is a limit to how small the cups can be made, and these get pretty close to it — they look a lot less bulky than most other models out there. I have fairly normal sized ears, and they fitted snugly around them, but with little to spare. If you have larger ears, you might want to try some for size before you buy! The springiness of the curved band holds the cups to your head — I found the pressure of this was noticeable, but tolerable — at least for a 2-hour flight. The leatherette covering on the cups is very soft and comfortable (and there is a large L and R printed inside, so you know which cup is which).
For storage, the cups rotate so the headphones become ‘flat’ and fit in the case. I found that the case fitted very nicely into my small wheely suitcase for travel, and equally would fit in a rucksack, briefcase or large handbag. But the case is still 18x22cm at its widest points, and slightly ‘wedge’ shaped from 6 down to 4cm thick. Other headphones may offer more folding options (although then you have a hinge to worry about breaking)
Soundwise, I got what I expected. Bose has had a lead in noise cancellation for years, and these work amazingly. At maximum, it’s like being in a sealed box, but if you find that uncomfortable, you can drop the amount of cancellation until you hear a fraction of the outside world, or turn off altogether. Turning power on and off is marked by a brief strum on a double bass (classy!) and a female voice tells you how many hours’ power you have left (a full charge is about 20 hours). The sound is nice, but it definitely has a ‘profile’, with some boosting of the bass. Another negative point for audiophiles is that there is NO option to change the sound — no graphic equalizer or tone adjustment. Maybe they will add this to the app later, but for now, you would need an additional app on your source device to change the sound.
The Bluetooth connection is really stable (it uses the latest Bluetooth 5), pairs almost instantly, and has a decent range if you happen to be moving around away from your phone/tablet. Watching a movie on my tablet, I could not discern any lag in the sound (i.e., none of that annoying thing where the sound runs slightly behind the lip movements!)
These headphones support SBC and AAC audio codecs — which is the best iOS can output. But again, for audiophiles who want support for more advanced codecs like Qualcomm’s aptX or Sony’s LDAC — look elsewhere!
I also really like that you can connect two devices at once. This means you can have your phone connected at the same time as your tablet. If you are watching a movie on the tablet, and the phone rings, you can answer it straight into the headphones and the playback from the tablet automatically mutes.
For controls, you have only 3 buttons. On the left cup, a button to switch between presets on the noise cancellation level (by default, 10, 5 and 0 — but changeable in the app) — or hold it down to temporarily pause noise cancellation to allow you to talk to other people (although it’s as easy to pull the cup away from your ear!). On the right cup, there is one button to turn the headphones on and off, and one to trigger voice assistant controls. The headphones support Siri, Google assistant and Alexa. I have tried these headphones for making calls, and they work better than you would expect. Although the microphone is on the ear cups (some way from your mouth), the noise cancellation technology is also used to eliminate background sounds from the environment when you are talking, so it comes through loud and clear.
The right ear cup is touch sensitive and works really well. Swipe up/down for volume up/down, double tap to play/pause, swipe forward/back for next/previous track. The only trick that is missing is that clever thing some headphone do of auto-pausing when you take them off.
In summary, these are sleek, beautiful headphones with high quality materials, superb noise cancellation and great connectivity. Apart from the price barrier, the only reasons not to buy them would be if any of the niggles I have noted are a big factor for you (dependence on app, size of case, lack of advanced audio codecs and tone controls). Otherwise, these are amongst the best you can buy right now.
Opening the box up, the first thing that struck me was how much nicer the case looked than the QC35s. It’s tapered and everything is neater. You lift the headphones up and there is a little trap door where the various leads are kept, and a nice touch is that the door is held in place magnetically. I wondered at first what the point of that is, and decided that if you are in the habit of keeping the case in a bag while you are wearing the headphones, it stops the leads from moving around. The old case has a net compartment in the lid, and the leads would frequently come loose. It’s not a big deal, but it shows the thought and attention to detail that went into this. Oh, but it’s a fingerprint magnet. Expect to have to clean it every time you show it off to anyone (if that’s your idea of a good time).
The headphones themselves are a sight to behold. The first time I saw a photograph of them, I wasn’t all that impressed. No hinge to fold them up? The headband looked a bit cheap too (I thought). It’s only when you see them in the flesh, as it were, and pick them up, that you appreciate the quality. The lack of a hinge is in fact one of the best things about them as it turns out. I’ve got Sony, Bose, Sennheiser ‘phones, all of which have to be twisted and then folded to fit them in their cases, and I’ll bet that a good 50% of the time I get it wrong. I fold the wrong earcup first and then have to start again. With the 700s that’s not going to happen, it’s simplicity itself. And that headband? Pure class. It’s made of metal, not plastic as I assumed, and the whole thing feels like a substantial piece of kit. I’m not one of those people who walks around town listening to music, but I did once take a three mile walk along a main road to test some headphones out, and I was getting funny looks from everyone I met. I took a selfie and sent it to my wife, and on it I wrote, “I look like a Cyberman.” I’m not saying that I wouldn’t still get the funny looks if I had these on, but at least I wouldn’t look like something out of Dr Who.
Comfort-wise these are excellent, but having said that I’ve yet to find a pair of the big hitters (by which I mean those noise cancelling headphones which cost around the 300 mark) that aren’t comfortable. I’ve read a few comments about the high ‘clamping force’ of these, the implication being that if you have a larger than average sized head you may not get on with them, but I can only tell it as I find it. They are fine for me.
I sat and listened to various different styles of music and found that everything was good and the sound was balanced. You won’t get a ten page report on the audio from me, I’m sorry to say. I find those things totally pointless, having more than once seen a string of comments about particular headphones where two owners came to a 180 degree opposite conclusion. “Too bassy” says one, and “just the right amount of bass” says another. “Sparkling clarity” followed by “completely muffled sound”. Ridiculous. I listened to a half dozen different and varied artists and never once felt the need to switch off. I was playing through a Sony NW-A45 dedicated MP3 player, if you need to know the source.
Of course, if you already own a half dozen or more different pairs of headphones and you’re going to sit there making comparisons between them all, it’s likely you’ll discover that you already own something which you consider superior, so please don’t hold me responsible for your disappointment. All I’m saying is that these sound excellent, and if you’re a first time buyer I can’t think of a single reason why you would be unhappy with the way they put out music. What I will say is what I always say when reviewing this type of headphone. If sound quality is your absolute major concern, and you don’t really need the noise cancelling or the Bluetooth, DO NOT buy these as your day to day listening device. These are not true HiFi headphones, and if you really want to spend 350 because the money is burning a hole in your pocket, investigate wired headphones. Beyer, AKG, Sennheiser, the choice is endless. Otherwise, you’ll be fine with these. UNLESS….
Here’s the one exception to all that.Some people like to take their headphones on a flight, or a coach trip or whatever, and sit with them switched on (no music playing) to enjoy the peace. If thats what you want, then maybe these aren’t the best option. I’ve seen people saying that with the 700s Bose has finally become the class leader for noise cancelling, and I’m sorry but that simply isn’t true. They’re a very, very close second to the Sony WH-1000MX3, but still not quite ahead and Sony have got the edge as far as higher frequencies are concerned. But look, that’s a very specific case, and if you want some nice looking and musically enjoyable headphones these are as good as you’ll get. As soon as the music kicks in, any concerns you may have about background noise become irrelevant, and all you can hear is the sound coming from the player. Between these and the Sony the difference is marginal, but I would be lying if I said there was no difference at all. In the end it comes down to personal choise based on all the various factors, but as I keep saying, anyone who gets a pair of these would have a hard job convincing me that they aren’t worth the money compared to what else is out there.
What about the Bluetooth? Version 5.0 is installed, which means that to get the full benefit you need to pair it with another 5.0 device. Some of the newer phones have it, most older MP3 players don’t, but at least you’re future proofed. Connecting to the Sony player (version 4.2) was simple and quick, ditto my Samsung S10+ phone (version 5.0). I wandered around the house while music played in the living room and had no connection problems, a scenario which is in any case totally abnormal for me. If I am listening to music the player will be next to me, so Bluetooth works perfectly whatever the situation. You may be concerned that only the basic SBC and AAC codecs are available, but my honest opinion is that when I use the other headphones I own – the ones which also have Aptx and LDAC – I can not tell any difference when switching between them.
And so to the other features. The noise cancelling is adjustable via both the app and a button on the earcup. You can switch between three different settings of your choosing, although I bet most people will leave it as it is. 0 (off), 5 (midway) and 10 (full on). I guess I’m missing something here, but this is what I call the solution to a problem that nobody knew existed. Why have some of the best noise cancelling available, and then think, “Oooh, I think I’d like to make it worse. Can I have a button for that please?” Answers on a postcard. If you do need to hear what’s going on outside, or maybe somebody wants to talk to you and you don’t want to take the headphones off (which, personally, I think is the height of bad manners) you can achieve that by holding the button down instead.
Battery life is quoted at 20 hours, which is less than some players that claim around half as much again. I don’t envisage 20 hours ever being too little, unless I decide to fly to Australia and can’t get to a charger before I reach my hotel, which is not going to happen. I think 20 hours should be enough for most people.
You can take phone calls from your smartphone using the inbuilt microphones, a feature which I have never and will never use, but in the interests of this review I had a look at some online videos and the sound quality – which is a major selling point for this device – was incredible compared to the competition. If I had a use for it, and based on what I’ve seen and heard, I’d be queueing up for a pair of these.
There are also the usual touch controls on the earcups. These are now so commonplace that you can barely call it a feature at all, and I’m a bit of an old fashioned listener in that when I play an album I like to go from track one to the end, so pausing and skipping tracks is rarely necessary. When I do want to do it, I automatically use the player itself, but I guess if you’re out and about walking through the town centre and your phone is in your pocket, then the ability to control the music without having to look at a screen is essential. Needless to say, everything works as it should once you’ve got the hang of it.
Overall, the only thing which is currently stopping me from going the whole hog and handing out five stars, is the cost. Because these are new(ish), and still selling at or close to the full price of around 350, you may think that some of the older and similarly featured headphones (which now sell for less) would be better for you. You’re paying for the privilege of being an early adopter, but I don’t think you’d regret the premium once you get your hands on them.
EDIT… I write this extra bit while on holiday. So far I have used these: on a five hour coach trip; in a crowded theatre before the show, while music was playing; on the top deck of a ship at sea, surrounded by passengers; and in a cafeteria right next to a ballroom dance class in full swing. Everything was first class, I never had any problems hearing the music and never heard the outside distractions at all. All the touch controls work perfectly, with no accidental mistresses.
In a real world scenario these are a first class product, and if I didn’t have the Sony headphones at home to make the comparison then I’d probably be giving five stars.
First of all, let me apologise… I’m not technically minded when it comes to sound quality or the technical details when it comes to stuff like this. But. But. I do listen to a LOT of music, and I appreciate having a decent pair of headphones to listen with. My old pair has moulted over the years and I had to keep turning the volume up. So these came, and I am just over the utter moon. They are everything, they come neatly wrapped in a superb cardboard box, with the headphones stored in a hard case. They also come with the USB charger lead and an aux cable to plug in if you run out of charge. And the instructions. To set up, you download the app and switch the headphones on. Oh my word, the sound. It plays a really pretty little tune. Which is pretty loud. Then you’re pretty much ready to go. First of all, you need to set your equaliser (on the music streaming app you use, check their support in case you don’t know) to flat or switch it off completely. I then started listening. Oh my goodness, the quality is wonderful. It’s high on the bass, it makes some of my favourites come alive (bass-heavy pop works fantastically) although more of the acoustic numbers doesn’t really work as well. The noise cancelling is superb in that it feels like my ears have been sucked into a vacuum. I can’t hear my family or indeed anything. It’s amazing. And concerning. But it can also be adjusted in the app which is brilliant. What I also love is the touch controls on the side of the earcup, which is fab. It needs practice in the mirror to get the hang of it (instructions are on the app) but it is a fantastic touch. My only sad thing to say is the bit you adjust the earphones with to make it larger or smaller is a bit flimsy and due to how pricey they are, I’d be gutted if I broke it. Other than that, this is the bees. knees. I love it!
I haven’t had the chance to test the 700’s noise cancelling capability on a flight yet, but so far it seems superior even to the QC35. That’s certainly true around the house, on the street and on Southern’s nasty trains. Turning the cancellation down on things like trains helps make announcements audible. I’m not sure of the value of eleven levels of adjustment, but they don’t do any harm. You can set your favourite three and toggle quickly between them — the defaults are 0, 5 and 10.
One or two reviewers have complained about the Bose Music app but it’s working just fine for me. It really adds value to the headphones, allowing you to fiddle with all sorts of things such as voice assistant, wake word, music services, noise cancellation, source, as well as simple things like volume.
Some magazine reviews of the QC35 II rated competitive headphones higher for sound quality. I always thought the QC35 II superb but, after careful listening, the 700 does seem a small step up. I certainly have no complaints except perhaps that the sound seems a little better wired than wireless. There isn’t much in it though, and it may just be my imagination. The 700 competently handles quiet passages in classical music as well as powerful bass. Saint-Saens’ organ symphony sounds superb, as does choral music and spoken voice. Whether bass fiends will be satisfied I can’t say. There’s little or no sound leakage.
There seems mixed opinion on whether the 700 clamps too tightly to your head. I have a pretty big head but haven’t found a problem. The 700 is lightweight, and comfort is fine with me, even for long sessions. The slider adjustment for the cans is easy to use, perhaps too easy but they do generally stay put. They have to be slid to minimum to get them back in the case, but that’s true of every headphone I’ve owned.
Anything else? I don’t normally need to connect to two Bluetooth sources simultaneously but it’s good to know I can. Not that I’ve tried it. Conversation mode is useful, if someone, e.g. a train guard, wants to talk to me, although it takes a second or two to take effect, so it’s best if you see them approaching. Lastly, it seems a bit mean that an aircraft adapter isn’t supplied in the box.
Overall, I’m absolutely delighted with the 700. And Mrs Gumby is delighted to have my QC35!
