5.0 out of 5 stars The same as before, but bette
Demon’s Souls was an incredible game when it launched so many years ago, and the core gameplay is still as testing and intensive on a new generation of hardware. The graphics are where all of the work has been done in this revision, to ensure that Boletaria and its denisens look better than ever. A lot of the marketing and talk about the game focuses too much about how hard it is, and while it is a brutal game, more fanfare should be made of how involved and interesting the place is. A great example of telling a story through showing, rather than saying.

    Difficult unresponsive gameplay
Really wanted to like this game. Graphics are very good and no doubt there is a deep & impressive world to explore. The game lets its self down in my opinion with the controls and gameplay. Everything feels slow and unresponsive & you cannot edit the controller buttons ( I admit i’m playing this game directly after finishing Returnal, so my review might not be entirely fair with regard to the game being unresponsive, but thats the impression it gives me) Maybe I should have played this game first. Anyway, not for me.

    update

decided to give it another go and I’m glad I did. still slightly frustrated with controlling the character but can’t stop playing it now. 4 1/2 stars.

    Beautifully Remade, Warts and All.
After DS3 I’d taken a break from Souls games for the sake of my sanity, but having got a PS5 my options for games were very limited and my curiosity got the better of me, so here I am feeling like I’ve been through the Souls wringer one more time.

The graphics of Demon’s Souls are actually a mixed bag for me. What you see is very well-crafted, however the biggest drawback is the level design and the dark and dankness of pretty much every level. When you get to more colourful and vibrant environments the game shines, however many levels such as the prison, swamp and tunnel were just so dark and dingy that I feel they really missed an opportunity to show off what the PS5 can do. I think this is a result of staying faithful to the original a bit too much, which is a recurring problem in Demon’s Souls.

The gameplay of DS has rarely been better than it is here. Anyone having played any DS game will feel at home. The backstabs, rolls and challenging gameplay are here in spades and typical Souls-fashion. For the most part this is excellent and they aren’t changing what doesn’t need to be changed. Yet there are some baffling design choices that should have changed.

The game basically has an extra layer of difficulty that arises from bad design to me. A lack of bonfires means a long journey to get to most bosses if you die. Think Bed of Chaos only not so maddening, There are shortcuts but these aren’t at all short at times.

The level design leaves much to be desired. You have 4 levels split into roughly 4 sections, however each one is quite one-dimensional and some of the labyrinthian elements are downright frustrating and unbalanced, such as the prison and swamp. This detracted from my enjoyment noticeably and again seems the result of remaking rather than reworking the original.

If there was one game mechanic I would have changed it would be health being cut in half when in Phantom form. This is bewildering design choice, making for punishing rather than challenging gameplay. Add to this the unnecessary world tendency mechanic and I was not impressed at having to spend 90% of the game at 50% of health. This is something sequels rectified and the remake should have also.

Finally for gameplay, we have the boss fights. I’m actually torn on whether this is a good or bad thing, but most of the bosses resemble puzzles rather than fights. This means no matter how skilled you are you are not going to win unless you figure out the mechanic or look it up online as I had to do a good few times. I think only the Dragon God boss really irks me and anyone who has played the game will know why – it’s just bad and banal game design. Having said that, the diversity of bosses is very good and few were outright unbalanced.

Lastly, the story. As typical for souls games, the story here is minimal at the surface level but you can delve further into the lore if you like. This is something I’ve always applauded Souls games for, however at the beginning of Demon’s Souls we do get a fairly hefty story introduction and I am happy to see that too.

Overall, Demon’s Souls is faithful to the original, for the worse in my opinion. However, this is still a pretty good Souls game and it actually makes me appreciate Dark Souls all the more. I am glad Demon’s Souls was not my first Souls game as I can really feel the ‘prototype’ nature of it in comparison to Dark Souls. It’s a bit of an indictment on modern gaming that a remake of a PS3 game is the USP of the PS5, but at least it’s actually a good game and not riddled with live services and microtansactions.

Awesome game. Great graphics. A quirky sense of humour.
    What I loved:
    ==========
    1) Great Graphics.
    2) Good sound effects
    3) Feels immersive with haptic feedback.
    4) Excellent storyline. Complex for a newbie to get to grips with Character vs World Tendency. But you can find that info on Youtube/Fextralife if you’ve never played any of the predecessors in the series.
    5) The ‘quirky’ reference was primarily in relation to the plague babies. That part reminds me of whack a mole!
    6) The way the game becomes an entirely different animal depending on the rings you wear, and the World Tendency, Black being harder, White being easier.
    7) The variety of gameplay tactics on offer.. Ranged as an archer, Mid range with Magic, In your face with swords, axes etc, and Faith builds that provide healing characteristics.

    What I didn’t like:
    ==============
    1) Lack of manual (there are options built in and message markers in places like the tutorial/Nexus, but that barely scratches the surface. Something like Master of Orion’s manuals from back in the 90’s. Really detailed breakdown on maths involved (thinking levelling, weapons, what foes are susceptible to what damage type etc). But you pick that up with trial and error eventually.
    2) Inventory
    a) You sort things, put something in, then have to resort, rather than it retain sort order on insertion.
    b) You should be able to say don’t send to either Stockpile Thomas/carry yourself.
    c) Materials – you should be able to classify by type -default seems most logical. But it breaks down when you run out completely of an item and restock – it then often ends up at the start of the list. I want to see size within Type order.
    d) Weapons. Would like to see one icon per type (with a number, rather than it listed 99 times!). Ideally you would be able to see all the upgraded versions by clicking into the icon – so Short Sword -> Blessed Short Sword etc.
    e) Should be able to select what is in an item slot and move all of it to inventory without the rigmarole of of removing it from items slots.
    f) Should be able to say discard straight from storage box.
    3) Some of the characters like Stockpile Thomas needs a more varied dialog. Gets boring after a while hearing same thing.
    4) Amour reword for the 26 ceramic coins. Underwhelmed. Aesthetically pleasing. But a couple of other armour sets are better. Can’t believe the grind I went thru to get that only for it to come up so short of the mark.
    5) In the Nexus, Maiden in Black keeps standing by Stockpile Thomas, making it awkward to interact with him.
    6) Suddenly after 666+hrs of game play I thought the save game file got corrupted, because I could no longer send inventory to Stockpile Thomas. I always synched my save games to cloud too. So I thought I was hosed. After a few of days of not hearing back from anyone at Bluepoint, it dawned on me, maybe there is an item cap limit I hit and that was why I could not send items to inventory. Decided to retrieve then discard a pickaxe, then send a Clearstone Chunk to inventory. Voila – sending items to inventory worked again. I really didn’t like the fact the ame gave no feedback saying you’ve hit the max inventory limit, you need to discard some items.
    7) Following on from last point.. No ability to sort weapons in inventory by quantity. It would also be good if you could set a limit on the number of weapons you can send to inventory before auto-discarding. 7 seems reasonable as a default, so you can have enough to do the weapon upgrades to max per weapon. Some that need Clear Demon Soul upgrade only need one – but having 7 so you have spares is still ok. I had loads of Hands of God, Pickaxes, War Scythes, Uchigatanas, Winged Spears…
    8) You can’t delete individual characters. It’s all or nothing. So, if you had a few attempts at killing the training boss you were left with characters you never use too.

    What I an hesitant about:
    ====================
Doing online gaming (PVP vs PVE) – the amount of time it takes to level up (over level 300 currently), only to have someone Soulsucker you makes me wary!
Even so, i have been playing for months and can’t leave it alone. I highly recommend. On my 9th play-through. I have other games to try out like Ghost of Tsushima to try out, but I can’t seem to put this one down.

Exceptional game for the ps5 but...
First time I play a game of this series. I really enjoyed it even if it did frustrate me to the highest point at times… to say that the game is hard is an understatement. It took me more than 50 hours to beat it but I will probably play it again (and get frustrated again…).
    Beautiful game and soundtrack.
I guess they could make a slightly less difficult mode…

    My worst Soulsbourne, but grea
The original PS3 release of this passed me buy but here are my views on what was a PS5 system seller for me…

    Pros
It feels like Dark Souls but with a different and frankly brilliant progression structure – hub that gives access to 5 main levels that can be tackled as you please
    Stunning graphics
    Typically great Soulsbourne enemy design
A rewarding challenge. I almost gave up many times but getting the platinum was very satisfying.
World 4. Not sure of consensus, but the Stormy World was brilliantly designed for me with a jaw-droppingly spectacular (if easy) end boss.

    Cons
Feels like an old game after DS3’s polish. Eg, archaic level layout with few shortcuts to bosses. 5-1 anybody??
Soulsbourne games have a reputation for being hard but fair. This is too often unfair. Eg, one hit kills in NG+, enemies that are only difficult due to massive health pool and resistance to damage like old king doran. (eg. Black phantoms).
World and character tendencies – there is something really clever about these but don’t wait for the game to explain anything about them and the implications to you.
The lamest bosses in the soulsbourne games. I found maneaters and flame lurker the toughest but ultimately predictable compared to DS3 and bloodbornes bosses. I guess to be expected for an older game.
Difficulty spike between first playthrough and NG+ seems huge to me and will deter some from trying out spells they only learned in NG+
The price. I got mine for 35 on ebay, but that RRP, insane.
    The whole of world 5.

All in all a great game. At times it will annoy the hell out of you, at times it will blow your mind. But soulsbourne fans who missed this on the PS3 will be in dreamland with this game.

Though the graphics looked amazing, good combat, the game is still demon souls from the first game, with the same glaring bugs and pvp issue. I feel their were some missing opertunity for improvement such as dragon god demon boss fight could of been improved and possibly dlc new areas to explore for the price tag 70 pound personally i feel this is far to expensive for a game ps i paid 55 for this, the 70 price tag is also reason for the so critical review.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAbsolutely incredible and rewarding game
After spending 61 hours in this game getting every single trophy I felt compelled to write a 5 star review somewhere to share my feelings on it.
I started the game and felt like it was going to be SUCH a slog at first. But through determination and some cleverly timed rolling I started to progress and beat the first boss – who knows, I probably died 50 times in that first level. It eventually started clicking for me and I felt my character progressing and getting stronger. Then I learned to farm for souls to level up, then I learned that my armor was too heavy so I couldn’t roll fast enough, then I learned how miracles and magic can help me get past a difficult bit.
It was such an incredible journey from start to finish. I have never decided to Platinum a game but after a single play through I just picked it up the day after and kept going to pick up those loose trophies and by the end of the 2nd play through I felt like a god. It’s a game that you take great pleasure in mastering! So rewarding.
Don’t be put off by those that say it’s too difficult! Be brave and hold your shield high round the corners. And don’t be afraid to go on YouTube to check a few strategies – one of the best parts for me was interacting with the awesome Reddit and YT communities!

Brilliant; far and away the best PS5 launch title
Demon’s Souls is probably the best game I have ever played. I had heard of the Dark Souls games but never played them, and only tried Demon’s Souls became it (luckily) came as part of a bundle with my PS5. I can honestly say that in the last month since I got the console, I have had no interest in any of the other games I bought. I finished it a couple of weeks ago and am now at the end of my second game via new game plus. It is a really addictive game and I can’t bring myself to leave the world behind.

The game is amazing, the perfect marriage of classic gameplay and cutting edge technology and presentation, but it probably isn’t for everyone. It’s an adjustment getting used to it; the first level is pretty hard if you’re new to the playing style, and you will die a lot. But I can honestly say it’s the most satisfying video game I have ever played. When the game mechanics start to fall into place, and your character gets stronger, and you conquer the more challenging boss fights – it’s just an incredible feeling. The graphics also happen to be supremely beautiful, and I haven’t seen any other video game that looks as good as this one does. The soundtrack and sound effects are also superb.

Finally, I’m a little surprised how many people are giving the game a terrible rating because of the price. I agree it is pretty expensive, but not only is it expensive because it is a next gen game made for a brand new, quite expensive console, the game is in any case so good as to be worth every penny.

First time playing a souls game. I hated it at first. It was stupidly hard. But now. Now I’m a stone cold, steel booted, annihilating beast of a demon slayer (in no way thanks to the reaper soul farm!).

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy first Souls game has me hooked
To clarify on the title, this is the first Soulsbourne game I have completed all the way from start to finish. I have played previous games a little including Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3 but I’ve only scratched the surface of those games..

So.. Anyway.. Demon’s Souls is the first From Software game I have completed all the way through and then instantly gone back for a second play-through. I got a Ps5 on launch day in the UK and didn’t pre-order Demon’s Souls, instead I decided to get it a few weeks after launch, it was a bit of a shot in the dark considering I haven’t played many of the past Souls games. As a first complete experience I loved this game. There is clearly a lot of passion in this remake, the sound and visuals are absolutely top notch and the music (despite what some die hard fans may tell you) is brilliant and beautiful. The Duelsense controller is incorporated really well with the rumble, haptic triggers and controller speaker all being put to use here. In total this lasted me a good 28-30 hours on my first play-through, all hours I would happy do again. Whatever I say about this game will not be the same as playing it, it needs to be experienced.

In summary this game has prompted me to buy the Dark Souls trilogy on Ps4 and Sekiro, here’s hoping the rest of them are this brilliant!

    New to the series
I have never played a Souls game or any other spin off from the developer, so I was completely new to a game like this. I have heard of the series reputation of being difficult and it scared me away until this game was bought for me with the PS5 by my Wife.

I am half way through and having a ton of fun! It’s challenging but enough to remain fun and addictive. Some maps are a complete maze but you get familiar with them enough to know where you are going. Don’t be afraid to look for tips online, but I try to stay away, so I don’t spoil the experience.

It’s all about trail and error, so you need a lot of patience and strategic thinking. The relief and happiness that comes with beating a boss is unmatched in gaming.

As I have a full time job and two young children my time is limited, and this game is easy to pick back up from where you left off. The cut scenes are short and the storyline isn’t too complicated to understand, and it’s an easy game to get into.

Overall it’s a great game, worth playing and I am looking forward to playing the Dark Souls games and Bloodbourne after this. Fun, addictive, and I think you should give it a shot, but it’s probably best to wait until it gets cheaper if you’re unsure.

I personally think its an amazing game in every way possible. I would highly recommend to those who played the original on the Ps3 and have followed the Soulsbourne games since then. If your new to the series i would probably watch some gameplay first as this type of game is not for everyone. Apart from that im extremely happy with this game, fast loading times and crisp graphics to say the least. And because i knew how good this game was I didn’t hesitate to purchase it at 69.99, which i find reasonable for a next gen game, especially on how good it looks and performs.

I was a huge fan of the original Demon’s Souls on PS3 and this just brings back everything from the original but with up to date graphics, animations and audio.
It is far easier than any Dark Souls game and the AI is dated since it hasn’t changed from back in 2009, but other than that, this is an absolute masterpiece and is a must buy if you own a PS5.

Just finished getting the platinum on this game, roughly took me about 3 and half playthroughs to achieve on a character of 50hours playtime. The first playthrough took me about 25 hours. NG+ is seriously a jump up in difficulty, with my character being one shot by most enemies.

This game is beautiful, loads super fast – the worlds are amazing to explore and you can see real inspirations for bloodborne in there (cough cough tower of latria) Seriously, if bloodborne was the main system seller for the ps4 then this right here is the ps5 system seller. Despite multiple times wanting to rage quit against the maneater boss in NG+, you wont be disappointed with this purchase.

Excellent remaster of an already great game. Its the first of the “super hard” games released by From Software- you will die…a lot but that’s a key mechanic of the game. It will frustrate the living daylights out of you but you’ll want to try again and each time you’ll get just that little bit further. Only knocked down by star because of the price- 70 for a remaster of a game more than 10 years old isn’t right – buy it when it’s cheape

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersRefreshing, rewarding a true remaster.
Demon Souls, where to start. (TLDR at the bottom).

First off, let’s get the nitty gritty out of the way.
This is a true remaster, not a touch up, or scale of resolution. It’s rebuilt from the ground up but retains all what made the original so unique and fantastic.

Accompanied by the speed of the PS5’s SSD you load into the games menu in an instant, greeted by this ominous title screen which is enough to make you put the controller down and walk away already!

Upon starting your first adventure into Boletaria you are allowed to create a character with so-so character customisation (usual for the series so not unexpected for me) and a class to choose from. No difficulty selection, this game increases difficulty in NG+ forms.

Once done you step into this games idea of a tutorial’. Immediately, the fine details, art style and graphics make your eyes widen and your lower jaw drop.

The game offers a 4K@60fps mode which still looks beautiful and plays buttery smooth (my preferred mode) or for extra fine details 4k@30FPS. The choice is ultimately down to the individual.

Being a From Software title this game is challenging. Especially if new to the genre/series. However, it is a perfect time to get involved with the series with this wonderful remaster.

Challenge isn’t met without reward, upon dying for 10th or even 50th time, you may want to quit, walk away and never return. But all it takes is that click and you reach this new found peak of skill. You defeat x boss and you’re overwhelmed with a sense of true achievement which is rare in games now.

Be prepared to spend countless hours getting lost, retracing steps and of course swearing like no tomorrow! But also that unique feeling of accomplishment, fear, anxiety and proudness that frankly no other game delivers in the amount these titles do.

The difficulty in these titles is fair, I’ve seen other reviewers making it out like the games grossly unfair to the player. It’s not. It just doesn’t hold your hand and wrap you in wool.

It chucks you in the deep end and says here you go. With practice and patience you will learn to love the titles.

So coupled with the above, the great online play which is in a nut shell another player invading your world or you invading theirs!

Multiple play styles be it magic, strength, two handers, sword/shield.

Crisp graphics, a soundtrack which truly captures the tone of the game.
Amazing audio even more so when played with 3D audio on the PS5 which makes every creak, groan and twang of a sword a crisp, rich and detailed experience.

Truly remarkable and an unmissable experience in my books!

9/10 (-1 for the high price point, but even still you get your money’s worth!)

TLDR: Fantastic remaster, glorious rich, detailed graphics accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack. Souls borne fans will feel right at home whilst being blown away. Newcomers will likely be put off by the difficulty but do not be afraid!

Fantastic and must be played! Good job From Software!

Brilliant game. I haven’t played the original but have played Bloodborne and I couldn’t wait to give this a try. For those giving low reviews and say game is repetitive. I understand that feeling . I felt like that when I started playing Bloodborne but if you keep going and get your head around the fact the story is not linear you will really enjoy it. It’s a different type of gameplay. The game is about levelling up, getting stronger and to complete one of these games feels amazing. At such a high price make sure you know what you’re buying because it’s not for everyone but as a souls fan this is literally amazing !!

Ignore those complaining about the price, they haven't bought it clearly. Worth every penny.
Ignore the 1 star reviews. This new trend of supporting something by review bombing others needs to stop. The game is fantastic, the only game on the market currently that truly looks Next Gen – and for long term players of the ps3 version they’ve managed to make it feel like the old Demon’s Souls.

Been reading the 1 star reviews as i was interested to know how anyone can’t like this game. Well, they’re hilarious!! Thsi game is rubbish because i can’t do it!!
This game is incredible, yes it’s hard but never unfair. Each attempt you can actually see yourself getting a little bit better. If you wade in to a fight madly swinging you’ll be killed! You have to defend, watch your opponent, adjust ya style of attack. It’s an incredible game. Just for note the people complaining that you have to start from the beginning when ya die, this isn’t true. If you’re good enough and get far enough in to a stage ya open short cuts in the world. You start at the beginning but a door is bow open or a wall demolished getting ya close to where you died.
Ya just have to get gud!!

This game is amazing. If you’ve played any of the other soulsborne games you’ll enjoy this. I’d personally say its the easiest of them though so if you’re looking to get into the series this is a great place to start. This is a very well done remaster.

Simply stunning game showcasing the PS5 in glorious graphical prowess and rich HDR colours. Absolutely loved every second of this game, and thrilled that I have ventured into to the harrowing world that is offered. Every step made is hard fought, every enemy ready to end you. There is no mistakes, and just one will cost you dearly. Patience, steady hand and strong nerves will allow you to triumph here, and take it from me this adventure is worth pursuing. Prepared to be dazzled, terrified and exhalirated as you venture onwards to you final goal…Good luck!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe First True Next Gen MASTERPIECE
This game, the game that’s only on PS5, is amazing. The visuals are amazing, the graphics are amazing, the character designs are amazing, everything is amazing. When I first started this game, I was blown straight away. Everytime I open this game, I would just wonder around the area, killing enemies for souls non stop just to get the best out of it. This game took me really long as I kept getting shot, stabbed, burned, and others. Enough talk, time to talk about the game itself.

The game is a remake to the original PS3 Demon Souls from From Software with upgraded realistic graphics and stuff. Now while From Software is doing Elden Ring with Game Of Thrones writer, Bluepoint Games, the guys who made the epic remake of Shadow of the Colossus, handles the development of the game and tbh, they did it right. They respected everything that made the game a masterpiece in the first piece.

Character customisation is back and it’s better than ever. Usually in a Souls game when it comes to customisation, I would just pick a character, a character who would prove useful in battle but this one, I couldn’t stop looking at it. I would just look at the different characters and even give that character a face. I once even thought of making a hulk.

Combat is similar to the original but it’s slower and more tense than ever. Nevertheless it’s still fun. I played the game as a knight which was an ok choice but he kept dying and losing souls. So I chose a wizard who is much fun and is the default ‘easy difficulty.’

When I said the default ‘easy difficulty’ it’s not. The game is still challenging as I kept dying and I sometimes became arrogant after defeating a boss. And the more times I died, I would use everything I learned from my death and come up with a plan and thus I succeeded. The challenge is what makes the game fun and for people who have never played a Souls game before, then good luck with that cause the first time I played a Souls game which is Dark Souls, I kept dying and gave up until I learned how to really play it.

This game is a complete masterpiece from Sony and Bluepoint Games (makes me wonder why Xbox didn’t make a game like this when their new console launched). The price is a bit unfair but I understand since the game is beautiful and huge to play with. Most importantly, this game is worth it and people who have a PS5 and is a hardcore player must play this.

Can’t fault this game! It’s great to get it on Amazon especially during lockdown when the stores are closed and their delivery service is out of stock/slow. The game itself, whoa!!!! Couldn’t be more pleased. Caution though: if you’re getting it for a younger kid as their first PS5 game, it is TOUGH! A good challenge but may be too difficult for new starters.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOutstanding remake. PS5 essential.
I first got this as a psplus free game on ps3 but didn’t play it until much later. Th first ‘souls’ game I really played was Bloodborne on PS4. My first thoughts were that it was too hard but the combat was incredible. After dying every few seconds I stuck with it, learned the combat and it was my first platinum trophy. Since then I have been a souls obsessive. I bought DS on ps3, DS2 SOTFS, ds remastered and ds3 on ps4 and platinumed them all. Revisited demons souls and then the ps5 was released. Held off completion until the new version was released. Wow. Absolutely love it. Graphics, sound, gameplay, haptic feedback all superb. Bluepoint have done a superb job here.

This is definitely the easiest souls game to complete. Bosses aren’t too hard in comparison to later games but is such a joy to play through. World tendency is strange to get used to but when you understand it, it adds something extra to the game. Excellent value for money as well considering I ploughed 717 hours into DS3 according to my ps5 and am currently 15 hours into this game. Replayability with different classes is enjoyable and rewarding. If you are struggling and don’t get it don’t give up – stay with it, learn the combat and you’ll realise how deep and accomplished the game is. Stunning.

Probably the best looking and sounding game I’ve ever played. IGNORE people commenting on the price – yes 70 is alot of money but compare this game to annual releases like Cod, Fifa and Assassins Creed, where you get ultimate / gold editions for up to 100 – it’s more than worth the money.

Great game so far, a really impressive showcase of the ps5’s graphical capability so early in its lifecycle.

Never played the original so this is all new to me, really addictive gameplay loop and feels like the right level of challenge.

Some usage of the dual senses haptic feedback capability which is useful to identify incoming enemies but I haven’t noticed any utilisation of the adaptive triggers.

Would recommend to new ps5 owners.

For players new to the souls genre. It will show you no mercy.
The checkpoints are only when you kill bosses.
If you die you lose all souls only get 1 chance to retrieve them die again there gone (from where you died)
There’s no hand holding have a guide to help where to go will be a huge help.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWarning - extremely hard - but graphically amazing
I’ve never played demons souls before on ps3 when it came out, so this was a huge shock to find how hard it is.

To summarise, this is not golden axe where you chop and kill relentlessly with little damage taken. There are no check points, wherever you die, you get sent right back to the beginning. I’ve been playing games since the Sega 90s days, and this is possibly the biggest challenge ever in a game. It would be great if when losing to a boss, you can just try again. But nope! Right back to the very start of that level you’re sent.

This will test your patience hugely, I’m very tempted to sell it on as its not enjoyable playing something so hard. But the challenge is what’s making me keeping it, for now.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersThe Most Visually Impressive/Sharpest Sounding Game I Have Ever Experienced. Near Flawless
Before From Software became a revered studio gifting gamers the Dark Souls Trilogy/Bloodborne and the exceptional Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice they released a title that Sony had such little faith in due to its unforgiving difficulty they chose to allow another publisher to release it to a western audience. Hidataka Miyazaki must of been dismayed at Sony’s refusal to acknowledge his vision and despite that setback did not introduce difficulty levels to ease the burden on gamers as this would have gone against his vision on what he thought Demons Souls was.

In the Call Of Duty Era of gaming with Activision releasing the same game every year, more seasoned gamers actually enjoyed the challenge of Demons Souls. The difficulty and the fairness of the combat. Its the gamers who recognised the greatness in the level-design that demanded respect. And only time, patience, intelligence and perseverance would allow you to progress. Even though From Software had no involvement in this “Reimagining” of their debut title, the biggest compliment developer Bluepoints (also remade Shadow Of The Colossus) Demons Souls iteration deserves is that no matter how familiar veterans of the series are, it feels you are venturing in to the unknown.

The design of the game remains faithful to the original. The core mechanics are unchanged and even enemy combatants spawn in the same areas and behave in the same way. As I retread through the kingdom of Boletaria I approach even the lowliest grunt with my shield held high. I stand silently at the edge of a narrow stone tunnel illuminated by the embers of a flickering torch, the silhouette of a heavily armoured aggressor doesn’t budge until I approach him. Not much room for evasive tactics here.

It took Naughty Dog 6 years to create the best visuals I have ever seen in a computer game (TLOU2) Every environment is rich in detail, what Bluepoint has been able to achieve in a launch title might be unsurpassed. The hub area of the Nexus is bathed in the warm glow of candles, the menacing aesthetic of imposing mysterious stone statues are shrouded in pure, hopeful white light. A dejected Stockpile Thomas cuts a forlorn figure and offers to look after your excess equipment. His expression portraying the pain and guilt he feels at being unable to protect his wife and child is evident.

The blacksmith scolds me for lacking sufficient funds to afford his wares. Some lines have been rerecorded with the same performers whilst others are entirely new. As brief as the input may be, all characters evoke the intended effect. Each of the five arch-stones transport you to locations that are visually distinct and steeped in a heavy atmosphere. Mindless dredging’s wander the grounds of Boletaria Palace, attacking you on sight with a flurry of exasperated sword swings. The tunnels in Stonefang as seen in trailers, feels claustrophobic and the deeper you venture the heat become more oppressive.

By respecting the source material and sticking closely to From Softwares framework and being able to utilise the power of the PS5, Demons Souls is truly a show piece for Sony’s next generation console. Bluepoint has taken From Softwares original and expressed it with next generation visuals and exceptional sound and even though I baulked at the criminal 70 price tag, everything is up there on the screen. Bluepoint deserves the plaudits and possibly will be seen as an established studio in their own right. I am just left to ponder if this is what can be achieved on day one, Horizon Forbidden West, unnamed Kojima Productions game, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studios, Sucker Punch Studios, Bend Studios, Rockstar, my head may literally explode at seeing what the PS5 has in store for us.

    However!
70 quid for a remake is out of order. If this was a new IP, a completely fresh idea then hell yeah I’d be happy paying 70, but for a remake, regardless of how good it is when the new call of duty, new spiderman (all be it short) valhalla and sackboy are all coming in cheaper

Golden Review Award: 73 From Our UsersA fantastic remake of a PlayStation 3 classic!
    The Good:
    * Stunning remake brings the fantastic gameplay of the PS3 game, while updating the visuals and performance with the PS5
    – Both old and new players can enjoy the experience as a fresh and new journey
    * Native 4K/2160p at 30 fps ‘Cinematic mode’ looks stunning
    * Reconstructed 4K at ~60 fps ‘Performance mode’ looks great, while offering a significant performance increase (my recommended mode)
    * Haptics and adaptive triggers let you FEEL every swing, fall, hit and incoming boulder..
    * 3D audio (headset only as of writing) brings Boletaria to life, as you hear every creak, groan and incoming arrow with full directionality
    * Entirely renewed score, which is utterly epic and fantastic, adding much ‘drama’ to the game (although, I adore the simplicity of the eerie and unsettling PS3 OST)
    * Tons of new, unique animations, such as individual weapon animations, parries and backstabs (not present in original)

    The Bad:
    * The price. An increase in price is understandable, however, $70/70 is not remotely equal or fair on UK players. Doesn’t look like Sony will budge on this though. (US$70 ~= 53)
    * No ray-tracing (this only impacts people who were hoping for some RT support)
    * Unless you’re a fan of the From Software’s (original developer) games, you might struggle to get into it (slow paced, vague narrative, no hand-holding – but all this also makes for excellent tension and escapism)
(* ‘Mind flayers’.. Good luck to new players 😉 )
